I'm working on my second round of revisions for Saints of Storm and Sorrow, and running into reader confusion, and I'm unsure if a term switch is going to make things better or worse.

They’re both made almost entirely of calcium carbonate, plus stabilizing organic proteins

Mother-of-pearl gets its iridescence from the specific structure, helped in part by the scaffolding of the specific proteins
