Welcome to The GreatDrams Review of 2018, a time for me to have a swift light hearted reflection of the year that was and my personal highlights of the year.

Well what a year it has been; Donald Trump is still president, Daniel Ricciardo sacked off Red Bull to move to Renault - massive error in judgement in my view, Brexit is still as screwed up as ever, Harry and Meghan were wed, my wife and I celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary at the Johnnie Walker Spa F1 Grand Prix, City won the Premiership in record-breaking style, my beloved LFC are finally looking like a ruthless challenger of honours, a load of school kids were trapped then rescued from a cave in Thailand, the World Cup in Russia was one of the best I have ever watched, all manner of politicians embarrassed themselves, their offices, our government and our country and of course, The Greatest Show managed to get me addicted to its soundtrack.

Crazy to even start reflecting on most of the above, but thankfully I only need to reflect on GreatDrams, and of course what's been going on in whisky.

I grew up seeing Blade Runner on random lists of “Greatest Sci-Fi Movies of All Time”, etc. Needless to say, I was practically indoctrinated into loving the movie, before I ever even saw it. When I finally did, I bought the special Blu-Ray 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, with the The Final Cut, both the Original Theatrical and International Theatrical Cuts, and the 1991 Director’s Cut. I watched them all. Back to back to back to back. Personally, my favorite is the Original Theatrical, but I see why people prefer different ones. Again, the most important thing to remember about film is that film is subjective. While there are some objective rules about what is good or bad, most of critique is subjective.

So, this brings me about to watching Blade Runner 2049 last night. Again, I had been ridiculously excited about this movie since it was first announced, and my excitement only built when following announcements came, like Denis Villeneuve being named as Director, Ryan Gosling taking the main role, Harrison Ford’s return as Deckard, and especially Roger Deakins as Cinematographer. With each trailer that came out, just more and more excitement, to where I could hardly contain myself. My sister and her family came to visit over the weekend, so I didn’t take the chance to watch it until Sunday night. Now, Blade Runner 2049 officially has a 2 hour and 44 minute run time, according to IMDB.com, which from what I’ve read, seems quite a daunting task to most movie-watchers. It definitely, to me at least, did not feel anywhere nearly that long. I’ve read several other reviews and listened to several podcasts that have already talked about it, and it seems to be the general consensus that it felt too long and bloated, that Villeneuve was able to just pack in as much as he wanted without restraint, making a too long, boring, movie. I completely disagree. Not only did the time fly by for me, but I was fully wrapped into the movie from practically the first shot (the opening of an eye, a brilliant callback to the original film) to the very end.

Another major complaint that I’ve read online is several writers criticizing Blade Runner 2049 for having a “woman problem”. Now, a lot of what I’m about to say could probably be discounted by most people holding up that argument, seeing that I am a straight white male, but I think that that doesn’t provide nearly the bias that others claim. For me, there were some problems with female representation, but not necessarily the complaints they’re referencing. (The article in question is titled “Blade Runner 2049 Has a Woman Problem”, read from http://movieweb.com/blade-runner-2049-woman-problem/). The first claim this article makes is that Blade Runner 2049 fails the infamous Bechdel Test. For those that don’t immediately recall, the Bechdel Test is commonly used “standard” for testing to see whether movies have deep female characters, based off of three criteria: (1) the movie has at least two women in it, (2) who talk to each other, (3) about something besides a man. If we use this test, I will admit. Blade Runner 2049 does have multiple female characters, and some do converse with each other, the third part is never fulfilled. However, despite the article’s claims that the women in the film fall into male fetish archetypes, I disagree. Robin Wright, as Lieutenant Joshi, shows actual empathy toward Ryan Gosling’s K, while retaining a toughened exterior. Within the world of the story, this makes sense, seeing that she is a Lieutenant within the Los Angeles Police Department, a position which demands a certain amount of toughness. Also, yes, she does drink whisky several times throughout the movie. As did M. Emmet Walsh’s Bryant in the original film, who has a very similar relationship with Deckard as Joshi does K. (Note: If I remember correctly, Bryant doesn’t actually drink in the movie. It is, however, heavily implied that when he pours the two drinks in his office, both drinks were not meant for Deckard.) The article also mentions that Joshi sexualizes K, which I see not as a fault of Joshi’s character, but rather a well-made choice that highlights more complexity, not only of the relationship between Joshi and K, but of the world of 2049 Los Angeles altogether.

