Off-label Applications of TMS | Relief Mental Health
Deep TMS has also received the European CE certification mark for Alzheimerâs Disease (AD), autism, bipolar disorder, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinsonâs Disease, post-stroke rehabilitation, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and negative symptoms of Schizophrenia.
Here are some off-label applications of TMS:
Eating Disorders
TMS is emerging as a promising treatment for individuals with eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Although itâs not yet FDA-approved for this specific use, TMS has shown encouraging results in reducing symptoms by targeting brain areas involved in mood regulation and impulse control. This non-invasive therapy can help alleviate anxiety and depressive symptoms often associated with eating disorders, potentially providing a new avenue for those who have not found success with traditional treatments.
Alzheimerâs Disease and Dementia
Alzheimerâs disease leads to progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. Scientists are still trying to figure out how the disease affects the brain. However, one study found that TMS could help. The study also noted that TMS could help improve cognitive function in those with Alzheimerâs. While thereâs a need for more TMS research, the early findings are promising.
Migraines and Chronic Pain
Numerous studies show good evidence that TMS helps with migraines and chronic pain. In one study, people had about nine headache days in a month. After TMS therapy, they reported having fewer headaches often. The number of days they had headaches was reduced by about three days on average.
A NIH study backs this up, with findings showing that TMS reduces the frequency and severity of migraines. The evidence is somewhat limited, but whatâs available shows TMS may be a safe and effective way to prevent or treat chronic migraines.
Post Stroke Rehabilitation
TMS has helped researchers improve their understanding of the mechanisms underlying the recovery of motor function after stroke. As a result, this has allowed them to test TMS and other interventions to affect motor behavior. Itâs clear that itâs possible to modulate motor functions in stroke patients. However, more studies are still needed to understand the recovery process and underlying factors like patient characteristics and optimal stimulation parameters.
One notable case study involved a stroke patient who underwent TMS therapy targeting the motor cortex, the area of the brain responsible for movement. Through regular sessions of TMS, this patient experienced significant improvements in motor function. They reported better movement control, increased strength, and enhanced coordination throughout treatment.
ADHD
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects focus, self-control, and other vital skills. TMS can improve these symptoms by stimulating brain regions involved in attention and impulse control. Patients with ADHD who receive TMS often experience better concentration, longer attention spans, and improved social skills, making daily tasks easier to manage.
TMS is showing promise as a safe and effective treatment option for ADHD with encouraging results in studies. In one of these studies, researchers analyzed how Deep TMS could help with ADHD symptoms. They studied 53 participants who were split into three groups:
Deep TMS
Repetitive TMS (rTMS)
Placebo TMS
Using the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS), they found that 33% of those who received Deep TMS saw a significant reduction of 30% or more in their CAARS scores. Whatâs promising about TMS is that itâs noninvasive. This means no surgery or implants are involved, which lowers the risk of complications.
Unlike some other treatments like electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), TMS doesnât come with a high risk of seizure or memory loss. And it doesnât require anesthesia, so you donât have to worry about those side effects either.
Addiction and Substance Use
Doctors have started using TMS as a treatment for dangerous symptoms that come with addiction, especially among people suffering from depression as a withdrawal symptom. TMS helps stimulate their brain and return control over their mood.
The treatment has also been effective in fighting cravings, though the exact mechanism is unknown. In a double-masked study on 16 people who received rTMS for cocaine addiction, 11 were free of their symptoms after a month of TMS. This is compared to only three who received standard treatment.
Parkinsonâs Disease
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is also being explored as a treatment option for Parkinsonâs disease. This neurodegenerative disorder is characterized by motor symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with movement. While TMS is not yet FDA-approved for Parkinsonâs, studies have shown that it could help improve motor function and reduce symptoms by stimulating specific brain regions involved in movement control. This offers hope for patients seeking non-invasive alternatives to traditional treatments.
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients may also find relief with TMS. This chronic illness affects the central nervous system, leading to symptoms like fatigue, muscle weakness, and cognitive impairments. Research suggests that TMS can help alleviate these symptoms by promoting neuroplasticity and improving neural communication. Though not yet FDA-approved for MS, TMS presents a promising complementary therapy to enhance the quality of life for those living with this condition.

Note
Iâm not sure if this is something youâve heard of or are interested in trying. I know youâve explored so many options and done so much research. Thereâs a thing called transcrainial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS is FDA approved for treatment of treatment resistant depression. They use it off label for other things too. One of which is migraines. Iâm not sure what type of migraine or if that part is even applicable to you since at least some of yours seem to come from a part of your body other than your head. I just started it recently and itâs made a HUGE difference in my depression. Iâve been able to exercise and for the most part do things (from like an executive function perspective) for the first time I can remember. Iâve been struggling with depression since at least 5th grade.
I really hope youâre able to put out all of your fire soon, and you get out of fire season eventually.
Iâm so glad to hear itâs working for you! Itâs something I really want to try and intend to bring up with my doctors soon. Itâs just been low on my priority list for a bit.

