Orientation still going strong. We have to do six months of orientation in order to rotate through all the specialties. This way we become comfortable enough to circulate anything. I would like to hear from other OR new nurses on their experiences. So if anyone should see this, please let me know what’s going on.

Newest hot topic is of course COVID-19. The elective cases have all been canceled (for the most part). We were told that should we need to keep up our hours, we can offer to help the floors out or screen visitors coming through the main entrance. We also have a drive through test site implemented. Are other hospitals doing similar things?

I want to hear from you all. I started this blog because I need a place to vent sometimes. I want us to vent (professionally and within HIPAA) together. It’s always nice to know someone else may be going through the same thing.

Officially NINE months in!

Man, there is nothing quite like the operating room. It’s so different than floor nursing. I have seen so much in my short time here. From traumas to simple procedures, I am just in love. I made it on the Neuro Team, but since I work 12 hour shifts, I do it all. Ortho, ENT, Urology, GYN, Neuro, General surgeries, and even Robotic cases.

I think this is the change I needed.

But I really think my charge nurses and boss have a lot of confidence with me. They’re letting people shadow me and help out our newer nurses.

Idk why, I’m the biggest klutz.

But hey, if they are ok...

Five months in and I’m 3/4 of the way out of orientation. I’m out in simple cases on my own. I have amazing scrub techs to work with me. I know that I know more than I let myself to think. However, it doesn’t stop me from overthinking and making little mistakes. (Ie: doc asked for a catheter tip syringe in a urology case. Thought A- a syringe with a pointy end made to go into catheters. Thought B- wait, does he want a syringe? Or is this a type of catheter. The correct thought was A.)

I say 3/4 because I’ve started “Buddy Call” and I have a preceptor on bigger cases. Buddy call is what it sounds like. You’re on call but paired with a buddy nurse. It helps you learn how to run things while on nights or weekends when you’re called out. I appreciate it so much. I’m pushing to go on the Neuro team so I have preceptors first spine cases and craniotomies. I love it so much.

I also love trauma. But that’s a whole other story.

My backbone is a tad thicker. I’m finally able not to cry at work and wait until my drive home. God, that makes me sound like a new grad again. I hate it. I’m also learning to let things go. But I’m not one to forget. If I’ve given them a chance (between tech, nurse, or doctor) and have been nice, only to receive attitude and impatience in return, they don’t get nice Britt again. They get a cold, stoic Britt. Though that may be hard to tell behind a face mask (I’m trying here y’all ).
