SeiSub Tanabata Fest 2024 Prompts and FAQ
Prompts and FAQ
Welcome to SeiSub Tanabata Fest 2024!
July 7-13, 2024
#SeiSubTanabataFest is a fest ship event organized for Sakurazuka Seishirou and Sumeragi Subaru. Pick whichever version of CLAMP works you feel like creating something for with SeiSub (Tokyo Babylon, X/1999, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, etc.).
It is in celebration of the coming Tanabata (July 7th in Japan). Each day features prompts relating to traditions or imagery commonly associated with Tanabata. It will run from 7 July to 13 July 2024.
It marks the halfway point (138 days) in between Seishirou’s birthday (November 22nd) and Subaru’s birthday (February 19th). This indicates their relationship as star-crossed lovers, which makes their relationship on Tanabata all the more intriguing.
Everyone is allowed to participate!
DATE DAY PROMPT

Jul 8 DAY 2 -

FAQ
How do I participate?
Create something in line with the themes above and just tag #SeiSubTanabataFest! We also have a SeiSub Tanabata Fest Ao3 collection available for you to post to. Fic, art, podfics, webcomics, moodboards, etc.—it’s all welcome!
As we will be retweeting and reblogging posts for the weekly fest, please make sure to check our socials to support all the participants!
Twitter (@SeiSubTanabata)
Tumblr (@SeiSubTanabataFest)
The AO3 collection is here:
Can I use a work I’ve already started?
Yes, if it fits the theme of the day you are posting on and the work has not been published yet.
Do I have to include all the prompts listed for the day into my work?
That isn’t necessary. The prompts are merely suggestions.
Can I include other prompts not included in prompts for the day?
Of course! Again, the prompts are merely suggestions. As long as your work follows at least one prompt for the day, you can submit it.
Do I have to participate every day?
No, that is not necessary.
What if my work incorporates prompts from 2 different days?
You can choose to post it on any of the 2 days, e.g. if you write a fic of characters being soulmates and stars, you can choose to post it on either day 1 or day 2.
Can I submit a late entry?
If you’re posting while the event is running (between 7 July and 13 July 2023), we are fine with that. However, if you can’t make that day, we will accept late entries. Keep in mind you will be posting outside the original posting period, but you can post whenever you can post afterwards.
Are there any content restrictions?
No, we do not believe in restricting problematic fictional content. As long as it’s properly tagged, we accept content of all ratings and themes.
Are there minimum requirements for works?
No. Do whatever you want as long as you create a work for the event. It can be any length or amount of effort you want to put in.
What does "FREE DAY - choose your own prompt" mean on Day 3?
You can choose a prompt that is not on our prompt list to use. This day has the most flexibility for the idea you want to create.

so, with rt having their anniversary on april 1st, they decided this year to celebrate for 20 whole weeks for their 20th anniversary. with one episode a week on fridays starting in march and ending in july, they've released one-off mystery episodes of their shows and products that have been cancelled, put on hiatus, or otherwise ended naturally. the exceptions are on the spot and camp camp, the former of which is coming back later this year, and the latter having a new season premiere later next year in 2024, both having been confirmed at rtx 2023.
it makes sense for rt to build up such a major milestone by teasing what they're doing to celebrate, but i think the way they've done it is...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
not great.
that's why i'm just gonna put what each mystery video is, with links to youtube because the rt site fucking sucks for convenience!
week 1 (march 17th) | ahwu week 2 (march 24th) | rage quit week 3 (march 31st) | million dollars, but... week 4 (april 7th) | achievement h.o.r.s.e week 5 (april 14th) | on the spot (was originally streamed live)* week 6 (april 21st) | master & apprentice week 7 (april 28th) | rt docs (at least, a ~15 minute parody of one from funhaus) week 8 (may 5th) | AH gta iv: cops and crooks week 9 (may 12th) | AH: theater mode (the youtube version got cut down from around 1 hour 40 minutes to close to 30 minutes, which is cringe) week 10 (may 19th) | rt recap week 11 (may 26th) | rt shorts week 12 (june 2nd) | music video: dusk boys: u.f.whoa week 13 (june 9th) | chump (was originally streamed live)* week 14 (june 16th) | immersion week 15 (june 23rd) | p.a.n.i.c.s week 16 (june 30th) | hard mode: uncomfortable guess who?* week 17 (july 7th) | lazer team: boot group (animated video) week 18 (july 14th) | [trailer] a simple walk into mordor: part 2 week 19 (july 21st) | camp camp week 20 (july 28th) | [prologue] red vs blue: restoration (series finale)
an asterisk (*) means there's bonus content for the labeled video that's unfortunately exclusive to the rt site, with hard mode's bonus video being behind a paywall, for some reason
note: the rvb restoration prologue came out on youtube on july 8th, but i chose to keep the date as the 28th because that's when it was supposed to come out. i didn't know it was released earlier on purpose until i was lucky enough to see an explanation from an rt employee on reddit, of all places:

Didn't Wanna Feel Older in 2024? TOO LATE!