The Bad Opinion Haver has a bad opinion: the worst tier list in existence.
(or at least the worst tier list I've seen in the last 3 to 5 business days)
So... I have beef. It's a silly beef, but I have it nonetheless. I've mentioned Lily Orchard the Bad Opinion Haver a few times before, and her uncanny ability to get under my skin. Right now, of all her myriad Bad Opinions(TM) my ire is drawn mostly to this:
Per the original description:
My wife (Lily) and I (Mikaila) made a tierlist for Baldur's Gate companions.
Before you jump to your keyboards to react, we judged them based on the following criteria.
Viability in a party
Relevance to the story
Their own character story
Their romance (if applicable)
The quality of content surrounding them
They were only tiered based on games they were a companion in (so Ajantis in BG2 and Viconia in BG3 weren't considered).
And they were tiered evenly, so if they were really strong in one area but weak in the others, they were tiered lower. So S Tier is high marks in everything, while RP tier is "Literally every other character in their respective game is better than them, only take them if you're roleplaying."
Now, of the Baldurs Gate CRPG series, I have only played BG3 to completion. I'm currently halfway through Baldur's Gate 1 (specifically the Enhanced Edition), and I haven't touched BG2 or Siege of Dragonspear yet. Regardless, I feel comfortable in saying the above tier list is one of the worst tier lists I've seen, and the reasons why have nothing to do with the specific placement of any character.
So, what makes it so awful? Well:
Reason one:
There, I fixed it (but not really)
The tier list ranks 57 characters from four separate games in a series, with the first game in the series having been published 25 years before the most recent one. That is a lot of characters for anyone to remember, and yet Lily Orchard didn't so much as bother to include their names, let alone the games that they appear in. (now, you could argue that this tier list is meant for people who already recognize all of the Baldurs Gate characters from portraits alone. That would be a fair assumption, if it weren't for the fact that 17 of the 57 characters above are not represented by their official Baldurs Gate artwork. In fact, I'm not 100% certain that I got all of the characters correct in my labelling - it's possible that I mixed up 2 or more characters, because I am working purely off of the information provided in the original tier list, which is... not a lot)
Reason 2: The criteria for this tier list are too broad.
To recap, we have 57 different characters from 4 different games, and they're being rated on 5 separate criteria:
Viability in a party (in other words, mechanical effectiveness)
Relevance to the story
Their own character story
Their romance (if applicable)
The quality of content surrounding them (we'll get back to this one)
Any one of these criteria would make for a good tier list... by itself. By ranking characters on all 5 at once, the reasoning for placing each character in each position becomes more muddied, especially when you withhold the information that would lead to each character being where they are. ... Okay, I said I wasn't going to get too into the specific placements of any character, but to illustrate my points I will bring up one example; Dynaheir is present in the S tier of this list, which implies that she scores exceptionally well in all 5 categories. So let's run through them quickly:
Mechanical Effectiveness: Dynaheir is certainly a good character in BG1, but her effectiveness is hampered by the same thing that hampers all mages in BG1 - limited spell selection due to low character level. For the first 4 or so levels she'll spend most of the time parked behind the tanky front-liners, mooching off of XP from the mundane fights until she's ready to bring out the big guns at 5th level. If you do use her spells in every fight, you're going to be resting a lot, and that brings its own complications in BG1.
Relevance to the story: Strictly speaking, none of the BG1 companions are essential to the story, not even Imoen. The game has 25 optional characters, and you'll be bringing at most 5 along with you at any given time. That's just not a lot of opportunity for deep character interaction.
Their own character story: Dynaheir will occasionally banter with Minsc, but the only quest relevant to her in BG1 is the one in which you first encounter her, and that could be argued to be Minsc's personal quest first and foremost. Then comes Baldurs Gate 2... and she's dead. :/
Their romance: Dyna's not romanceable, so this does not apply.
The quality of content surrounding them: I said we'll get back to this one. Be patient.
Now, to be fair, I did ask Lily directly why Dynaheir is in S tier, and here is her response:
"She's in S Tier because Mages are S Tier. Especially in BG1 with the Sleep/Web combo."
Okay, so Dynaheir is in S tier exclusively for mechanical reasons. Only... if that were the case:
Why are other mages from Baldurs Gate 1 (Edwin, Xzar, Quayle and Xan) not also in S tier with Dynaheir?
Is Lily aware that Dynaheir, who is barred from casting Enchantment spells, cannot cast Sleep?
I'm sure if I asked Lily about every other character in the tier list, I'd get a similar explanation that would lead to similar follow-up questions. However, I can't help but assume that the list's ambiguity is the whole point; Lily doesn't want these opinions to be open to debate.
Reason 3: The criteria for this tier list don't apply equally to every Baldur's Gate game
Let's cycle back to that first point; party viability / mechanical effectiveness. In Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 this is pretty important, because characters in these games are locked into the choices made at character creation. (this could lead to a whole separate discussion about accessibility in RPGs and "the burden of foreknowledge", but I digress). Aerie will always be a Cleric/Mage, Alora will always be a Thief, Khalid will always be a simp for Jaheira et cetera, so if you want a balanced party, you will have to consider the mechanical benefits of each character, as well as their banter and individual story beats.
In Baldur's Gate 3, you can change any companion's whole class at any time for 100 gold pieces.
In other words, the first criteria (Mechanical effectiveness) is completely irrelevant to Baldurs Gate 3 characters.
Before you say that shouldn't matter; every companion in Baldur's Gate 3 has unique dialog options for the Bard-only cantrip Vicious Mockery, and unique roars when entering a Barbarian rage. The ability to adjust any origin PC's class and abilities is a fully supported and wholly intentional part of the game, and should be considered as such when creating a tier list such as this one. Especially when you consider what else this tier list accounts for:
Reason 4: This tier list is based on heavily modded versions of each game.
Hey, remember that last point that I kept saying we'd get back to? Here it is again:
The quality of content surrounding (the character)
By content, Lily Orchard is referring to mods.
This isn't a matter of speculation; Lily Orchard is very open about the mods she uses when playing Baldur's Gate 1, 2 and even 3. Notably, Lily has often claimed that the Imoen Romance Mod (a mod that allows you to romance your own half-sister) is one of the greatest romances of all time. Given that Imoen is S-tier in Lily Orchard's rankings, and that romance is one of the list's criteria, the aforementioned mod has definitely made an impact on the tier list.
I'm not here to begrudge Lily's decision to play the Baldur's Gate games with mods, that's her choice as a consumer of media. As a reviewer, though, she should absolutely be basing her opinions off of un-modded content. Otherwise, the game that she plays could be (and demonstrably is) radically different to the game that a follower is playing.
Let me put it another way: several of the companions in Baldurs Gate 1 come in pairs - if you recruit one, the other joins automatically (or after a short quest). Dismiss one, and the other leaves with them. It's possible to travel with only one of the pair (usually by letting the unwanted character die and then dismissing the corpse) but the expectation is that you play with both, or with neither.
Lily has tiered the members of these pairings separately in the above tier list -because- you can play with separate characters via the above method. Now, if I were to install a mod that makes it so that paired characters will always leave if their dead companion is dismissed, that would impact the tier list above - an S tier character isn't going to be S tier if they're permanently attached to dead weight, after all. You could argue that this shouldn't matter, because I'm basing my opinions on a fully optional mod - and you'd be absolutely right.
The other reason to disqualify a tier list based on mods is one of self-selection. As previously mentioned, the Imoen Romance Mod has definitely influenced Lily's rankings, but I daresay that she included it because she likes Imoen in the first place. To that extent, what's to say that Lily hasn't specifically included modded content for characters she already enjoys playing? Neera the Wild Mage is in F-tier because Lily doesn't like the random nature of Wild Magic surges, but what's to stop her from adding a "good outcomes for Wild Magic only" mod, other than the fact that she already doesn't like Neera?
In Conclusion:
This tier list is bad. It's bad because it's incomprehensible, it's bad because it's indefensible, and it's bad because it's based on a version of Baldur's Gate that you will never play.
Tier lists by their very nature invite discussion - there is no tier list on the internet that won't spark up some level of disagreement, after all. And yet, by its obstinate ambiguity, this tier list has tried its damnedest to stifle any and all discussion on its core subject - forcing me to discuss, instead, just how much it fucking sucks.
Thank you for reading.
PS: I may as well share who my current BG1 party is comprised of - by Lily's metric, I have 2 S-tiers, a D-tier, an F-tier and one RP-tier. We're having fun~
#spaghetti thoughts#Baldurs Gate#saga of the Bad Opinion Haver#Lily Orchard#I feel like I'm going to regret adding the LO tag#but then again I typed all that garbage out - so it deserves to be seen.#Baldurs Gate 3#DnD

