King Charles diagnosed with cancer: What’s next for the UK’s monarchy?
The United Kingdom’s King Charles III has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, and will postpone public-facing duties, Buckingham Palace has announced.
King Charles recently spent three nights in hospital to undergo treatment for an enlarged prostate. It is understood that this separate issue was discovered during that procedure.

Here is what’s known about King Charles’s condition and what this means for the royal family.
In Monday’s announcement, palace officials did not specify which type of cancer the king has or how serious his condition is. A Royal source told Reuters that it was not prostate cancer.
The palace said only that the king has commenced a schedule of regular treatments, “during which time [he] has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties”.
“Throughout this period, his Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the palace added.
Buckingham Palace also said the king had decided to be open about having been diagnosed with cancer to “prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer”.
The king’s cancer revelation comes as Catherine, princess of Wales and wife to the heir to the throne, William, also recuperates at home after spending two weeks in hospital after planned abdominal surgery for an unspecified but non-cancerous condition.

The UK was first alerted to Charles’s health problems in January when Buckingham Palace announced he was starting a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate.
Officials said the condition was benign, though the king cancelled engagements and was urged to rest before the procedure.
An enlarged prostate is common in men over the age of 50 and affects thousands in the UK. The condition affects how one urinates and does not usually present a serious health problem. It is not cancer and does not lead to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
At that time, palace officials said the king had decided to publicise details about his condition in an effort to encourage other men to have their prostates checked in line with public health advice.
As a result of this treatment, the king spent three nights at the London Clinic and was seen in public again for the first time on Sunday as he waved to well-wishers on his way to a morning church service in Norfolk.
Charles spent the night at his Clarence House home near Buckingham Palace on Monday after beginning a series of outpatient treatments.
For now, this is not an issue. There are, however, constitutional mechanisms in place that kick in if Charles reaches a point where he cannot carry out his duties as king.
Two counsellors of state can be appointed to act on the king’s behalf through a Letter Patent, a form of grant by the British sovereign.
The counsellors of state would be authorised to carry out most of the official duties of the king, including attending Privy Council meetings, signing routine documents and receiving new ambassadors. However, they would not be able to appoint a prime minister nor dissolve parliament unless the king requested that they do so.
By law, counsellors of state are selected from a group including the king’s spouse and the next four people in the line of succession over the age of 21.
Currently, the primary order of succession to the throne includes 24 people, both adults and children.
Including all the children, at the top of the line is William, Prince of Wales and the eldest son of Charles and the late Princess Diana. His three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, follow him in the line of succession. When Louis was born in 2018, the rule of primogeniture was abolished. This means from 2018 onwards, the birth of a royal boy cannot displace a female member of the family in the line of succession.
Prince Harry, the younger son of Charles and Diana, who has relinquished his royal duties but retains his place in line to the throne, and his two children follow next. After them comes Prince Andrew, Charles’s younger brother and the second eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, followed by his children, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.
Taking out those aged under 21, the next four in line to the throne are Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Princess Beatrice – Andrew’s eldest daughter.
However, the UK press reported in January that secret provisions had been made to prevent either Prince Harry, who has fallen from favour along with his wife, Meghan Markle, or Prince Andrew, who has been caught up in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, from carrying out official duties on behalf of the king. If that is correct, the next two who might act as counsellors of state after Beatrice are her younger sister, Princess Eugenie, and then Charles’s next younger brother, Prince Edward.
According to Richard Fitzwilliams, a commentator on the royal family, a large share of the responsibility for Charles’s public-facing duties will fall to the prince of Wales and Queen Camilla.
However, the king will continue carrying out his constitutional duties, including state business and official paperwork.
“The prince of Wales will carry out his first duty on the 7th of February,” Fitzwilliams told Al Jazeera. On Wednesday, William will attend the London’s Air Ambulance Charity Gala Dinner. The BBC reported that he would also carry out an investiture at Windsor Castle earlier in the day.
William, 41, prince of Wales and the heir to the throne, postponed his own engagements to help look after the couple’s three children after his wife, Catherine’s surgery.
“There are far fewer members of the royal family able to carry out engagements, I mean we now have the king with a cancer diagnosis, we have the princess of Wales most unfortunately unable to perform duties for a number of weeks,” Fitzwilliams said.
“There is no doubt, a lot will rest on both the prince of Wales and, of course, Queen Camilla who has been quietly but conscientiously continuing her duties, but essentially we will have to wait and see what future bulletins show and hope that the king will be back and able to perform his duties very soon,” he added.
William’s younger brother, Prince Harry, is returning to the UK to see his father, after reportedly being seen at Los Angeles airport last night.
Besides the treatment for enlarged prostate Charles has had other minor health problems.
Charles had COVID twice, but officials said that he only suffered mild symptoms each time.
He isolated at home in Scotland in March 2020, during the early days of the pandemic in the UK and before vaccines were available.
There has long been speculation about Charles’s swollen fingers, with some suggesting they may be due to fluid build-up, arthritis or other conditions. In 2008, he had a non-cancerous growth removed from the bridge of his nose.
He had a hernia operation at a private hospital in 2003, when he joked “Hernia today, gone tomorrow” to waiting reporters when he was discharged the next day.
There has been a history of cancer in Charles’s family.
King George VI, the father of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the 72nd anniversary of whose death it is today, had lung cancer. Edward VIII, King George’s brother, suffered from throat cancer.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sent a message wishing the king “a full and a speedy recovery”.
“I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well,” Sunak said.
President Joe Biden joined Sunak and wished King Charles a swift recovery.
“Navigating a cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship takes hope and absolute courage. Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying that His Majesty experiences a swift and full recovery,” Biden said.

Former US President Donald Trump referred to him as a “wonderful man”.
“King Charles has cancer. He is a wonderful man, who I got to know well during my presidency, and we all pray that he has a fast and full recovery!” Trump said.
Separately, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also sent his best wishes.
“I, like Canadians across the country and people around the world, am thinking of His Majesty King Charles III as he undergoes treatment for cancer. We’re sending him our very best wishes – and hoping for a fast and full recovery,” Trudeau said.
“The thoughts of all Australians are with King Charles and his family. We wish him very much a speedy recovery. I’ll be sending a message to the palace this morning and we hope that King Charles has a speedy recovery and a return to his duties as soon as possible,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese explained.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s president, Michael Higgins, said he was very concerned and sent his best wishes on behalf of the people of Ireland to King Charles for his medical treatment and for his full recovery, as well as to Queen Camilla and his family.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan also sent his sympathies.
On behalf of Londoners I wish His Majesty a speedy and full recovery.
I look forward to his return to full health as soon as possible. https://t.co/FXZHNfOJ5s

It may come as a surprise, but Gabriel is extremely responsible and committed to his engagements, especially, because he has a career outside his life as a prince. With F1, he has to be in 5 continents and 21 countries for the biggest portion of the year and his staff has to be a well-oiled machine, with people he can trust to, not only get the work done and represent him when he is not able to do it himself, but understand the life he leads on and work to make things happen as they should.
The majority of his staff payment is made through his personal fortune and only the people working directly through the ends of HRH are redirected to the Royal House. With his retirement on Formula 1, some of these people might be redirected to work on other aspects but Gabriel wants them close. They are like family to him. It’s #Team16 which is the number of Gabriel’s car.
ooc disclaimer: i’m very proud and love this & his team. #dreamteam

In 2012, after attending the Olympic games in London, Gabriel was in a dinner with a few activists and athletes to talk about the importance of sports in the life of children in situations of vulnerability and how it could become an important tool of change. One of the activists in that table was Francesca Machiatto, an Italian researching with a degree in business by the Università di Roma and a master in Science, Politics, and Communication by the University of Oxford.
After that dinner, Gabriel asked for a meeting with her and then, in 2014, The Prince Royal’s Foundation Gabriel de Bragança was born with Francesca announced as the CEO. The Foundation was set up as the vehicle to the Portuguese Prince charitable giving, he intended to use the Foundation as the main vehicle for their future charitable activities and through raising sustainable sources of funds, the Foundation is able to make charitable grants and support projects of particular interest. However, the main focus is to help children, in situation of vulnerability, to thrive through sports. The official location for the Foundation is near the palace in Lisboa, but with Gabriel living in Marabello and then Monaco, they often find each other traveling to meet up.
It’s no surprise they become close during the process of creation, the admiration and gratitude he feels for her is beyond comparison, the foundation is his most prideful project and the money comes from his pocket and sponsorships contracts when need.
Francesca is one of his closest friend, she lives with her family in Portugal and Gabriel is the godfather of her youngest daughter.
𝐄𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐔𝐄𝐋 𝐃𝐎𝐖𝐍𝐄𝐘 — 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲
FC: Robert Downey Jr.
There’s a game Emanuel and Gabriel like to play when the prince wants to do something that Emanuel is completely against it, but, since he knows how stubborn and quit annoying Biel can be, he says that if and only if, Gabriel wins the game, he will let him do what he wants. In all the time they know each other, Gabriel has never won, unless Emanuel wants him to, which could be a max of four times.
Emanuel Downey is a Jewish descent whose family has migrated to Portugal after his grandparents got married. Born in Lisboa, he has entered military life right after high school and thriving in his career, gave him a spot as a security guard for the palace when Afonso was King. He made a name to himself inside the Royal House and became a man of trust especially after Henrique’s coronation. When the twins were born, Emanuel was pointed as one of the personal guards and grew closer to Gabriel. You never saw the young prince without Emanuel by his side, even in his most mischievous acts that used to drive Emanuel crazy, he’d find his way to stand close enough. Biel may say he has mastered the art of trick Manuel, but the joke is on himself because Manuel is always one step in front of him. Literally.
It was no surprise when he was invited to be the Head of Security for Gabriel’s team when he formed a staff of his own. He is responsible for the security scheme to all Biel’s travel, when he is working, vacationing or in public engagements for the King. Manuel has also received honors for his work and probably has a viscount or sir status (ooc: need to figure that out)
𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐈𝐀 𝐑𝐎𝐙𝐄𝐋𝐋 — 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧

