The Gem Assessment

After a rogue gem meddled with the latest injector batch, all kindergardens have been placed under extreme scrutiny. Every soldier that pops their way out, gets scanned and tested for flaws, strengths, and durability.

However, Orange Diamond prides herself on having the BEST soilders of the empire. Even if she has to bend the rules to do it. Grey does not approve o this but she doesn’t particularly care.

If a gem is strong enough to pass her extensive testing, they will be added to her ranks. Thus a large amount of off colors are kept when they should have been Recycled because while they weren’t exactly how they were supposed to, they were improved.

The last set of gems to emerge from the kindergarden (about a decade later than the others), however, are an entirely different ball park.

So, what would Amko's reaction be to some Ruby shards he thinks were Ruko's? Vice versa for Ruko.

Okay, so to explain before I dive into this, Ruko and Amko's Gems are VERY distinctive.

Wow these look bad zoomed in- but you get the picture.

They literally have chunks of the other ingrained in themselves do to a certain someones handy work on the Kindergarten's injector, so it'd be kind of hard for them to mistake another gem for their brothers.

However, both of these gems are very emotional and not very logical so they would easily make that mistake in a panic driven moment.

RUKO

Ruko would handle it... poorly. They'd be frozen, stunned, because who could possibly take out Amko to the point of shattering?

When he finally snaps out of it, he is in complete denial. Insisting that he's fine, that the corpse he just pocketed wasn't his brother, just some pretty, sharp shards of some regular rock. Yep. That's all it is.

He can break down later if when he finds Amko later.

AMKO

Amko would also freeze, shut down as their trying to figure out any explanation for what they found that isn't "Ruko's gone." They would only snap out of it when someone or something approaches them. Unfortunately, that someone/thing would end up being the target for his turbulent emotions as it's easier to be angry than process.

old hunters DLC also highlights some themes of colonial violence and exploitation too, imo. what’s been done to the fishing village and kos ties the beast thing up with this idea that like, the impulse to Conquer and Dominate another leads directly to the Curse. It’s not enough to understand the old ones and the blood and all that, they needed to control it, to take it for themselves, and exploit it however they can. And now there’s wolfmans everywhere.

And this is in the core gameplay loop itself, we extract all the vials and blood echos and blood gems that we can in order to become strong enough to conquer more and more powerful prey. When we’re hit, we hit back harder and take back the life that was taken for us. Sure it’s ostensibly to Break the Curse and seek Paleblood and all that, but we know why we’re really doing it. Because it’s sick as hell, and feels awesome to best these monsters. The old hunters knew that too, and it turns them into giant horse creatures unable to do anything besides violence. That thirst for violence and power makes hunters turn into beasts, now only functioning as a cog in a perpetual violence machine. They lose their humanity not through repeated death like in Dark Souls, but through taking life. It turns the characters into monsters, and the players into wiki editors and lore theorists (aka monsters) bc we also can’t let go of the feeling Bloodborne gives us.

Tl;dr: Bloodborne is like if Spec Ops had any subtlety or desire to leave itself up to interpretation (probably helped by the fact that very little of what I’m talking about is likely intentional and I’m just insane)

OKAY im back from my appointment and finished my little treat. anon ("anon" @chicknparm who should get credit for these good thoughts) i could not agree more. i mentioned this in a previous post but finding a strand of commentary about the evils of colonialism made me worried i was becoming dangerously online, but it's a relief to see someone else mention this idea. i think you are absolutely right that one of the overt messages in bloodborne is that spilling blood for your own benefit leads to ruin. its actually kind of shocking how, in spite of the combat being the draw to these games, the message of most fromsoft games is a message of anti-violence. like, how many times do we end up fighting something that, in hindsight, needed to be put out of its misery. oh. shit. thinking about it, our player character is explicitly an outsider. the role of hunter of hunter is filled by outsiders...