Magnetic brain stimulation therapy | Texas Tms Center
In the evolving landscape of mental health treatment, breakthroughs are continually offering new avenues for hope. For individuals grappling with persistent depression, anxiety, OCD, or even certain chronic pain conditions, traditional treatments don't always provide the desired relief. This is where Magnetic brain stimulation therapy emerges as a powerful, non-invasive alternative, providing a beacon of light for many who felt their options were exhausted. If you're in Texas and exploring advanced mental health solutions, understanding the offerings at Texas TMS Center is a crucial step forward.
What is Magnetic Brain Stimulation Therapy?
At its core, magnetic brain stimulation therapy, often referred to as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment that uses magnetic fields to painlessly stimulate specific nerve cells in the brain. These nerve cells are often underactive in individuals suffering from mood disorders. By delivering targeted magnetic pulses, TMS aims to reactivate and restore balance to these neural circuits, improving communication pathways and alleviating symptoms.
Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), TMS does not involve anesthesia, nor does it typically induce seizures or memory loss. Patients remain awake and alert during the sessions, which usually last between 18 to 37 minutes, depending on the specific protocol. This makes magnetic brain stimulation therapy a convenient and accessible option for many, allowing them to resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.
The Science Behind the Breakthrough
The brain functions through intricate electrical signals. In conditions like depression, certain areas, particularly the prefrontal cortex, show reduced activity. Magnetic brain stimulation therapy works by delivering focused magnetic pulses that induce small electrical currents in these targeted brain regions. This stimulation helps to:
Reactivate Underactive Neurons: By increasing activity in dormant neural pathways, TMS helps the brain restore healthy function.
Modulate Neurotransmitter Levels: The changes in brain activity can influence the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which are critical for mood regulation.
Enhance Brain Connectivity: TMS can improve the communication and synchronization between different brain regions, leading to more balanced and effective brain function.
The precision of magnetic brain stimulation therapy allows clinicians to target specific areas of the brain without affecting other regions, leading to fewer side effects compared to systemic medications.
Conditions Treated by Magnetic Brain Stimulation Therapy
While most commonly known for its effectiveness in treating Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), particularly for those who haven't responded to antidepressant medications, magnetic brain stimulation therapy is also showing promise and has gained FDA clearance for other conditions, including:
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Targeting specific brain circuits involved in OCD symptoms.
Anxiety Disorders: While not a primary FDA indication for all anxiety disorders, it's often used off-label or in conjunction with other treatments for co-occurring anxiety with depression.
Migraine Headaches: A specific form of TMS is cleared for the acute treatment of migraine.
Smoking Cessation: Recent FDA clearance has also opened up possibilities for TMS in helping individuals quit smoking.
The research into the broader applications of magnetic brain stimulation therapy continues to expand, offering hope for even more conditions in the future.

So we were thinking about laws relating to parallelization, and kind of realized that a lot of them can be... kind of related to each other?
So like- you have Amdahl's law, which is Tâ = B + ((Tâ - b) / n), which is talking about the fundamental limit of how fast you can get something by parallelizing it computationally, and how that depends fully on the part of the task which can't be parallelized. And this got me thinking about diminishing returns in general, and how this might be applicable to a much, much broader problem than parallel computation.
So...
While this is not going to be a full derivation or proof, I will explain my thinking at least partially, as well as define some terms for the sake of my own sanity in this.
We start off by defining what we're looking for, which, in this case, will be Tâ, of the time of the task.
Then we set that equal to an infinite series.
Why? Because there can be an infinite number of limiting factors for any task, but most of them are so small that they don't make a difference, so guess what! We can call say that it converges in most cases!
This infinite series of limiting factors is going to be labeled Lâ, and represents the sum of (Lâ * Lâ * Lâ...).
And while I will say that the Lâ series will not have a constant rate, that rate will always approach zero the more factors you add. Think about it, there are only so many things which you can name as limiting factors which significantly hamper the progress of something, the more you try and name, the less significant they become.
So now, we need to account for the time of the task itself.
This can be done by defining T as the time it takes to complete the task with no parallelization and no limiting factors, and P as the length to which that task can be made parallel. T may be any real number, but P must be greater than 0, but no greater than 1.
And... this is the result.
Tâ = Lâ + (P(T + Lâ))
The time it takes to complete a task is equal to the geometric sum of all limiting factors involved with that task plus the sum of the extent to which the task is made parallel times the sum of the base time of the task and the limiting factors involved.
...I have zero idea if this makes any sense, if it's actually applicable, or if it works at all. This is me wanting to try my hand at a derivation and having an interesting thought about how there may be a generalized form of something.
Will reblog with an update once we can talk to our math friends(tm) about it.