The article also briefly discusses the other three main women of the film, Sylvia Hoeks’s Luv, Ana de Armas’s, Joi, and Mackenzie Davis’s Mariette. Luv is described as “a tough-as-nails femme fatale in heels, coldly flirtatious, deadly murderous”, which she is. Believably so. Having seen the original as many times as I have, Luv reminds me an awful lot of a more advanced version of Daryl Hannah’s Pris, a cold, calculating killer. It is also mentioned that Hoeks kisses Gosling’s K in the climax, which the article calls “laughably improbable and out-of-nowhere ...straight out of an S&M dungeon.” Again, I have to disagree with the writer. The kiss, which is delivered at a pivotal moment of the climax, has, to me, a sense of the departing embrace between respectful enemies. (I can explain more, but I want to stay as far away from spoilers as I can for this writing. My next one will most likely go more in depth). Switching to Ana de Armas’s Joi, the article refers to her as “a purchasable housewife style AI program whose greater yearnings all revolve around her devotion” to K. However, I think this claim misses the most important point of Joi, in that she is supposed to be nothing more than a caricature. Joi is an AI program, one early in the eventual evolution of holographic entities. Thinking within the world of the film, the complaint that she is not more fleshed out would be similar to complaining that a Nexus-1 or Nexus-2 Replicant was not fleshed out. They aren’t because they are the early stages. This is even addressed within the movie, as Mackenzie Davis’s Mariette tells her “...inside you, and there’s not as much there as you think.” Speaking of Mackenzie Davis, I actually agree with the article in that the movie “criminally underuses… [her] as a “hooker with a heart of gold,” a movie trope so tiresome and old school it’s almost nostalgic.” Again, I actually agree with this sentiment, and I think it’s one of the very few actual problems I had with the movie.

The next main problem that the article discusses is that Harrison Ford was brought back, while his co-star from the original Sean Young was left behind. Her character, Rachael, is in the movie, though off-screen. It is established rather early in the film that her character died seemingly shortly after the events of the first movie, during childbirth. This revelation is the driving force for the rest of the movie, as K is trying to find the child, due to personal curiosity, while Jared Leto’s Niander Wallace sends Sylvia Hoeks’s Luv to tail K, then bring the child back to him, feeling the need to make Replicants that can produce their own offspring. Rachael’s presence is felt throughout the movie, and even through CGI de-aging, she does make an important surprise cameo in the movie.

So, I’ve realized that I started this as a conversation/review of Blade Runner 2049, and have spent most of my time rebutting an article that I only somewhat disagree with. This may have not been the way I wanted to go about doing this, but it also let me get out some of my first and heaviest thoughts about the film. Now, we go on to my just rambling about a film I absolutely loved, but do have some issues with. First, something I wasn’t overly fond of. I know Villeneuve is a brilliant director, and very few people can tell a story like him and Roger Deakins. That being said, I was left a bit confused by the amount of nudity within the film. I’m not sure necessarily that it was gratuitous, and I’ll feel more certain about that after a second or third rewatch, but it was a bit overwhelming at times. (Particularly a giant holographic nude Joi, though I see why that scene in particular is important.) However, in dealing with nudity, this movie has one of the craziest and most interesting love scenes that I have ever seen. *Mild Spoilers Ahead, But Only Kind Of* There is a scene where K brings home Davis’s Mariette so that he and Joi can be together, physically. In doing so, de Armas’s holographic Joi “syncs” with Mariette, but the sync is slightly off. As such, while they are beginning to kiss and undress, Mariette and Joi seem to phase back and forth, as well as their hands are slightly differently placed on K. Like I said, it was crazy to watch, but definitely interesting. (Also note: very minimal nudity during that scene, almost as if Villeneuve is careful to point out the purity or innocence of this, compared to the lewdness of the streets.)

