Ontario's animal welfare agency, the OSPCA, has informed provincial government officials it will stop investigating and enforcing animal cruelty laws once its current contract expires at the end of March.
The OSPCA has enforced animal cruelty laws in Ontario for 100 years.
CEO Kate MacDonald told The Canadian Press (CP) the current model "is no longer working".
MacDonald says the group will transition into a support role in animal cruelty cases while providing shelter, forensic evidence and vetrinary services.
Current enforcement officers will be moved into support roles.

Hey guys... I don't normally post this kind of stuff, but as a rabbit owner and lover of the loafs, I feel I need to. A rabbit rescue I follow from Ontario, Canada posted a set of pictures from a backyard they stumbled across when they heard rabbits in distress. 5 rabbits with no food or water, some in cages so small they can't even stand, and poop EVERYWHERE! These conditions are hideous and cruel. The owner claimed they were "just rabbits" so who cares. The OSPCA of Ontario was called (tho it took forever to get a hold of anyone) and this was their answer

This isn't the first time they have seen conditions like these with photographic/video proof of cruelty to rabbits but yet, they do nothing! Last year the was an inspection done of a rabbit meat farm (excuse me while I barf) and they deemed conditions where dead rabbits lay among live ones in mountains of feces, little starving babies clinging to dead mothers for milk, multiple broken freezers of dead rabbits, and multiple mutilated and injured rabbits as ok. WARNING! THE FOLLOWING LINK SHOWS WHAT WAS JUST DISCRIBED! https://youtu.be/wlq_Zb95e6U
I beg any of my followers in Canada, and especially Ontario... please let this organization know that none of this is right! Let them know that the above picture is just a cruel as the below picture!

Please consider donating toward private groups like, Rabbit Rescue in Ontario and other places that are picking up the slack left behind by the OSPCA

Start-up Progress Update
After having my meeting a few weeks ago, there were somethings brought in that I should reconsider when it comes to my business. I am planning on launching a dog walking business, now, this would not be my full-time job, this would be a side job for me. But, there were a few things suggested that I will incorporate into my business when walking someone’s dog. The first thing is a waiver. This will help protect me and the person whose dog I am walking. Having the owner sign-off, it would essentially be a safety precaution more than anything. Another thing I will consider doing is when I become a little more well-known, or right from the beginning, I will donate some of the proceeds to the local OSPCA in my area and support them financially.
Thus far, I feel as though the hardest part of launching this business would be finding clients who would trust me with their animals. I think the best way for me to start this business would be with people that I know, and them passing my name and information along. Another thing I can consider doing is creating posters and reaching out to local grocery stores and other company’s about posting these. I live in an area that has a lot of seniors, therefore, social media may not be my best course of action. The other struggle with social media is becoming known and people knowing about me in the right area. There clearly is still a lot to consider when it comes to my business, but I have been kept on my toes during this process.

Musing on the relationship I have with my mother’s chihuahua, Lettie, and how it’s a very unique relationship and likely one not many people will experience.
TW animal death.
In 2013, my mom had a puggle named Ellanor who died suddenly and tragically. Within 5 days, my eldest sister found a sweet little chihuahua on the OSPCA website and pressured my mom into looking at her without really giving room to debate. I was off work that day so I went with them.
My mom was really not wanting another dog, especially so soon. But my eldest sister is the sort where it’s best to just go along with her to make her stop. So we drive 45 minutes to meet this chihuahua mix, Harriette. She was 6 years old and toothless, a rescue from a hoarders situation. Super quiet and chill, all she wanted to do was sit on our laps.
Tumblr media
My mom wasn’t sold, but the second they moved her to my lap, I was in love. We brought home Harriette that day, and she was my first dog I ever had. Before, I only ever had cats.
Harriette was the most laid back dog ever. She ate, slept and... sun bathed outside. She didn’t like walks much. She just wanted to sit with you and chill. I was and still am living at home with my parents, and my mom thought it would be nice to get another small dog for Harriette to bond with. She was the smallest dog we ever had. My parents had two other dogs, Toby (a beagle) and Louis (a puggle), and the thinking was they are way too big to really be a good friend for Harriette.
After having Harriette for over a year, a chihuahua-rat terrier mix popped up on the OSPCA website. We got Harriette in the car and took her for a meet and greet. She was her usual chill self and didn’t care much, but this little lady, at the time named Letsie, seemed to lovvvve Harriette. Letsie was 2 and full of spunk and love for my girl. We took her home and renamed her Lettie so as to not confuse her name with our cat, Lexi.
Tumblr media
Lettie was my mother’s dog as she gravitated towards her more than anyone, but Harriette was her true love.
Harriette and Lettie were instant bonded mates. I always said that Harriette more or less tolerated Lettie, where Lettie would follow Harriette everywhere, cuddle with her, clean her, try to get her to play (to varying degrees of success). Lettie was absolutely in love, and Harriette more or less just kind of let it happen and probably enjoyed the extra warmth.
Tumblr media
Come 2017, Harriette stops eating. Through a lot of expensive tests, we discover she has multiple tumors in her body. Also, she was probably 10 when we got her, making her 14. It was one of the hardest decisions of my life to let Harriette go. I wanted to do everything I could to save her, but the risks were just too high. She had glaucoma, she was old and weak, she had a previous hernia surgery. It was too high risk and I just couldn’t put her through it. So she had to be put down.
Tumblr media
Lettie mourned. She mourned as hard as I did. And I found quickly with Harriette’s passing that Lettie started to gravitate towards me. Not in the way she would my mom, begging for cuddles and attention. She just.. wanted to be near me. To sit with me.
I cried while holding Lettie many, many times in those first few months. I think Lettie knew that the only one who fully understood her pain was me, and vice versa. I loved Harriette so much, and Lettie did too. We understood that. Within a week, my sister (who also lived at home) adopted another chihuahua named Dougie, but Lettie just wasn’t in to him. Lettie and I just wanted to be left alone. I was mad at my sister for getting another dog so quickly into the house. I knew how mom had felt when Ellanor passed.
Maybe a month after Harriette passed, I looked online for other companions. I knew I wanted another dog, but my biggest priority is I wanted something small, something chill. Someone for Lettie and I to love together.
Tumblr media
It took about 4 months before I found Abby, my white snaggled toothed german spitz mix. I fell hard for her, and I brought Lettie with us on the hour long drive to meet her. Lettie was very much “meh” but I couldn’t leave Abby behind. Abby came home with us.
Lettie hasn’t bonded with the other dogs the same way she did with Harriette. Her and Dougie run the fence together sometimes, Louis is still around and joins them. Her and Abby, at most, will share my lap on car rides, but that’s the extent of their interactions. But every night I spend a few minutes with Lettie, rubbing her belly and kissing her head, and then tuck her into bed. I did that when we got Harriette, and I’ve done it with Lettie every day since we got her too.
And I was just... looking into Lettie’s big bug eyes tonight as I rubbed her belly, and she gently licked my hand. I still want to find her someone, and I think she knows that. At the same time, I think we’ve both been through such a hard loss that we bonded in our pain. I liked Lettie and got along with her just fine before Harriette passed away, but the dynamic between us changed. We’re closer now. I’m definitely her second place after mom. And in a way, I think of her as my dog too. Just because we both loved and lost and grieved together.