So long, 2023! You have been a weird-@$$ year to say the least. Between by having to repair old thumb drives, purchase a new printer, finding out I'm susceptible to anxiety attacks, trying out dating for the first time, getting my Discord and Steam account hacked, starting a new Discord server since said account was never unhacked, opened myself up to commissions, managed to post art for Halloween, got Covid, summoned more Kaijus to play an elaborate game of poker, and had a merry enough Christmas. Here's hoping 2024 will prove better. At the moment I have no new goals, since I just want to relax after four months of constantly being active. There's a mile of books, movies, and TV shows I need to get caught up on! My opinions on all of them will be given in future Giraffe's Eye Views, but for now let's get to what you all came here for: yet another unnecessarily long list of things celebrating major milestones this year!
You all loved it when I did this last year. In fact it got more attention that anything else I posted, including the original art I put way more effort and time into. Nah, that didn't sting at all. Seeing my sketches get ignored is so much fun. Passive-aggressive joking aside, I do still love making these lists, so let's get started with some major stuff this year.
Tumblr media
Thanksgiving wasn't too long ago, so why not mention that the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade turns 100 this year? I know, that's insane! Watching this festive event has become a seasonal staple in my house and is the only reason I've ever signed up for Peacock. Thank goodness in all those years it hasn't been smashed by a giant monster.
Tumblr media
Godzilla turns 70 freak'n years old this year! How crazy insane is that? Here's hoping his old age won't slow him down when he teams up with King Kong this April. Even if it does, Gojira will continue being cinema's coolest character!
Tumblr media
Contrasting with the King of the Monsters, Mary Poppins turns 60 years old this year. This movie, considered to be Walt's last masterpiece, has aged considerably well even after all this time.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, and Mickey Mouse enters the public domain this year. Still not entirely sure how that works, but whatever. What I do know is...

There are as many variations on the Feast of the Seven Fishes as there are participants. Menus often have changed drastically since the turn of the 19th century, but the object of cultivating family and heritage remains. Photograph By Andrew Scrivani, The New York Times/Redux
What is the Feast of the Seven Fishes?
This Christmas Eve seafood feast is an Italian American tradition that dates back to an immigration wave in the 1900s.
— By Allie Yang | Wednesday July 26, 2023
An episode aptly titled “Fishes” from Hulu’s breakout series The Bear explores complex family dynamics against the backdrop of an Italian American tradition: The Feast of the Seven Fishes.
Throughout the Season 2 episode, no one seems able to adequately explain its history. Characters attempt to contextualize the origins of the meal, with explanations ranging from “it’s tradition… the seven fishes” to “it’s a chance to be together and to take care of each other and to eat together, and there’s seven fishes, which means you have to make seven entirely different dishes, seven entirely different ways.” A discerning viewer will note the circular reasoning.
By episode’s end, the audience might leave with unanswered questions. Namely: What is the Feast of the Seven Fishes, and where did it originate?
Italian Origins
The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a dear tradition to many Italian Americans who enjoy (at least) seven different seafood dishes on Christmas Eve. You might find labor-intensive preparations of baccalà (salted cod fish), calamari fritti with lemon and marinara sauce, stuffed escarole, fried smelt, scungilli (conch) in a chilled seafood salad, and stuffed clams oreganata.
You won’t hear about “festa dei sette pesci” in Italy though, says Michael Di Giovine, professor of anthropology at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and author of Edible Identities. In Italy, the holiday is simply “la vigilia,” “the eve” of Christmas. And fish is really only eaten in Southern Italy on the holiday.
This is because the feast has evolved to be uniquely Italian American over the past hundred years.