Overall, I absolutely loved Blade Runner 2049. For those of you looking for an answer as to whether Deckard is a Replicant or not, don’t worry. You don’t get an answer. For those of wondering if K is a Replicant, don’t worry. They tell you he is almost immediately. For those of you that may be worried that the studio made Gosling do a voiceover narration throughout the film, don’t worry. They didn’t. (I love the Original Theatrical Cut of the first movie, with Ford’s narration, but I  definitely think it was for the best that it was not done for this movie). Also, this movie plays out a bit more of just a regular Detective Story rather than more of the classic Film Noir that the original did, but it pays tribute to the original perfectly, without drowning itself in nostalgia or sequel teases. To sum up, I think that if you enjoyed the original, or if you just want a movie that’s different from most things you see, definitely give Blade Runner 2049 a shot. Hopefully you’ll have a better movie-going experience than I did. Side Note: there were two 15-16 year old girls that sat directly in front of me, there only because “Oh my god! Ryan Gosling is so hot!”, who were on their phones almost the entire time, and I still absolutely loved this movie.

P.S. - I feel I can’t talk too much about the main cast without ruining potential spoilers, so expect a much more in-depth spoiler-filled review coming later this week. I might even go watch it again, to reply and possibly counter some of my own arguments I made here, who knows?).

It is popular with the business types and expats on Thursdays. Galileo Lounge Gallileo Lounge is very popular amongst locals and it is located on Waiyaki Way as you head to Westlands. It is extremely busy on weekends or during events but if you get there early enough, you are bound to enjoy the partying experience. The music is awesome and drinks are in plenty although the price points are a little on the higher side. You may have to park a distance away especially on weekends but the club management makes arrangements for security. Club House (K1) Klub House (K1) is famed for reggae night on Thursdays. The reggae night experience usually attracts such rave reviews and it is gets recommended by locals and foreigners alike. K1 is located in Parklands, along Ojijo road and it is always a good spot to spend the evening. Weekends at K1 are pretty busy, same as in most Nairobi clubs, but the choice of drinks is decent and the music will keep you entertained. There is also Klub House 2 (K2) along Baricho Road, Industrial area that is pretty cool spot to rave as well. Choices Pub and Restaurant Choices Pub is located in Industrial Area along Baricho road and it is especially funky for the mature types. Choices Pub has themed weekday nights where certain genres of music are played ranging from R&B to Rock. There’s usually Karaoke or a cool band playing on Thursday nights, Fridays are mostly ‘Old Skool’ and Soul while Saturday nights feature all kinds of music. Drinks and snacks are in plenty and prices are reasonable. Bacchus Lounge Bacchus is located on Woodvale Grove right next to Havana. Both tend to attract similar crowds and the proximity makes it easy to sample both during the same night. Bacchus has some of the best DJs so the music is awesome and the club is popular for hosting grand parties and events on Wednesdays and weekends. Club Tribeka Tribeka is in the CBD, on Kimathi Street opposite Nation Centre.  The location is convenient especially if you are not driving and it is a great place to party with friends. He'd just selected a piece of a particularly nice Spanish Jamon they'd bought; when Icarus appeared magically on his lap. Somehow, Daedalus managed to not spill his whisky or knock over the snacks. The GreatDrams Review of 2017

Welcome to The GreatDrams Review of 2017, a time for me to have a swift light hearted reflection of the year that was and my personal highlights of the year.

Well what a year it has been; several disasters including Grenfell, hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the ascention of Trump and subsequent reduction of power and respect for the Oval Office, Brexit issues still rolling on making the UK government look like chumps, Neymar's ridiculous transfer fee, Chester from Linkin Park passing away, I have settled into my new life up north in Poynton and am absolutely loving it and my boy arrived Feb 5th and visited his first distillery, Laphroaig, June 1st.

Crazy to even start reflecting on most of the above, but thankfully I only need to reflect on GreatDrams, and of course what's been going on in whisky.

