Le 12 mars 1942, les troupes américaines débarquent en Nouvelle-Calédonie, territoire de la France libre suite à l'appel du 18 juin du Général de Gaulle. La Nouvelle-Calédonie devient alors une importante base aérienne lors de la bataille de la mer de Corail et la base de lancement du Corps expéditionnaire américain pour la bataille de Guadalcanal. Nouméa devient le Quartier-Général du Pacifique.

Egyből a földgolyó másik felére utazunk, annak is egy aránylag kicsi és eldugott szegletébe, Új-Kaledóniába! Hát ha hallottunk is róla, esetleg be is tudjuk lőni kb. merre van, lássuk be többségünk nem tud túl sokat erről az országról/tengerentúli területről. Így pár sorban ezzel kezdjük, úgyis később is lesz még innen bélyeg, bizonyám!

Új-Kaledónia Franciaország egyik tengerentúli területe, egy nagy és több kisebb szigetből áll, a Csendes-óceán délnyugati részén, Ausztráliától jó 1500 km-re itt:

Nagyjából 280 ezren lakják, 90% Grande Terrén a nagy főszigeten él. Alapvetően három fő népcsoport él itt, az őshonos melanéz kanakok, idetelepült franciák, és egyéb óceániai bevándorlók. Történelmileg klasszikus gyarmati múlttal rendelkezik, nagyjából i.e. 1500 óta élnek itt a melanéz őslakosok. Mindenki békében elhegesztgetett magában a szigeten, némi egyéb polinéz keveredés mellett, egészen 1774-ig amikor ki más, mint a jó öreg James Cook ide is betette lábát (hajóját). Jelenlegi nevét is ő adta a szigetnek, Kaledónia egyébként Skócia latin neve. Eleinte nem volt rossz kapcsolat az érkezők és a bennszülöttek között, de aztán az európaiak által behurcolt betegségek elkezdték tizedelni a helyi népeket, és megromlott a viszony. Ez odaáig eszkalálódott, hogy 1849-ben az egyik törzs egy itt kikötő hajó legénységét megette! Ezután sajnos itt is beköszöntött a rabszolgakereskedelem időszaka, Fidzsire és Queenslandbe hurcolták az embereket az ültetvényekre. A XX. század elején szűnt csak meg a gyakorlat, a rabszolgakereskedők áldozatait nevezék kanakasnak, ez rövidült kanakká, mely aztán az őslakosok összefoglaló neve lett. A sziget egyébként 1853-ban került Franciaország birtokába, III. Napóleon azon törekvései okán, hogy ellensúlyt képezzen a britek ausztrál és új-zélandi gyarmataival szemben. A II. világháborúban aztán az Egyesült Államok épített ki itt erős támaszpontokat a szövetséges hatalmakkal karöltve, a japánokkal szemben, Nouméában - a jelenlegi fővárosban - volt a teljes csendes-óceáni haderő főparancsnoksága. A háború után lényegében továbbra is francia gyarmati sorban maradt a terület, a kanakok jogai és lehetőségei számtalan módon korlátozva voltak, ha nem is olyan kemény apartheid rendszer volt mint Dél-Afrikában, de annak egy enyhébb változata. Ez a '80-as évek közepére vezetett komolyabb forrongásokba, és a '80-as évek végén meg is kezdődik a függetlenedés folyamata, különböző egyezmények kimondják, hogy Új-Kaledónia fokozatosan elválik Franciaországtól, és ez elkerülhetetlen folyamat. Bevezették a külön új-kaledón állampolgárságot, csak ekkor lett az országnak külön zászlaja, címere, ami amúgy nagyon menő:

Ez a folyamat olyannyira szépen haladt, hogy 2018-ban népszavazást tartottak a teljes függetlenedésről, melyen 80%-os részvétel mellett, több mint 56%-al a maradáspártiak győztek. Mivel azonban az eredmény szoros volt, két év múlva megismételték a szavazást, 2020-ban már több mint 85%-os volt a részvétel, és még szorosabb eredmény született: a maradáspártiak győztek, de már csak 53%-al. Így történt tehát, hogy a sziget(ek) még mindig francia terület maradt, bár azokból talán a legfüggetlenebb, jog szerint az egyetlen autonóm francia terület, a gyakorlatban a külügyön, hadügyön, rendőri ügyeken, és valutaügyeken kívül minden más területen teljes a függetlenség a francia államtól. Valószínűsíthető, hogy 10-20 éven belül régi-új teljesen önálló ország születik itt.

