Whumpcember Day 8- Isolation (Mass Effect 3, Shepard & Vega)
@whumpcember
Takes place between ME2 & ME3
--
Rose Shepard sat by the window that her room had and stared out it. Normally she didn't mind being indoors but she hadn't been outside since she was transported to Alliance headquarters in Vancouver.
"Three months and twenty-nine days ago." she thought sullenly, letting her head drop onto the small table with an audible thud.
"I've been in space longer than this, why is being here so much harder?" she said out loud, her voice muffled by the cheap wood.
A glance at the clock on the wall (because she was not allowed to have an omni-tool that connected to the extranet) told her that it was only one in the afternoon and she didn't have any meetings with Alliance brass scheduled today.
Or at least she didn't think so because normally James Vega told her the day's agenda when he brought in her breakfast, and he hadn't said a peep about anything this morning.
Feeling the urge to move, but knowing they wouldn't let her in the gym while everyone else had the opportunity to use it, Rose decided to do a modified exercise routine. Standing, she changed into the workout gear she'd been supplied with when she first arrived, and after clearing a big enough space started to do some stretching.
As she leaned towards her right leg, Rose realized she didn't know much about James Vega. Since she couldn't access the Alliance database, where he'd been and what he'd been doing before being placed on her guard duty was a mystery.
"And he's not very forth coming about it either." She thought while finishing up the leg stretches and moved to start push-ups.
"But he still calls me 'Commander' so at least he isn't holding what I did to the Batarian relay against me. And when we were first introduced, he looked like he was meeting a celebrity so he at least knows about Elysium."
Finishing up with with her third set of push-ups, she lay on the floor for a minute to rest before rolling onto her back and starting torso twists. It was different without any weights, but Rose figured out how to modify it.
"From what I've seen, he's been in the Alliance for awhile. So why would someone like him get assigned to simple guard duty?"
Rose felt the sweat she was building up start to make her shirt stick and was even feeling a bit better so she finished up the last set of torso twists and stood, stretching as she did. Cooling down with some yoga moves, Rose made the decision to ask James about his previous service when he showed up the next morning to wake her up.
Only he didn't.
Suddenly he was gone and his replacement, one of her original guards had no idea where or even why.
The routine of casual conversation was suddenly gone and Rose was thrown for a loop, the one thing that had kept her connected to the outside severed. After four days had passed with Vega still gone, Rose realized how much she'd come to rely on that to keep her somewhat sane.
--
James Vega walked into the Alliance Complex feeling the weight of what he'd done a Fhel Prime than when it'd first happened. Some of the Admirals had needed another inquiry as to what had gone on so for the past week he'd been in London, rehashing it six ways to Sunday. That plus the medal ceremony for his "brave actions" after the second inquiry had only made the nightmares worse.
But now he was back in Vancouver, with the salt in the air and the sea breeze ruffling through his hair, so hopefully he could get at least one full night of sleep.
The next day he arrived to deliver the Commander's breakfast and when he opened the door, was surprised to see the room still dark. He'd known the Commander as an early riser, more out of habit after nearly twenty years in the Alliance than anything, so the fact that the curtains were still drawn to block out the sun was...odd.
"Commander, you awake?" he asked in as soft of a voice as he could manage while setting the tray on the table by the window and opened the curtains, letting the sun light spill in.
Rose groaned at the sudden change in light and buried her face in her pillow, "Go away."
"And miss you seeing this thrilling breakfast of," James paused, raising the cloche that covered the plate. "oatmeal, toast, bacon, and protein powder. Gotta love the biotic-friendly diet huh."
"That can fuck off." Rose said into her pillow. But then she felt guilty for snapping at James when her being restricted to her room wasn't his fault. Sighing, she sat up and ran a hand through her hair-grimacing slightly at how oily it had gotten. "Sorry, I'll be sure to enjoy it. Thanks."
James raised an eyebrow at the disheveled appearance, a stark contrast to the semi-put together Commander he'd gotten to know. "I'll leave you to it then Commander."
"You know you're not supposed to call me that any more."
James shrugged, "I won't tell if you don't."
Rose felt a ghost of a smile start to appear on her lips, realizing with a surprise that she had no idea when the last time that had happened.
Stepping out of the room, James frowned-not liking what he had seen in Shepard's quarters. "Hey Keith, what's up with the Co-Shepard? She seems...different."
Keith straightened up in the chair he was sitting in and shrugged, "She's been like that the last week and a half. Probably because of the new restrictions."
"What new restrictions?"
