Have you got an old Mac that is no longer supported by Apple? It's time to give it a new life.

How to install the latest MacOS on Mac hardware that is no longer officially supported using OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

I recently discovered this and it has been a game changer. Recently my partner needed a Mac for her music course, so we bought a 2012 Macbook Pro as it was cheap and on paper still had decent hardware for working with music. We were then disappointed to find out that it is no longer supported by Apple, and therefore can't run the latest version of Logic, which she needed to inter-op with the school comptuers. Just as we thought we had bought a less than useful computer, I found this video about OpenCore Legacy Patcher from Youtuber Action Retro.

It's a community made piece of software that allows you to install the latest version of MacOS on any Intel Mac, from the late 2000s onwards. All you need to do is download the application on a mac, it will then allow you to make a bootable USB drive for any version of MacOS you want, and you just need to choose the specific mac you are targeting from a list, and it "blesses" the bootable drive, allowing you to install it on your unsupported mac using the normal install process.

I tried it and it it worked perfectly on the 2012 Macbook Pro, and the latest version of MacOS Sonoma is running perfectly well on the 12 year old hardware. It also allowed us to install the latest version of Logic, so it's working great.

Props to the team for making this and allowing hardware that would otherwise be e-waste to continue to be usable with the modern internet and software. I realized way too late that I probably shouldn’t have worded this post like that.

By “modern MacBook hardware” I meant 2016-2020 Intel MacBooks. I wanted to call them out, specifically, because I have a 2011 MacBook Pro (a Unibody MBP), and it works flawlessly on any distro you throw at it. From what I’ve seen, Retina MBPs also work really well on Linux.

However, from personal experience, the Touch Bar generation of MBPs do not. Thankfully, I have the base model, mid-2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch, which means I don’t have a T2 chip or a Touch Bar, but the hardware is still extremely temperamental. Audio doesn’t work without a manually installable driver, and the machine can’t sleep. Hell, it can’t even wake up from having its lid closed unless I use a certain command on every single start-up.

I’ve spent countless hours just trying to get this machine into a usable form on Linux, so moving to a new distro has always been something I’ve been afraid of because… idk if it’s doable again.

At the moment, I’m not sure if I’m willing to go through all that again, so I might just go back to macOS, for the time being. OpenCore Legacy Patcher will give me the security updates I wanted from switching to Linux, so… Oh well. I love Linux, but macOS is just easier for this hardware. I hate leaving Linux behind after enjoying it for so long, but I’m just not in the mood to re-fix this hardware. If I’m not gonna trust my operating system, then at least it can run properly and not fight me.

Yuck. Zorin OS 17.3 switched its default browser to Brave. I kinda feel like I don’t trust the Zorin team anymore. Claiming to trust a Chromium Crypto Browser over Firefox (even if Mozilla did just pull some shady ass shit) makes me feel kinda anxious about trusting my data on their software. I wonder what other Linux distros run on modern MacBook hardware.

Ah j'avais pas vu, déso pour la redite !

Pour le pb du T2, des gens bossent dessus et c'est dans leur roadmap de cet automne a priori, y'a déjà des issues qui sont ouvertes, après faut pas trop rely sur une livraison imminente du bugfix, ça reste du volontariat et la bande de geeks crypto-communistes VS le Goliath de la tech qui fait tout pour que ça marche pas… c'pas gagné.

avec les Mac précédents que j'ai eus, après 5 ans c'était le hardware qui partait en vrille donc il y avait un truc concret à faire réparer

mais là cette histoire de software c'est tellement transparent comme arnaque, ça me saoule

je n'ai pas de loyauté aveugle pour Apple (le reste de ma tech est Samsung) mais je déteste tellement utiliser Windows que je n'arrive pas à rompre

dude. i think im gonna attempt changing some components of my 2012 macbook pro, like a new 256 ssd, 16gb ram, maybe a new battery..and then try to install a more recent os with opencore legacy patcher

I just wanted a simple little OS that looks good and runs well without being restrictive. Something for out-of-the-box productivity, with the openness to customize if I wanted to, later down the line. My 2017 MBP is starting to behave erratically as the battery degrades, so I thought, "Oh, I'll put a bog standard Linux Distro on the 2011 MBP and give it one final try."

Fast forward 48 hours later, and I have put Debian 12.10 on the 2011 MBP over ten times, and every single time I do, it fails to boot. I've tried connecting it to ethernet, I've tried using external keyboards, I've tried absolutely everything, and the same damn thing happens: After Debian is successfully installed and reboots, it gets to the initial command line interface that Linux shows at the start of it's startup sequence, and... it freezes. It just stops. It boots, shows the GRUB picker, I pick Debian, it freezes. Great. /s

I wanted a Framework Laptop for my next device, but I'm not daily driving Windows, so oh fucking well. Guess my next computer is gonna be another Mac... Ugh... 🫠 Gonna see if OpenCore Legacy Patcher's slice of MacOS Sequoia runs any more stable on the 2011 MBP than Linux. If it does, then that's what I'm going back to.