Antonia has worked with the royal family before but was assigned to be the head of communication & spokes for Gabriel soon after his eighteen birthday — to her own displeasure. They were not very fond of each other, especially because Gabriel was not the greatest ‘boss’ to deal with. He was in the transition of being a teenager and then becoming a young adult, wanting to prosper on his own with a career in Formula One. Back then, the media was loving to see a bit of the irresponsible and misbehaved prince, they fed that reputation and on his 21st birthday when the pictures of a naked poker game in his hotel room was sold to the press, Antonia was with a foot on the door to resign.
Yet, it only took a honest conversation between him and the entire staff working with her so they could understand one another, but especially Antonia. Gabriel came clear, he was afraid, of course, on that end of summer, he was going to be announce as the new driver for Ferrari and that was a dream he worked for so long and also, the Foundation was now a reality. Antonia promised to protect his dream and him, if Gabriel starts to collaborate, listen and work with her. He was no stranger to media training, to etiquetes or how to proper present himself, he is, after all, a member of royal house. These were the things he was taught from early age. Gabriel only needed to put in practice.
Nowadays, Antonia could not be happier with him, he is a lot easier to deal with because Gabriel is not very open about his personal life and only take public engagements when is extremely required. Usually those are related to the Foundation, the Scuderia or when his his Father, the King, asks him to. With Ferrari, he is usually accompanied by the team’s PR. He has learn to stay away from trouble, or at least, to not have it spread all over social media.

Everything related to His Royal Highness, Prince Gabriel of Portugal must pass by Loretta’s desk first (even before Gabriel has any knowledge of). She is responsible to his agenda as a royal and his personal advisor on the subjects and also works close to Francesca, Antonia and Emanuel. She comes from a lineage that has been providing its services to the Royal Family, both in Portugal and Italy. Her father was a military man in Italy who fell in love with Portuguese woman that used to serve the Royal House, they married and had four children being Loretta the middle one.
Like her father, she decided to have a military career, choosing to join the navy when she graduated from the Universidade do Porto with a degree in Business Administration. She came back to Lisboa after her father got sick and Loretta had to help her mother and ended up taking on a job in the Royal House as one of Biel’s nanny. The woman then decided to further her education, she had military training, a business degree but wanted to search for ways to develop and further her career to keep working for the Royal House in Portugal.
Loretta is almost like a mother to him, what she says goes and he trusts her with his eyes closed. They developed a close bond since she has watch him grow right in front of her eyes and, due her age back then she was always full of energy to keep up with his pace, to learn how to play a new sport he wanted, to accompany him in kart competitions, to go watch games and everything in between. It was hard when Biel went away for boarding school, but it was no surprised when he asked her to be his royal advisor and secretary.
𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐀𝐒 ‘𝐋𝐔𝐊𝐄’ 𝐊𝐈𝐓𝐒𝐂𝐇 — 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 #𝟏
FC: Taylor Kitsch
Born in Texas, he is the eldest of three boys and the one that does not live there anymore. Unlike Emanuel and Pedro, Lucas doesn’t have military training but is a professional fighter with a black belt in many forms of martial arts. Luke was known back home for his career in football as one of the fullback/running backs for his hometown team and, later, for UCLA.
Upon graduation, he decided to not go pro, and instead, he decided to stay in LA and open a martial arts academy with one of his friends from high school. However, Luke made a name for himself when he started to take jobs as a bodyguard. He worked as a bodyguard for high-profile celebrities and met Gabriel when the prince needed to hire a team to help with his protection, during some short passages by the USA. From that time on, every time Gabriel was in the country, his team got in contact to hire Luke until the prince needed to expand his security and was looking for someone to travel with him during the championship.
Gabriel and Luke developed a good relationship and he was more than happy to welcome him to his team. The friendship grew during the years because of the proximity and the amount of time they spend together. Luke is like a family to him.
𝐏𝐄𝐃𝐑𝐎 𝐃𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐎𝐍 — 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 #𝟐
FC: Brent Dalton
While Luke and Gabriel are more alike and easy going, Pedro is the brain operation and not as connected with Gabriel as he wished and why he hired Luke in the first place. Pedro comes second on the chain of command right behind Emanuel when he isn’t traveling with the entire staff. He is a lieutenant for the Portuguese air force and has served since he was eighteen. Pedro is responsible to execute the security plans and evacuations to assure his HRH security and well-being.
𝐌𝐈𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐄𝐋 ‘𝐌𝐈𝐊𝐄’ 𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐓𝐇 — 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲
FC: Jesse Williams
The other American to enter Gabriel’s team is an old friend of no less than Lewis Hamilton and the man responsible to introduce the prince to Mike during Elton John’s Oscar after-party. Mike’s main job other than to keep track of Gabriel’s every move is to be responsible to keep Gabriel’s in contact with the brands, making a network and have his VIP entrance to whatever he wants to. He is not strange to the A-lister celebrities and works closely with Loretta to make sure HRH’s agenda and his life, doesn’t overlap.
Mike is part of Gabriel’s inner circle of friends and used to live with him in Monaco.
𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐋𝐀 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐒 — 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭
FC: Minka Kelly
The biggest move of Gabriel’s racing career was the moving from RedBull to Ferrari. It was right after he won his first championship as a driver and everyone expected him to remain in his current team. However, Gabriel had other plans and has always been his dream to drive for the Scuderia, not only because of its tradition but because, since Portugal doesn’t have a team in the competition, he could represent the other side of him. Italy. And since he is a big momma’s boy, it was his way to honor her home-country.
The duo responsible for this change are Manoela and Sofia. Almost like older siblings, they are very much responsible for Gabriel’s career the last five years. It was a big risk. They did not have experience in managing anyone and were starting their company from scratch. Yet, they were no stranger to the f1 world. Manoela or just ‘Manu’ is the daughter of Ferrari’s former team manager/engineer, working with some of the greatest as Mike Schumacher.
Both have a business upbringing, but while Manu is responsible for the contracts and partnerships, Sofia has a law and economics degree focusing more on the development of the agency.
With Gabriel’s retirement, they are becoming partners to expand the agency and work with more talents outside the motorsport.

Park Zhao is probably Gabriel’s oldest friend, they met in the boarding school, and in an old cliche story, they have been through thick and thin together. Park is the youngest child of an American biochemical engineer and south Korean surgeon and attended Med School, but decided to not persuade a career in Medicine and became a performance coach and has a famous chain of gyms placed in South Korea, Portugal, Monaco, Brazil and the Unite States (LA and NYC) that Gabriel has 4% of the stocks. Purple-Collared Woodstars are known from the western side of the Andes mountains (in lowland elevations) in the Northern half of South America
Tumblr media
Physical Description: Purple-Collared Woodstars, being hummingbirds, are extremely small dinosaurs, about 7.5 and 8 centimeters long and a little more than 2 grams in weight. Both sexes have green backs, but beyond that they look almost nothing alike. Males have long, curved bills, with blue throats and a violet stripe underneath. The rest of the belly is white. Their wings have black tips and their tails are V-shaped. The females, on the other hand, have less curve to their beaks; their bellies and under-throat are orange, and they have orange tips to their wings. They also have more rounded tails. Juveniles look like the females until they reach sexual maturity, where they either stay like that or develop the adult male plumage.
Diet: These hummingbirds feed upon nectar from a variety of flowers (including cacti flowers), as well as some insects.
Tumblr media
By Hector Ceballos-Lascurain
Behavior: Purple-Collared Woodstars follow consistent routes back and forth from flower to flower, consistent in where they go and constantly on the move. Like other hummingbirds, they move their wings extremely fast in order to hover at the flower and get nectar with their long curved bills. They do rest occasionally, to bathe and sleep, but they are on the move more often than not. That being said, they do not seem to migrate, but do go up and down the altitude levels of the mountains following the blooming of the flowers. Males will fly in large semi-circles around the females, making twittering sounds at the top of the arc and making more trumpet sounds at the end of the arc. They also make chittering calls to one another while moving around, and chase flies while making different tweets. They breed from March through June closer to the equator, and more south they breed from June through October. They make nests out of plants and spider webs, placed in thin branches a few meters off of the ground. These hummingbirds lay two eggs which are incubated by the females for two weeks. The chicks are black and grey, and fledge after three weeks. They begin breeding at two years of age.

By Arthur Grosset
Ecosystem: Purple-Collared Woodstars live in coastal scrub and the open woodland from the lowlands up to 3000 meters high in the Andes mountains, and they do not venture into more rainforested territory. They prefer the drier ecosystems for their right types of flowers.
Other: Purple-Collared Woodstars, thankfully, are not threatened with extinction and are very common in their range; they are also very adaptable to human-created habitats.

