A tanuki in front of the Keimei Waterfall in Kōka, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Courtesy of Wikipedia: The tanuki has a long history in Japanese legend and folklore. Bake-danuki (化け狸) are a kind of tanuki yōkai (supernatural beings) found in the classics and in the mythology and legends of various places in Japan. Although the tanuki is a natural, extant animal, the bake-danuki in literature has always been depicted as a strange, even supernatural animal. The earliest appearance of the bake-danuki in literature is in the chapter about Empress Suiko in the Nihon Shoki written during the Nara period. There are such passages as "in two months of spring, there is tanuki in the country of Mutsu (春二月陸奥有狢), they turn into humans and sing songs (化人以歌)". Bake-danuki subsequently appears in such classics as the Nihon Ryōiki and the Uji Shūi Monogatari. In some regions of Japan, bake-danuki is reputed to have abilities similar to those attributed to kitsune (foxes): they can shapeshift into other things or people and possess human beings.

Note
"The common raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), also called the Chinese or Asian raccoon dog to distinguish it from the Japanese raccoon dog, is a small, heavy-set, fox-like canid native to East Asia. Named for its raccoon-like face markings, it is most closely related to foxes. Common raccoon dogs feed on many animals and plant matter, and are unusual among canids (dogs, foxes, and other members of the family Canidae) in that they hibernate during cold winters and can climb trees. They are widespread in their native range, and are invasive in Europe where they were introduced for the fur trade. The similar Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes viverrinus, the tanuki), native to Japan, is the only other living member of the genus Nyctereutes.[2] Other names for the common raccoon dog include mangut (its Evenki name),[3] and neoguri (its Korean name)." - Wikipedia

Okay so these are raccoon dogs.
Apparently Stelle exists in the real world and her soul is stuck in the body of a raccoon dog :0
She looks very majestic and I wanna bite her face (affectionately) so thank you for showing me this wonderful creature. I will store it in my brain archives until the day I inevitably perish to the sun 💖💖

DAY 7: TANUKI
also known as Japanese Racoon Dog, or Nyctereutes viverrinus
Fun Fact: the words Tanuki and Mujina can both be used to refer to either tanukis or japanese badgers. like one region might call the japanese raccoon dog Tanuki whereas another region might call it Mujina, and vice versa for japanese badges

skraelroc werewolf au
(give me an au and i'll give you five headcanons; thank you for the ask!)
we're going with "general canids" here because
bellroc is obviously a maned wolf (chrysocuon brachyurus) bc they likewise are 90% leg, have a magnificent ruff, and just generally give off an air of "you expect them to be giving off shoujo manga sparkles."
skrael is an arctic fox (vulpes lagopus) because literal years ago i sent a rp partner a picture of an arctic fox stealing an egg like "that's your boy!" and now. that boy is now my boy. egg-stealing trickster bastard but so cozy comfy in the cold (plus summertime gothmode) and soooo cute.
nari, of course, is a tanuki (nyctereutes viverrinus) because nobody remembers tanuki are technically canids AND ALSO while that's true of all three of these species, racoon dogs are more closely related to foxes than maned woofs. also also, per wikipedia: "they are reputed to be mischievous and jolly, masters of disguise and shapeshifting but somewhat gullible and absent-minded." hello.
fox!skrael showing up on the lake family doorstep because he loves causing problems. barbara coos! picks him up! jim come here look at this little man. i'm gonna have to start getting him the good food. do you think people would like him on instagram? jim, meanwhile—merlin's champion woofhunter…?—immediately calling arcadia animal control,
bellroc. gets. a king arthur squeaky toy. they deserve it.
…perhaps not the truest to the spirit of the prompt (wee crow was a vampire lad), but. bork bork. grrr. awoo!!

Fur advocates and Animal Rights Advocates alike have a propensity for mislabeling long, white furs. The three most common species for long, white-colored furbearers are finnraccoon, red fox, and arctic fox. Despite their similarities it’s still possible to distinguish between the three.
White Tanuki (Nyctereutes viverrinus) - both the albino and leucistic morphs are used in the fur industry for white finnracoon. Finnraccoons posses the longest guard hairs in the industry, as well as having thick, sturdy guard hairs. These guard hairs will catch the light in photographs and make it recognizable in comparison to fox.
White Morph Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes fulvus) - Red foxes come in a variety of white colorations such as Georgian (almost completely white), light silver marble (light grey dorsal stripe), as well as pure white and albino. They have a long pile fur but the guard hairs are not as pronounced as the finnracoon, and the fur on the neck will be distinctly longer than the fur on the shoulders.
Tumblr media
Polar Artic Fox (Vulpes lagopus) - Polar artic fox (used interchangeably with ‘shadow fox’ in the industry although there are differences) have been selectively bred to have an equal pile fur that is thick and short. The coloring is typically pure white although there are occasionally slightly darker dorsal stripes. Polar arctic foxes are the most common in the fur trade and the most common for dyed furs. These are the most common white furs in the fur trade.
Blue Fox (Vulpes lagopus) - Similar to polar arctic, the blue fox has been bred for even, shorter hairs that will appear even throughout the coat. Typically no distinct neck ruff will be present aside from darker hairs along the shoulders and back. Currently light blue foxes are favored as they’re easy to dye. These are the second most common for white fur.

Declaring today #TanukiTuesday just so I can share these two well-dressed glazed stoneware figures by Nin'ami Dōhachi (Japanese, 1783-1855). Photographed at The Life of Animals in Japanese Art exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. in 2019, on loan from Tokyo National Museum.

Kaiyodo Japanese raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes viverrinus) + Play Visions Siberian raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides)
Tumblr media
There are other raccoon dog figurines from Kaiyodo that I'll grab in the future, they're common to find. The Play Visions raccoon dog is an extremely elusive figure that I was lucky to find, and if I remember correctly it's the only raccoon dog figurine from a non-Japanese company.

You may not expect it, but I do a ton of preliminary sketches for my designs. These were originally sketches for the raccoon sticker that was the predecessor to my pin designs!
The Kickstarter is currently at $990! Who wants to breach $1000? We need to hit $1300 to unlock the Tanuki. Check it out here!

Animal of the Day!
Tanuki (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Asia; Europe
Size (Weight/Length)- 5.8 kg; 45.7 cm
Diet- Birds; Fish; Amphibians; Carrion; Insects; Rodents
Cool Facts- Being a famous trickster animal of Japanese myth, the tanuki, or Japanese raccoon dog, are starting to gain more popularity in today’s society across the world due to Tom Nook. And yes, Tom Nook is a tanuki, not a raccoon. Tanuki are mainly nocturnal where they live in small groups or are in breeding pairs. Despite preferring to have all paws on the ground, they are able to climb trees in search of food or to escape predators. Tanuki were recently introduced to Europe where they are considered invasive due to eating native wildlife.
Rating- 12/10 (Animal Crossing anyone?)
