"Just weeks before the implosion of AllHere, an education technology company that had been showered with cash from venture capitalists and featured in glowing profiles by the business press, America’s second-largest school district was warned about problems with AllHere’s product.
As the eight-year-old startup rolled out Los Angeles Unified School District’s flashy new AI-driven chatbot — an animated sun named “Ed” that AllHere was hired to build for $6 million — a former company executive was sending emails to the district and others that Ed’s workings violated bedrock student data privacy principles.
Those emails were sent shortly before The 74 first reported last week that AllHere, with $12 million in investor capital, was in serious straits. A June 14 statement on the company’s website revealed a majority of its employees had been furloughed due to its “current financial position.” Company founder and CEO Joanna Smith-Griffin, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles district said, was no longer on the job.
Smith-Griffin and L.A. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho went on the road together this spring to unveil Ed at a series of high-profile ed tech conferences, with the schools chief dubbing it the nation’s first “personal assistant” for students and leaning hard into LAUSD’s place in the K-12 AI vanguard. He called Ed’s ability to know students “unprecedented in American public education” at the ASU+GSV conference in April.
Through an algorithm that analyzes troves of student information from multiple sources, the chatbot was designed to offer tailored responses to questions like “what grade does my child have in math?” The tool relies on vast amounts of students’ data, including their academic performance and special education accommodations, to function.
Meanwhile, Chris Whiteley, a former senior director of software engineering at AllHere who was laid off in April, had become a whistleblower. He told district officials, its independent inspector general’s office and state education officials that the tool processed student records in ways that likely ran afoul of L.A. Unified’s own data privacy rules and put sensitive information at risk of getting hacked. None of the agencies ever responded, Whiteley told The 74.

In order to provide individualized prompts on details like student attendance and demographics, the tool connects to several data sources, according to the contract, including Welligent, an online tool used to track students’ special education services. The document notes that Ed also interfaces with the Whole Child Integrated Data stored on Snowflake, a cloud storage company. Launched in 2019, the Whole Child platform serves as a central repository for LAUSD student data designed to streamline data analysis to help educators monitor students’ progress and personalize instruction.
Whiteley told officials the app included students’ personally identifiable information in all chatbot prompts, even in those where the data weren’t relevant. Prompts containing students’ personal information were also shared with other third-party companies unnecessarily, Whiteley alleges, and were processed on offshore servers. Seven out of eight Ed chatbot requests, he said, are sent to places like Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Australia and Canada.
Taken together, he argued the company’s practices ran afoul of data minimization principles, a standard cybersecurity practice that maintains that apps should collect and process the least amount of personal information necessary to accomplish a specific task. Playing fast and loose with the data, he said, unnecessarily exposed students’ information to potential cyberattacks and data breaches and, in cases where the data were processed overseas, could subject it to foreign governments’ data access and surveillance rules.
Chatbot source code that Whiteley shared with The 74 outlines how prompts are processed on foreign servers by a Microsoft AI service that integrates with ChatGPT. The LAUSD chatbot is directed to serve as a “friendly, concise customer support agent” that replies “using simple language a third grader could understand.” When querying the simple prompt “Hello,” the chatbot provided the student’s grades, progress toward graduation and other personal information.
AllHere’s critical flaw, Whiteley said, is that senior executives “didn’t understand how to protect data.”

Earlier in the month, a second threat actor known as Satanic Cloud claimed it had access to tens of thousands of L.A. students’ sensitive information and had posted it for sale on Breach Forums for $1,000. In 2022, the district was victim to a massive ransomware attack that exposed reams of sensitive data, including thousands of students’ psychological evaluations, to the dark web.
With AllHere’s fate uncertain, Whiteley blasted the company’s leadership and protocols.
“Personally identifiable information should be considered acid in a company and you should only touch it if you have to because acid is dangerous,” he told The 74. “The errors that were made were so egregious around PII, you should not be in education if you don’t think PII is acid.”