Tascal
Last August, I built a simple task management app called Tascal. I built the app using Flutter which is an open-source UI kit developed by Google. The underlying programming language is Dart. I learned the basics of app development from two free online courses. The main resource I relied on was a video series from the London App Brewery. The course is $10 on their website, but I took a free version using my Smith Linkedin Learning account. The other free course I took was Build Native Mobile Apps with Flutter on Udacity. You can read about the other free online courses I took last summer here.
Prior to building Tascal (the mobile app), I built a web version for the final project in CS50. You can read my extensive review of CS50 here and watch my video here. The name Tascal is a combination of the words “task” and “calendar.” I also liked the name because it rhymed with Pascal, the name of a French mathematician and a programming language. From the web version, I already had a logo, color scheme (Alice blue and lavender), and basic structure. Furthermore, I had gained experience using object-oriented programming to create task objects.
youtube
My app has three main views, today, week, and project. A user can switch views by way of a simple navigation panel. Tasks in Tascal have a name, a day, and a project. My app organizes tasks by the day of the week and has no understanding of actual dates. Projects are used to color-code tasks. From the project view, tasks are sorted by project and new projects can be created (or deleted with a double-tap). New tasks can be added from either the today or week view.
Tumblr media
Recurring tasks are key to Tascal because of the predictable nature of college assignments. You can read about a typical week of my fall 2020 semester here. Another key feature is the ability to migrate tasks to the next day. This is done by tapping the little grey arrow to the right of a task. Tasks can be deleted by double-clicking on them. If a task isn’t done by the end of the day, it is automatically migrated to the next day. Completed non-recurring tasks are deleted (at the start of the next day) whereas completed reoccurring tasks are rescheduled for the same day of the following week in the to-do state (unchecked checkbox).
Tumblr media
In the today view, there is just a simple checklist of tasks. In the week view, each day of the week is represented by a card containing the appropriate tasks. Rather than running strictly from Monday to Sunday, the cards run from the current day to seven days in the future. As I have said, Tascal doesn’t actually understand exact dates. It just cycles through the days and uses the phone’s data to know the true day of the week.
Tumblr media
In terms of code, there are 13 Dart files, including five screen files, one for each view, one for adding new tasks, and another for adding new projects. There are also five component files including the task and project objects and screen components such as the scaffold, the add button, and the reusable card (used for projects and days of the week). The final three files are the main file, a file of constants, and a file of app data.
Tumblr media
Coding Tascal took 28 hours over the course of eight days. While it was a lot of fun and a great learning experience, the coolest part is getting to use it on a daily basis. To learn more about my college organization systems and old task management systems, click here. You can also read about the technology and apps I use in college. While I love and am very proud of Tascal, it’s definitely not perfect and has plenty of room for improvement.
Tumblr media
Bugs to Fix and Areas for Improvement:
Check the day more frequently
While you don’t have to tell the app that it’s a new day, you have to tell it to check by reloading (exiting and returning to) the today view
Make the today view adaptive to the screen
The today view currently has a set width which means it doesn’t adapt well to landscape view
Set a character limit to task names
If the title of a task is too long, the screen shows yellow and black stripes where there is text-overflow
Add the ability to easily reorder tasks
Currently, new tasks and tasks that have been checked off (or unchecked) are added/moved to the bottom of the list
Allow tasks to repeat multiple days a week
For instance, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
Allow tasks to repeat after a set number of days
For instance, every third day or every two weeks
Allow for subtasks
Add a simple notes screen
This is a feature that I miss from the web version. I did it there because I had a two-row week layout for an odd number of days.
Add user accounts and the ability to access data across devices
Currently, the app just stores data locally on my phone
Upload Tascal to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store
As it is now, the code was directly uploaded from my laptop to my phone through a wired connection

On February 1st 1865 the Highland Railway was formed from the amalgamation of Inverness and Perth Junction and the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railways.
Back in the day every region had it's own local railway company covering the different areas around the country.  The Highland Railway ran from Perth in Central Scotland north to Inverness and then on up the east coast to Wick and Thurso. From Dingwall, the railway ran west to Kyle of Lochalsh to serve Skye and the Western Isles. From Inverness, another line ran east to Keith, where it connected with the line to Aberdeen. Several branches were built from this core network to serve nearby towns.
This is a longer post than I normally put together but  hope you get an idea of how all these wee companies ran, and ended up becoming the one company, before of course the bigger companies ate them all up. Some of the stations are now gone, but others mentioned, like Kingussie, Nairn, Keith and Dunkeld survive to this day, and I often pass through them on my travels north. It also gives us an insight intothe infamous Beeching cuts in the 60's which butchered the rail network, if Beeching had his way there would be no railways beyond Inverness!!
Inverness was always the centre of the Highland Railway. It was the company's headquarters and principle station. All trains led to Inverness.
The original proposals to construct railways to Inverness were made in the mid-1840s. Rival routes were proposed from Perth and Aberdeen . The Perth & Inverness Railway was considered too hilly for the locomotives of the day, but the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) from Aberdeen was authorised. The GNSR struggled to raise capital in the post-railway mania period and eventually started construction as far as Huntly in 1852, opening that line in 1854. The people of Inverness then stepped in and started building their own line from the Inverness end, initially as far as Nairn, the Inverness & Nairn Railway (I&N) was opened on 6th. November 1855 but by then plans were being made to extend this railway to meet the GNSR. After some discussion, the Inverness & Aberdeen Junction Railway (I&AJ) was promoted to build the line from Nairn to Keith where it met the GNSR extension from Huntly. The I&AJ was completed on 18th. August 1858,when it took over the working of the I&N.
The people of Inverness were never satisfied with the long journey round via Aberdeen , especially as the GNSR's station was half a mile from that of the line from the south and connections were not always maintained. Thus was born the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway (I&PJR) which ran from Forres via Grantown, Kingussie and Drumochter summit to Dunkeld where it met with end on with the Perth and Dunkeld Railway which had opened in 1856. The I&P was authorised in 1861 and opened just two years later, being worked from the outset by the I&AJR. The two companies amalgamated on 1st. February 1865 to form the Highland Railway.
Meanwhile construction northwards from Inverness had already started, with a line to Dingwall (1862), Invergordon (1863), Bonar Bridge (1864), Golspie (1868), Helmsdale (1871) and Wick and Thurso (1874). Westward from Dingwall, the Dingwall & Skye Railway was opened to Strome Ferry in 1870. In the 1890s, two additions were made to the main network. The direct line from Aviemore over Slochd to Inverness was completed in 1898, a year after the Skye line was extended to the present terminus at Kyle of Lochalsh. Several branches were opened from these main lines over the next 40 years, taking the final length of the system to some 242 route miles.Tourist traffic has always been a major source of income for the railways in the Highlands . The Highland Railway developed its own hotels at Inverness , Dornoch and Strathpeffer. It offered combined tours in conjunction with the steamer services of David MacBrayne. Each August it had to contend with the annual migration north for the 'glorious twelfth.'
The railway played a major part in the First World War, when the Grand Fleet was stationed at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands . Worn down, like many other railways in the country, it became part of the London , Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923. The LMS continued to develop the lines, introducing dining cars and speeding up services. The Second World War again imposed a considerable strain on the lines.
On the nationalisation of the railways, the Scottish Region of British Railways took over. Soon the development of road transport made a significant impact on the use of the railway. The closure of branch lines, which had started in the 1930s, continued. The Beeching Plan of 1963 envisaged the closure of all lines north of Inverness , but this was not approved because those lines still provided a lifeline in winter. The old route from Aviemore to Forres and a number of intermediate stations on the main lines, were closed. Otherwise the main system remained intact, as it does today. Currently operated by Abellio on behalf of ScotRail, the lines continue to provide a vital link to locals and bring many tourists to the area.
The Highland Railway was well known for its locomotives. Working the steep gradients of the main line, in particular, was always a challenge. Add strong winds and snow and the problems became even worse. The railway introduced the first 4-6-0s to the British Isles, commemorated in the preserved No.103 at the Glasgow Transport Museum . In the 1930s, the LMS Black 5s, locally always called "Hikers", immediately proved their worth. The isolated nature of the country led British Railways to implement complete dieselisation early in the modernisation plan.
Today class 158 and 170 diesel multiple units work most of the trains, but you can still retire to bed in a sleeper on the line out of London Euston and wake up to the sound of a Class 67 struggling up Drumochter.