"You didn't get the email? Shepard can't leave her quarters whenever she wants, it has to go through the Admirals if it's not Medical or Inquiry related."
James let out a curse underneath his breath. "That'd do it." he thought while thanking Keith and making his way to back to the cafeteria to grab his own breakfast. As he ate, his own mind was coming up with a proposal.
--
"Where are we going?" Rose asked while looking at James from across the room.
"Just trust me. Put on the civvies and then I'll tell you more."
Rose gave James a look but did as she was told, ducking into the bathroom to throw on the Blast-O tshirt and jeans. Walking out, she saw that he had a baseball cap in his hands and caught it when he tossed it to her.
"Follow me." James said, turning towards the door and walking out, casting a glance behind him to see Rose hesitantly follow.
As she stepped out of the room, she paused just on the other side, raising an eyebrow at the four other guards that had appeared. "What's going on?" she asked, looking at James when one of them approached her with biotic damping cuffs and attached them to her wrists.
"Sorry about those, Anderson made them a requirement." James apologized. "And we can only spare an hour so I hope that's enough."
Rose followed James silently as they moved down the hallway, towards a side entrance. Heart catching as James paused and so did she and her entourage, she didn't want to get her hopes up.
"Make sure the hat's on good. Anderson doesn't want to deal with press asking why you were let out."
Nodding her head, Rose slipped on the baseball hat and adjusted it so that it wouldn't fall off if the wind picked up. Holding her breath, she cautiously stepped over the doorway and onto the concrete. Blinking as her eyes adjusted to the sunlight, she felt a thrill in her chest as they walked away from the door and into the green space.
Growing up on spaceships and stations, Rose had always enjoyed it the most when she got to go planet-side and just experience weather. Closing her eyes once they reached the middle of the grassy area, she closed her eyes and tipped her face up towards the sun-soaking the warmth in and just reveling in the fact that she was outside for the first time in months.
"Sure it's with an armed escort, but I can just ignore them." she thought, opening her eyes again and turning in a slow circle to take it all in.
"Thanks, Vega." Rose said in a voice barely loud enough to be heard over the usual city noise. "This has...helped a lot."
"Glad to help Commander."

This scenario is what happens if Magolor is somehow diverted in his escape when an entrance to a fallen Heaven has opened up in the deeper depths of Another Dimension. Joined up by a dimension-traveling Bubi who seeks to find a helpful magician who might aid him in freeing Satanael, Magolor ventures into Heaven and follows his orders.

In this adventure, Magolor & Bubi will encounter the Seraph of Aeons - ELYSIUM, who despite being sealed away for thousands of years, has been summoned to judge Magolor for his misdeeds. (Seems pretty fishy, though.) The music video details ELYSIUM's theme song, "TRISAGION ~ Seraph omnis iudicii".

Becoming Commander Shepard please!! 🙏
WIP Title Game
Oh, I'm so excited for this one! This is Natasha's prequel fic! I don't have much of it written yet, but I do have some post-proposal euphoria with Nat & Arthur 👀 (yes, this will eventually be smut) 🙈🌶
Natasha followed behind Arthur, her hand clasped in his as he led the way down the hall toward the room he’d rented for his stay. Elysium’s tourism demanded a bountiful supply of short-term rentals, but Arthur had barely managed to snag this one thanks to the holiday. A playful giggle escaped her as they suddenly stopped in front of a door and he brought his omni-tool up. It chimed in unison with the door as the security key unlocked it, allowing the door to swiftly open. Arthur stepped inside first, and she followed closely behind. Her heart thundered in her chest and she felt a wave of relief wash over her as they’d finally reached the privacy they’d been seeking. The grip on her hand disappeared as Arthur walked away from her. She watched curiously as he crossed the room and she smiled as she saw the small bucket resting on the dresser. It was full of ice, and a bottle of champagne stuck out from its center. “I believe it’s time for us to celebrate,” Arthur declared heartily as he pulled the bottle out of the bucket, sending several ice cubes falling to the floor. Natasha agreed and watched as he made quick work of the foil covering the top of the bottle. She was mesmerized by the movements of his hands as he grabbed the towel beside the bucket, twisted the bottle, and separated it from the cork. He grabbed one flute at a time and filled it with the bubbling drink before placing the bottle back in the ice bucket and offering a glass to Natasha. “I’m honestly still a little shocked, Arthur. I mean, of course it was inevitable, but a New Years Eve proposal?” she asked as she accepted his offering. “Here’s to us, my love,” he said as he raised the glass in a toast. “To us,” Natasha echoed, gently tapping her glass against his. They both took sips of the drink. She glanced down at her hand, the dim lighting of the room reflecting off the tiny diamonds that wrapped around her finger. Arthur drained his own flute quickly and placed it back beside the bucket on the dresser before turning toward Natasha. His eyes moved over her frame as he stepped closer to her, watching carefully as she took a timid sip of the champagne. “Had to make it memorable,” he responded with a sly smile. He reached for her glass and sat it beside his own. She smiled back at him as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her body close to his, pressing his lips to hers. He kissed her slowly, passionately. “I’d expect nothing less,” she chuckled softly against his lips. She felt him smile before he pulled away to look into her eyes as his hands gently cradled against her cheeks, holding her face in his hands. “Glad to know I didn’t disappoint.”

