you know what, I never do these things, but actually I’ve decided I would like to get to know people better! I would like to partake of the mortifying ordeal! I would like to talk about myself for a bit!
ok for the next...let’s say five days I will answer any of these things that people tag me in, or any random personal questions you plop in my ask box. I don’t have an ask meme on hand but just....pick one you’ve seen recently, or make up questions of your own, and I’ll answer. (the answer might be ‘nope that’s private’ but I will answer.) (@ the anon who asked for book recs - I see you, I’ve been thinking of books all day, I’m going to give you SUCH a long answer, I hope you don’t regret your choices bc it WILL be full of gushing)
alright, let’s go!

Last Song: I’m currently listening to “Falcon in the Dive” from the Scarlet Pimpernel musical on loop. I watched one or two Scarlet Pimpernel movies when I was just barely too young to fully get what was going on, and the story’s held an odd but deep-seated place in my heart ever since. A few years ago I found out there’s a musical and most of the songs are pretty stellar (go listen to “Madame Guillotine” if you like big ensemble broadway numbers, it’s a banger, the bit where he cries out for God has been running through my mind on and off for a few days now haha not like that’s topical or anything), so every once in a while I spend a few days listening to them a lot.
Sometime last year I read the actual book, and got super into the whole concept of the Scarlet Pimpernel for a while. I plotted out Pimpernel aus for several fandoms, I read the entire wikipedia article, and I went looking for bootlegs of the musical. I didn’t find one, but I did find a full radioplay-style recording of the script, complete with full musical numbers, and listened to it like a podcast.
Reader, I was so disappointed. The play adds some scenes, bc a lot of the dramatic tension of the novel comes from internal conflict and that doesn’t stage super well, and the very first scene of this play – a play written in the NINETIES – features our dashing hero rescuing some aristocrats from a French prison, and then saying to the person in the next cell, who begs for rescue but is not an aristocrat, “We have enough of your kind in England.”
Enough! of your KIND! What in the merry frickety HECK my dudes!! The book has some rather unfortunate™ takes but it is from 1905, it’s regrettable but sadly to be expected. This play is from 1997. It has NO excuse. This scene wasn’t even in the book! What! the heck!
I was so disheartened that I lost my excitement for the play, and a couple songs later I stopped listening. It occurred to me just a few days ago that you could actually stage that ironically, with the person in the cell giving the audience a “can you believe this” look, and then the rest of the play could feature assorted non-aristocratic ensemble members constantly looking at the audience like they’re on The Office. And hey, maybe that’s what they did, or something similar – maybe that was never meant to be taken as a cleanly heroic stance, and the play deals with it in a complex way. It’s possible. I wouldn’t know. Kinda doubt it though, based on song lyrics.
Favorite Color: red, probably
Last Movie: I watched that new lesbian christmas movie with my family for christmas, the one with kirsten stewart and the guy from schitt’s creek. it’s very sweet and good and kinda sad, and I really enjoyed it. it also incidentally has the best gay best friend trope in probably anything ever, bc it’s not a trope (I didn’t realize until several hours after watching that it technically fits), it’s just a guy who is the protagonist’s best friend, and they’re just all gay, and then when he Gives Relationship Advice as a gay best friend always does, it’s advice about how to deal with your partner’s hangups around coming out.
actually every part of the gay best friend trope becomes better when they’re just best friends who are both gay. the big dramatic gestures (in this case, driving some ungodly distance in the snow on no notice) go from “haha how kooky” to “queer man will do anything he needs to to rescue his queer friend from an isolating & potentially triggering situation”. the relationship advice isn’t “honey you deserve some self-respect, treat yourself”, it’s a deeply sincere reminder of the vulnerability that is shared across almost everyone’s queer experience, and look I could ramble about this for a long time before reaching a coherent point but I’m INTO IT, okay? I’m into it.
