I just restarted Emerald Outpost with more worldbuilding, and I'm particularly proud of the new prologue:

When I try to remember what happened, it comes in broken flashes: a small dark room. A cold tile floor. The sound of metal on metal. Blinding, unbearable pain coursing through my body. Screams coming from very nearby. This is usually the point where I blink and find myself on the kitchen floor, unable to breathe. I don't remember starting to cry. Sometimes I'm kneeling on glass from whatever I was holding. Sometimes my wife is in front of me, holding me firmly here. Her voice is always calm, her fingers gentle, but her eyes are so sad they break me all over again. So no, I don't remember what really happened. Nasir doesn't, either. But this will never be over if we don't figure it out. It will never stop. Oplin and Oré both falling, billions dead or worse. The war used to matter, enemies used to matter, but now all I can see is people who don't know what's coming. Or not. It might never get that bad. But others would keep suffering. He would keep trying. The risk is too great. I feel sick. Minerva suggested I start slow and build up to it from the very beginning. Most of my life has come back now, but there are still gaps. It's hazier than it once was. Things that barely seemed to matter at the time make me want to curl up and die. But I'm going to do my best anyway. For the sake of everyone I've ever known. There is an argument to be made that everything began with my first day of work, more than two decades ago. If I hadn't taken the job, none of what followed would have happened. But that's a self-indulgent, procrastinating thought. It all really began three years later with the Emerald Outpost mission. It was supposed to be a punishment, but I can't imagine anyone in charge had any idea how true that would become. Or did they?

That thing is a Queen? ugh. I used to burst out laughing hysterically every time she tried to laugh manically. Now I'm just, meh.

Opaline is very much a Rita Repulsa type. She's not intimidating and she's not really funny. I like her better in the Tell Your Tale cartoon form. She looks like a botched pony generator OC from deviant art, complete with the wierd hoof bracelet things.

I like Misty in that cartoon form to. Misty is cute, NGL.

But I have not gotten to episode 2 of MYMch2 yet. And now they are going to drop another 8 episodes on me. Joy.

Oplin’s Socioeconomic Classes

Oplin is the planet in Emerald Outpost. The entire thing is covered by a single city, Coruscant-style, with 20 billion inhabitants. The city has a name, but that isn’t important here. And I want to share the class system I came up with. There are 5 classes:

Ruling Wealthy: 50,000,000 people, making up 0.25% of the population. They basically own the planet, which despite the futuristic improvements is indeed still capitalist. They (or their ancestors) paid to build the tight housing, so they take in the rent. They own the factories and farms and off-world import companies, so though they don’t sell directly to consumers they profit on all sales of goods. They also hold intellectual property for medicines/procedures. They can’t do anything about the UBI or the regulations that mean they can’t jack up prices so high the universal money is useless, and they do in fact pay taxes, but they find other ways to hoard wealth. A favorite is keeping the best treatments to themselves and charging lots of royalties for each use, with some exceptions to encourage people working for their companies.

Government Wealthy: 400,000,000 people, making up 2% of the population. Don’t own any of the means of production but make exorbitant amounts of money making laws and running war plans. Also includes the equivalents of judges and generals, as well as the leaders of each of the 20 districts, the Unified Representatives for the whole city, and more local leaders. They generally live in some level of out of touch excess, but honestly less societal power than they think. Although enough to cause damage and start wars and ban things based on their biases.

Upper Working Class: 7,650,000,000 people, 38.25% of the population. Jobs pay better depending on if they need additional schooling, or if it is highly valued by society. This includes teachers, janitors, artists (of all kinds), government workers (from spies to regulators), doctors, lawyers, merchants, sex workers, the entire tourism industry, etc.

Lower Working Class: 11,900,000,000 people, 59.5% of your population. Includes standard jobs that are less valued, and/or available to people who take up their right to leave school early. They must pay a living wage, but a lower one. This includes drivers (of trains and transports), off-world shippers, mechanics and other maintenance workers, factory workers, schedulers (like secretaries, front desk people, personal assistants, etc), private market merchants, etc.

A note here: neighborhoods and lives are not segregated between these two middle classes at all. The main difference is the number of people living in a single apartment and the quality of their clothes/belongings. The one more serious issue is that they are more likely to need to move often or rely on their communities for help in the case of an unexpected loss of job or expensive emergency.

Destitute Poor: 200,000,000 people, 1% of the population. This is so low purely because UBI exists, so everyone has some grace for fees or being unemployed. Medical and student debt don’t exist, although other debt does. The issue is community, actually. It’s good that society has moved towards people living in groups, across generations or with friends, and neighbors rely on each other. But the people in power saw this as an opportunity. There are no official safety nets for if you’re sick, disabled, struggling to hold down a job, a single parent, etc. None of this is an issue if you have family and friends to rely on, but for the very few people who don’t have those connections, they have to answer random roommate ads or try to make enough for rent and food on their own. And if there’s a complication, and they’re down to only UBI with no one to help, well. They could choose between rent or food, except obviously they can’t. The practical solution is that there are seedy, tiny, unregulated apartments in the less upstanding parts of the city (full of smugglers, the few drugs hard enough to be illegal, and dueling rings). But you have to be tough to live there and there aren’t many legal opportunities, the punishments harsh if caught for the illegal ones. The other thing that is affordable on UBI is living in hotels. But there are stay limits to separate hotels from apartments, so they must move a lot, which makes holding down a job even harder.

Scream Review

Scream is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The film stars Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, Dylan Minnette, Mikey Madison, Jasmin Savoy-Brown, Sonia Ammar, Marley Shelton, David Arquette, Courtney Cox, and Neve Campbell. Set twenty-five years after the events of the first film, a new Ghostface killer emergers in Woodsboro to terrorize the town and it’s residents. It’s up to a new group of teenagers to stop and find the new Ghostface before it’s too late. I’ll be honest even though I’m a fan of this franchise I was a bit skeptical about how I would feel about this film given that Wes Craven is no longer with us. I’m thankful to be proven wrong with this film as this felt like a great homage to what Wes created with the first film and a love letter to us fans. 

This new cast of characters are all fun and fit into the Scream world quite well. I really enjoyed seeing this new group of teenagers figure out who the killer is and play within the rules of this universe. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Oretga are the heart of this film as two estranged sisters who through certain events reconnect with one another to help stop Ghostface. It’s a really sweet relationship in the film and something that felt fresh in the series. The legacy characters of Dewey, Gale, and Sidney returning are great and how the characters are incorporated into the story is one of the film's strengths. It’s smart of the creators to bring in these legacy characters at the right moments without overshadowing this new group of teenagers in the film. 

As with any Scream film comes the meta approach to riffing on films of the time period it’s set in and this one is no different. It doesn’t come across as distracting or too much here, the creators knew what they were doing when writing and directing this film. The humor also works with the kill scenes being effective at what is trying to be conveyed on screen and at times fun to watch. There isn’t much I didn’t enjoy about this film except for maybe a nitpick here and there. The best way to go into this film is knowing as little as possible to get the most fun out of the surprises and easter eggs that are featured throughout. Without Wes Craven I didn’t think another Scream film could be made that would work, thankfully the creators and everyone behind this film made it work with the right amount of love and care that would make any fan of this franchise happy.
