what i love about laios is that he's actually very good at putting puzzle pieces together BUT HERE'S THE THING 1) he needs to HAVE the information, and 2) (this is important) he needs to KNOW it is information he should care about

and i think this could be said of anyone but the thing with laios is that people tend to view his lack of awareness wrt social etiquette and memory problems as pure indifference and/or obliviousness; sometimes they misinterpret his motives based on their inaccurate expectations of him and therefore don't give his thoughts on a subject the credit he deserves

one of the most obvious examples of this happens at least twice in the manga as i remember it, but the most recent incident was when they were trying to resurrect falin. there's a moment where laios mentions reconstructing both of the warg skeletons, as their bones are mixed in with hers. both chilchuck and senshi balk at this, with chilchuck complaining aloud, questioning laios' priorities,

and laios quickly, angrily retorts. his reason for making the suggestion is perfectly logical and practical, but because his friends are used to his interest in monsters influencing his judgement, often in ways they see as frivolous or dangerous, they don't come to the same conclusion. one which i'd argue is kind of obvious considering the situation

we see it again during his fight with toshiro, where toshiro demands to know what laios plans to do to save falin. laios takes a minute to answer, but he DOES answer, following the logic that if falin is a chimera because of (and controlled by) the mad mage, then the logical next step is to confront/defeat/usurp them

then in the following episode, when chilchuck brings it up again, laios explains what he (now) knows about thistle, mentioning that he's the same elf that laios saw in the living paintings, which is why he knows thistle's connection to delgal. the party reacts like this:

i'd say this is an example of them feeling frustration over laios' habit of having 'bad timing', not knowing when or how to speak at appropriate moments. theyre judging him for not saying something earlier, as if he already knew all this but didn't think to mention it when it was relevant, when the reality is that laios only just now had all the pieces he needed to understand the full picture

and i mention this bit specifically because i think it's a great way to explain what i mean by point 2: laios needs to know when information is important and worth considering

which, again, feels fucking obvious. but as someone who ALSO has debilitating issues with remembering important shit, i find this particular element of it pretty relatable and critical to my overall point. it's not laios' fault that he didn't know who thistle was or his significance - why the hell would he assume that a person he met in a living painting, presumably long since dead in reality, should be someone who's face, name, or motives he keeps in mind?

ultimately, i guess what i'm trying to say with all this is that the way others treat laios' intelligence is not congruent to how actually smart he is. one of the things i love most about laios, what is possibly his biggest strength and the reason he is such a great protagonist, is that laios is willing to think things through and find the most logical conclusion to a problem, no matter how outlandish or dangerous or seemingly impossible that conclusion may be. sister got eaten? race back down to go get her. can't afford food? fight, defeat, and eat dangerous monsters. sister's fully digested? use black magic to bring her back. now she's a chimera? defeat the mage controlling her and use that power to fix it.

anyways. what was even my point with this post? i guess it is that laios is smart, at least as smart as anyone else in the cast, arguably smarter than some. he is intelligent and utilizes that intelligence in many ways, not JUST when it comes to monster info (though that is his best and sexiest brand of knowledge)

and also please be nice to your friends with memory problems. it's rough out here for forgetful bitches

This AU was meant to be posted on halloween but eh.... Happy Thanksgiving? HAHAHHA

still dont have a name for it, but basically, back in october i was suddenly hit with the need to have a halloween au, so now we have ghost-ified prismo and vampire/witch-ified scarab :D ( although didnt finish the scarab reference spread in time because uh, school and i lost motivation unfortunately )

au synopsis and rambling below the cut!!

the premise of this au is simple : scarab is a real estate agent whos known for his manners ( never barges in, always waits to be invited! though it is a little weird how he keeps asking to be let inside even if they already agreed that he was going to come over... ) and efficiency at his job - that is, convincing people to buy high-end housing for a good price. although his social skills need some... work, his ability to persuade people isnt something to be laughed at.