also lol you are so right about the wiki based insanity but i think that's the consequences of insight poisoning. literally every once in a while while trying to edit this stupid bloodborne doc i think to myself "oooeergg too many eyes" and take a break for a few days

anyway, turning this back around to the colonialism theme, hear us out ok: watching/reading the sekiro lore videos/posts by shetani of shetani's lair helped introduce a lot of esoteric buddhist and shinto concepts that were totally novel and unknown to be as a baka gaijin. now these ideas are impossible not to see in all of from's other works.

i did a few days of research on "shinshi" (mostly a lot of stuff that turned out to not be relevant, but interesting) after becoming aware of them and found they shared a lot of qualities with the augurs (or "phantasms", invertebrates that act as intermediaries to the great ones) of bloodborne. realizing this, i thought about the great ones not in the context of a christian god, as the MODERN yharnam does, but as kami. kami are numerous, everywhere, hidden, and are thought of as actively controlling or influencing the terrestrial world. the re-translation reveals that the "great pthumeru chalice" had some nuance lost in translation: "祀る - Means to enshrine or worship, but has connotations of doing it to appease spirits so they may reach nirvana or Buddhahood and avoid becoming evil"; this is simply translated to "deify" which is technically correct but the original feels like it's much more pointed about finally revealing to the player that the "gods" as we've been lead to believe them to be are not what they seem.

the healing church, a product of georgian to victorian era western beliefs, razed pthumeru, loran, isz, and the fishing village (and probably yahar'gul too) in the quest to become like their newly discovered gods. the framework by which they related to pthumerian culture was completely wrong and misunderstood the nature of "gods" as all knowing or all powerful and, thus, something aspirational. the reality was more that they are just another type of creature in the world with different limitations than a human. and they're still mortal.

Um hi I just want to let you know that reading ldomlt has FULLY wrecked me. Easily one of my top top top favourite yoongi fics now, holy moly. Every chapter thus far has been a gem of its own. I am ruined by this portrayal of yoongi’s character like. Wowee as u might be able to tell..I feel so ko-ed. their chemistry is to die for and I’m living for the last chapter especially. A standout moment for me was the simple “stay”. Wow. Wrecked. Ok anyway before I ramble anymore. Thank you so much for sharing for your art with us. Meditation (Let's Be Gems AU)

This story is based off of @theangrycomet's Let's Be Gems AU. This is fanfiction, and not canon to the Let's Be Gems story. However the Author is free to use any ideas that may be found in these fanfictions I create as "Let's Be Gems" was their idea first.

Summary: Kaio is ordered by Mr. Gar to bond with the Peridot who has now accepted the name of Dendy. She's bonded with all the Gems, including Carol and Mr. Gar, but Kaio needs to learn to work with her if they're going to be a team.

Of all the things Mr. Gar could've given Kaio to do, this was one he was not excited to do.

"Bonding time with Dendy? Really?"

"Radicles can handle the back of the store, today. You are the only one who hasn't worked with her."

Kaio rolled his eyes. "Why do I have to?"

"Because every team will have something unique about them. We don't want a corrupted Gem that only you two can handle and you both not getting along."

Kaio groaned like a surly teenager.

All it took from Mr. Gar was a warning glare and Kaio was heading off to meet up with Dendidot. He walked into her camera room from another side, as though not to disturb the humans. "Hey, Dendy. Mr. Gar says I need to bond with you today."

Dendy turned away from her computers and looked at him.

It was hard to really see her face with all the harsh light behind her and Kaio had to squint a bit.

Not for long though, as she got out of her chair and walked until she was right next to him, looking upwards. Now he could only see half of her face, which he wondered if it was better not seeing her face at all.

TKO really didn't like her, and KO didn't want to get into a fight with his "brother." ... and after TKO finally sharing the memories about what she did to him? KO was on edge around her as well. Even if she did save them from Junior, so did that Sapphire.

What if she took this bonding time as time to take him to the Kindergarten?