WIP Wednesday
thank you for tagging me @korblez I can’t tell you how long this post-Archangel mission scene has been living in my brain rent free. Scene word count: 884
~~ “Don’t give me that bullshit Cassandra! You always have a choice!” Jason raised his voice even louder at her. Before anyone could move to intervene, Cassandra moved her hand to erect a barrier around and between her and her brother.
“If you want we can go and drop you off on the citadel after I recruit the salarian scientist but don’t you dare sit there and judge me when you are the one who has been playing dead for the last decade and a half; you have no idea what I’ve been through because I thought you were dead.”
Elysium. Akuze. Hell, everything that had happened since she enlisted was because she thought he died with their parents. What was everything supposed to mean if not that she should live out their dream for him?
"Commander Shepard," Another soldier's voice brought the former commander out of her thoughts, away from the ghost in front of her. She looked over her brother's shoulder to the Alliance personnel behind him. Did he set her up? The Alliance was supposed to know she was working for the council right now. This was definitely not what she needed right now. She lowered the Barrier around her brother to strengthen the one between herself and him. Regardless of what they said, she wasn't going to go with them quietly.  Not with the entire Galaxy counting on her to stop the Collectors. "The Alliance-"
"Lost its authority over Shepard when they put her name forward for the Spectres. Your Committee was made aware of this," Nihlus interrupted the soldier, placing a firm hand on the former commander's shoulder from behind. Cassandra kept silent, clenching her hands into fists.
Once again, Nihlus had to save her, it was just another time and place.
Still, she would be lying if she said she wasn’t grateful for Nihlus’ intervention, even if it was a little unexpected. She doubted that the Alliance was just going to let her go with him however. So long as she didn't actively fight either of there was nothing either of them could say against her that would hold up, or at least that was the hope. She had already cost Alliance lives doing her duty as a Spectre to save the council. She doubted she would be granted as much understanding to save her own skin however.
“Stay calm and play along. Power down your biotics; I won’t let them take you.”   Nihlus’ voice played through a transceiver piece in her ear. She looked at the turian standing behind her as he glared at the Alliance soldiers in front of them. She sincerely hoped that they couldn't hear it from the few feet in front of her that they were.
Her heart leapt into her throat and her shoulders slumped. Time seemed to start to slow down around her again as she struggled to calm down enough to hide her biotics.
Damn it.
“Cassandra Shepard.” Nihlus’ hand firmly gripped her wrist and moved it behind her. The familiar sound of a set of omni-cuffs stood out to her ear as he grabbed her other wrist. She pulled her arm back to pretend to resist him, only to realize her wrists were already locked together. “By Spectre Authority I’m taking you back to the Citadel for your connection to Cerberus. Your spectre status has been revoked. Your biotics won’t work against these.”
Cassandra continued to pretend to struggle against his grip, feigning a glare at the turian. She muttered a few curses under her breath at the Alliance soldiers, glaring daggers at her brother. The humans looked at one another before silently walking away from the former commander, but had they really bought the act? “I apologize if I hurt you, I needed [the Alliance] to believe I wasn’t going easy on you.” Nihlus undid the omni-cuffs once the soldiers had gotten far enough away that it was clear they werent coming back. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, a little roughed up but-”
“Not what I was asking, Shepard.”
“I appreciate the concern, but you really don’t need to worry about me.”
“I find that hard to believe considering everything that’s happened.”
“Shit happens. My ability to adapt part of why you thought I deserved to join the Spectres.”
“Show me another Spectre that’s been through what you have, Shepard.” Nihlus had hesitated before he spoke. “You can’t keep bottling it up like this, especially- eventually it’s going to catch up to you and boil over, what then?”
Cassandra could tell that he was going to bring up what Project Lazarus had done to her biotics before he caught himself. Another thing she didn't need to be reminded of.