At the turn of the 19th century, Italian immigration exploded, numbering 300,000 in the 1880s, jumping to 2 million by 1900. As Italian immigrants moved away from extended family and their children grew and married Americans, the Feast of the Seven Fishes evolved from la vigilia into something much more extravagant. Di Giovine says the feast was a way to differentiate themselves, a marker of identity. It also became a tradition to strengthen bonds with both family present and ancestors past.
Today, there are as many interpretations of the feast as there are participants, Di Giovine says.
Why Fish—And Why Are There Seven?
A vast majority of Italian immigrants to the United States were from rural Southern Italy at the turn of the 19th century. When the country was unified in 1861, they had new freedoms from a weakened aristocracy. They came to America because there were jobs (from building railroads to skyscrapers) and mobility. Friends and family found success and brought their loved ones to the U.S.
Some say fish was chosen for the Feast because it was plentiful for impoverished families in Southern Italy. Others say the sea represented Italian Americans’ connection between their old and new homes. Still others say fish was served simply because it’s seen as an aphrodisiac.
Though many families no longer associate the feast with Catholic tradition, there’s likely a religious explanation for the seafood. The first Christians used fish iconography to denote membership. In one biblical tale, Jesus procures a large catch of fish, and promises his disciples an abundance of followers when he commands them to be “fishers of men.” To this day, the Pope wears the “ring of the fisherman.”
Seven is also a holy figure: it’s the number of sacraments and deadly sins. In the Bible, Jesus miraculously feeds a crowd of people with seven loaves and fishes. “Consumed in multiples of seven, then, fish may be a deeply ingrained symbol of sanctifying and revivifying a plentiful group, and of promising continued abundance for posterity,” Di Giovine writes in a 2010 paper on the subject.
Tradition is Always Evolving
Italian culture is very regional, with small communities specializing in certain foods. North and Central Italy didn’t eat fish on Christmas Eve. The rush of immigrants at the turn of the 19th century were from the South, which has Spanish influences on the language and food. Fish, olive oil, vinegar, beans, tomatoes and fried foods like pizza fritta (pizza pockets) and zeppoles (donuts) are foods from the Italian South (notably not pasta).
In the 1900s, anti-Italian sentiment was high and Italians from different regions were lumped together by outsiders. Eventually, traditions also became melded together to produce the current Americanized image of pan-Italian food that ranges from pizza to cannoli, which are both regional in Italy.
After World War II, Italians were accepted members of American society. They moved (with everyone else) to the suburbs, their kids went to school with those from other backgrounds, and TV was popularized, homogenizing the population’s taste. Language and religion are lost quickly in this situation, Di Giovine says, and food could be a way to separate yourself that you could choose when to use.
Writer and director Robert Tinnell made a comic in 2004 about his experience with the Feast of the Seven Fishes, which he later made into a 2019 movie. Growing up in North Central West Virginia, he fondly remembers his great grandmother organizing the Feast. After she died, his grandfather and other men in the family took over. That particular masculine domesticity is something that the first Italian immigrants would have also performed out of necessity: men came to America first, without their wives and daughters.
However, knowledge about where to shop, when to prepare, how to cook, the history behind the meal, and family traditions quickly became the responsibility of mothers to pass down to their daughters, Di Giovine says. They are also likely the ones who have the ultimate say in making changes to recipes. Over time, families often tweak the menu to make things easier, cheaper, more abundant, and more accommodating of dietary restrictions.
“We’re not precious. I do a couple things that would have been on her table,” Tinnell says, referring to his great grandmother. “But then my wife loves seeking out new things. A few years ago, we picked up oysters and set them up outside over open flames; we roasted them in the shells. My family never did that. But I wouldn't trade the time that I spend with my father-in-law, my brothers, to all the kids—it's a new thing. And that's what's important here… that togetherness and that shared experience.”

Recovering Rare Documents & Local History with Don Wilson
By: Lisa Timmerman, Executive Director
It is impossible to not come across Donald L. Wilson (1943-2023) in HDVI’s archives, collections, and Lee Lansing Research Library. Not only did he provide much of our resources and knowledge on Prince William County history, family history, and local history resources, he arranged for our historic society to receive books, transcriptions and extracts/abstracts of court records, and first-person accounts to help Dumfries history flourish.