unfortunately for him, persuading the higher-ups is a completely different story - which he learned the hard way after flunking something big for the company. they dont choose to fire him, no. instead, they put him through a trial, assigning him to sell their most unprofitable property : the mansion in a small town locally known for being haunted by an "evil spirit". if scarab manages to sell it (for good profit) within six months, he is excused and is able to go on with his job. if not... well, best not to think about it, yes? after all, he'll succeed with ease - all he has to do is dispel any worries about some fake "ghost" that only exists as a result of filthy rumors. maybe clean up the place. not too hard, right?

meanwhile, stuck inside said mansion is an extremely bored prismo. hes been hangin around this place for like... how many years now? forty? a hundred? meh, all the same, lately the place has been quieter than usual. i mean- of course people dont just walk into a creepy mansion every day, but there would usually be at least a few bold kids or vloggers coming in now and then for him to entertain but even then they wouldn't stay long ( for obvious reasons ). and now, just some unbound spirits or dumb animals would pass by and thats about it. a guy can only entertain himself for so long, yknow?

that is, until today. when some posh-looking business man entered the premises and started snooping around ( whats the deal with that, by the way?? ). must be prismo's lucky day!! this is the perfect chance to pull out all the stops and play the FUNNIEST prank ever! hah!

... oh. looks like things've gotten a little out of hand.

ive talked in the past about keroro's desire to keep things as they are, static, because it's the only way he can have both keron and earth, but while rewatching ep140b I realized it shows the opposite side of this struggle

that no matter his efforts, it's a futile attempt and nothing is improving because everything is staying exactly the same. he spent a week racking his brain for a solution but the episode ends by showing us that he doesn't find one. could it be because the whole time he was fighting alone?

(his voice breaks in the first screenshot...) this to me feels like the same motivation he would have for invading. wanting to leave a mark, making something of yourself, mattering.

chibikero is in shadow, like the gunpla's shadow. he's not real anymore but he represents all the expectations and lost potential on his shoulders. while the small gunpla is in light like keroro. that's the reality of it. but that's also how he feels. small. he hasn't achieved any of his goals. he hasn't lived up to anything he said he would, everything he based his identity on. he's a "pitiful invader". his desire to matter perfectly encapsulates his abandonment issues too.

this collection will outlive him. it will speak of his greatness when he's gone. it's as much his identity as the invasion. it's also his tomb in the exact same way.

he's so happy for a moment organizing his whole collection on the shelves that he thought were gonna solve everything, enjoying the moment as it was, but in the end nothing changed.

is it because he's expendable? easily replaceable, like by a clone? is it because he doesn't see his own worth, so he has to get some (the keron star, his collection, the invasion)? because if he's not useful, he'll be thrown out? or because he doesn't want to be forgotten and left behind?

and yet

he remains insignificant and his fight is fruitless.

From Ghostbusters! A Yugioh AU

(From the unfortunately delayed final chapter (im so sorry its gonna come i swear) where Ryou and Yugi are desperately trying to figure out how to solve the current Ghost Dilemma that is rapidly consuming Domino)

Ryou held the phone out between himself and Yugi. They waited, holding their breath in hopes they might actually get someone to answer the phone.

“Kaiba Corp, how can I assist you?”

Ryou and Yugi stared at each other. They weren’t really expecting an answer.

“Um,” Yugi quickly spoke up, “Yes, um, is Seto Kaiba available?”

“I’m sorry sir. Mister Kaiba is very busy. I can take a—”

“Busy with what?” Ryou challenged. “Listen lady, I don’t know if you’ve been outside, but it’s like night of the living dead out there. Get Kaiba on the phone and tell him it’s the Ghostbusters.”

“The Ghostbusters? I… I’m not sure if he—”

Yugi groaned. “Please just get him on the phone. He needs our help and we need his. It’s an emergency!”