“You seemed prepared for if they showed up to cause trouble.” She quickly tried to change the subject
"The Alliance has reportedly been causing trouble for the Council since First Contact.” He continued. “It was anticipated that they'd have trouble cooperating if one of their soldiers ever became a Spectre and then went rogue."
"I guess that's at least part of the reason the Council sent you with me." Cassandra was almost certain that at least another part of the reason was because the Council didn't completely trust her, which she really couldn't blame them for considering her circumstances.

Guess who's back with new and improved oc lore
I finally have new ideas so without further ado:
Story is now gonna take place on a whole another dimension on a planet called Elysium that is similar to earth, just bigger and better. So what happened to earth? I'll get to that on a separate post, but in a short, people successfully found a way to travel between dimensions, and moved there and now its ruled by people who go by Chaela, Arnold and Leon.
They also own a company called Omniversal labs which are the ones responsible for interdimensional travel. Things went well until mysterious creatures called anomalies (for now), started causing havoc and now Omniversal labs are making tools and gadgets for people to defend themselves against them. The story goes that a mysterious group has been using the dimensions thing to exploit creatures to cause havoc. At least that's what their saying.
Some of the more humaniod anomalies have been taken in and now work for Omni labs. They say they were apart of that mystery group and have been converted yet they seem to hold no memory of such. But it's probably nothing, right?
That's all I got so far, will post more

meet cute pt 4
Only a week or two *cough* late.  lol the final part of Meet Cute, in honor of MELE!
All Aboard the Normandy SR1
Pt. 1 Anderson
Pt. 2. Joker
Pt. 3. Chakwas
Part Four: Kaidan Alenko
Kaidan isn’t aboard his new ship long enough to find his locker before the doctor has him under her scanner.
He’s used to it.  Most of the medical branch falls into three categories for him, either they think he’s some sort of monster they want to dissect in their labs or they think he needs coddling.  He prefers the ones like this one.
“I just want a baseline, Lieutenant.  To run comparisons in case of injuries or later concerns.”
She never even mentions the implant, other than a slight tsk over the scarring just visible under his hairline.  He’s pretty sure it’s just professional disdain for his surgeon’s workmanlike handiwork, though.
Their omnis ping at the same time and Chakwas shakes her head.  “Our presence is requested, Lieutenant.  I suppose we’ll have time to stow all this away once we’re off.”
“Have you served with Captain Anderson before, ma’am?” He holds the door for her to enter the lift, first.
Chakwas has a warm smile, it probably serves her well in her bedside manner. “Yes, several times and with Engineer Adams and Nav Officer Pressly.  Anderson has a certain style of command and he’s found himself a crew that suits it.  He’s earned the right, I would think.”
He has to ask, “And what about the XO?”
“Shepard?  No, never served with her, though she has popped up in our wake a few times.  Have you?”
“No. She was stationed on the Tokyo but she transferred off right before I came aboard.”  He had, in fact, peeled her nametape off the locker he’d been assigned.  And maybe he’d listened to the stories the crew had told about her.  Hard not to listen to stories.
The one they told the most was how she’d just vanished -no goodbyes- at a fueling station on the edge of the Terminus system after a month of almost being part of the crew.  Pretty standard for N7’s, the captain had assured them.  Orders from HQ and a freighter headed the right direction.
Kaidan holds the door for Dr. Chakwas and follows her out of the lift when they arrive at the CIC, Joker still running his checklists as they exit.  Guess he gets to miss the handshaking.
The rest of the Normandy’s command is waiting at the base of the gangway. Kaidan’s been to one or two of these launches, but this time there’s no band or families waving them off.
A few official looking people- humans and turians, mostly- are scattered to the edge of the dock.  Pressly, who he’d met earlier, holding the scanner and checking the credentials of the steady stream of boarding crew.  Captain Anderson, familiar from vids, towers over most of the humans and a couple of the turians.
There’s someone at Anderson’s elbow, in crisp BDU’s.  He can only see her straight back and the curve of her shaved head. The XO, if he has to hazard a guess. Hero of the Blitz, N7, all of the legends in one uniform.
Though...hunh.
He thought Shepard was taller.
Maybe this is a yeoman?
The woman turns her head slightly and the scar curving under her right eye -familiar from the vids and even a recruiting poster or two- stands out.
He remembers Nera telling him once that she’d shared a cup of coffee with Shepard, not long after Elysium.  On a night watch when Nera was still getting used to it on a ship full of Marines headed back to Arcturus.  “She laughs pretty easy for a hero,” Nera had told him.  “I guess I expected her to be...colder.”