OP has a lot to say about transwomen that isnât so nice, so letâs try this again!
HOMOPHOBES INCLUDE:
Ben, who emphasizes when asking âHow do you view lesbian and gay relationshipsâ in That Tone TM. He calls things gay if theyâre too colorful, and as a put down.
Breanna, who ships and fetishized her cute gay #itscalledyaoi ships but wonât be friends with lesbians because sheâs afraid theyâll hit on her. She wants a Token #GayBestFriend like âcoolâ girls in tv shows.
Marissa, who will kiss girls when she feels lonely to make her boyfriend pay attention to her because âitâs sexyâ.
Josh, who thinks lesbians are âhotâ in porn but doesnât actually think theyâre real or should have rights or get married; actually no woman should have rights so he gets a misogynistic award too!
Bethany, who drinks in lesbian bars and makes advances on couples to film when she gets a threesome and sends it to her boyfriend. She also likes to send nude snapchats of herself to the other lesbians and bisexuals from work to prove sheâs sexy. She doesnât use labels like âsingleâ or âtakenâ or âstraightâ or âgayâ so no one else should when itâs convenient for her self esteem issues.
Christopher says lesbians are just girls who donât think theyâre worthy of a guy and just need to work on their issues because theyâll find a good man when they âstop acting so gayâ. He likes to stalk his first dates for a few weeks before he decides they âarenât worth the troubleâ and hovers over the next girl.
Michelles step-daughter came out before she went off to college and insists she only stop by for short visits on the holidays so the rest of her conservative family doesnât find out yet. Down the line when they do, sheâll say nothing when her family members are rude to her step-daughters girlfriend and calls it âa sceneâ when her husband defends his daughter. When her son comes out a year later, sheâll break into tears and do everything in her power to prevent him from seeing his boyfriend.
David thinks domestic partnership and âstraight marriageâ are the same. As an EMT he has refused boyfriends/girlfriends to ride in the ambulance because theyâre not really family. Gay marriage is against god.
James calls his son a lady killer at the ripe age of two months. He says heâs not a homophobe because âI have family whoâs gayâ. He just âdoesnât understand itâ and never wants to talk about it. âItâs kind of gross when you really think about it.â He says âno homoâ a lot.
Lisa has tattoos of bible quotes against sins and sinners. Theyâre on her Facebook and Instagram. Being gay is against god. Sheâs on her third marriage - the first two fell apart because she cheated; but itâs okay because she wound up marrying the guy she cheated with. She tells her church to pray for her gay brother.
Selina had gay friends in high school. She was an âallyâ in a LGBT group in high school that was 90% straight, cis, white boys and girls. She thinks she knows everything there is to be gay, bi, and trans because sheâs had friends of each and has helped stood up for them in school. She also voted republican, and refuses to talk to her family because her brother is trans and her mother who has been single for 20 years has realized sheâs gay. She wonât talk to any of her former high school âfriendsâ because she âis tired of the drama, they said I was a bad friendâ because she never actually went to any events or helped stand up for them. She admits later she knows it looks good on her college application and believes âeveryoneâs soooo obsessed with diversityâ.
Karen found out one of her daughters friends is gay and anytime she came over, she would send her home early from parties and sleepovers and lie to her parents about her misbehavior and rudeness so she would supposedly get in trouble. She has bible quotes on her daughters wall and crosses everywhere.
Franks daughter has been struggling with money and has moved back in, but when she canât hide her secret anymore because it makes her feel guilty and she comes out to him, sheâs kicked out and isnât able to talk to him about anything; their relationship down the line is never the same.
Justin says he doesnât hate gays, but anytime one of his friends does anything not manly enough heâll throw âfagâ at them. Tranny isnât a slur, nor is pussyboy; and only gay guys show any form of emotion.
Charlie refuses to call one of his childhood friends by their new name and pronouns because they havenât âreally transistionedâ. You canât really be trans* if you donât change your voice, bind, and have an operation.
Dillan supposedly is a good alley. In one of his friend groups he and his best friend are the only two straight people. He also thinks pride is a bit ridiculous, gays being able to get married now is totally equal to the âstraight marriageâ despite what his friends say, and doesnât fully recognize different sexualities of the couples because âdoes it matter if sheâs bi if sheâs dating a guy?â And âdoes it matter if youâre pan if youâre dating another girlâ? He also believes lesbians will always be virgins because âreal sex is a penis penetrating a vaginaâ.
Danny refuses to recognize any non-straight non-cis characters in tv shows or in rpg games with his friends. When he stopped being invited , he argued he was totally okay with âall that gay agenda stuffâ but didnât understand why it needed to be talked about all the time or why his friends wanted to play gay or trans characters.