Tumblr media
(Map of Prince William County, Virginia: compiled from U.S. Geological Survey and other data and corrected with the assistance of reliable residents of the county, 1901, via Library of Congress Geography and Map Division)
“During a visit to the Archive Room, at the basement of the County Courthouse, on April 24, I had an opportunity to take stock of what old record books are currently on file there. Original deed, will, and minute books that survive from the 18th and 19th centuries are mostly there.
While leafing through Court Order Book [10], 1755-1757, I found a loose document tucked between pages 6 and 7. It turned out to be a contemporary copy, perhaps the original copy, of a deed dated 1747. Why it was left there is unknown but it should have been recorded in Deed Book K (1746-1748) which has been missing since the Civil War. Following is an abstract of the document:
Indenture, 24 July 1747, between John Frogg of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, gentleman, and James Keith of the said same parish and county, clerk [minister]. Consideration: 5 shillings sterling paid by said James Keith. All that part of two parts or parcels of land in Hamilton Parish (formerly granted to said John Frogg by the Hon. Paying 1 peppercorn upon the Feast of St. Michael if demanded.  [Wording indicates that a release is intended as well as the lease.] Signed: John Frogg. Wit: And’r Rose, Daniel Campbell, Robert Peter, William Grant. Acknowledged at court 27 July 1747. Test: P. Wagener, Clerk. A copy, teste J. Williams, Cl. Cur.
[My earlier statement that this might be the original copy is in error. This copy was made by clerk John Williams who served at Dumfries 1795-1813. Since the land now falls with Fauquier County it perhaps was involved in a land cause before the Dumfries District Superior Court. James Keith was minister of Hamilton Parish from 1736 to 1751. It may be of interest that he was also the maternal grandfather of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. This tract may represent the Hamilton Parish glebe granted to Keith after Dettingen Parish was cut off in 1745. The vestry book of Hamilton Parish is said to have been destroyed by vandals during the 19th century. IT is not clear what became of the register of births, marriages and deaths for that time. Could it have been handed down among Keith’s family papers?]
--Don Wilson”
Beside for the recovery of previous lost information, Wilson’s transcription and analysis also provide wonderful insights into the financial and religious life of early Prince William County residents. The Feast of Michael and All Angels, Michaelmas, continues to be celebrated on the 29th of September every year. Associated with the beginning of autumn, it was known as a “quarter day,” and these dates (along with 03/25, 06/24, 12/25) were designated as the “start” dates to hire servants, pay rent, or begin new leases. Michaelmas was seen as the start date of a new productive season of farming and business as people paid debts and elected new magistrates in Great Britain. Identified as an angelic warrior actively fighting evil, St. Michael served as protection against the darker and colder days with the eventual incoming winter season. Fun British folklore associated with the old calendar of Michaelmas, 10/10: supposedly the last day one should pick blackberries as Lucifer fell from the heavens this day and landed on a blackberry bush. After cursing, scorching, spitting, stamping, and well throwing a general tantrum, he made them unfit for consumption.
Wilson’s excitement, enthusiasm, commitment to historic accuracy, and persistence in sharing historic resources, and helping families trace their origins has made a monumental impact in Prince William County and Virginia. By providing a transcript of this one recovered document, we offer researchers, families, and folklorists a unique perspective of early Prince William County history.

hells in wish gate: Caelum, Evernight, WFSM, GG, BM, Miracle Concert
hells in cn wishgate but not global: 4G, 4W, TP
my notes: i was looking into the schedule bc i was telling my assoc friend that we are overdue on reruns and wanted to double check i had my facts straight. i have conclusions bc i take this mobile game more seriously than my actual studies.
its been over a year since MoVo debut and we havent had a rerun. the only other hells that took over a year to get first rerun were 4M (2019Nov-2021Feb) and SoS (2020Jul-2021Aug). its been longer than both for MoVo (2021Jan and counting). MoVo reran in 2022Nov, putting it at almost two years to rerun.
its been almost a year and a half over two years since first rerun of SoS. this is similar to TP (2019Sep-2021Mar) and BM (2020Jul-2022Mar). it hasn't crossed either yet. its crossed both. update: ToL, which debuted two months after SoS, had its second rerun before SoS. SoS finally reran in 2023Sept.