Kaidan snaps out of his musing into a salute as Anderson’s head turns in his direction. “Lieutenant Alenko!”
“Sir!”
“Glad to have you with us, Kaidan.  I know Captain Helcik was pushing it to get you turned around to us.” Anderson reaches out a large, broad hand.
Kaidan grasps it, gets firm shake and only the slightest hesitation at the buzz of his field.  “I’m glad to have made it, Captain.”
“This is Commander Aedan Shepard, our XO.”
“Commander.”
“Lieutenant.”  He has to blink at the direct onslaught of a frank, appraising stare from a pair of neatly lined steel grey eyes.  A faint smile, not particularly friendly.  But she offers her hand.
And doesn’t flinch at the slight pop of static between them, when he takes it.  Her palm is cool and rough against his, for just a moment.
He drags his attention back to the captain as Anderson continues, “You come from a good ship.  I commanded the Tokyo before Helcik.  She recommends you with...some pretty high praise.”
“I appreciate hearing that, sir.  I hope to do as well here.”
“Well, your record and your commendations spoke well of you.  And your abilities are…”
He’s trying not to be distracted by Shepard’s continued, cool eyed assessment but he isn’t sure that distracting him isn’t the point, just to see if she can.
Anderson seems to have a pretty friendly style of command.
Maybe Shepard is the steel in all that velvet.
She catches him glancing at her while Anderson is still talking and lifts one, slanting red eyebrow in a question.  Or a challenge.  He cuts his eyes back to the captain, but he’d swear there was a trace of a satisfied smirk at the corner of her mouth.
And then her eyes shift and targetlock on something...someone else and he realizes that he only thought she’d been looking at him coldly.  She shifts...her shoulders, her chin?  He isn’t sure.  But Kaidan has to physically stop himself from throwing up a barrier in reaction.
He follows her gaze and the sight makes him square up, instinctively.
“Captain Anderson? We have a...guest.” Her low voice is respectful but laced with warning and it says something about how the captain thinks of her, how fast he reacts. Anderson immediately turns toward the armed turian approaching them in red and black armor, the pale markings stark on his dark skin as the crowd parts, whispering.
Under his breath, Anderson murmurs, “Stand down, Shepard. He’s expected.” Louder, he calls out, “Nihlus!  Glad you could make it.”
Shepard grunts an acknowledgment and her expression shifts from guarded to interested.  Still, when Anderson advances she’s in lock step at his left flank.  Kaidan -almost on reflex- moves to the opposite elbow and matches her step.
Despite the captain’s order to relax, there’s an energy about her.  An intensity.
Kaidan isn’t sure why- but it’s catching.
The turian scans them with bright green eyes and then nods.  “Captain Anderson.”  There’s a warm vibrato to his voice.  His attention goes immediately to Shepard, dismissing Kaidan entirely.
Well.  That’s new.  Usually, aliens lock on a biotic human as an oddity.
Shepard, for her part, is returning the regard, hands behind her back in a deceptively at ease posture.  She isn’t armed.  At least, he can’t see anything.  Not the way this Nihlus practically bristles with weaponry.
Anderson introduces Shepard and then Kaidan to “Council SPECTRE, Nihlus Kryik.  He’ll be coming with us on the shakedown.”
That’s all he says.  Kaidan turns to Shepard as the captain introduces the SPECTRE to a minister who’s come to see them off.
He catches just the hint of blank shock before her face clears but she meets his look.  And lifts her eyebrows in a clear question.
Kaidan shakes his head. Yeah, he has no idea why a Council SPECTRE would be cruising with them. She scowls and tips her head and they fall back into place at Anderson’s back.
Nihlus dismisses the minister with fairly diplomatic speed and turns back to Shepard.  “I would like a tour of the ship, if you don’t mind, Commander.”
“Of course, SPECTRE Kryik.”
“Just Nihlus.  The SPECTRES don’t stand on all of the formality of the Hierarchy or the Systems Alliance.”
“As you like.”  Kaidan has to be imagining the way Anderson glares at Shepard from beside Nihlus.  But she follows it up after a short hesitation with a crisp, “Please, just call me Shepard.”
“Family names are last for humans, as I recall.  So many similarities in our cultures.”
“On some levels.”
The turians mandibles shift before he adds, “But I understand you don’t know your family.”  Okay, seriously, what the hell is up with this guy?