Last Show: you want me to remember what show I last finished???? impossible, cannot be done, it was a long time ago and the adhd has eaten everything that happened before last week. here, instead I’ll tell you about another movie I watched, late at night with my mom in cozy companionship just a couple days ago. it’s called Quigley Down Under and it’s about a cowboy who goes to Australia and kills a bunch of racists, 10/10 would watch again. it’s from 1990 but it feels much older, with the music choices and the cinematography of a 70s Western. the cowboy is great, honorable and fearless and kind, but the breakaway star of this movie for me is the woman who attaches herself to his side and refuses to leave. her name is Cora, and she’s crazy, in the sense that she’s not altogether tethered to reality, but this never for a second diminishes her agency. she’s fierce and clever and compassionate, and she basically never does anything she doesn’t want to in the whole movie. her arc is about overcoming trauma by taking charge of her own fear and facing it head-on, she is never belittled or dismissed by the narrative or the protagonist, and look she’s just so cool. I love her. she’s so vibrantly alive. her story could probably have been handled with a bit more nuance, but honestly for the 90s it’s pretty great. I’m no expert, but I found nothing objectionable in it, just a bit of heavy-handedness.
anyway the theme of the movie is that racism is evil and racists deserve to be shot, and this too could have been handled better (not a single aboriginal character speaks a single line of english in this movie), but it follows through on that message in every way, while still being a fun kinda campy cowboy movie. overall a very good time.
Currently Watching: started showing my sister Hilda the other day, and she’s liking it! I love that show, it’s so incredibly cute. can’t wait to see season 2
Currently Reading: lmao I wish. lately the brain has firmly rejected all attempts to read anything of any length. currently pending, bc I was halfway through them when my brain stalled out, are tano’s fic What Does Kill You Can Make You Stronger, Too, a Toby Daye book - I think it was The Brightest Fell, I got like half a chapter in and haven’t picked it up in over a month, the Locked Tomb series, and probably a few other things too. ooh! also a book called Making Sex by thomas laqueur, which is my fancy academic reading that I’ve been doing in short bursts for the past year or two when I feel fancy and academic. it’s about the development of the concept of biological sex and of gender in Western society, and it’s fascinating. has among other things introduced me to the idea that until quite recently, fathers were a matter of faith. the mother? yeah, you can watch the baby pop out, we all know who the mother is. but the father? how can you know? how can you really know? we have paternity tests these days, but for all of human history up until now, we've just had to take fatherhood on faith. (not to mention we didn’t even know what fathers were contributing to the production of a fetus. clearly it was something, since you can’t get pregnant without a penis getting involved, but we have literally not known what until the past few decades. and that is wild. it has colored ALL of human history, all of our conceptions of society and family and kinship and gender, all of it, and it hadn’t even occurred to me until it was spelled out for me in this book, and it’s just......wow.
Salty, sweet or savory: for christmas my sister and I made seven different types of cookie, most of them involving chocolate somehow.
Craving: no bc I ate so many cookies. unless sleep counts. or maybe pringles, it’s been many moons since last I had a potato chip and I miss them.
Coffee or Tea: no thank you
Tagging: @coloursisee, @krchy-tuna, @sam-j-squirrel, @xzienne, @mirandatam, @viciousmaukeries, @sepulchritude, @elidyce, and @navigatorsnorth bc it’s been a while since we’ve talked, and I’m super hyped that you’re married now. v happy for you!

6 reasons why Digital Marketers should NOT ignore Gamification
For the uninitiated, gamification is most commonly defined as “…an informal umbrella term for the use of video game elements in non-gaming systems to improve user experience (UX) and user engagement…”. (1)
Brian Burke, Research Vice President at Gartner, in a podcast defines gamification further as “The use of game mechanics and experience design to digitally engage and motivate people to achieve their goals…it’s the use of game mechanics… and uses things like points and badges and leader boards… It is used in a digital engagement model” (2)
Let’s take a look at the 6 reasons why marketers must consider gamification in their digital strategy. (It's a long read but I promise it will be fun!)
Reason 1: Let’s accept it – gamification is not ‘just a fad’
Tumblr media
The last decade has seen interest in gamification rise substantially. Growth in digital technologies has further propelled this interest across sectors like Healthcare, Real-estate, Education, and other sectors. Today, mobile technology is using game mechanics combined with UX design to enhance user engagement, aid employee learning, help students with problem-solving, and even help sales personnel reach their targets.
Reason 2: Gamification is everywhere, literally!
The earliest, less refined, version of gamification in marketing was recorded in 1896 (3) when retailers rewarded loyal customers with stamps received from marketers. By 2020, one can comfortably say that gamification in marketing has come a long way.
“It (Gamification) can be applied on many products, services, or any stage of the customer journey and it’s easily adjusted to any budget” (4)
Today, Gamification is seamlessly incorporated in our favorite digital platforms like Google Pay, Fitbit, and even Linkedin. It is common to see a mobile app use badges, points, or virtual currency to drive user engagement. While there are popular applications that have gamification at their core like Duolingo and Nike Run Club, there are apps like Zomato which have incorporated gamification into their product to keep app users coming back for more.