TR and Ark had no hell reruns between them. this hasnt happened since SoS and ToL in 2020, where the schedule was (i think) fucked up by all the collabs they were doing, on top of bringing ToL exactly on anniversary date. update: this repeated with RS and CD.
endnote from the original making of this post: make of all that what u will. or dont. personally the next few months schedule will decide for me if theyre really being stingy with hell reruns, since we have had BM recently and will hopefully be back on track. hopefully. update: as of mid 2023, the schedule seems to be recovering, with one rerun between every two debut hells.

SeiSub Tanabata Fest 2023 Prompts and FAQ
Welcome to SeiSub Tanabata Fest 2023! July 7-13, 2023
It will run from 7 July to 13 July 2023.
Jul 7 DAY 1 - soulmates red thread of fate marriage Jul 8 DAY 2 - stars constellations deities Jul 9 DAY 3 - FREE DAY (choose your own prompt) Jul 10 DAY 4 - longing separation reunion Jul 11 DAY 5 - wishes bamboo tanzaku Jul 12 DAY 6 - promises Milky Way punishment Jul 13 DAY 7 - kimono paper cranes lanterns

Twitter (@SeiSubTanabata) Tumblr (@SeiSubTanabataFest) The AO3 collection is here: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/SeiSub_Tanabata_Fest/profile Can I use a work I’ve already started?

I was hoping to have had my bluebell painting finished by now especially as they are in full bloom at the moment, but unfortunately I haven't done as much painting as I'd have liked this month due to the Easter holidays but I have managed to finish this one which I started back in January, it's of Steephill Cove looking towards Woody Point on the Isle of Wight. I've called it 'Last Light' as it was painted from a photograph that I'd taken about half an hour before sunset back in January. Other news this month... I'm fortunate to have been asked to feature a couple of paintings in 'The Isle of Wight Artists' Calendar' for 2023, it's a lovely calendar that celebrates Isle of Wight landscape artists; the calendar contains artist contact info, local history and event dates, so watch this space. I will also be participating in the new 'East Cowes Indoor Market' at East Cowes Town Hall from 12.30pm - 4.30pm on the following dates: 14th May, 9th July, 17th September and 19th November, the market will have a selection of local producers, artisans and business owners and I will be selling my original artwork, prints and cards, so do pop along if you can. #watercolour #watercolourpainting #mixedmediapainting #pastel #isleofwightart #isleofwightartist #artworkforsale #steephillcove #woodypoint #isleofwight #seascape #coastalpainting #coastalcliffs #lastlight #winterswalk #sunset (at Isle of Wight) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc-JiBzOQ6I/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

11 July 2020 Peter Morris’s Camden Cloud House Approval
The Cloud House is the vision of architect Peter Morris and TV producer Emily Kennedy. This extraordinary fantastical architecture has been approved for small back street in Gospel Oak.
Peter and Emily have applied for permission to demolish their Victorian home in Vicar’s Road and replace it with two houses.
It is an interesting street, very eclectic, and not in a conservation area.
The couple had initially considered remodelling their homewhich dates from around 1880.
It does not function well, suffering from being damp, draughty and extremely difficult to heat.
The Cloud House will incorporate the current building by recycling its bricks to create a herringbone patterned floor.

Why Won’t Anyone Buy the Most Famous Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas?
LAS VEGAS — On Las Vegas Boulevard, nestled between a motel and tattoo parlor, sits what may be the most famous marriage site in the world: A Little White Wedding Chapel.
Charolette Richards, the chapel’s owner and an originator of the 10-minute wedding ceremony, said she has had her hand in more than 50,000 weddings — in the drive-through window alone — since 1991. The weddings of Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins, Bruce Willis, Michael Jordan and Britney Spears rank among her more notable ceremonies.
She is 86, and, after almost seven decades as the queen of the Las Vegas wedding chapel business, Ms. Richards has put her world-famous site up for sale. Her asking price is $12 million. “I’m retiring soon,” she said, with an expression equal parts saddened and relieved.
The chapel, though, has been on the market since April. And the Las Vegas wedding industry is not the business it used to be. Despite the fact that Las Vegas wedding tourism generated an impressive estimate of $2.5 billion in economic activity last year, according to Lynn Goya, the clerk of Clark County, Nev., that number is at least a billion dollars down from the revenue generated at the industry’s height.
“We’re at about half of what we were at our peak,” Ms. Goya said. “We can’t afford to take our No. 1 status for granted.”