The smile she flashes is bright and cheerful and doesn’t get anywhere near her eyes.  “No, I do not.  I would love to start that tour, anytime you’re ready.  If you don’t need us, sir.”  There’s an emphasis on that last word that Kaidan thinks is important.  And Anderson clears his throat like she’d said something rude.
“Hm. Yes.  Go on.  We’ll want you on the bridge for launch, Shepard.”
“Yes, sir.”  There it is again.  Anderson just shakes his head as she courteously waves Nihlus in front of her.
“Lieutenant, you can be my second for the rest of the festivities.”
“Of course, sir.”  Anderson sighs and goes back to chatting with the dignitaries and Kaidan takes the chance to glance back at Shepard who is gazing out briefly over their heads from the top of the gangway as Nihlus navigates the door.  Her eyes out on the stars beyond the dock’s shimmer of shielding. For just a second, the smile is real and eager.  She leans up on her toes, towards the open sky.  And then she shuts it all down and, blank faced,  follows the SPECTRE back into the ship, her fingers trailing along in a caress of the gleaming hull, the last thing Kaidan sees.

History of Magolor - all the Magolor stuff I've made in Inkscape so far There's context to what I made some Magolors for:
Original Magolor was made for X72-OVERCLOCKED's music video
Manager Magolor's assets were made for Discord banner art contest themed after Merry Magoland
Interdimensional Magolor was made for TRISAGION ~ Seraph omnis iudicii's music video and also for some concepts of the ELYSIUM boss battle
Shopkeeper Magolor was essentially an extra I made to complement the other Magolors I've made
Traitor Magolor is the latest one I made, and the Master Crown was tricky to make in such program. This was for an art competition Splatfest-type thing in another Kirby server I'm in.
The only ones new to this artwork are vectors of Kirby using Ultra Sword, as well as another Kirby using the Magolor Dress-Up Mask. I think it'd be neat to add for the sake of completeness.

Kiss asks: #29 a kiss on the inside of the wrist. for pairing of your choice
Thank you so much for this prompt! It definitely took me surprise where it went. But damn these two are adorable! Also, I apologize for the horrid grammar, bilingual problems.

                                                         Enraptured
His omni-tool beeped, stirring him out of a deep sleep. Rubbing his eyes, he checked the time quickly. It was 3:00 am. Two more hours before Kaidan had to get up for work.
Kaidan. Axel felt him stir in bed next to him. He ghosted a kiss on Kaidan's shoulder just before he rolled out of bed and stood up. He quietly padded his way into the office adjacent to their master bedroom.
Groggily he answered the call, while trying to rub the sleep out of his eyes.
"Hello?"
"Commander. You're a hard man to reach.”
Although his vision was still blurry from sleep he easily recognized the familiar face on the video call.
"For reasons, Bailey. What can I do for you?"
"Sorry to disturbed you this early in the morning. I do realize what time it is on Earth. But your name was listed as emergency contact-"
"Emergency contact for who?" Skepticism filled his tone. The only person he knew to have him listed as an emergency contact was Kaidan. He looked back behind him into the master bedroom to make sure he hadn't dreamt that Kaidan laid there next to him just seconds ago. Not even his mother had put him down as contact after he came back from the dead. Whether it was intentional or she merely forgot, he would never know. Since Kaidan slept in the room just across from him, he didn't understand who else would have put his name on the list. His father had long retired…
"Your daughter"
"My wh-?" If he hadn't been awake before, he sure fucking was now.
"We obtained birth records, blood type information, medical history… your name is listed on the birthday certificate as the father. Your name was provided as emergency contact by a Melanie? No last name indicated. This was…" Bailey looked up from the paperwork he had been reading from "given to us a couple days after the reapers were at our front door. Transportation will be arranged for her. Information will be sent in a few hours. I'll be in touch." Bailey ended the transmission and Axel stood dumbfounded.
"I want to adopt her." Axel turned around to see Kaidan standing at the door, rubbing his eyes, his sweatpants haphazardly put on showing the deep V going down his sweats. The bulge down below is just a little distracting for Axel that he had to force his eyes up to meet Kaidan's.

He knew his jaw was hanging open slightly. He briefly wondered exactly how in shock he most looked. Or was it confusion? Fear?. He couldn't tell himself if he were to be honest with himself. He’d figured that ship had sailed, but he’d been wrong. So many questions ran simultaneously in his mind and he couldn't seem to turn off the off switch this time.
But one question spoke the loudest to him; why didn’t she tell me?