The woman on the other line made a distressed hum. She seemed nervous, but Ryou and Yugi knew there was no time to lose.

Eventually, the woman sighed. “Please hold.”

When the line went quiet, Ryou grinned at Yugi.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe that actually worked.”

Yugi nodded, but his excitement quickly faded. “That was the easy part, though.”

From The Clean Sneak

(Continuing from the train capture gone awry, Yugi, Atem, Mai, and Isis must come up with a plan to get Amir away from Ryou)

“I promised to look out for my brothers, Mai.”

“Isis…” Mai hummed with uncertainty, for she recognized that determined look in Isis’ eyes. “What are you doing?”

“I’m saving Amir from himself.” Isis pushed her rifle into Mai’s hands before reaching behind herself to pull out a revolver. The handle was wooden with beautiful, delicate pearl designs embedded into it. She opened up the cylinder, counting the bullets inside.

“Three shots Mai,” She continued, but Mai wasn’t convinced.

“Three shots and what? You’ll shoot him and drag him off the train?! Isis, you’re not thinking straight. We have to—”

“We have to save Ryou. I’m saving my brother. My family.” Isis opened up the sleeper car door, her revolver in hand. “I’m just going to talk to him.”

“Talk to him?!” All three of the others in the train car exclaimed, looking at Isis in shock.

“Sweetie, I don’t think he wants to talk anymore. I think you need to think this over a little more—”

(I'm currently working on something for @ninjam117 's birthday... so here's a snippet of that >:) )

Thinking about it made Yugi blush. He put his head in his hands, angry at himself for having such… tainted thoughts about a stranger. About an alluring young man. A pale, green-eyed, white-haired angel. 

Yugi groaned to himself. He was hopeless. The man wasn’t coming. It was well past midnight. Probably 2am. He should get some rest already. He was sure the young man had better places to be anyway. 

With a heavy sigh, Yugi straightened up. He tilted his head toward the moon in the distance, gazing at it and the stars momentarily before forcing himself to turn away. 

With his head low, Yugi quietly shut the balcony French doors. He shut all the curtains, then crawled into bed, not even bothering to take his party garments off. 

The sheer curtains over the French doors did little to hide the moonlight. It bothered Yugi, for the light was so pale and magical. A perfect night to experience something… new. Something fantastic.

Yugi’s eyelids grew heavy. His blinking slowed as he stared at the edge of his bed, at the elegant night sky. 

It was quiet. Peaceful. 

Eventually, Yugi shut his eyes, sleep having taken him over.

(Yes I'm making a sequel, yes I'm insane. First snippet is from chapter 1)

It didn’t take long at all for the two to peel their clothes off. They’d done it countless times before. It was almost as routine to shower together as it was to work out together.

The water was running. Malik and Ryou were kissing, holding each other almost unbearably close.

“We’re going to be late,” Malik murmured between kisses, but Ryou was relentless. He held onto Malik’s head and kissed him over and over again. Eventually, Malik had to pull himself free to laugh.

Ryou groaned. He leaned his head into the crook of Malik’s neck, his arms wrapped around his lover’s body.

“Fine.” But Ryou didn’t move. He closed his eyes, reveling in the peace that came with being close to Malik.

Malik hugged Ryou back. They stood under the running water for a while, content to remain in the embrace for as long as possible.

“I love you,” Ryou whispered, not wanting to ruin the peace by speaking too loud.

Malik smiled. He held Ryou tighter and kissed Ryou’s head.

“I love you, too.”

Ryou pulled away. He looked at Malik, thankful his face was already red from the run so Malik couldn’t see how much he was blushing. He felt over Malik’s shoulders, trailing his hands down along his chest and to his sides.

“Do you want me to wash your hair?” Malik asked. Ryou closed his eyes, took in a deep breath and nodded.

Ryou turned around and let Malik do his wonders. His hands were so gentle. So warm and kind and never malicious.