Largest California wildfire threatens marijuana-growing area (AP) California’s largest wildfire is threatening a marijuana-growing enclave, and authorities said many of the locals have refused to evacuate and abandon their maturing crops even as weather forecasters predict more hot, dry and windy conditions that could fan flames. The wildfire called the August Complex is nearing the small communities of Post Mountain and Trinity Pines, about 200 miles (322 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento, the Los Angeles Times reported. Law enforcement officers went door to door warning of the encroaching fire danger but could not force residents to evacuate, Trinity County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Nate Trujillo said. “It’s mainly growers,” Trujillo said. “And a lot of them, they don’t want to leave because that is their livelihood.” The area is in the Emerald Triangle, a three-county corner of Northern California that by some estimates is the nation’s largest cannabis-producing region. People familiar with Trinity Pines said the community has up to 40 legal farms, with more than 10 times that number in hidden, illegal growing areas. Growers are wary of leaving the plants vulnerable to flames or thieves. Each farm has crops worth half a million dollars or more and many are within days or weeks of harvest.
Things to avoid during your Zoom session (Reuters) An Argentine lawmaker has resigned after being caught on a live camera caressing his wife before appearing to partially pull down her top and kiss her breast during a virtual session of the country’s lower house of Congress on Thursday. The lower house of deputies said in a statement on Twitter early on Friday that it had voted to accept the resignation of Juan Ameri, a representative from the northern province of Salta in the ruling coalition. Virtual meetings amid the coronavirus pandemic have tripped up lawmakers before. In June, Ireland’s Luke Ming Flanagan appeared to be wearing no trousers as he discussed policy matters with his European Parliament peers.
Queen Elizabeth II to trim costs as COVID-19 hits income (AP) Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and her family are facing a 35 million pound ($45 million) hit from the coronavirus pandemic, partly due to a shortage of tourists, the monarch’s money-manager said Friday. Releasing the royal household’s annual accounts, Keeper of the Privy Purse Michael Stevens said a lack of income from visitors to royal buildings was likely to bring a general funding shortfall of 15 million pounds ($19 million) over three years. He said the impact of the pandemic is also likely to cause a 20 million-pound ($25.4 million) shortfall in a 10-year, 369-million-pound program to replace antiquated heating, plumbing and wiring at Buckingham Palace, the queen’s London home. Stevens said the royal household would not ask for more government money but would “look to manage the impact through our own efforts and efficiencies.”
As Virus Cases Surge in Europe, Hospitalizations Lag. (NYT) In Munich, normally brimming with boisterous crowds for Oktoberfest this month, the authorities just banned gatherings of more than five people. In Marseille, France, all bars and restaurants will be closed next Monday. And in London, where the government spent weeks urging workers to return to the city’s empty skyscrapers, it is now asking them to work from home. Summer ended in Europe this week with a heavy thud amid ominous signs that a spike in coronavirus cases may send another wave of patients into hospitals. But just how imminent is the peril? As they weigh actions to curb a second wave of the virus, European leaders are dealing with a confusing, fast-changing situation, with conflicting evidence on how quickly new cases are translating into hospital admissions—and how severe those cases will end up being. In Spain, where new cases have surged to more than 10,000 a day, hospitals in Madrid are close to capacity and the government said it was preparing to reopen field hospitals in hotels and in the city’s largest exhibition center. Yet in France, which reported 66,000 new cases over the last seven days, hospital admissions and deaths, while also rising, are going up more slowly. There is a similar divergence between infection rates and hospitalizations in Germany and Austria. And in Britain, which reported 6,178 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday—the highest figure since May 1—just 134 patients were admitted to hospitals on Monday, barely a tenth of those admitted in early May.
Pope to UN: Use COVID crisis to come out better, not worse (Washington Post) Pope Francis urged world leaders Friday to use the coronavirus emergency as an opportunity to reform the injustices of the global economy and the “perverse logic” of the nuclear deterrence doctrine, warning that increased isolationist responses to problems “must not prevail.” Francis laid out his appeal for greater involvement and influence of the United Nations in protecting the poor, migrants and the environment in a videotaped speech Friday to the U.N. General Assembly, held mostly virtually this year because of the pandemic. Francis said the world has a choice to make as it emerges from the COVID-19 crisis and addresses the grave economic impact it has had on the planet’s most vulnerable: greater solidarity, dialogue and multilateralism, or self-retreat into greater nationalism, individualism and elitism. “The pandemic has shown us that we cannot live without one another, or worse still, pitted against one another,” he said. “This is why, at this critical juncture, it is our duty to rethink the future of our common home and our common project.”
Migrants accuse Greece of pushing them back out to sea (AP) Shortly after reaching the Greek island of Lesbos, a group of Afghan migrants say, their hopes for a new life in Europe were cut short when Greek authorities rounded them up, mistreated them, shoved them into life rafts and abandoned them at sea, where they were rescued by the Turkish coast guard. Turkey, which hosts about 4 million refugees, accuses Greece of large-scale pushbacks—summary deportations without access to asylum procedures, in violation of international law. Greece, which lies on the EU’s southeastern border and has borne the brunt of migration flows from Turkey, denies the allegations and in turn accuses Ankara of weaponizing migrants. In March, Turkey made good on threats to send migrants to Europe, declaring its borders with the EU open. In what appeared to be a government-organized campaign, thousands headed to the Greek border, leading to scenes of chaos and violence. Turkey’s border with EU member Bulgaria was largely unaffected. Greece shut its frontier and controversially suspended asylum applications for a month. Uneasy neighbors Greece and Turkey have been at loggerheads for decades over several territorial issues, and asylum-seekers have found themselves caught up in the geopolitical conflict.
Taliban entrepreneurs (Foreign Policy) For decades, Afghanistan’s untapped mineral wealth has been touted as the country’s trillion-dollar El Dorado. But while the Afghan government has never been able to monetize mountains of copper, iron ore, gold, and gemstones, the Taliban have—and are ramping up their mining operations as just-started peace talks aim to shape the future of a postwar Afghanistan. In recent years, the Taliban have deliberately moved to secure control over regions of Afghanistan rich in mineral deposits, from lapis lazuli mines in northern Badakhshan to gold, lead, and zinc in Helmand and vast talc and marble deposits in southern Nangarhar. The Taliban, who already control most of the country’s mineral wealth, are banking on further developing the sector to make it the bedrock of the country’s postwar economy—or theirs, at least.
The Indian navy and China (WSJ) India’s border conflict with China is pushing New Delhi to look for an asymmetric response: flexing its naval might as it deepens cooperation with other democracies that seek to counter Beijing’s global ambitions. India, which operates one of the world’s largest navies, sits astride shipping routes in the Indian Ocean that connect China to its main sources of oil and gas in the Middle East and to its key markets in Europe. Though growing fast, China’s navy still has only limited ability to operate in a region far from its home shores—and has to contend with the U.S. in its own backyard. “On the northern border, the best we can hope for is to achieve a stalemate. But at sea, we have an advantage over the Chinese,” said retired Adm. Arun Prakash, a former head of the Indian navy. “A show of force at sea can send a message to China that you are vulnerable, that we can interfere with your shipping and with Chinese energy supplies. Their economy would be shaken up.”
‘Tis the season for travel in China. But virus fears cast a shadow over festivities. (Washington Post) Zuo Weiwei has been stuck since February in her hometown Wuhan—yes, that Wuhan—and the problem now is that the city is overflowing with tourists. Wuhan’s government, like many across China, has been offering free tickets to tourist attractions to try to salvage economic growth. For better or worse, it appears to be working, as China approaches its first major holiday season since tamping down the coronavirus. The “Golden Week” holiday is one of the largest annual human migrations, with upward of 700 million people on the move. This year, it will be a crucial test of China’s efforts to regain normalcy and prevent new coronavirus waves. The holiday season begins with China’s National Day on Oct. 1, marking 71 years of Communist Party rule. The period also coincides with this year’s mid-autumn festival, a one-day holiday that falls on the night of the fullest autumn moon. With borders closed around the world, those in China itching to travel have had to look closer to home. Around 408 million highway trips are expected to be made this Golden Week, slightly up from last year, China’s Ministry of Transport said on Thursday. But the flood of travelers will make social distancing difficult and brings the risk of new virus outbreaks that could spread rapidly across the country.
Tunisian migrants (Washington Post) The economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic is propelling thousands of Tunisians to make the perilous Mediterranean journey in search of better living conditions, with the largest wave in nearly a decade reaching Italy’s shores. The strict lockdown Tunisia imposed in March was largely successful in containing the outbreak, but the measures devastated the country’s already ailing economy. During the first eight months of this year, nearly 8,000 Tunisians crossed the Mediterranean to Italy, six times as many as last year.
Palestinian elections (Foreign Policy) Fatah and Hamas, the two largest political factions in the occupied Palestinian territories, have agreed to hold elections for the first time in almost 15 years. The last elections, held in 2006, resulted in a landslide victory for Hamas, leading to bloody clashes between the two sides and a de facto split within Palestine, with Hamas taking control of the Gaza Strip and the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority (PA) retaining control of the West Bank. Leaders said a vote will be held within six months. The move follows an unprecedented show of unity among Palestinians in opposition to recent moves by several Arab states to normalize diplomatic ties with Israel.