“Come back to bed?" Kaidan offered a hand out and Axel accepted it, gratefully allowing himself to be guided back to their bedroom. He was truly in need of this comfort right now and Kaidan was graciously given it out to him. One of the reasons he loved the man so much, he always seemed to know what to do whenever Axel needed him the most.
Crawling back to bed, he pulled up the sheets on top of them both and wrapped his arm around Kaidan's waist. Kaidan turned to face him, intertwining his fingers with Axel's hand that laid between them, though said nothing. He didn't have to. Axel could read his eyes, and they spoke to him at a level that even words could not express. I'm here, and I'll be here when you're ready to talk. He didn't have to hear Kaidan speak to words aloud, because their connection ran deeper than just their love for one another. They understood each other in a way others couldn’t.
He kissed Kaidan on the forehead before closing his eyes and pretending to go back to sleep and he waited for the familiar steady breathing he knew meant his partner was in a deep sleep before pulling away and got dressed to head downstairs.
~~~~~~~
The alarm clock blared and Kaidan turned to the otherside to turn it off. Facing back the way he came, he noticed the spot next to him where Axel usually laid was empty. He had grown accustomed to waking up and finding himself alone in bed. His husband had always been an early riser and that hadn’t changed since they defeated the reapers.
Sliding to the edge of the bed, he swung his legs to the side, sitting up and stretched his arms high above him while yawning all at the same time. Quickly he activated his omni-tool to send off a message to his colleagues he wouldn’t be in the office and sent along the lesson plan for the day before grabbing his t-shirt from the foot of the bed and shrugging it on.
Arriving into the kitchen, he found Axel hunched over a datapad, head resting in his hands and coffee mug in front him. But something struck out more than usual… his husband was dressed which was an unusual sight to see. Kaidan had always found it amusing and slightly distracting that his husband always seemed to like to strut around the house nude. Kaidan never complained about it, though. He poured himself a mug and topped off Axel’s before wrapping his arms around Axel’s shoulders and kissed him on the temple.
“Sorry. I didn’t-”
“It’s fine. What are you reading?” Kaidan, curious, asked him.
“Alexandra Ashley Meagan Hawkings. Prefers to go by Ashley.” He inhaled deeply, letting himself sink against his husband. He distinctively noticed Kaidan’s biotic energy was much calmer than his right now and he tried to focus on that. He knew his energy was a hurricane next to Kaidan’s stillness of calm waters.
“We could change it for her. Make Ashley her first name.”
“I keep doing the math over and over again inside my head. Based on her birthday. Everytime I do, It keeps bringing me back to that night on Elysium.” Axel sighed, bringing down his arms to table and taking a tentative sip from his coffee.
“Melanie?”
“You heard that huh? My ex-fiancée.” Axel intertwined his fingers with Kaidan’s before continuing. “We were...hmm… two years together by then? Things were really good between us. We were both on leave on Elysium and I decided to finally pop the question. But then after Elysium, we were on medical leave for a while. She sustained a few injuries while leading a group to safety while I covered the rear. I got shot in the shoulder, and the leg, nothing major but enough to have to be off for a bit.  I received my N7 commendation. It’s what I had always wanted.” Axel exhaled loudly as he remembered the events that took place that evening.
He continued. “Kaidan you should have seen the fear in her eyes. I swear, it’s like she was seeing a monster instead of me. I went out that night to have some drinks with some buddies of mine, when I got back to the apartment… she was just gone. No message, nothing. A few days later-”
“I moved in.” Kaidan finished his sentence for him.
“Yeah.” Axel trailed his fingertips of his free hand on Kaidan’s arm absentmindedly.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know.” Kaidan tightened his hold on Axel and rubbed one hand against his bicep to comfort him.
“I know.”
“Explains an awful lot, though.” Kaidan’s breathy laugh tickled Axel’s ear.
“Sorry. I was pretty moody. I tend to...er...rebound after break ups too. Though normally I was the dumper not the dumpee…. Hmm... Derrick was a real piece of ass.”  Axel glanced at Kaidan as he remembered one partner he brought back to the apartment to see his reaction only to find his husband in shock. He tried to bite his lips, but failed miserably and the corner of his lips twitched.
It took a moment for Kaidan to realize what Axel meant and when the realization hit him, they both burst into laughing.
“He did have a nice ass.” Kaidan admitted.
Axel inhaled deeply before exhaling just as sharply. “I guess I’ll drive you to work this morning so I can go pick her up at the spaceport.”