“Is this okay?” He would ask frequently and Ryou would reply, “Yes. Perfect.”

“I think you might be due for a trim soon,” Malik commented. “Your hair is getting longer.”

Ryou hummed. “Yeah. Probably.”

Malik gently tilted Ryou’s head back to rinse the soap out. Then, of course, as always, Ryou did the same for Malik. 

“Do you remember when we first did this?” Ryou asked, keeping his eyes fixated on the lathering task. “And we cried.”

Malik let out a thoughtful hum. “Of course I do.”

Ryou smiled a little. The memory was bittersweet, but felt more sweet as time went on.

“...Is everything okay?” Malik asked, hesitance in his tone.

“Everything is just fine,” Ryou replied, tilting Malik’s head back to rinse the soap. He hummed happily.

From Cornered 2... But some time later in the fic

(Another taste of what's inevitably to come in Cornered 2 but THATS IT no more sippies ... maybe)

Ryou forced his legs to back away. He forced his eyes to tear away, but nothing seemed to help. The gym spun around him. Voices that weren’t there were on a loop, getting louder and louder. 

He hurried to the locker room, bumping into one or two people along the way. His shoulders were tense, his hands balled up tight.

Unfortunately, the locker room did not provide the solace Ryou, for some reason, thought it would. 

Stiffly, Ryou sat down on the bench, holding his head in his hands. 

He wanted this to stop. He wanted the voices to stop. He wanted the panic to stop. 

But thinking such things only made it worse. It wasn’t going to stop. It was never going to stop. These things already happened to him. Ryou couldn’t go back in time and fix it. He couldn’t go back and… and…

You’re never going to forget me, you know.

“I know,” Ryou said aloud, answering the voice in his head. 

Every time you sleep, you’ll dream of me.

“I know,” Ryou said louder. 

Every time you close your eyes—

“I SEE YOU!” Ryou shouted abruptly, rising to his feet. 

“I see you every day! I hear you every day! Shut up! Be quiet! Just be fucking quiet!”

Ryou wanted to punch the lockers. He wanted to throw all of his things and roll on the floor and sob, but the only thing he could bring himself to do was stand in the middle of the locker room and yell.

No…

No. 

“Fuck you,” Ryou said aloud again, smashing his hand into his locker before pulling it open aggressively. “I’m in control. I’m in control. I AM IN CONTROL!”

“Are you..?”

Ryou nearly screamed. He jumped, not expecting Jounouchi’s voice to be so close. 

Oh god. Ryou had forgotten he was in public. The locker room wasn’t empty. Dozens of eyes were staring at him. 

Ryou thought he might throw up.

“Hey, Touzoku, it’s okay—”

Ryou shoved Jounouchi’s hands away. He didn’t know why, though. He could really use the comfort. 

…The only comfort he wanted, though, was the only comfort he couldn’t have.

“I-I…” Ryou swallowed. He searched for words that weren’t angry or rude or frantic, but it was hard. ��I’m leaving. I need to go.”

Jounouchi frowned. He stepped away as Ryou chaotically shoved things in his gym bag and walked out of the locker room.

“Where are you going? Let me drive you.”

“I can drive myself,” Ryou said through gritted teeth, though he didn’t want to. He didn’t want to be mean to Jounouchi at all, but right now that was all he could give him.

“Please, Touzoku,” Jounouchi urged, following Ryou outside. “Something is wrong. You’re not—”

“Of course something is wrong!” Ryou practically screeched, whirling around to glare at Jounouchi. “Something has been wrong with me for four fucking years, Katsuya! I can’t get away from a man in prison and my fucking fiancee is in a fucking coma!”

Ryou was out of breath. People in the gym were gathered by the front door, watching the commotion. 

“Touzoku…”

“Jounouchi,” Ryou breathed. “I..” He put a hand up in the air, shaking his head. “I can’t. I need to see Malik. That’s all I want to do right now.”