Olive Elaine Morris (June 26, 1952 - July 12, 1979) was a member of the British Black Panther Party and a grassroots activist in Great Britain. She was born in St. Catherine. Her parents migrated to post-WWII Great Britain while she and her siblings were left in the care of their grandmother in Jamaica. She and her siblings re-joined their parents in London. She enrolled at the London College of Printing to continue her education.
In 1969, she intervened in the arrest of a Nigerian diplomat for a parking offense. The police brutalized her and six other persons. She was fined and given a three-month suspended sentence for two years. She was stripped and threatened with rape by London police. She utilized her experiences with London’s police to expose racism, sexism, and police brutality and to strengthen her political activism.
The Black Panther Youth League recruited her at 17 which furthered her activism. She formed the Brixton Black Women’s Group to focus on women’s experiences in the Black Panther Party. She played a significant role in the squatters’ rights campaigns in her Brixton community. She and other community activists squatted to help establish self-help community spaces including Sarbarr Bookshop.
She enrolled at Manchester University to earn a social science degree. She expanded her activism by working with the National Coordinating Committee of Overseas Students. She visited China and wrote an article, “A Sister’s Visit to China,” published in Speak Out!, the BBWG’s newsletter. Her article explored anti-imperialist struggles and self-help community strategies in the world’s most populous Marxist state.
She became a founding member of the Organisation for Women of African and Asian Descent and edited the organization’s magazine FOWAD! During this time, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The Brixton Service Centre was initially named ‘The Olive Morris House’. It was uncommon in Great Britain to name a building after a Black woman, especially a former member of the Black Panther Party. OK SO IM SUPER W U im like ass at anything that isnt art, like, i tried a lot of other stuff before i succumbed to doing graphic design/art as a job bc i just did so bad at everything. Which, im sure ill be doing a bunch of other stuff on the side throughout my life because IT. IS NOT EASY!!! ITS A SUPER HARD JOB TO GET WORK IN!!! I mean im on the medicore side as an artist so it might just be me but LMFAO. I dont wanna scare you off but it is tough HOWEVER. yes there are things you can do ill readmore this tho
I think the easiest to get into IS like. private commission work. The usual "drawing ocs or fandom stuff" for people. It requires a lot of self marketing- building a platform, making your art a desirable object. Im planning personally 2 open comms again after my current gig is done, and ive been hearing good stuff about the small business options osuuspankki offers- re: being able to do the billing via paypal &helping w the taxing which makes overseas work a LOT easier to figure out. I cant swear on them personally tho since i have not used their services before, but i can give more info in abt a month when Im planning on looking into them more! So. Online market yourself. (you can ask further on this but this post would be too long if i get into that, also im not like a master of this), commission work. PRICE YOUR STUFF RIGHT, Look into how long it takes you to make your pieces and create an approx. price based on your hours spent working. And then price higher.
As for a lot of the stuff i do&post about here. I personally DID start w education, which, i am incredibly lucky I could. I studied graphic design/illustration in Ikaalinen, its a really great school which i can recommend if that is an option for you. I could talk abt it more but I think the main things i got from that education was a) making connections b) learning how printing works which is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. If you want to work in book illustrations which i have done, I recommend looking into the technical aspects of printing on your own. You can learn it online definetly. As for connections, thats a little tougher, but really anything beyond for me has been. Just making a portfolio & CV and emailing and asking for work. Its tedious and annoying but yeah.. Other options im aware of for illustration work is like. in advertizing (though its kinda rare to do ILLUSTRATION), game companies (theres a lot of other stuff you need 2 learn there tho)... Ik some ppl sell their illustrated products eg. stickers, prints etc, but idk anything abt that section. In finland its rly tough bc you rly dont. I like got curious and just googled "kuvitus töitä" and yeah theres just Nothing. It is abt looking for where illustrations could be (looking for small book publishers, looking for childrens books writers specifically and reaching out to them, etc etc) and reaching out and being a pushy bitch its AWFUL its my least favourite part of this job but it is. Yeah..

The 113th Graduation Ceremony of the Shincheonji Zion Christian Mission Center
It was last winter!
There was a graduation ceremony at the Shincheonji Zion Christian Mission Center to produce 100,000 graduates, the largest in the world as a Christian educational institution.
The Zion Christian Mission Center, a free Bible education institution of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, held the 113th Graduation Ceremony of the Zion Christian Mission Center at Daegu Stadium on the 20th.

A total of 106,186 students graduated on that day which makes it largest graduation in the world as a theological education institution.
On this day, the number of people attending the graduation ceremony on site was limited to 80,000 for people’s safety, and it has been broadcast live on YouTube and also worldwide in nine languages. Thus, 300,000 people attended the graduation ceremony online and offline.

As there were many concerns about safety issues recently, the graduation ceremony was thoroughly prepared against incidents.
The Shincheonji Church of Jesus said, 
"We have prepared the graduation ceremony with safety as a top priority,” and, “We will establish a network with the local government to prepare against incidents by checking and maintaining quarantine, safety, traffic, and order several times in advance, and we will operate a monitoring station with the police, fire department, Daegu city, and safety-related officials of Suseong-gu Office on-site. 
In addition, "The church itself deployed 14,000 safety personnel to maintain order inside and outside the venue, and we had them enter and leave for four hours to prevent people from crowding," they said. "In case of an accident, 180 medical staff and four ambulances are also on standby. Emergency rescue training was conducted for all the safety personnel, and all graduates also watched emergency rescue videos. We emphasize that this graduation ceremony is especially safe", they explained.

The graduation ceremony was held with the opening ceremony in the first part and the graduation ceremony in the second part.
In the first part, starting with a praise service, there were congratulatory speeches and a representative prayer, followed by a commemorative speech by Chairman Lee Man-hee.
The second part broadcast videos of graduation ceremonies overseas and then included congratulatory performances; a congratulatory speech by Tan Young-jin, president of the Zion Christian Mission Center; the awarding of certificates; moving the tassels; a commencement speech; and special performances.

The number of pastors among the graduates of the 113th graduation ceremony was a significant increase compared to the previous graduation ceremony, including 37 in Korea and 485 overseas for a total of 522 pastors who graduated.