He saw her looking up from the corners of her eye, and when he caught eyes with her, she looked away. Most likely she was embarrassed of being caught.

Kaio could feel the contempt from TKO's half and debated letting KO in control, but instead took a deep breath and shook his head.

"I know... this is not your ideal of spending the day out." Dendy finally broke the silence. "I know, how about you tell me something that you would want to do today?"

"Work. I like being back there. And with the other Gems."

"Oh." Dendy frowned. "Well... I usually help Rad with some of the technology he tinkers with... I watch Hue Troopers with Enide... Carol and Mr. Gar are nice to talk to..." She started to mumble, slightly embarrassed as Kaio stayed silent.

He sighed. "Well, what's something you like to do?"

"Uh... are you into working with your hands on old Human technology?"

"Not... really. B-but we can try." He quickly added.

"What about any human shows you enjoy?"

Kaio frowned, trying to think. He wasn't really into that, not like Enide was.

Dendy frowned and tapped her toe a bit. "There's one thing I like doing, but I like doing it alone usually."

Kaio shifted a bit, feeling a pit in his lower torso area. "Where at?"

"The park. Specifically the pond."

Kaio blinked a bit. "That old place? Where they don't even let humans swim or boat out there?"

"It's nice and secluded."

"I never took you as one who liked to watch birds swim."

"Oh no, I watch the fish."

"Kind of hard to do that. The water there isn't that clear, it's all reflective."

"Maybe from your angle." Dendy shrugged. "But I found a great angle to watch the fish."

"You'll have to show me it."

Dendidot smiled up at Kaio and then tried to reach for his hand. She balked, starting to move her hand away and curl her fingers.

Kaio felt a twinge bad, and he gently took her hand, lacing their fingers together.

Dendy blushed at that and smiled up at him. Kaio was taken aback at her response and blushed more out of embarrassment with a frown. He looked away from her, at the ground, and soon felt her slightly tugging at his arm. Kaio frowned and tested the waters of her strength. He dug in his heels and the excited gem in front of him nearly tripped.

She looked over to him, then seemed a bit saddened. "S-sorrey, would you rather walk side by side?" So she was embarrassed, not sad...

"Uh, yeah. You just tell me where we'll need to turn, okay?"

Dendy nodded and walked back to be next to him. The two walked in silence, but it was comfortable. Even if Kaio was wary about the gem walking next to him, she seemed to have no alternate intentions. As they got to the park he could feel her pulling ahead.

A small, confident smile began to form on his face as he let her lead him to where she wanted to go. Twists and turns to avoid humans and going on animal trails where he had to sidestep as her eyes lit up in excitement. It was... kind of adorable.

They had finally gotten to the pond, seeing no one around. Dendy broke away from Kaio and took off her wristbands which held her screen frames. She gently placed them on the ground near the pond and put her feet in. "Will you be joining me?" She asked.

"Isn't there no swimming allowed here?" Kaio asked as his fang started to show.

"I don't swim. I simply walk." Dendy told him bluntly. "But that does not answer my question."

"I probably won't be joining you if you go in the pond."

"Very well." Dendy left Kaio alone, sinking beneath the pond's surface in a matter of seconds.

Alone, with his thoughts. He couldn't even see the Peridot anymore. What was she even doing? Watching the fish? At the bottom of the pond? How did that even work?

He frowned as his hand circled around the Gem on his chest. How would it even react with the water? He slumped. He really should be spending time with Dendy, as per Mr. Gar's orders. With a heavy sigh, he began to walk into the pond as well, kicking up the gravel and causing clouds to burst up, under his feet. He kept walking down to the lowest spot of the pond, where Dendy was watching him. She smiled and patted the spot behind her.

Kaio gladly took it. This was spending time with her, right? He began to relax a bit as the water moved around them, never growing quite still. He felt some pressure against his back, and when he took a glance, there was Dendy, right against him and looking upwards. Confused, the gem did the same and gasped, letting a bubble out of his mouth that had the atmospheric air. Where the bubble was soaring up, some fish scattered.