Tumblr media
In 2019, Zomato launched Zomato Premier League during the IPL season. Users could predict a winner of the IPL cricket match of the day and gain 30% cashback if they predicted the winner correctly. Zomato released a scorecard of the activity that showed 224 cities and 14 Million predictions achieved during the IPL season. (5)
(On a separate note, Google decided to ruin the game and sent a notice to Zomato citing Play store policy violation – Zomato had to take off this feature in September 2020) (6)
Reason 3: Your digital audience wants to have fun
“Many brands don’t need brand awareness anymore, they already have it. So they’re looking at what’s next, they want to engage the audience, the influencers.” (7)
Digital marketers need not limit themselves to using gamification only in an app – digital engagement can be successfully created wherever the audience is including social media! Micro-gamification moments have been popular on social media platforms for some time now. One example of the micro-gamification moment is Stories Ordering by Burger King.
Tumblr media
Burger King Spain used Instagram stories and had some fun with gamification. With “Stories Ordering” followers could pick ingredients and customize their Whoppers by simply clicking on the Instagram Poll Feature. This generated a unique coupon that participants could use to redeem their Whopper for free. A simple creative idea with zero media investment led to 270000 brand interactions.
Similarly, Star Movies launched Play @ 7 (8) to gamify the TV watching experience. Viewers were required to watch the movies played on the channel daily and play 7 games by tweeting the correct answers to the games. Star Movies created a leader-board on Twitter in real-time where participants could track their progress daily and weekly.
Reason 4: Personalise to Gamify and Gamify to personalize
“While the job of gamification is easing the daily tasks in different fields, the users’ interests and likes must be considered to create intrinsic incentives and a moral environment for them.” (9)
Tumblr media
For a truly effective retention strategy, a brand must enhance the product experience for the user. For this ethically collecting relevant data along the user journey to personalize content and keep users engaged becomes important. Duolingo emails a weekly report to its users reminding them of their progress in comparison to the previous week. Similarly, Starbucks sends rewards points as a birthday treat to its users.
As the collected data gets richer in quality, marketers can then create loyalty programs, feedback mechanisms, gamified content, and much more, to personalize the user’s experience further.
Reason 5: Gamified marketing survived COVID-19
Locked up at home due to COVID-19, people were increasingly active online, consuming a variety of content, and playing games when not working. Between March 2020 and April 2020, comScore noted a 62% increase in the time spent on playing games online in India. Another report states that the US and UK saw a ‘40% surge in the time spent on online games’.
During this time, Burberry launched its summer collection through a gamified campaign. The luxury brand created a multiplayer game “that lets players dress up their characters in the brand's outfits before grabbing a surfboard and challenging friends to a race around a track”. The game rewards participants with daily prizes and AR-based digital rewards. (10)
Tumblr media
ABC Entertainment decided to have fun promoting its classic TV game show “Supermarket Sweep”. To announce the return of the show, the broadcaster launched a Twitter game “Supermoji Sweep”. The audience on Twitter was required to “reply to its @SuperSweepABC account with combinations of nine emoji for grocery items including cheese, bread, steak, turkey and cherries”. Every emoji had a secret dollar value attached to it and the audience was required to guess the combination of items that would cost exactly $20. And the reward for the correct guess? A Special video message from comedian Leslie Jones, who is also the host of the show.
Reason 6: Gamification is about to get better
The overall Gamification market globally is expected to be worth $76298.9 Mn by 2030 (11) and for marketers, the opportunities are endless. Game mechanics are combined with AR/VR in education, tourism, healthcare, and entertainment industries.
Tumblr media
In 2019, Ally Bank used AR and Gamification to create an online learning experience for consumers. “The augmented reality game brings Monopoly to life in six USA cities… Ally aims to improve consumers’ financial literacy through gamification while giving them the chance to increase their savings and win prizes."
Tumblr media
PetSmart used Snapchat’s AR feature to create a “gamified quiz based around educational reptile facts”. Using this feature users could use the filter to turn themselves into a reptile, answer questions related to reptiles, and win a 40% discount coupon that can be redeemed at a PetSmart store. As a result, PetSmart “has seen a 50% increase in reptile sales, as well as a boost in general pet sales as owners stocked up on food and supplies in preparation for lockdown..”
Digital marketers can leverage these technologies to present immersive and gamified experiences to consumers and expand the scope of digital marketing. Similarly, brands can work towards gathering relevant user data and utilize it to create a better user experience and consumer engagement through personalized in-app gamified experiences.