This year has been amongst my busiest;

237,000 + GreatDrams readers this year 65k followers across social media and email 1,043 articles now on GreatDrams (including a load scheduled for future publishing) 70 was the age of the oldest whisky I tried this year, along with several in their 60s and 50s... not bad eh?! 42 events attended (lower than usual due to hectic consulting schedule and family life) 30 separate trips from Poynton to London for meetings and workshop (despite not travelling Jan / Feb to be at home with out newborn) 28 flights to Scotland / Ireland for press trips and client meetings (despite not travelling Jan / Feb to be at home with out newborn) 24 distilleries visited across Scotland, Ireland, England, Canada and France 11 spirits judging panels sat on 10 publications written for 10 whisky shows and festivals attended / hosted 6 consecutive new monthly readership records on GreatDrams.com (thank you!) 5 casks bought (Ardmore, Aylsa Bay, Craigellachie, Dailuaine, Glen Moray) 3 awards shortlisted for 2 TV appearances (Sky News and BBC Worldwide) 2 stores stocking my GreatDrams exclusive Ardmore release - more to come, but is a good feeling! 1 award highly commended runner up award 1 GreatDrams independently bottled whisky, Ardmore 8, available here 1 book published and finally released, available here 1 award win - YEAH BABY! Along with all these stunning whiskies and a very busy year, we have seen Scotch exports up, volumes up and huge investment into new and expanding distillery operations throughout Scotland and Ireland in particular, with many new distilleries opening up in England too.

2018 looks to be another busy year with consolidation in the industry marking a strong growth trajectory, lots of distilleries who have been built over the last couple of years will be turning on and some will be releasing their first bottlings after three years of patience, and I'm sure a degree of nervous anticipation.

Thanks for reading, following, liking, Tweeting, Facebooking, Instagramming and tagging GreatDrams across the web this year, I've had a blast and it's been so lovely to help so many GreatDrammers with their whisky choices and to meet a fair few of you at events around the UK over the last twelve months.

You’ve decked the halls with tinsel and wreaths; you’ve stocked up on Hanukkah candles and polished your grandpa’s menorah. Your New Year’s bash may get a disco ball this year (because, really, good riddance, 2017)—but you’re not quite done with all the fancy preparations. Because if there’s ever an occasion to drink fancy, it’s the holiday season. December is the time to pour Champagne (or, okay, good sparkling wine) and mix a little something special into your cocoa. And, to get through all those office parties and ugly-sweater contests, you’re going to need some whiskey…and some rum…and some gin.

Before you hit the store, do a little survey of your calendar so you can stock up in advance on liquor for special gatherings of family and friends, gift bottles for your holiday hosts, and once-a-year investments for truly delicious winter sipping.

Bubbles, Bubbles Everywhere

Buy a dozen bottles of sparkling wine now, and you’ll likely score a discount. That’s money you can put toward better-tasting bubbles for every toast through New Year’s—plus, with a dozen on hand, you’ll be ready for last-minute dinner invites and all those endless end-of-year parties. We’re partial to bright, lemony Vitteaut-Alberti Crémant de Bourgogne Cuvée Agnès (around $24) for cocktail-party situations, especially if there’s seafood or lighter snacks on hand. If your meal stars richer pork or poultry, go with rounder, yeasty Domaine Parigot & Richard Crémant de Bourgogne Brut Blanc de Blancs (around $23), or the wonderfully juicy, citrus- and blackberry-tinged Raventós i Blanc Rosé de Nit (around $24). Worst case: You have a bottle or two left over for Valentine’s Day.

The Easiest Cocktail Ever

It’s wise to be a little wary of premade cocktails—there are bad ones out there, gang—but pour a mini can of Hochstadter’s 84-proof Slow & Low Rock and Rye (around $4) into a nice tumbler with a big cube of ice, and you’ll easily fool the snobs in your midst into thinking you’ve stirred a cocktail to order. Made with rye, raw honey, dried oranges, rock candy, and Angostura bitters, it’s an old-timey concoction that’s essentially a canned Old Fashioned. The citrusy spice feels holiday-appropriate, and the pleasure-to-effort ratio is just right. Planning on serving a crowd? A full bottle of the stuff might be more up your alley.

Rum for Sipping (and for Eggnog)

You may not use a whole bottle of rum when you make eggnog, so you might as well buy something that will also taste good on its own. Luckily, there’s a wealth of options. This time of year, we often recommend the rich, complex El Dorado 15 Year Old ($50) or its more affordable 12-year-old sibling; luscious Zaya Gran Reserva 12 ($30); toasty Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 ($45); or sweet, chocolaty Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva ($22 for 375ml).