Ms. Goya rounds up the numbers when discussing the toll on Las Vegas’s wedding tourism industry at large, which employs more than 10,000 people. There were 74,534 marriages performed in Clark County in 2018, down 42 percent from the record in 2004: 128,238 marriages.
The sale of Las Vegas’s most iconic chapel, that pinnacle of shameless kitsch and Amour Americana, accompanied by fewer people marrying in Las Vegas, presents an obvious question: Can an industry whose hook is being stuck in the past flourish in the future?
Let’s Get Married (Again)
All you need to get married at the chapel, or anywhere in Las Vegas, is $77, a photo ID and be 18 years old. Great Depression-era legislation allowed for hasty lovers to bypass the usual blood tests and waiting periods and get married within a matter of hours.
For 68 years, 365 days a year, Ms. Richards has been the gatekeeper of an industry built on easing elopement. In fact, it was her entrepreneurial ingenuity that led to the creation of the famed one-stop-shop business model, which became the standard on the Strip.
But it’s no secret that marriage rates in the United States have dwindled significantly in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, and that shifting social values coupled with the burdens of student debt have made tying the knot for millennials unfeasible or unappealing, and sometimes both.
“I don’t know what the longevity of the wedding industry is,” said Ron Decar, 61, the owner of the Viva Las Vegas wedding chapel, a three-minute walk down the boulevard. Although he was wearing his full Elvis get-up, complete with a bedazzled jumpsuit and black pompadour, his tone was gravely serious.
“March was the 20th anniversary of our being in business here in this location, doing the exact same thing we did 20 years ago,” Mr. Decar said. The chapel’s numbers and revenue, he said, have been decreasing each year for more than a decade.
At Viva Las Vegas, bells chime as you enter. A smiling face will soon inquire about your theme preference. Egyptian? Hawaiian? Harley? Camelot? Intergalactic?
Peek in on an average day and you are likely to witness Mr. Decar emerge from a vertical coffin to officiate a ceremony in a chapel flooded with fog and tombstones. Gothic is one of the most popular themes.
“How many chapels do you know that fly vampires from the ceiling?” he asked triumphantly. Viva Las Vegas performs 2,500 to 25,000 weddings a year, depending on the year, and Mr. Decar has performed half of those as Elvis, James Bond, the Grim Reaper, the Godfather “or whatever else the customer wants,” he said.
His 40,000-square-foot building is the largest free-standing chapel on the Strip. The flamboyant site, once a hotel, has been converted into a wedding complex, complete with a wig-filled costume shop, a 1950s diner for doo-wop ceremonies, and a prop room filled with artificial flowers and all the spray paints used to color them.
Viva Las Vegas is capitalizing on the current saving grace of the industry: vow-renewal ceremonies, which make up half its business.
The tourism industry markets renewal ceremonies aggressively, as yet another fun Vegas activity, and they are proving to be a sustainable way to maintain numbers at the wedding chapels. If millennials aren’t getting married, the reasoning goes, why not convince Gen Xers and their elders to simply wed again?
“People want to do something fun the second time around,” Mr. Decar said. “You know, people worry what their mom will think, but when you’re renewing, the pressure’s off. It’s all about fun.”
Jamie Richards, 58, who is an owner of Viva Las Vegas (and who is not related to Charolette Richards), said that younger and smaller venues — like the Little Neon Chapel, where wedding prices start at $49 — pose an additional threat to their own survival.
“New chapels downtown are really cutting prices and making it difficult for the established chapels,” Mr. Richards said. “A lot goes into maintaining brick and mortar, compared to, say, a cubicle.”
The ease of becoming an officiant through online sites has lowered the barrier of entry for those able to perform ceremonies. Mobile officiants, unburdened with the high costs of venue maintenance, can offer more competitive prices, pulling crowds from the classics on the Strip.
The Old Bricks and Mortar and Ball and Chain
Back at a Little White chapel, Charolette Richards inched her way across her expansive property, pointing to the many facets of her chapel: a flower shop (once, she said, the biggest flower shop in Las Vegas), a tux and gown rental department, a limousine fleet and multiple marriage sites in addition to the main altar.
Employees buzz around the grounds, juggling a constantly ringing phone with a stream of walk-ins, and solving problems as they arise — the flowers are wrong, the dresses don’t fit, the limo driver’s car broke down.