Life Insurance for Depression, Anxiety, and Mental Disorders
Researching how to get life insurance with depression, anxiety, or mental health disorders? In this guide, we'll go over what you need to know to get coverage then work with you directly to get life insurance coverage one on one.
Depression and Anxiety Disorders
Mood and anxiety disorders are common, and the mortality risk is due primarily to suicide, cardiovascular disease, and substance abuse. Risk is highest early in the course of the disorder or within 2 years of hospitalization. Mood disorders are divided into Unipolar (depression) and Bipolar Disorders (manic depressive). Dysthymia is a chronic low-grade depression that does not meet the criteria for Major Depression. Criteria for Major Depression require a history of depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure for at least 2 weeks plus 4 or more of the following: Weight ChangeSleep DisturbancePsychomotor Agitation or Retardation,FatigueFeelings of Worthlessness or GuiltDifficulty ConcentratingSuicidal Ideation To meet the criteria for Bipolar Disorder, there must be a history of at least one episode of mania (abnormally elevated mood) in addition to the Major Depression criteria. Anxiety disorders include: Panic DisordersAgoraphobiaSocial PhobiaSocial Anxiety Disorder (SAD)Simple PhobiaGeneralized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Symptoms include worry and nervousness, racing heart, breathlessness, dizziness, sweats, headache, insomnia, and other vague complaints. Depressive disorders often overlap with anxiety disorders, and in the long term, many patients continue to have symptoms. Recurrences are common for both mood and anxiety disorders.
TREATMENTS
The standard treatment of mood disorders includes pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are the mainstay of therapy for both anxiety and mood disorders, other antidepressants (e.g. the older tricyclic group) are also available. More severe cases may require antipsychotic agents or a noninvasive neuromodulation procedure. Noninvasive neuromodulation uses an electric current or magnetic field to stimulate the brain. These procedures include electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS.) ECT is more effective than TMS but requires sedation. Some newer, investigational approaches to treating refractory major depression are being used. Ketamine is an anesthetic drug that can transiently alleviate treatment-resistant major depression. Its use for depression is off-label, meaning it has not been approved by the FDA for this indication. Buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) is most commonly used to treat opioid dependence or chronic pain but is sometimes used (off-label) for resistant depression. Other noninvasive neuromodulation procedures that are being investigated are magnetic seizure therapy, focal electrically administered seizure therapy, transcranial direct current stimulation, transcranial low voltage pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation. Invasive/surgical neuromodulation is used for severe major depression that has not responded to numerous standard treatments over 2 â 5 years. The procedure consists of surgical deep brain stimulation followed by direct cortical stimulation and ablative neurosurgery.
Underwriting
The underwriter takes historical and current factors into consideration when assessing the risk of someone with a mood disorder. There is usually limited objective data so the underwriter needs to use judgment. Some of the questions that the underwriter answers are: How many symptoms did the person initially present with? How many symptoms does the person have now?Has the person had more than one episode of a mood disorder? Did the person respond to first-line treatment drugs? Has the person been stable with current treatment or has the medication been adjusted recently? Has the person been compliant with the treatment and follow up? How many favorable and unfavorable factors does the person currently have? (refer to Favorable and Unfavorable Factors table below) Does the person have any history of psychiatric hospitalization? Inpatient or outpatient? Voluntary or involuntary? What was the length of stay? Does the person have any history of ECT or TMS treatment, suicide ideation or suicide attempt? Does the person have any history of investigational treatment approaches such as Ketamine or other non-invasive or invasive neuromodulation? Favorable Scenarios for Underwriting Insured only had a single episodeThe diagnosis is less than a year ago.No overt marital or family disharmony Actively participating in counseling Stable occupation No criticism of habits No underlying physical illness No family history of mental illness Stable personality Good social support Compliant with medications Regular but infrequent maintenance follow up care only by a counselor or a primary physician No history of lost work or school time No other psychiatric diagnosis Age 18 â 65 at time of diagnosis No history of moving violations or driving criticism Use of 1 â 2 psychiatric medications Unfavorable Scenarios for Underwriting Recurrent episodes Recent diagnosis Marital or family disharmony Not actively participating in counseling if recommended Occupational instability Alcohol/drug misuse Chronic or disabling health conditions Family history of mental illness Behavior disturbance including violence and adverse MVR information Work-related pressures and financial difficulties Self-adjusts medicine or non-compliant with medication No regular follow-up care or frequent care and the primary caregiver is a psychiatrist History of lost work or school time Other psychiatric or personality disorder diagnosis Age at time of diagnosis is over the age of 65 Multiple moving violations or driving criticism Use of 3 or more psychiatric medications Applicants under age 18, with a history of drug or alcohol abuse, with psychotic conditions, or with frequent panic attacks will be given individual consideration.

Future of TMS Therapy | Relief Mental Health
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a game-changer for those who havenât found relief with traditional treatments like medication or talk therapy. Currently, BrainsWay Deep TMS⢠therapy is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxious depression, and smoking cessation. But many doctors also use it as an off-label treatment for a range of other mental and physical diagnoses. Weâll explore this in more detail in this article, but first, letâs understand how TMS works.
Explores the future of TMS Therapy, focusing on its potential for off-label treatments. It discusses emerging research and applications beyond depression, including conditions like PTSD, chronic pain, and more. The article highlights TMS as a promising, non-invasive option with expanding therapeutic possibilities in mental health and beyond.