Kaidan could feel the nervousness coming from Axel, his biotic energy felt more like a hurricane mirroring his internal emotions rather than the usual stillness of calm waters Kaidan grew to know so well. Kaidan let go of Axel and sat on the seat next to him, “no need. I really told them I won’t be in today. I figured I should be there as well to pick up our daughter.” He took his mug in both hands raising it to his lips but kept his gaze on Axel to watch for his reaction.
“Shit. I’m still wrapping my head around the fact I have a daughter and you’re already saying ‘ours’” Axel rubbed his hands over his face.
Kaidan glided the datapad close to him and opened a new tab on the extranet.
“What if she hates me? I missed her birth. Hell, I missed nine birthdays, Kaidan. Nine. And I didn’t even have a fucking choice in the matter.” Axel voice raised a couple octaves and he stood up abruptly stabbing a finger against his chest. Kaidan didn’t need to look at him to know his corona was flaring, the crackling electricity of the air as he manipulated the dark energy that surrounded them was indication enough.
“There’ll be an adjustment period. But I don’t think she’ll hate you.” Kaidan kept his eyes focused on the datapad. His voice was steady and calm as always.
“That’s a huge assumption.” Axel’s tone was a little more accusatory than he would have liked.
“Gut instinct tells me she didn’t have a choice either and might be looking forward to meeting you.”
"You know... that means I can't be naked around the house anymore." Axel said matter of factly in a more calmer tone.
"Moot point. I was wondering why you were dressed for once."
“Better start getting used to it. What are you searching for anyway?” Curiosity picked, and Axel leaned over to looks as he picked up his coffee once again to drink.
“Adoption papers. They take awhile to go through. Figured I’d get a head start on it.” Kaidan remained hyper focused on the task at hand.
“You really meant it did you? Our daughter.”  Axel put down his mug and it was his turn to wrap his arms around Kaidan’s shoulders.
"Yeah. Our daughter." Kaidan was hung up on that word.
"Huh. I guess so… ours." Axel kissed Kaidan’s temple before exhaling slowly and laying his chin on his husband’s shoulder.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Axel paced along the aisle of chairs in the waiting room, wringing his fingers together.
“Are all vanguards so antsy?” Kaidan chuckled as he leaned back into his chair.
Axel paused into his steps to turn a scowl in Kaidan’s direction. “You don’t survive CQC as a Vanguard if you don’t move.” He said a little snippy.
“Fair point. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Why don’t you sit down before you pave a hole on the floor?” Kaidan patted the seat next to him.
Sighing, Axel sat next to him, but it did nothing to calm his nerves, rather his left leg was restless and moved involuntarily.
Kaidan placed a hand on Axel’s knee and squeezed. “Breathe. It’s going to be… it’s going to be what it is.”
“Why do you always have to say that?”
Kaidan chuckled, but otherwise remained silent.
Restless, Axel stood up and immediately began to pace again. The butterflies in his stomach wouldn’t seize and he was sure his breakfast would come up if he didn’t keep his mind occupied with counting steps. One, two, three, four...eight rinse and repeat. Eight seats in a row, plenty of room for cover if need be.
“Dad!”
A voice broke him out of his thoughts and he sharply turned to the direction he heard it come from.
Two things immediately stood out: the first was Kaidan was immediately at this side and reached for his left hand, second was a little girl with sharp bluish-hazel eyes framed with freckles ran in his direction.
Kaidan pressed his wrists against his, he knew this was for comfort as much as it was a check in for his pulse. Once a medic, always a medic.
Kaidan pressed his wrists against his, he knew this was for comfort as much as it was a check in for his pulse. Once a medic, always a medic.
“See. I told you it would be fine.” Kaidan lowered his voice so only Axel could hear him.
Surprisingly strong arms wrap around Axel’s waist and he is taken slightly aback for a brief moment, he was sure his eyes would fall out of their socket before he returned the hug while keeping hold of Kaidan’s hand.
Bluish-hazel eyes looked up into his, pleading. “I’m ready to come home.”
“Home. Yeah. Let’s go home” Axel exhaled, his lips curved slightly upwards, and a smile spread onto her face, and her eyes twinkled before she broke away.
A small hand grabbed his free one and she started leading the way, following the exit signs.
“Home.” Kaidan repeated the words, a smile on his face. He brought Axel’s wrist to his lips and kissed it, feeling his pulse against his lips, life. It pulses life. Life that had been taken away from him for two years, but now they had a lifetime to be together. Kaidan wrapped both his hands around Axel’s. “A lifetime of memories.” He whispered.
“What’s that, handsome?” Axel planted his kiss on the crown of Kaidan’s head.
“It’s nothing.” Yet it’s everything.