Unaffected by the chaos, Ms. Richards draws attention to her favorite touches: a mural that depicts frogs kissing, corkscrew-shaped topiaries and a plastic life-size, horse-drawn carriage. “Everything I love is love,” she said.
Her waiting room is filled with a diverse array of couples. A pair in cowboy hats sits beside a man with one leg and his wife-to-be. Across from them stands a same-sex couple next to a pair speaking Mandarin.
Ms. Richards makes her grand entrance and begins distributing her complimentary “Recipe for a Happy Marriage,” which includes “2 heaping cups of kindness,” “4 armfuls of gentleness” and “1 lifetime of togetherness.”
The tour ends at a glowing sign commemorating Blackjack Day, July 7, 2007 — that’s 7/7/07, a record-breaking day in which a Little White Chapel performed 547 wedding ceremonies.
Ms. Richards pointed to it with elation, and then sat beside her assistant, who rattled off a number of challenges to address: the sudden death of a bride, a renewal ceremony for six couples at once, the hazards of putting pearl pins in bouquets. Ms. Richards paused business matters to explain that Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were married in this building several weeks earlier.
The Other Graceland
Dee Dee Duffy, 55, is the owner of Graceland Wedding Chapel, a two-minute drive down the road. She assured a visitor: “We do not do zombie weddings here.”
Rod Musum, 52, the chapel’s vice president, said his chapel is the originator of the Elvis-themed wedding. “We have one of the more quaint, picturesque chapels on the strip,” he said. “We know what our niche is and what we’re good at.”
Their chapel is marked by blue and white gates, exact replicas of the ones outside Graceland. They too are navigating through a lull in the business, but their numbers remain steady.
The bread and butter of the company is a seven-minute Elvis-themed ceremony, which may seem dated. But Ms. Duffy and Mr. Musum attribute their survival of the wedding drought to a personalized approach.
“We never treat couples like numbers,” Ms. Duffy said.
Witness a wedding or 10 there on any given day and you may be surprised to the point of tears by the sincerity of the quickie ceremonies, even in this most saccharine environment.
The Graceland team said that overcoming the quickie stereotype is their greatest challenge. Industry professionals agree that widening global perceptions of Vegas weddings will prove essential in the quest to capture younger markets.
Ms. Duffy and Mr. Musum would like you to know that their weddings are sincere, and that impulsivity contributes to only a fraction of the business.
“Every single day, someone walks in and asks if ‘The Hangover’ was filmed here,” Mr. Musum said. “It’s just not realistic. The business isn’t 24 hours anymore. The graveyard shift ended in 2006, so we rarely get people stumbling in intoxicated, asking to get married.”
“Frankly, it’s illegal to issue a license or marry someone if they’re drunk, otherwise it would be void in a court of law,” said Ms. Goya, the county clerk. “It’s our job to ensure both parties are capable of signing what will likely be the most important legal contract of their lifetime.”
Daniel Vallance, 44, is the director of operations at the Little Church of the West. “We’re a venue that has bookings into 2023,” he said.
The humble structure, modeled after a 19th-century church in an old mining town, was built in 1942 and is thought to be the oldest standing structure on the Strip. The floorboards creaked beneath Mr. Vallance’s feet as he explained the elements of the steady growth of his business, an enviable anomaly in a difficult time.
“People getting married are in their 30s now, which means they have more financial leeway,” Mr. Vallance said. “They don’t want to spend 50 bucks to get married by a fat drunk Elvis. They want something more elegant, and that’s the approach we take and have taken for 76 years.”
Tucked behind vintage candelabras in Little Church of the West are hidden cameras for live-streaming, the mark of a business that has managed to preserve its traditional appeal while adapting to modern demands.
Aside from incorporating cutting-edge technology (Mr. Vallance said he is already looking into virtual reality), the Little Church of the West has made strides to better cater to international couples. The simple act of making its website available in different languages has helped a lot.
“You want to know what the future of the wedding business is?” Mr. Vallance said. “Listen to the brides and be receptive to what they want.”
Venues like the Chapel of the Flowers, the Thunderbird and Paradise Chapel are undergoing major aesthetic renovations. They face the challenge of conveying modernity while maintaining the vintage Vegas feel.
“We want people to know that were changing with the times and responding to the new customer,” Ms. Goya said. “The industry is now working together instead of against each other, because we have an opportunity to redefine a global brand.”