A Beginnerâs Guide to Google Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager has come a long way since its release in 2012. Throughout the years, the interface terminology has changed, and additional features have been added that make it much easier to use. Tim Allenâs previous post on âGetting to Grips with Google Tag Managerâ gives a great introduction for the 2014 features at a time when GTM was more difficult for beginners. But now many features have been condensed and simplified, such as âTags, Rules and Macrosâ which is now âTags, Triggers, and Variables.â
So how do you use Google Tag Manager in 2019? Iâll take you through how to create a tag that will help you track user behavior on your site and go through some of the newest features GTM has now built in for user friendliness and accessibility.
Feel free to skip around the article to start learning about GTM!
How does GTM work? Setting Up GTM Tags, Triggers, and Variables Creating a Tag Letâs Talk More on Variables Testing with GTM Preview and Debugging Your Tag Wrap Up
But before we dive into the detailsâŚ
What is a Tag Manager?
Itâs useful to think of a Tag Management System (TMS) as similar in operation to a Content Management System (CMS). Both can make changes to the entire site via one interface portal, without needing the help of a developer to change the code for every tag. Â A developer is only needed for the initial installation of the GTM container code snippet.
The purpose of a tag management system is to manage the implementation of analytics platforms in tracking user interactions via a user-friendly interface.
Many popular analytics platforms have released their own type of tag manager, such as Launch by Adobe Analytics. These various tag managers, much like their analytics platform counterparts, use different terminology but are very similar in functionality. Most TMS solutions are compatible with popular platforms and applications, built to integrate smoothly without additional programming (at least thatâs what they advertise).
GTM is compatible with a number of analytics platforms. To view a full list of GTM supported platforms, click here.
How Does Google Tag Manager Work?
GTM inserts JavaScript and HTML tags, created from the user-friendly interface portal, into the GTM container that is hard-coded onto every page of your website.
The GTM container is a piece of JavaScript (and non-Javascript) code that enables the GTM to fire tags.
Setting up GTM
Creating a GTM account for your website is fairly quick.
Follow the steps on the Google Tag Manager site by inputting your information.
After creating your account, you will be brought the main GTM interface. At the top of the workspace, you will see the unique ID number given to your GTM container.

After clicking into the container ID, you will see 2 code snippets:
The first code snippet uses javascript to fire tags, and GTM instructs you to paste this into the <head> of every page of your website. Â The second code snippet is an HTML iframe that is used when javascript is not available and should be placed after the opening <body> tag.

This way, if users have disabled javascript, the tag will still fire from the second code snippet.
You can find more details on setting up your GTM container from the Google Support Site.
Tags, Triggers, and Variables
When you first look into the workspace page of GTM, youâll see sections on the left hand side labeled Tags, Triggers, and Variables.

These 3 are the building blocks of GTM. Â Iâve outlined their definitions below so you can get a better understanding of what each one entails.
Tags â Tags are tracking codes and code fragments that tell GTM what action to take on that page.
Example: Sending a pageview hit to Google Analytics.
Triggers â Triggers specify the conditions under which a Tag should fire.
Example: A trigger with a condition to only fire a Tag when a user views URLs containing the path /blog/.
Variables â Variables are values used in triggers and tags to filter when a specific tag should fire. GTM provides built-in variables and allows you to create custom user-defined variables.
Example: A âclickâ class variable has a value name (such as a word string) assigned to buttons on the website.
We will go more in depth on how to use each of these in the next sections.
How to Create a Tag
Iâll take you through a simple example of creating a tag for a Pageview across the site.
But first, I should preface the creation of this tag by explaining that you should not create a Pageview tag if you have already installed a Google Analytics container on your site. Creating a Pageview tag in GTM in addition to the GA container will cause a duplication in pageview hits every time a user visits a page, skewing your data. To clarify, you can have a GA account where GTM sends the data to without having the GA container installed on your site.
For the purpose of understanding how GTM works, using a universal concept such as a pageview will help to illustrate the use of tags, triggers, and variables.
To start off, we will navigate to the left hand side of the main interface and click on the Tags section. Then, click New (Tag).

Then we can name the tag and select the tag type as Google Analytics, which is where we will be sending the data from the tag. You can also see below the other tag type options if you are sending data to a different platform.

Next we will configure the tagâs settings. Ensure that the default track type of Page View is selected.

Inputting your Google Analytics Universal tracking ID
This part is crucial to make sure the data gets sent to your GA, so be sure to input the correct info!
There are two ways to do this:
Get the Google Analytics tracking ID by going into Admin > Property Settings > Tracking ID. Click âEnable overriding settings in this tag and input the Tracking ID.

Or you can create a custom constant variable, that will always contain your UAID, so you never have to remember it.
This second method leads us further into the concept of variables.
Letâs Talk More on Variables
Assuming youâve never used your GTM account, setting up the variables in GTM will be important for creating your tag.
When you view the âVariablesâ window of GTM, youâll see 2 options: Built-In Variables and User-Defined Variables.

Built-In Variables are variables that GTM can define for you by detecting elements in the code. They include some of the more common variable types such as clicks or pages. Sometimes a website will not have the minimum criteria within the code for GTM to detect the right elements and use its built-in variables; In this case they must be custom made through the User-Defined Variables instead.
Iâd recommend adding all of the Click, Form, and History variables to start off. Â Click Configure and check the boxes on the left hand side to include them.

View all of Googleâs built-in variables, with their definition on the Google Support website. Also another great resource to use is Simo Ahavaâs variable guide, where he goes in depth on each built-in variable and ways to utilize them.
User-Defined Variables hold the value that you define for them, whether its numerical, a selection of URLs, or a name string found in an element.
For instance, a GA constant variable used to hold the GA ID associated with your analytics account can be created. Â This is very useful when you are creating a tag, so that you wonât have to keep going back to your GA account to input your ID.
You can create a constant GA ID variable by selecting User-Defined Variables New > Variable Configuration > Constant > Value (Input your GA ID) > Save.
Going back to our tag example, you can now choose to input a constant variable..
Make sure that you uncheck âEnable overriding settings in this tagâ and use the Google Analytics Settings dropdown to select the variable ID.

Now we can create the trigger that will fire our Pageview tag!
Underneath the tag configuration, click into the Triggering field. Â A menu prompts to âChoose a triggerâ will appear. Â Click on the + sign in the upper right hand corner.

Name the trigger and choose Page View as the trigger type.

Make sure that All Page Views is selected, so that our tag will fire on every page of the site and click Save.