Spice Your Cocoa

I’ll always have a weakness for cocoa spiked with tequila and mint schnapps (try it!), but this year, my comfort drink of choice is a big mug of hot chocolate with a tablespoon of St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram (around $28) stirred in after heating. The Jamaican-born rum-based liqueur adds a blast of spice that’s reminiscent of pepper, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg. When you’ve had your fill of spiced cocoa, you can pour a bit into your Old Fashioned, your mulled wine, your hot cider, your coffee, or pretty much any punch.

The Best Gin for Martinis

Fords Gin (around $30) makes a beautifully balanced Martini, its piney, resinous flavors backed up with a chorus of grapefruit, peppercorn, and coriander. Be careful: With a cocktail this silky-smooth, you might find yourself drinking fast. (I trust you’ll already have snacks at the ready.) While Fords won the Serious Eats Martini taste test a few years back, I also truly adore the super-fragrant St. George Terroir Gin (around $33), flavored with sage, Douglas fir, and California bay laurel. Don’t dishonor it with stale vermouth.

(At Least) Two Fresh Bottles of Vermouth

Unless you (or your dinner host) have bought vermouth within the last month and stored it in the fridge, you’ll need fresh vermouth to start the season right. You can’t go wrong with Dolin, especially since a half bottle is just about 10 bucks, but lately I’ve been enjoying Routin Dry Vermouth (around $23), which is especially bright and citrusy thanks to a dose of Sauvignon Blanc. It has a nice floral character, too. If you like a slightly richer Martini, try the alluring, honeyed Martini & Rossi Riserva Speciale “Ambrato” (around $18), which has a round, sweet-and-savory character and a delicately bitter, herbal finish.

While you’re at it, pick up a half bottle of Carpano Antica Formula (around $16) for Negronis, Boulevardiers, or this variation made with apple brandy. Again: Remember to store any open bottles of vermouth in the fridge.

Red, Red Wine

If you followed my advice and bought extra bottles of Cabernet Franc or Passe-Tout-Grains in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, your work here is done. Those wines will do just fine with your Christmas prime rib, crisp-skinned goose, or crown roast of lamb. The Domaine de la Chanteleuserie 2016 Bourgueil “Cuvée Alouettes” ($16), in particular, has an earthy, juniper-infused flavor and affordable price that make it ideal for a crowd. But even the very best gamey, savory, and delicious Chinon, from producers like Olga Raffault or Bernard Baudry, isn’t all that expensive.

Party Whiskey

Serious Eats has a whole list of the best budget bourbons and another of the best budget rye whiskeys from a few years back, both written by Michael Dietsch, the author of Whiskey and Shrubs. There are also some great values recommended in this introduction to bottled-in-bond whiskeys; my go-to these days for cocktails is the spicy Henry McKenna Single Barrel, which I’ve seen for about $27 near me.

After-Dinner Sips

If you haven’t quite sated your sweet tooth even after a plate or two of cookies—or if you prefer to drink your dessert—a small pour of Don Ciccio & Figli’s Concerto (around $32) will do the trick. It’s a luxuriously rich and chocolaty liqueur, flavored with wood-roasted barley, espresso, and various herbs and spices, and it wraps up on a black-licorice note that makes it a nice accompaniment for just one more gingersnap.

Some folks like to sip something a bit more aggressively bitter in the hopes that it’ll settle the stomach. If you’re bored with fernet and the amari you’ve got on hand, try Don Ciccio & Figli’s citrusy Amaro Tonico Ferro-Kina (around $40) with your fruitcake, or score a bottle of bittersweet Barolo-based Chinato, made by Cappellano, Vergano, or G. D. Vajra.