Rescue dog makes history as first ever pit bull to graduate as an arson detection K9 officer
Hansel the pit bull just made history as the first of its breed to graduate as an arson detection K9 officer, officially becoming a member of the Millville Fire Department in New Jersey after successfully finishing his training.
The four-year-old pup was rescued by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) in 2015 when he was just 7 weeks old.

Bill S-203 brings an end to keeping whales and dolphins in captivity
Christina Manocchio - January 11, 2019
The captivity of dolphins and whales is coming to an end in Canada, with the passing of Bill S-203 in the House of Commons. The bill started in 2015 with Senator Wilfred Moore, and was taken over by Senator Elizabeth May after his retirement in 2017. The bill's second reading in the House of Commons occured on Nov. 29, 2018, and is currently going into the third reading. The bill will prevent tourist attractions, like Marineland and Vancouver Aquarium, from breeding and acquiring new whales and dolphins. Parks that go against the bill can face a fine up to $200,000. Marineland has more than 4,000 animals, including one orca whale, 58 beluga whales, sea lions and other marine animals.
With this bill, Marineland and Vancouver Aquarium would be able to keep their existing cetaceans, but would not be able to breed or acquire new ones. “It will position Canada as one of the leaders in animal protection,” said Lori Marino, president of Whale Sanctuary Project and expert on marine mammals in captivity. “There’s no scientific research really being done at Marineland,” said Marino. “There’s been a few little studies, but they have no impact on anything.” She explained that most of Vancouver Aquariums research has been conducted in the field with wild belugas and orcas.
She studied the impact of conducting research on animals in captivity, but found there was little claim to conducting research in captivity. “There is negligible impact upon research. Vancouver Aquarium can still do the great research they do in the field.” John Holer, CEO and owner of Marineland, advocated against the bill in Senate before his death. Both Marineland and Vancouver Aquarium have argued that the bill prevents furthering scientific research on marine animals. Holer received support from Senator Donald Neil Plett throughout its time in Senate. “This bill denies us the opportunity to study and learn from a very small number of captive animals in a way that will permit us to understand and address those animals' unique and special needs in much larger populations in the wild,” Senator Plett stated during Bill S-203’s second reading in May of 2017.
Marineland has also argued the bill will negatively affect tourism in the Niagara Region. During the Proceedings of the Standing Senate Committee in May 2017, Chairman of Niagara Falls Tourism, Wayne Thomson, said that “54 per cent of the rooms that were rented in this area were because of the visits to Marineland.” Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) is an organization that ensures the accredited “zoos and aquariums are recognized for their high standards of animal care.” Vancouver Aquarium is a part of the organizations accredited list but Marineland is not.
“Working at Marineland, you were always walking on your toes,” said Phil Demers, who was an animal trainer at Marineland until 2012 and now advocates for animal rights at the park. “In many ways people suffered from Stockholm syndrome. People who work at Marineland for a really long time start to defend it.” In 2016, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) charged Marineland with 11 counts of animal curtly, which was dropped by the Crown in 2017. Marineland later sued the OSPCA for $21 million. Demers is one of nine people sued by Marineland in 2012, the others being activists, former employees, and media reporting on the issue. Every suit was settled except for Demers, which is still ongoing.