Now that we have both the tag and trigger configuration, click Save. Youâve just created your first tag!
Testing with GTM Preview and Debugging Your Tag
So youâve created your tag, but how do you know its working?
First click onto the Preview button in the top right hand corner of the workspace.
Next, open your site in a new tab. You will now see at the bottom, much like chrome dev tools, a box appear.

Upon closer inspection, the left hand side shows a summary of the events that first loaded onto the page in sequential order: 1. Message, 2. Message, 3. Pageview, 4. DOM Ready, etc. While the top is labeled Tags, Variables, and Data Layer.

By default, you will be viewing the Tags window, showing you all of the tags on the page, whether they have fired or not.
When you click anything on the page, the Preview box will update with any tags fired, as well as the variables in connection to the elements where the interaction took place.
For instance, when the âsign upâ button on the homepage is clicked, we see in the left hand summary that the event gtm.formSubmit loaded. Â By clicking into the variables section, we are now able to see the variables and their values that are associated with the âsign upâ button.

So what exactly are the variables associated with this button that GTM is showing? They are the variables located in the HTML elements that GTM detects within the code of the signup form.
The same can be seen in chrome dev tools by inspecting the elements on the page. The difference is that GTM makes this easy for you by detecting them, summarizing the HTML variables and their values, and putting it into a user friendly format.
In Chrome Dev Tools:

In GTM Preview:

When youâve added a tag to GTM, it isnât live on the site yet. Â This is where itâs important to test the tag to ensure its both firing and sending the data to GA.
We can see by just loading the page that the new tag is firing!

If your tag isnât firing, a useful way to figure out why is by clicking onto the tag in the summary and viewing the firing triggers. If any part of the trigger doesnât apply, there will be a red X next to the Filter.

Now we can publish the new tag!
First, click the Submit button in the upper right-hand corner of the main interface.

Next, name the version container and description to let others know what you changed, typically the tags name and what it does.

After publishing your tag, you should keep watching the data in GA over time to make sure that the trigger conditions are only capturing the the user interaction we want.
Extension for GTM Tag Testing
Probably the most useful chrome browser extension for GTM is the GTM Debugger.
Once downloaded, hit F12 and the F5 to view the event data and Google Analytics Hits.

Much like preview, testing the tag works here as well, with live event updates.

However, this extension only displays information for tags that are live in the GTM container.
Wrap Up
As you have read, there is a lot to consider when using the power of GTM on you or your clientâs website. GTM can be used to create as simple or as complex a tag as needed. However, itâs best to try to keep things as simple and as scalable as possible.
Whether agency or in-house, its best to keep inventory of tags. Â This includes creating descriptive and intuitive names for the tags, triggers, and variables. It also allows others to understand what kind of tags the container has live.
The Versions page shows you what container version is live on the site and allows you to click into the different versions to see what tags it contains.

Hope you found this article useful and enjoy creating your tags!