Coronavirus Outbreak LATEST Updates: The first batch of 326 Indian nationals stranded in the UK due to the coronavirus-linked global travel restrictions arrived here from London early on Sunday morning. The special evacuation flight AI 130, a Boeing 777 plane which departed from London on Saturday, landed at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) at around 1.30 AM with 326 Indians, according to PTI source. The nationwide tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 59,662 on Saturday and the death toll rose to 1,981 with the country registering an increase of 95 deaths and 3,320 cases in 24 hours till Saturday morning, the Union Health Ministry said even as fresh infections among central armed police forces, and the repatriated Indians raised new concerns among experts. The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 39,834, while 17,846 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, the Union Health Ministry said. Saturday also saw Maharashtra crossing the 20,000 mark, as per official figures released by the state health department, with the state now accounting for one-third of the total confirmed cases in the country, while large numbers of cases continued to get detected in Gujarat, Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said the testing capacity for COVID-19 has been ramped up to around 95,000 tests per day and a total of over 15 lakh tests have been conducted so far across hundreds of government and private labs. However, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the two new cases in his state -- two foreign returnees who had reached Kerala on 7 May in two separate flights under a massive ongoing evacuation plan of the Central Government --  is a warning for all states to be on an alert to strengthen their "mitigation efforts and preventive measures." Many more similar flights from abroad are reaching Kerala and several other states over the next few days under what is being called the 'Vande Bharat' mission. Besides the arrival of a large number of Indians stranded abroad, experts have also warned that the numbers may rise further in the coming days due to the ongoing movement of lakhs of migrant workers being facilitated by trains and buses to help them reach their native places. On Saturday, the situation remained worrying in India's major hotspots like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chennai, among others. While Mumbai cases reached 12,864 cases, with the metropolis now accounting for more than of Maharashtra's total infections, the adjoining Thane district crossed the 2000-mark. In Chennai, the number of cases linked to the Koyambedu market cluster reached 1,867 with the market for vegetables, flowers and fruits eclipsing the Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi (in which about 1,500 people from Tamil Nadu had taken part in March) for the dispersion of the virus.   Besides, reports of fresh infections in the Central Armed Police Forces, which is responsible for providing security along the border as well as securing key industries and establishments, presenting a fresh challenge for the Central Government. Goa, on the other hand, which is classified as a green zone with no coronavirus positive case as of now, hinted that it may allow holding of music classes and reopening of some state-run libraries in a phased manner on the condition of maintaining strict social distancing norms. Cases from states: Maharashtra crosses 20,000 mark On Saturday, Maharashtra reported 1,165 new coronavirus patients, taking the tally of COVID-19 cases in the state to 20,228. The state also reported death of 48 patients, taking the death toll to 779, said a health department official. Among those died of COVID-19 on Saturday was a 51-year-old police constable from Maharashtra's Nashik district, an official said. This is the sixth death of a police personnel due to COVID-19 in the state, the official added. Meanwhile, in Gujarat, the number of coronavirus cases in Gujarat climbed to 7,797 on Saturday with 394 new cases coming to light, while death toll rose to 472 with 23 more deaths, a senior health official said. Of the total new cases, 280 were reported from hotspot Ahmedabad, along with 20 more deaths on Saturday, taking the total case count to 5,540 in the district and fatalities to 363, a health department official said. In Gujarat, the number of patients who died in 24 hours since Friday evening — 23 — was the lowest in the last seven days, Principal Secretary (Health) Jayanti Ravi said. Four COVID-19 deaths were reported in Tamil Nadu on Saturday with the state recording 526 more positive cases, including a five day old baby, taking the total number to 6,535, the health department said. The deceased were all women, with three hailing from Chennai and one from Ramanathapuram. With this, the death toll has gone up to 44, a health department bulletin said. Of the total of 526 positive cases, Chennai continued to lead the numbers with 279, followed by Villupuram 67 and Chengalpattu at 40. In the National Capital Delhi also, 224 new COVID-19 cases were recorded to take its tally to 6,542. In Delhi, there was also confusion over the death toll as the data from the four hospitals showed more fatalities than the number reported by the Delhi government. Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain said there is no reason to hide anything and not a single case will go unaccounted for, but gave no explanation for the discrepancy. There has been a mismatch in the numbers of West Bengal also for several days with the state government's figures being lower than that of the Union Health Ministry. On the outskirts of the National Capital, Noida reported its second COVID-19 death while its total cases rose to 216. The overall figure for Uttar Pradesh also rose. Rajasthan recorded 76 more cases, while 36 new cases were detected in Karnataka too. In Bihar, five Bihar Military Police (BMP) personnel tested positive, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 579. In Assam, a dental college student's test came positive. Central forces report 116 new cases The growing number of infections in five Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) - CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF and SSB -  under the command of the Union home ministry, has emerged as another challenge for the Central Government. On Saturday, at least 116 fresh coronavirus infections were reported by the uniformed organisation, taking the total number of positive personnel to over 650, officials said. Of the new cases, CRPF accounts for 62, BSF 35, CISF  13 and ITBP reported 6 fresh cases. As of now, the total active cases in these forces stands at 231 in CRPF, 256 in BSF, 48 in CISF and 100 in the ITBP. Five personnel of these forces have succumbed to the disease, a senior paramilitary officer said. After home minister Shah's review, the AIIMS in Jhajjar has been designated as a special coronavirus facility for the CAPF personnel apart from their 200-bedded referral hospital in Greater Noida. Health ministry revises policy for discharge The Union Health Ministry has also revised its policy for discharge of COVID-19 patients under which only those developing severe illness or having compromised immunity will have to test negative through RT-PCR test before being discharged by a hospital. Moderate cases of COVID-19 and pre-symptomatic, mild and very mild cases need not undergo tests before being discharged after resolution of their symptoms. According to the rules till now, a patient was considered fit to be discharged if he or she tested negative on day 14 and then again in a span of 24 hours. Political tussle over migrant trains continue The bodies of sixteen migrant labourers who were mown down by a goods train in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district were brought to Jabalpur by two bogies attached to a special train. From Jabalpur, the coaches were further sent to Shahdol and Umaria, said a police officer. Karnataka, which has been at the centre of a controversy over the state government disallowing migrants to leave the state, clarified on Saturday that migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons can hire and use buses provided by state-run road transport corporations on payment basis for travel to other states with relevant permissions. However, the political tussle over special trains for stranded migrant lbourers continued on Saturday with Union home minister Amit Shah, in a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the state was not allowing trains with migrant workers reach the state and termed it as an "injustice" towards these workers. The state government, however, dismissed the charge by saying 6,000 stranded workers have already been brought back, and the state has given green signal to 10 trains carrying more such workers. This claim was rejected by Indian Railways with officials too saying that there was no proposal on record so far with the national transporter to run any more 'shramik' trains to the state. According to reports, so far only two trains ferrying migrants have reached West Bengal. The railways, however, on Saturday night said it had received "clearance" from West Bengal for running eight special trains to the state to ferry people stranded outside due to the ongoing lockdown. On Saturday, a war of words also erupted between the JD(U) and the AAP over train fares of 1,200 Bihar-bound migrant workers, with the Arvind Kejriwal dispensation saying that it bore the cost of ferrying the migrants, a claim rejected by the JD(U) which said the party was speaking half-truth on the issue. The ruling Janata Dal (United) in Bihar said the AAP-led Delhi government has sought reimbursement of the payment and accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of resorting to "cheap politics to gain popularity". Meanwhile, NCP chief Sharad Pawaron Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak to the chief ministers of states, who are not allowing migrants to return home. "I humbly request our @PMOIndia Shri Narendra Modi ji to intervene in this matter by talking to the CMs of the respective states who are not allowing these people to come back home," Pawar said in a series of tweets without mentioning any specific state. 362 people from West Asia arrive in Kochi As for Indians stranded abroad, two Air India Express flights carrying 362 people from Oman and Kuwait arrived at the international airport in Kochi on Saturday night. There were a total of 362 people, including eight infants in the flights which landed here from the two Gulf nations, a Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) spokesman said. Official sources said all the passengers would be subjected to COVID-19 rapid test at the airport before being transferred to their respective destinations by special taxis and KSRTC buses. They will go into quarantine after completing formalities at the airport. Another Air India Express flight from Doha, carrying 177 passengers and six infants, is expected to arrive here early hours on Sunday, sources said. Another special Air India flight carrying 177 Indians has left Kula Lumpur for Trichy, Tamil Nadu, ANI said. According to sources, three other Air India flights - from Singapore (with 243 passengers), from London with (329 passengers) and from Manila (241 passengers) are expected to reach Mumbai on Sunday. Globally, nearly 40 lakh people have tested positive for the deadly virus since its emergence in China last December, while approximately 2.75 lakh people have lost their lives. However, nearly 13 lakh people have recovered too, including nearly 2 lakh in the US and over 1.4 lakh in Germany. Germany and South Korea are among those countries that have been seen as having successfully avoided large number of deaths by their extensive testing and contact tracing measures. But, worries mounted on Saturday about fresh outbreaks in both the countries following various lockdown relaxations, thus raising the risks associated with reopening of economies. Day 12 of 30 Days of Manawydan
Places associated with this deity and their worship
Dyfed - His stepson Pryderi is Prince of Dyfed as was his father Pwll
Arberth - The town plays a high-profile role in Welsh mythology, where it is the chief palace of Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed, and a key setting in both the first and third branches of the Mabinogi.
Gwales - the island where Manawydan and the other surviving knights rested with Bran the Blessed’s talking head. Grassholm has been identified with Gwales, an island in the medieval Welsh story Branwen ferch Llŷr (Branwen the daughter of Llŷr), one of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi. Gwales is the site of a fabulous castle where the severed head of Brân the Blessed is kept miraculously alive for eighty years while his companions feast in blissful forgetfulness, until the opening of a forbidden door that faces Cornwall recalls them to their sorrow and the need to bury the head at the White Mount (the Tower of London). Brân is the Welsh for 'Raven', which have a legendary connection with the Tower of London
London (ludgate) -  Where Bran the Blessed’s head was buried "London" is an ancient name, attested already in the first century AD, usually in the Latinised form Londinium;[62] for example, handwritten Roman tablets recovered in the city originating from AD 65/70-80 include the word Londinio ("in London").[63]Over the years, the name has attracted many mythicising explanations. The earliest attested appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, written around 1136.[62] This had it that the name originated from a supposed King Lud, who had allegedly taken over the city and named it Kaerlud.[64]Modern scientific analyses of the name must account for the origins of the different forms found in early sources Latin (usually Londinium), Old English (usually Lunden), and Welsh (usually Llundein), with reference to the known developments over time of sounds in those different languages. It is agreed that the name came into these languages from Common Brythonic; recent work tends to reconstruct the lost Celtic form of the name as *[Londonjon] or something similar. This was adapted into Latin as Londinium and borrowed into Old English, the ancestor-language of English.[65]The toponymy of the Common Brythonic form is much debated. A prominent explanation was Richard Coates's 1998 argument that the name derived from pre-Celtic Old European *(p)lowonida, meaning "river too wide to ford". Coates suggested that this was a name given to the part of the River Thames which flows through London; from this, the settlement gained the Celtic form of its name, *Lowonidonjon.[66] However, most work has accepted a Celtic origin for the name, and recent studies have favoured an explanation along the lines of a Celtic derivative of a proto-Indo-European root *lendh- ('sink, cause to sink'), combined with the Celtic suffix *-injo- or *-onjo- (used to form place-names). Peter Schrijver has specifically suggested, on these grounds, that the name originally meant 'place that floods (periodically, tidally)'.[67][65]
Ireland - Manawydan went to Ireland to negotiate peace with the king after he beat his wife their sister The long-standing traditional view, once widely accepted,[by whom?] is that the Celtic language, Ogham script and culture were brought to Ireland by waves of invading or migrating Celts from mainland Europe. This theory draws on the Lebor Gabála Érenn, a medieval Christian pseudo-history of Ireland along with the presence of Celtic culture, language and artefacts found in Ireland such as Celtic bronze spears, shields, torcs and other finely crafted Celtic associated possessions. The theory holds that there were four separate Celtic invasions of Ireland. The Priteni were said to be the first, followed by the Belgae from northern Gaul and Britain. Later, Laighin tribes from Armorica (present-day Brittany) were said to have invaded Ireland and Britain more or less simultaneously. Lastly, the Milesians (Gaels) were said to have reached Ireland from either northern Iberia or southern Gaul.[27] It was claimed that a second wave named the Euerni, belonging to the Belgae people of northern Gaul, began arriving about the sixth century BC. They were said to have given their name to the island.[28][29]The theory was advanced in part because of lack of archaeological evidence for large-scale Celtic immigration, though it is accepted that such movements are notoriously difficult to identify. Some proponents of this theory hold that it is likely that there was migration of smaller groups of Celts to Ireland, with sufficiently regular traffic to constitute a "migration stream", but that this was not the fundamental cause of Insular Celticisation.[citation needed] Historical linguists are sceptical that this method alone could account for the absorption of Celtic language, with some saying that an assumed processional view of Celtic linguistic formation is 'an especially hazardous exercise'.[30][31] Genetic lineage investigation into the area of Celtic migration to Ireland has led to findings that showed no significant differences in mitochondrial DNA between Ireland and large areas of continental Europe, in contrast to parts of the Y-chromosome pattern. When taking both into account a study drew the conclusion that modern Celtic speakers in Ireland could be thought of as European "Atlantic Celts" showing a shared ancestry throughout the Atlantic zone from northern Iberia to western Scandinavia rather than substantially central European.[32]
Annwn - the otherworld where his wife Rhiannon comes from and her first husband Pwll pen Annwn (head of Annwn) was partially head off. Annwn, Annwfn, or Annwfyn (in Middle Welsh, /ˈænuːn/ Annwvn, Annwyn, Annwyfn, Annwvyn, or Annwfyn) is the Otherworld in Welsh mythology. Ruled by Arawn (or, in Arthurian literature, by Gwyn ap Nudd), it was essentially a world of delights and eternal youth where disease was absent and food was ever-abundant. It became identified with the Christian afterlife in paradise (or heaven). Middle Welsh sources suggest that the term was recognised as meaning "very deep" in medieval times.[1] The appearance of a form antumnos on an ancient Gaulish curse tablet which means an (other) tumnos (world), however, suggests that the original term may have been *ande-dubnos, a common Gallo-Brittonic word that literally meant "underworld".[2] The pronunciation of Modern Welsh Annwn is [ˈanuːn].Mythical locations[edit]In both Welsh and Irish mythologies, the Otherworld was believed to be located either on an island or underneath the earth. In the First Branch of the Mabinogi, it is implied that Annwn is a land within Dyfed, while the context of the Arthurian poem Preiddeu Annwfn suggests an island location. Two other otherworldly feasts that occur in the Second Branch of the Mabinogi are located in Harlech in northwest Wales and on Ynys Gwales in southwest Pembrokeshire.