From where the gems were sitting it looked as if the world had gotten a green-blue filter, with flying fish in the sky. No wonder Dendy liked it here. She had been the one who would go into the ocean to avoid being spotted by Kaio. He supposed she really did like the fish. Or maybe the fantastical elements Earth felt like it could have.

He felt Dendy shift against his back, and he smiled slightly, still looking up.

Sneak Peak/updates for a Ok KO Let’s be Gem’s project I’m working on

I have the first 6 pages completed

I know where I want this particular story to go

I’m just struggling with panel arrangements for the 7th and 8th pages. Plus I made it extra difficult for myself by doing it in a lineless art style.

HOWEVER I am currently more inspired to work on other projects, and it has been months since I have worked on this one.

So, what I I can do is. post the first 6 pages as their own part, and later post the next set of pages- the way the pages are set up it works- when I’m inspired to work on them again.

It might be a while till you guys see pages 7-13, but you guys can at least get the beginning.

How do Amko and Ruko know that they should fuse when rejuvinated when Ruby and Sapphire did not?

They didn't- Amko and Ruko will always be more prone to fusing with one another due to how they were made.

They literally have chunks of the each other's gems in their own. - it's part of why they are so messed up in comparison to typical Amethysts or Rubies, both physically and psychologically.

Amko has a Ruby's temper and protectiveness for his "assignment" (ie Ruko) whereas Ruko has an Amethyst's friendliness and positive attitude. Etc.

When they first fused, it was Amko trying to protect Ruko from the Diamond court.

When they fused the second time post-rejuvenation, it was Ruko trying to comfort Amko as the off-color amethyst was beginning to get into a panic attack.

Kaio had always been friendly with people unless they had done him wrong. He was like a big puppy. Especially now with all his memories gone and surrounded by friendly faces. It was only a matter of time before he caught her off guard and tried speaking to her.

"Hi! I've seen you around a lot!" He greeted the green gem. She barely was up to his hips in height, but was usually seen directing some Quartzes around.

"Oh. Uh. Hello." She seemed rather awkward. Curt, but polite.

"My name's Kaio!"

"Er... Dendy. Or Dendydot as some call me."

"Hi, nice to meet you!"

"Yes... nice to meet you as well."

"You know, when I've seen you, you're usually with Sterling Silver or commanding the quartzes."

"Yes, Sterling Silver is my friend, and commanding the quartzes is a part of my job."

"A part?"

"Ye... I.. I'm sorrey it is just... It is a lot to talk about. I usually tell Sterling Silver about my worries."

"You tell your friends your worries?"

"Yes...?"

"Well, I want to be your friend! Why don't you tell me?"

"I... hah. You remind me of someone I've lost contact with."

"Really? Who?"

"He was... my friend." Dendydot explained.

"Was he just called 'friend?'" He knew that Gems didn't have to go by their gem on this planet. Only a few went by chosen names, just like Dendy and himself.

"He was called..." Dendy looked back to Kaio, who was sitting closer with his chin propped up on his fists. His eyes crinkled and made his markings scrunch up. "I called him 'Butterfly.'"

"Really?"

"Yeah. After the marks on him. They were... they were a lot like yours."

"My marks are butterfly?"

"Well, butterfly marks usually are across the nose and cheeks. At least... according to humans."

"What was your friend like?"

"Very friendly, sweet, energetic. A lot like you, but his hair was... kept in place and all dark. He... his gem was the same cut as your ruby, but on one side instead of one corner."

"Wow. Do you think maybe I could meet him?"

"... The first problem is getting back in contact with him..."

"And I didn't know I was given the nickname 'Butterfly.' When were you going to call me that?" Kaio smiled as his partner deescalated into giggles as he held her. Stars they were both so relieved.