A Fancy Gift for Scotch Lovers

This year has some strong contenders when it comes to new whisky releases, including The Macallan’s robust, toffee- and fruit-laced Edition No. 3 ($95) and Speyburn 15 Year Old ($65), which is a lovely mouthful of graham cracker and marmalade. But the whisky I keep thinking about night after night is The Balvenie’s Peat Week ($99), a 14-year aged Scotch made back in 2002 with earthy Highland peat. (They produce peated whiskies only one week out of the year at the distillery, hence the name.) While there’s an intriguing, smoky finish to this dram, it isn’t the peat monster you might expect from the label. Instead, Peat Week is a chewy, butterscotch-y Scotch with full, round body and a vanilla-scented warmth. I love it.

Something Pretty for the Bar Cart

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention one more—the bottle I’ve most enjoyed having around for dinner parties. Even if you’re not normally the sort to be charmed by a beveled, decanter-type bottle, pouring Suntory’s Hibiki Japanese Harmony ($65) for your guests just feels fancy. And drinking it does, too: This Japanese blended whisky is creamy, mellow, and silky, hinting at toffee, toasted nuts, and a fragrant orange twist that’s been lit by a match. Offer a cheese plate alongside it, and let everyone linger.

While we’re talking about booze gifts that are basically both sculpture and drink, those who like their whiskey headier, sweeter, and richer have Blanton’s Bourbon Single Barrel ($60), complete with metallic horse-and-jockey stopper and beveled-bowling-ball bottle. This guy is gooey caramel and velvet in a glass, as intense as some sort of whiskey concentrate. Which might be just the dram you need when your family’s in town.

News story: Modern Industrial Strategy to boost business support for Scotland

UK Business Secretary Greg Clark will announce the review as part of the UK Government’s ambitious modern Industrial Strategy, which will drive growth across Scotland, boosting skills and improving productivity and infrastructure.

The review of business support, to be conducted in partnership with the Scottish Government, will improve both the consistency and impact of government support to businesses in Scotland, including helping Scottish business access UK supply chain contracts.

Today’s Industrial Strategy white paper sets out a long-term vision for how Britain can build on its economic strengths, address its productivity performance, embrace technological change and boast the earning power of people across the UK.

The White Paper follows extensive engagement by Government with industry, academia and business bodies who submitted almost 2,000 responses to the Green Paper consultation earlier in 2017.

The White Paper focuses on the five foundations of productivity – ideas, people, infrastructure, business environment and places – with a clear and complementary vision for each.

Visiting Glencairn Crystal Studio Ltd in East Kilbride to mark the launch of the Industrial Strategy, Scottish Secretary David Mundell said:

Scotland has a world-renowned reputation for industrial success and innovation, and today’s Industrial Strategy will build on that. It will mean that Scottish businesses can continue to grow and thrive.

We know that some businesses can struggle to get the support they need to grow their businesses effectively, and the current system of support can be inconsistent across the country. The review we are announcing today will ensure Scottish businesses get a more coherent, effective system of support.

UK Government Business Secretary Greg Clark said:

The birthplace of Alexander Graham Bell and Sir Alexander Fleming, Scotland has always made a vital contribution to the UK’s society and its economy. The Government’s new Industrial Strategy is designed to build on Scotland’s economic strengths within the UK as a whole, creating more opportunities, boosting earning power and increasing our productivity.

Scotland has huge economic strengths, including in financial services, life sciences, higher education and research, quantum technologies and advanced manufacturing. We believe that a really effective Industrial Strategy should build on those capabilities, and help create new ones.

Our Industrial Strategy white paper provides us with a landmark opportunity for the UK to make fresh choices about how its economy develops.

In the Strategy, the government has identified four Grand Challenges; global trends that will shape our rapidly changing future and which the UK must embrace to ensure we harness all the opportunities they bring. The four are:

artificial intelligence – we will put the UK at the forefront of the artificial intelligence and data revolution.

clean growth – we will maximise the advantages for UK industry from the global shift to clean growth.

ageing society – we will harness the power of innovation to help meet the needs of an ageing society.

future of mobility – we will become a world leader in the way people, goods and services move.

Each Grand Challenge represents an open invitation to business, academia and civil society to work and engage with the government to innovate, develop new technologies and ensure the UK seizes these global opportunities.

To deliver the Strategy, the UK Government has committed to working closely with the Scottish Government and other devolved administrations to improve productivity and drive prosperity.