Despite Bitcoin’s Dive, a Former Soviet Republic Is Still Betting Big on It
Tax breaks, land deals and cheap energy have spurred cryptocurrency mining in Georgia, which wants to be a digital data leader.
TBILISI, Georgia — For three years, a windowless warehouse on the edge of town has been whirring with enough energy to power nearly 50,000 homes. Day and night, the warehouse, and dozens of cargo containers in a windswept valley, are generating Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency that has created a virtual gold rush in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
Bitfury, a bitcoin technology company, is churning out millions of dollars’ worth of the digital money using ultracheap hydropower harvested from waters rushing down the volcanic peaks of the Caucasus. Even as the currency has tumbled in value, thousands of Georgians have jumped into the game and sold cars — even cows — to buy high-powered computers to mine Bitcoin and join what has become a state-supported dash toward data supremacy.
A former prime minister encouraged Bitfury, then based in San Francisco, with a $10 million loan in 2015. The governing Georgian Dream party sold 45 acres for $1 for Bitfury to set up shop. The government has been selling energy at half the rates charged in the United States or Europe, and it has created tax-free zones to draw in tech-savvy entrepreneurs.
Tumblr media
The efforts have given Georgia, with 3.7 million people, a dubious distinction. It is now an energy guzzler, with nearly 10 percent of its energy output gone into the currency endeavor. The country consumed so much power in recent years that the World Bank ranked it one of the most active cryptocurrency sites in the world.
The whole experiment is likely to face immediate challenges as the price of Bitcoin declines, after a spectacular rise tempted investors around the world to bet on cryptocurrencies.
Most companies tend to lose money when the price of Bitcoin falls below energy costs, and mining operators worldwide have recently been scaling back. The largest mining company, the Chinese company Bitmain, has been closing offices and laying off workers. Last week, Bitfury, which incorporated in London in 2018, announced layoffs at a facility in Canada.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Georgia, however, has been betting its economy on luring blockchain technology, the encrypted storage capability behind all crypto transactions.
Bitfury has helped migrate most of Georgia’s land registry to blockchain, making the government one of the first to rely on the secure digital ledger. Its tax system may soon follow. Georgia aims to beat Malta, Bermuda and other countries known for light-touch regulation of cryptocurrencies to dominate blockchain development.
“The economy’s digital transformation is our highest priority,” said George Kobulia, the economy minister. “We’re supporting this any way we can.”
A Low-Tax Frontier
In downtown Tbilisi, a neon-lit Marriott welcomes tourists. A nearby shopping mall installed a special A.T.M. for Bitcoin withdrawals. A cryptocurrency exchange flashes the prices of Bitcoin, Ether and other digital money on a ticker.
When street protests ousted the last Soviet-era leader in 2003, the government, struggling with poverty, corruption and grinding bureaucracy, began selling itself as a business-friendly low-tax outpost for investment. Big financial institutions came in. So did casinos. A private company willing to take a risk was Bitfury, founded in 2011 by a tech savant from Latvia who was proselytizing about a strange virtual industry.
Remi Urumashvili, a well-connected lawyer and now Bitfury’s main representative in Georgia, said that when Valery Vavilov, the co-founder and chief executive, approached him to seek advice on building a cryptocurrency operation, he was baffled.
Tumblr media
“They told me they wanted to mine Bitcoins, and I’m asking them, ‘Hey, guys, what’s a Bitcoin?’” Mr. Urumashvili recalled.
Mr. Vavilov told him that the currency had introduced a new technology, blockchain, that had the potential for widespread use in business. Mr. Urumashvili said he had seen a potential tax advantage.
“They explained that it’s money that exists on the internet,” he said. “So I said, ‘If a thing doesn’t exist in reality, maybe the tax will be zero.’”
Tumblr media
Mr. Urumashvili worked hard to lobby lawmakers to keep Georgia an open market for cryptocurrency. “I don’t like regulations,” he said, arching an eyebrow. “And there are very few regulations here for anything.”
As soon as Bitfury opened its doors, Georgia created “free economic zones” where mining activities and electricity weren’t taxed. When Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were exchanged for dollars or pounds, Georgia treated the exchange as an export exempt from value added taxes, so Bitfury could keep every penny of earnings.
Rumors have swirled that Bidzina Ivanishvili, a former prime minister from the Georgian Dream party and the country’s richest oligarch, has been a secret beneficiary of the digital experiment. He gave Bitfury a $10 million loan through his investment fund when Bitfury’s executive vice chairman, George Kikvadze, sat on his investment board.
Mr. Ivanishvili declined an interview. Mr. Urumashvili of Bitfury said that no laws had been violated to encourage Bitfury, and that the former prime minister’s loan had been paid off. He had no other ties to Bitfury, Mr. Urumashvili added.
The government even expanded an entire power station next to the Bitfury facility to pump in electricity at no extra cost. With energy prices at 5 to 6 cents per kilowatt-hour, Bitfury and its supporters could envision prosperity, if not around the corner then somewhere just beyond the fog of Georgia’s storied mountains.
Mining With Friends
When Bitfury came to Georgia, one Bitcoin was worth around $350. It spiked to nearly $20,000 before tumbling. Big players like Bitfury have bandwidth to keep operating. But smaller investors have been far more vulnerable.
In villages across Georgia, an estimated 200,000 people secured mining computers to set up in basements and garages. For young people especially who struggled in a tough economy, Bitcoin seemed an alluring alternative to just making ends meet.
Joining the rush was George Kirvalidze, 35, the former owner of a small internet company in the town of Kvareli, three hours from Tbilisi in Georgian wine country.
About half the town’s 6,000 households have some kind of a mining rig, he said.
“Most people who bought in thought high prices would last forever,” said Mr. Kirvalidze, who has managed to mine 20 Bitcoins.
Tumblr media
Even farmers got involved. “At one point it was more profitable than owning a cow,” he said. “Now it’s not so sure.”
Cryptocurrency lives off a blizzard of mathematical calculations. Computers, or miners, around the world compete to solve complex formulas on the blockchain. When a mining computer gets the right answer, it is given a bundle of new Bitcoins as a reward.
The constant calculating superheats computers, and the energy demand — to power the computers and to cool them — has spiraled in places where such currencies are pursued.
Tumblr media
To save energy, Mr. Kirvalidze created a mining pool with nine friends, who grouped their machines in a friend’s garage. One November afternoon, 15 of the 60 miners were turned off because Bitcoin prices had fallen too low to justify the energy use. More would shut down if prices continued to slump, he added.
“Bitfury is one step ahead of us,” Mr. Kirvalidze observed, citing the company’s cutting-edge technology and quasi-state backing in Georgia.
“If we could get cheaper energy prices, too, we could make more,” he said. “That would increase money circulating in the economy and eventually improve growth.”
Tumblr media
‘Onto the World Map’
Forty-five minutes from the center of Tbilisi, trucks rumble over two-lane roads and past faded pink and yellow high-rises. A prison, in matching pink and yellow paint, blights a cow pasture. In the middle of the valley rises the gray confines of Bitfury, plunked on a 40-acre concrete strip protected by guards and a high wire fence.
In a warehouse as big as a Walmart, Ilia Koranashvili, a muscular engineer with a snake tattoo, walked around 160 hermetically sealed stainless steel tanks filled with power-efficient chips and a special cooling liquid. The tanks are Bitfury’s experiment to keep energy costs down and make the mining cost effective almost anywhere, said Mr. Koranashvili, who heads Bitfury’s monitoring team.
Industry estimates suggest the company mines just over 5 percent of all Bitcoins, although no one would say how much was being mined here.
But competitors in Georgia reckon it was a fortune. Vakhtang Gogokhia, the chief executive of Golden Fleece, a small cryptomining start-up, said he was pulling in around 10 Bitcoins a month using one megawatt of energy, enough to light 1,000 homes. Bitfury says it constantly consumes at least 45 megawatts of energy, though Mr. Gogokhia suspected it was more.
Critics say the government, by subsidizing operations like Bitfury, is ripping off taxpayers by forcing them to foot the bill for well-connected companies.
Zurab Tchiaberashvili, a lawmaker from European Georgia, the largest opposition party in Parliament, said the government’s generosity toward Bitfury had deprived Georgians of millions in tax revenue.
“It’s a huge conflict of interest,” he said.
Mr. Urumashvili brushed off such concerns. “Bitfury has given our country many things, including a path to the future,” he said. “When you have a ticket to get onto the world map,” he added, “you should use it.”
Still, as Bitcoin prices highlight the uncertain nature of cryptocurrencies, the government isn’t putting all of its eggs in one basket.
“Georgia is interesting for cryptocurrency miners,” said Mr. Kobulia, the economy minister. “But would it be a major source of our economic growth? Maybe not.”
Correction: Jan. 23, 2019
An earlier version of this article misstated the nation where Bitfury, a blockchain technology company, is based. It is incorporated in Britain, not the United States. The error was repeated in a photo caption. The article also misstated the position that George Kikvadze holds at Bitfury. He is the executive vice chairman, not the vice president. The rate for the energy prices paid by Bitfury was also incorrect. It is 5 to 6 cents per kilowatt-hour, not per hour.