A bélyeg a helyi Ifjúsági Kereskedelmi Kamara 10 éves évfordulójára készült 1972-ben. Ez még értelemszerűen teljes francia kontroll alatt alakult, a 'rendszerváltás' óta már nem létezik, rendes saját Kereskedelmi és Iparkamara lett azóta, gondolom Parragh László nélkül hálistennek. A bélyegen látható alak egy 'arany kanak', egy őslakos alakja, mely címeres pajzsot tart, amin a kamara jelképe látható, egy földtérkép - számunkra - sajátos nézetből. A háttér erre reflektál a szélességi körökkel, kék alapon. A bélyeg 12 frankos, és bizony, a mai napig Franciaország tengerentúli területein (kivéve a tengerentúli megyéket), nem történt meg az eurósítás és frankot használnak még most is. Innen Magyarországról könnyen gondolhatnánk, hogy ez biztos egy nagyon értékes bélyeg, de az a helyzet, hogy nem annyira, állapottól függően 0,50-2 euró közt be lehet szerezni. Mivel évfordulóra készült, magányos bélyeg, nem tagja sorozatnak.

A settler organized in a militia killed a Kanak protesting for liberation from French colonialism in Kanaky.

They are trying to minimize it by saying (without proper investigation) that the settler was defending himself and calling him a “civilian” as well as by calling the Kanak man a “rioter”. The high commissioner also announced that if “calm” doesn’t come back he will organize a military intervention to bring back “peace” and “calm”. For the record there’s already a lot of military checkpoints (edit: I used the expression military checkpoint but it’s not the right one I’m talking about the control by the gendarmerie who are like cops except they are in the military) that Kanak people have to go through daily in certain area and a heavy military presence so when he is talking about military intervention he is talking about killing people.

This is all happening because France wants to accelerate the colonization of Kanaky by allowing every single white French adult the right to vote locally. The Kanak resistance managed to negotiate so only settlers who had been in Kanaky for a decade or more in 1998 could vote locally. New settlers cannot do it. And France and its settlers want to go back on that accord saying that the 2021 referendum shows that people don’t want liberation so it’s racist (against settlers) to not let them vote (and take over Kanaky completely)

If any piece of shit brings up the 2021 referendum as a justification of French colonialism in Kanaky, know that it has zero value. The Kanak people and the resistance called for a report of the vote because of COVID. Mentioning that not only there was a health risk but that Kanak people have a long grieving period which meant that they wouldn’t be able to vote. That vote ended up being only a settler vote. If you compare it to the two previous votes with higher participation rate it’s almost certain that the Yes to independence would have won.

For those who don’t know it international law recognize Kanaky as a colony. The UN has Kanaky on the list of territories where indigenous people have no right to self determination and they recognize France as the occupying power (thanks to Palestine we’ve seen that international law doesn’t apply to Western backed colonialism but that’s an other topic)

Electoral reform in New Caledonia suspended, Macron says

France has suspended a planned electoral reform in its overseas territory of New Caledonia that sparked civil unrest in the Indo-Pacific archipelago last month, President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday.

Macron said a proposed constitutional amendment announced in May that would have given French citizens who have lived in New Caledonia for more than a decade the right to vote in local elections was being “suspended” to allow a “return to order”.

In reality, however, the dissolution of the French parliament after Macron called a snap election in response to his party’s disappointing result in last week’s EU elections means that reform cannot take place until a new legislature is elected.

Pro-independence movements had already seen the voting reform as dead and buried given Macron’s call for snap elections in the wake of his camp’s European Parliament poll drubbing on Sunday. The Kanak Liberation Party (Palika) said on Wednesday before Macron’s remarks:

We can all agree that the European elections saw off the constitutional bill.

The bill sparked weeks of civil unrest in the South Pacific archipelago, more than 15,000 kilometres from mainland France, which has left at least eight people dead and caused billions of euros in damage.

Many of New Caledonia’s indigenous Kanak people, who make up about 40 per cent of the territory’s population, have long been unhappy with Parisian rule and oppose granting voting rights to French settlers, believing the move would destroy their hopes for independence.

New Caledonia produces important minerals such as chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, copper, gold and nickel. The export of nickel ore has become one of the main sources of income for the islands. New Caledonia has approximately 10 per cent of the world’s reserves of this metal, the second largest on Earth.