Can I Put A Trademark On My Logo?
A trademark, trade mark, or trade-mark is a recognizable sign, design, or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source from those of others, although trademarks used to identify services are usually called service marks. The trademark owner can be an individual, business organization, or any legal entity. A trademark may be located on a package, a label, a voucher, or on the product itself. For the sake of corporate identity, trademarks are often displayed on company buildings. It is legally recognized as a type of intellectual property.
The first legislative act concerning trademarks was passed in 1266 under the reign of Henry III, requiring all bakers to use a distinctive mark for the bread they sold. The first modern trademark laws emerged in the late 19th century. In France the first comprehensive trademark system in the world was passed into law in 1857. The Trade Marks Act 1938 of the United Kingdom changed the system, permitting registration based on âintent-to-useâ, creating an examination based process, and creating an application publication system. The 1938 Act, which served as a model for similar legislation elsewhere, contained other novel concepts such as âassociated trademarksâ, a consent to use system, a defensive mark system, and non-claiming right system.
Why Use a Trademark?
Individuals and companies have products or services trademarked to protect the product from being used without the permission of the source company. Most countries have patent laws that are designed to protect against copyright infringement. In the United States, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) serves this function.
Although most countries have agencies through which businesses can have their products trademarked, international copyright regulation is more complicated than in the U.S., as there exists no universally recognized patent office, rules, or consistency.
Should I include trademark symbols in my logo?
Letâs clarify the symbols you may see hanging around a logo. They are the âCircled-Râ (ÂŽ), TM (), and SM (â ). These are used to indicate how the mark is protected. The ÂŽ symbol means âregisteredâ and therefore, can only be used once the mark has been officially registered with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). By contrast, and â are usually used with unregistered marks simply to give notice of ownership of rights to that mark â meaning you donât actually have to apply for federal registration to use them. âSMâ means âservice markâ and is technically used to distinguish services, whereas âTMâ (trade mark) should be used to distinguish goods â though is commonly applied to both.
You Should Include
If you have gone through the process of registering your mark, let the world know! Federal registration allows you to use the registered trademark (ÂŽ) symbol. However, you can only use it after USPTO has actually registered the trademark, not without an application or while an application is pending. Following registration, you can only use the registered trademark symbol on or in connection with the goods and/or services listed in the federal trademark registration.
Supposedly, failure to use the symbol may actually limit your ability to collect damages for trademark infringement. But, even this is somewhat subjective. Right now, if you visit the websites of some large brands, youâll notice that Nike does not use any trademark symbols in their websiteâs logo. Neither does Microsoft (even though they used to in the not-so-distant past). Starbucks uses (though Iâm quite sure theyâre federally registered). Staples has ÂŽ. Walmart has none. Burger King has ÂŽ. Bed Bath and beyond hasÂŽ. GE has none. IBM has ÂŽ. Apple has none. Sony has none, but the PlayStation logos (which belong to Sony) all have ÂŽ.
SoâŚwhatâs going on? As I said, inclusion of these symbols is optional. Youâll notice that large brands like these used the ÂŽ symbol in their earlier days. From that, Iâd conclude that once you are a globally-recognized brand (with highly-paid legal departments), you may no longer feel itâs necessary to notify the public that your logo is protected⌠by that point, itâs understood. For young, small, or localized companies, this is not the case, so go ahead and show off that ÂŽ proudly. Youâve earned it. You CAN include ⌠but should you?
Any time you claim rights in a trademark, you may use the or â symbol to alert the public to your claim, regardless of whether you have filed an application with USPTO.
Itâs not necessary to include?
This is a matter of opinion, but I prefer to leave it off. It offers no real legal protection, no more than you already have under common law. Common Law rights state that merely using your logo in the course of your business gives you the rights to it. (Of course, federal registration provides several advantages over common law, but thatâs a different discussion. See âIs it necessary to trademark my logo?â.) I prefer to leave it off because it can often feel arbitrary, like an afterthought, and just adds clutter to a logo (which I am totally not a fan of). This is especially true when the logo is used at small sizes, and the TM or SM tends to look like a random pen smudge because it is so small, which can be distracting.
âŚBut you still may decide you want to use it. Why?
The whole purpose of using or â is to bring attention to the fact that you are claiming rights to it. So to make this claim exceedingly and abundantly clear, you can include or SM; but it does not technically give you any added protection. However, for companies that have legal departments or Intellectual Property lawyers at their disposal, they may often err on the side of caution and advise adding it. Also, consider the subtle psychological cues it communicatesâ will it make the brand appear more legitimate and serious to unknowing consumers? Possibly.
Where should it be placed?
If youâve decided to include , â , or ÂŽ, where should it go? While there is no hard and fast rule, common practice puts it to the top right of the logo. Sometimes it works better at the bottom right instead. If the logo designer knows upfront that you want to include it, they may be able to find a way to work it a bit more seamlessly into the design, so that it helps to balance the logo, as opposed to looking like an afterthought or mistake.
What is Trademark vs. Registered?
The trademark symbol (TM) is a mark that companies often use on a logo, name, phrase, word, or design that represents the business. The registered symbol (R) represents a mark that is a registered trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Some people think you can use the two interchangeably, but this is not the case. The TM symbol actually has no legal meaning. You can use the symbol on any mark that your company uses without registering it.
The most common use of the TM symbol is on a new phrase, logo, word, or design that a company plans to register through the USPTO. The symbol can indicate your intent to move forward with obtaining a legal trademark. It also helps stake your claim in the design, alerting competitors that you plan to use it for your business.
But as mentioned, there is no legal protection when using TM. If you use a mark that infringes on someone elseâs trademark, you still put yourself at risk for legal trouble. When a company or person holds a trademark on a specific design, the mark has restricted use. Only the owner can use, produce, copy, or profit from it. In the event that someone else tries to copy it, that owner can take legal action in a federal court.
So before you add TM to the end of your mark, do some research? Youâll need to make sure that no similar mark already exists in the Trademark Electronic Search System. If you find something similar, the next step is making changes to your mark so that it doesnât infringe.
Once youâve determined that your mark is truly unique, you can start using the TM symbol at the end. The three main placement techniques for notifying competitors of your intent to use the mark are:
⢠Placing a symbol (TM, Ž, * [asterisk], or dagger/double dagger) at the first use of the trademark but not on subsequent uses, then adding a footnote that overviews the trademark
⢠Placing the TM or Ž symbol next to the trademark every time you use it
⢠Using a different font or formatting, such as bold, italic, or uppercase, for the trademarked words to differentiate them from other text. An example of a footnote for the techniques listed might be something like: âThe Apple logo is a registered trademark of Apple, Inc.â You may also choose to include a reference to the legal trademark, such as âThe Apple logo is a trademark registered in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.â Itâs also acceptable to abbreviate the second portion as âReg. U.S. Pat. & Tm. Off.â
Itâs widely accepted to place it at the top left corner of the mark in superscript text. If it doesnât look good there, you can drop it to the bottom right corner in subscript text. But putting it elsewhere is rare. When you add TM to the mark, it makes sense to move forward with the trademark application. Make sure you include all required documentation. If youâre submitting a mark that only contains words, your trademark application must include a mockup of the word or words as you plan to use it/them. When youâre trademarking a logo or symbol, include an image of the mark exactly how it will look when you use it on your product, collateral, or other materials.
Itâs also important to note that youâll only receive trademark protection on the exact design. So you may want to file several applications for a logo or symbol. If you plan to use it in more than one color, submit an application for each version, including one in black and white. This protects your mark in all forms.
Once you receive approval on your trademark application, you can legally start using the registered symbol. Using the symbol shows all competitors, customers, and others in the industry that you legally own the rights to this mark.
When using either mark in print, the general rule is to use it in the first instance of the mark. After that, you can stop using it without losing the legal protection.
When does a logo become a trademark?
Your logo becomes a trademark when it appears on labels, packaging or the product itself and the public recognizes the company behind that particular combination of colors and shapes. Imagine you see a sign with golden arches; you probably are picturing a Happy Meal (also trademarked) or similar fast food item at a McDonaldâs restaurant.
Why wouldnât you register your logo as a trademark?
There are many reasons why you might choose not to pursue trademark registration, depending on your current and anticipated circumstances:
⢠Youâre not sure how long your business will last. Applying for trademark registration is time-intensive, averaging about 10 months to complete the process. The application is expensive, too, with a minimum filing fee of 5 if you prepare and submit the most basic application without legal counsel.
⢠Your logo might change in a couple of years. Only the exact version that is registered is legally protected, and you could actually weaken the registered trademarkâs rights by using variations. Also registered logo trademarks must continue to be used in order to retain their rights. If you donât plan to continue using your logo then there might not be a reason to register.
⢠Your logo canât be registered because it is similar to another already in existence somewhere else in the country. As long as you stick to your geographic area, then state registration or common law probably provides enough protection.

This protects your mark in all forms.
youtube