Scoring Your Love (Part 9/?)
Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six,Part Seven, Part Eight. Story also on FF here and AO3 here. Banner by the wonderful @timetravelandfairytales
Tumblr media
Modern AU where Killian is a world famous soccer star who has hit rock bottom and been sentenced to the place where ‘football’ legends go to die – America. While here he crosses paths with Emma, an up and coming musician and film scorer who challenges everything he thought he knew and makes him want more than the game he’s always loved. Will be filled with fluff for days, and eventually rated M.
A/N: Hello all! I am back again with another chapter, this time from Emma’s POV again. We are jumping ahead a few weeks, and surprise – we are still firmly in a land of fluff. This will be the case for a few chapters yet (though there’s some more to the story I have envisioned that will at one point pop up). That being said, I hope you guys enjoy this chapter as it provides some CS cuteness and Emma and her friends as well.
LA was synonymous with many things, stardom, fame, and money just to name a few. But a defining word that both locals and visitors used when describing this place was sunshine. All year round this was a city where people could count on the sun. The weather was supposed to be sublime at any time of year… but sometimes, every so often, rain came to the city, and when it did people collectively lost their shit.
“So you’re seriously telling me that the rain is reason enough to close all these shops?” Killian asked as he and Emma walked down the street under the large umbrella he’d come prepared with for their date today. They had just passed the third place in half a block that had a ‘closed early’ sign in the window and the count was bound to get higher as they made their way to her apartment.
Emma had to laugh at the face of confusion and of complete disbelief that Killian was sporting. Clearly he did not understand the LA mentality, and she couldn’t exactly blame him. London was known for its rain and the gray. To Killian this weather must feel like nothing, but to residents of always sunny California, multiple inches of rain in one day was far from normal. In fact, it had set some people into full-blown panic, causing early school closures and a mass migration of people from their work to their homes. Most people she knew didn’t even own rain boots, but after a handful of road trips with her friends, Emma had acquired a pair and a raincoat to match, helping her enjoy the precipitation rather than distress over it.
“Well we don’t exactly get snow days…” Emma hedged, trying to give her fellow citizens some benefit of the doubt, even if she knew they were all totally blowing this out of proportion. “Besides most people are just trying to get home at a decent hour. You thought rush hour traffic was bad on a good day? Imagine it when you throw a whole day’s worth of rain into the mix. ”
“Good God, I don’t think I can bear to,” Killian mumbled and Emma laughed, leaning closer into him as she did and knowing before she looked back up at him again that his grin had returned. They’d developed a habit as of late; Killian said something funny and charming that made her laugh, and that only made his already constantly good humor burn brighter. It was a seemingly never ending cycle, a really good one that always meant their dates or their calls ended well, with Emma feeling hopeful and happy and wishing she didn’t have to say goodbye.
“You know you could always stay over… wait it out with me until tomorrow,” Emma offered as they got to the front of her apartment building, knowing already that as much as she meant it Killian would still decline the invitation.
“I could, Swan, but we both know what a night at your place would lead to.”
Killian uttered the words as he closed the umbrella to hold the door for her. He was always the gentleman, but the feel of his hand as it slid over her lower back was hardly chaste or polite. It made Emma want things, things she knew Killian wanted just as badly even as he denied both of them. Three weeks – three freaking weeks of dates and talking and getting a little more wrapped up in each other every day, but still he was holding firm to the thought that they should wait until the time was right. Emma knew arguing the point was a losing battle, but she couldn’t help poking all the same.
“That really hot sex you keep promising?” She asked, feigning ignorance of the influence her words would have as the elevator doors opened and they entered together. “Because I have to be honest, I wouldn’t mind giving in at all.”
“Bloody hell, Emma,” he cursed as he pulled her to him, her chest coming flush against his as her hands landed on him to brace herself.
Being so close to him now Emma saw in his eyes just how much hunger was brimming under the surface. All afternoon he’d reined himself in, never closing himself off but holding firm to control over any baser urges. In this moment though Killian was so close to giving in, closer than he’d come any day before, and Emma wished he would just do it. Three weeks was an awful long time to wait with an attraction like this in the mix. Hell, they’d passed the third date mark what felt like ages ago, but at the same time it was kind of thrilling to have a man who cared so much about them making it that he advocated for taking things slower. Despite Emma’s want for more, she gained a little more assurance of Killian’s intentions every time they did this dance. Little did Killian realize, however, she didn’t need any more assurance. She was already certain of him, he just had to realize that.
“There’s never been a woman more tempting than you,” Killian said as his hand cupped her cheek, his gaze glancing from her eyes across her features before landing at her mouth. “You just might kill me one of these days.”
“Or you could just give in,” Emma said before pressing a quick kiss to his lips, one that she knew he would have liked to take further if the doors of the elevator hadn’t opened to her floor. Instead she led him by the hand to her place. “I know you think I only want you for your body, but I promise I’ll still be here in the morning.”
“Well you would be, love, it’s your apartment,” Killian joked and Emma rolled her eyes and shook her head, trying to pretend she didn’t love the banter. Then he got serious, taking her in his arms again and waiting for her to meet his gaze. “Besides, my waiting has nothing to do with trust. I know the goodness in your heart, Swan. I know you’re a woman of your word.”
“But…?” Emma asked, curious as to what still held him back.
“But when I finally have you in bed, Emma, I want you to be sure. I want you on the exact same page as me. The one that says this thing between us isn’t ending, at least not any time soon.”
Emma couldn’t be entirely sure, since she wasn’t a mind reader, but it felt like those last few words weren’t the exact ones that Killian had wanted to say. Maybe she was projecting, but it felt like he didn’t want her to imagine this ending period, and if that was the case he still didn’t have much to fear. As crazy as it was, and as foreign as falling so deeply into a relationship was to Emma, she was in this too. She knew the way they fit together, the way it was easy and how even the complicated messy parts still seemed right. She knew that she had given more of herself already to Killian than she had to so many men in her past, and that even without the sex she felt more intimately connected to him than most people did with anyone. It didn’t matter that he was this big soccer star or that their lives were both crazy busy – they’d been finding a way to each other for weeks now, always carving out the time to truly give this all they could. But, Emma didn’t know what words he wanted exactly or what she could do to prove to him that she was in this. So far her plans hadn’t ever worked. They’d all led to moments like this, moments that were sweet and sincere but not all that she wanted.
Frustrated with her own lack of ability to sort this out, Emma did the only thing that felt right. She pulled him in for another kiss before her doorway, melting into it as she always did and luxuriating in the heat and passion that flared bright between them. Killian Jones was a hell of a kisser, but more than that he had this way of holding her and giving off this warmth and this sense of protection. They were in the middle of her freaking hallway, in plain view of any of her neighbors, but they might as well have been in a world all their own. Emma was lost in this and in him, reveling in the lines of his hard body as she moved against him. She took an indescribable amount of pleasure from the groan/growl that came from Killian before his lips set on hers again, and she swore she was getting through to him too, expressing what she couldn’t in words until an unfortunate interruption came barging in.
“Emma, we know you’re out here!” The door opened but Emma and Killian processed it just a second too slowly to not be caught. They broke apart, but still stayed close, flustered, but together all the same. “What’s taking so long- oh, crap! I’m sorry! So sorry!”
The door slammed back in Emma and Killian’s faces, but the commentary this evening had come from an unexpected source. It would be one thing if it were Ruby who had interrupted. Emma could totally see that happening (since it had come close to occurring before), but the culprit of this interruption was her friend Elsa, someone who never would have dreamed of such an infringement. It was a break in politeness Elsa could never forgive, and Emma knew her friend was probably on the other side of the door blushing like crazy and mentally berating herself. Then another voice sounded through the door.
“I told you not to rush her, Els,” Ruby said, sounding pleased as freaking punch that Elsa hadn’t listened.
“You didn’t say she had a date tonight!” Elsa whisper-shrieked, losing some of her composure. “You should have told me! Not cool, Ruby.”
“But real talk, what were they doing?” Ruby asked, ignoring that last part.
“Kissing!” another voice that was definitely Mary Margaret said with the gleeful giggle that only ever came when her friend had wine. “Definitely kissing.”
“Do you think? I thought Killian was taking it slow,” Belle mused and Emma squeaked out a sharp sound of embarrassment because Killian had definitely heard that.
“Slow doesn’t mean the man is dead, Belle. It’s not an Austen novel. There are more than stolen glances and heart eyes between those two.”
Emma groaned aloud now. Jesus, it was a certifiable party in there and now everyone was discussing her love life in full volume. She would die of mortification if she could, but then she met Killian’s eyes and saw the grin he had going and somehow that instinct to hide and to cower faded away. He wasn’t looking at her like she was the crazy girl with even crazier friends. No, Killian Jones was looking at her like she was the best thing he had ever seen, and Emma was powerless to feel anything less than thrilled. Then his fingertips came to brush a piece of hair that had fallen from her ponytail back behind her ear and she shivered at the contact.
“I guess in your imagining of this there’s also a little more privacy when things finally happen, right?” Emma asked, now very very glad she hadn’t convinced Killian to come in. He chuckled at that.
“Aye, love. It seems you’ve got a full house, but I’m certain you didn’t realize you would when you offered.”
“Definitely not,” Emma agreed, her hand running down her chest as she sighed. “Well I guess that’s it then.”
“Hardly,” Killian replied before bringing her in again and dazzling her all over with another heated kiss. It was tantalizing and dizzying, a kiss designed to entice her and remind her of something she never forgot – that she wanted Killian, and she wanted him bad. But it was also too short, too brief for Emma to come even close to satisfied, and it took everything not to moan at the loss when he pulled back, his eyes having gone darker as they held hers spellbound. “This is far from over, Emma. I’ll convince you of that soon enough, but you can be sure that when I do we’ll have two critical things – distance from the rest of the world, and time.”
“Time?” Emma asked, still distracted from the kiss.
“Time,” Killian responded.
That one word sparking about a dozen fantasies of what she and Killian could do with all of that desirable time. Unfortunately noises from inside intruded again, and with one last goodbye and a promise that he’d call her tomorrow when the team had landed in Denver for their next game she headed inside to face the rabble-rousing crowd currently camped out in her living room.
The chatter going on once Emma closed the door behind her gave the appearance that her friends were engaged in some kind of conversation, but Emma didn’t need to hear the particulars to know that it was staged at this point. She and Killian had no doubt been the hot topic since Elsa’s opening the door, so walking in to hear Mary Margaret discussing a new cupcake recipe she’d tried this week sounded a little less than organic.
“I must have missed the memo on girl’s night this week,” Emma said calmly, sizing all of her friends up and seeing the ranging senses of shame or regret. There was Elsa, who looked just as stricken as she did before, followed closely by Belle who gave a definite ‘I’m sorry’ vibe through her expression. Mary Margaret looked slightly torn, clearly chomping at the bit to ask questions but also wanting to be respectful, but Ruby – always predictable Ruby – went right in for the kill.
“I called an emergency meeting, Emma. A situation like yours requires immediate back up.”
“Excuse me?” Emma asked, halting mid-step. “My situation? What does that even mean?”
“It means that you have a sinfully sexy soccer star traipsing all over this city with you, calling you when he’s away, sending you things just because they make you smile, basically killing it as boy friend material and you’re still hesitating.”
Emma scoffed at the idea. She was hesitating? Wow clearly her friends were off the mark with this one. They thought that she was the one who was taking things slowly, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Emma didn’t know how to feel about that. On the one hand she was glad that Ruby hadn’t been eavesdropping through the door during these goodbye moments (something Emma would not have put past her), but on the other hand it was kind of rude to have her friends plotting an intervention for a problem she didn’t have.
“Did it ever occur to you that hosting an intervention might complicate matters if I were hesitating and decided to finally give in?” Emma asked and Ruby tilted her head considering.
“Nope, but was he coming in tonight?” Ruby asked and Emma sighed and shrugged off her jacket before shaking her head no. “See! Hesitating.”
“Oh I don’t think she’s hesitating,” Elsa said before covering her mouth, as if she were shocked by the fact that she’d commented. “Sorry, Emma.”
“It’s fine,” Emma sighed, the feeling she had of agitation a moment ago slipping away. “And for the record Elsa’s right. I’m not.”
“So why the molasses pace?” Belle asked, surprising Emma with the bluntness of it. Belle wasn’t exactly known for jumping into bed with people. She didn’t do casual hook ups, so her thought that three weeks was a long wait was striking to Emma. Then Belle explained the inconsistency. “Sorry, Ruby’s words.”
Of course they were, and though they were hyperbolic Emma smiled despite herself. She was a person who valued her privacy and who didn’t love to be confronted about things she saw as personal, but the reality was that her friends were more than friends. They were her sisters, her family, and the best part of family was sticking together and knowing that through whatever came you could count on them.
“I’m assuming everything I say never leaves this room…” Emma said, to which all of her friends swore agreement. With their word delivered, Emma finally sat down on the couch between Mary Margaret and Elsa. “We’re taking it slow because Killian wants us to. It matters to him that we do this right.” Belle and Mary Margaret sighed dreamily at the confession.
“What could be more right than good sex? Nay, epic sex even,” Ruby asked. At this Mary Margaret interjected.
“Maybe love? I bet he’s a big romantic isn’t he, Emma?” Emma nodded at her friend’s question.
“He is. I didn’t expect it, but he’s thoughtful and present and interested, and I know that everything he does he does because he cares. It’s just…”
“You want more,” all of her friends said at once, causing them all to chuckle as Emma agreed.
“I want more.”
“And what did he say when you told him that?” Belle asked quizzically. “What were his exact words?”
Emma didn’t even need time to think on them, she just reiterated the words that were engraved in the memory of this evening. Unsurprisingly her friends all swooned a bit at his phrasing, and a mention or two of that damn accent was thrown around, but there was no deflection allowed on Emma’s part. Her friends wanted to know how she truly felt and she had no choice but to be honest.
“I’m falling for him, you guys. It’s fast, and it’s terrifying, but I can’t seem to help it,” Emma mused, her heart skipping a beat as she confessed these feelings aloud for the first time.
“Falling?” Ruby said with a laugh. “Honey you already fell. You’re not even trying to hide that, and neither is Killian.”
“Maybe,” Emma said, which by her standards might as well have been a shout from the rooftops that she was in love with Killian. “But I don’t have the words for that yet. If that’s what he needs for me to be ready… Let’s just say I have to find another way. At least for now.”
Her friends all volleyed around ideas of ways that Emma could say or do something to take that next step with Killian without throwing around that four letter ‘L’ word that had no business appearing so early in a relationship. But it was Elsa in the end who gave the wisest counsel and who got through to Emma in the way she truly needed.
“I think we all might be over thinking this. It’s not about looking to others, Emma. It’s about looking to yourself. How have you always expressed yourself? Where in your life can your emotions really live?”
“Music,” Emma whispered with a smile, one that Elsa immediately matched. No doubt her friend understood better than the others what it meant to find answers in music. It was a totally personal and undeniable experience to create that way, and it was also Emma at her most vulnerable, sharing a part of her heart and her thoughts with someone else.
“That’s genius! A love song! Emma you can do the melody, Belle can write the lyrics – I’ll do lead vocals of course. Mary Margaret how do you feel about tambourine?” Emma gaped at Ruby’s words, thinking she was serious but then her friend broke and laughed aloud. “Kidding! I’m totally kidding. This is all you, Ems, as it should be.”
“Definitely,” Mary Margaret agreed. “And from now on we promise no more interfering.” Emma blinked at that, trying not to laugh right in her friend’s face, but the giggle escaped all the same when Mary Margaret clarified. “Actually, scratch that. We need attainable goals… Hmm, let’s see. How about we promise no more interfering this year?”
“Eh, maybe this month?” Belle offered with her own laugh, tossing a pointed look at Ruby before Elsa chimed in.
“I give it a week max.”
“Oh hush. We will carry on as we always have. And do you know why?” Ruby asked rhetorically. “Because everything we do we do out of love and Emma knows that. Don’t you, Emma?”
“Yup. But just remember, what goes around comes around. And since some of you have intrigues of your own popping up,” she said looking to Ruby and Mary Margaret specifically. “You might want to keep that in mind.”
To that the friends all agreed, moving from Emma’s love life to other topics and enjoying a lovely evening together. And as she enjoyed the rest of the night with her very best friends, Emma found herself smiling about how good things were right now and how great they would be when she put this new plan into motion. Tomorrow she’d start crafting her way to show Killian their truth, and she knew in her heart this was the perfect way to show him she was ready. Soon enough she’d have what she wanted, and the best part about it was she’d do it her way and stay true to herself in the process.
Post-Note: So as I said this is a fluffy installment with both CS cuteness and also humorous friend time. I know I know, to some of you I am a tease and this has been described by a number of you as ‘torturous’ and ‘highly unfair’ but I’ll just go ahead and spoil for you guys - we get to the smut next chapter. To those of you have been hounding me about slow burn on this, I hope you’ll finally be appeased, but in the meantime I hope this was a good addition to the story for you all. Let me know what you thought and have a great rest of your weekend!