Parting Thoughts
From engagement to retention, gamification can support most of the marketing objectives. This is a great approach ONLY if the marketer is clear about what objective the brand is trying to achieve when adopting the approach. To elevate a user’s experience through gamification, marketers must weave storytelling or personalization.
But remember, creating a gamified experience is not easy. Experts have researched why gamification fails and these reasons range from lack of understanding of the target audience to not being able to create a compelling story. Brian Burke mentions that gamification fails when it is used to manipulate the user’s experience to meet the organization’s goal, instead of the goal of the customer (2). As a result, marketers must create an experience that helps the consumer achieve their objectives. And this means going beyond mere reward points.
I will leave you with two popular frameworks Elemental Game Tetrad Model by Schell and Octalysis Framework by Yu-kai Chou. Both these should help you start off with planning and designing an outstanding gamification experience for your audiences/customers/users!

Art of Immersion Response
I distinctly remember when the Rugrats “Go Wild” movie came out in theatres in 2003 that integrate worlds from Rugrats and the Wild Thornberry’s. Printed advertisements on burger king meals and commercials on Nickelodeon promoted the new wild movie coming to a theatre near you. You would think it was so amped to see the movie because I loved the cartoon, which I did but that wasn’t the main reason why I wanted to be there. Ultimately, it was because of the blue interactive scratch and sniff ticket I received with my burger king kids meal. If you got a chance to get your hands on of those tickets, then you were able to be a part of the movie. Each ticket had six circles with icons, you could scratch off and sniff whenever the movie prompted you to at the right bottom corner of the screen. You could hear a room full of kids saying, “EEEWWWWW”, after scratching and smelling the sticky feet circle that related to one of the characters. Or hear kids saying, “MMMMmmmm”, when smelling the peanut butter circle.
Not that I haven’t experience great advertising like this were merchandise was sold to my mom to correspond with my favorite T.V show. It wasn’t until then that I had an interactive experience with a movie and a large audience. Even though my 8-year-old experience seems minutiae compared to the Why So Serious? example mentioned in the text. Both movies let their audiences be a part of the film. The Why So Serious? experience allowed for more than 10 million people to be a part of puzzles, treasure hunts, and riddles leading up to The Dark Knight movie (Rose, 2012). I must say this great advertising and way to build an audience for such an amazing movie. Since we have expanded our understand of technology through the internet, AI technology, and virtual reality games, it has changed how we interact with media. This change has also led us into more ways of teaching media literacy and new art in a classroom setting.
Rose sates that, “…immersiveness is what blurs the line, not just between story and game, but between story and marketing, storyteller and audience, illusion and reality” (2012). Through each example in the text it becomes apparent that people like to be a part of the creation. Having an interaction with the medium creates a much more solid connection for audiences and better understanding. I am a visual and interactive learner. The more I am able to visualize concepts and use my hands with lessons, the more I want to engage with what I’m learning. Art has the power of interactivity and images no longer have to be still. Audiences can now be a part of the artwork and leave their mark. For example, Borel explains audiences were able to engage with student work at an art exhibition by scanning QR codes attach to each art work. The students lead their audience to leave critiques, ask questions, and even some led them on a scavenger hunt (2016). Through this process students were able to understand the proper use of QR tags and how to interact with an audience through theses tags while their audience was able to be a part of the exhibition.
One thing I thought worth mentioning was how the game Dungeons & Dragons created a way of communication for a severely dyslexic student. The game allowed Jordan to create his own kind of story and instead of having to read, he could act out his story (Rose, 2012). Games and media like this create multiple ways of communication for students, especially students will exceptionalities. Educators can take a note from this game. As an educator we have a responsible for making lessons with a universal design to fit all abilities. Without the creator of Dungeons & Dragons knowing how effective keeping the story open for others to create, it opened a new set of communication for a different group of gamers. Jordan was so inspired by the stories he could create that he eventually started his own company that created storytelling games.
We are now in a technology era where it is important to educate our children with the times. We are able to teach our students how to create through technology. Kafai and Peppler explain how designing games is one of the most popular DIY approaches for students. In their study, they focused on using software production tool called Scratch to help students make their own games, interactive art, digital stories, and more. Through this software students were able to understand artistic concepts like color, movement, visual design, audio production, etc. Students were also able to think visibly through their design and production process (2011).
Now that most schools have gone virtual due to the coronavirus, it has changed our whole dynamic on teaching students. We now have to rely on technology heavily. I am glad that before COVID hit that we already had platforms to help educate students. The point that we had google classroom was already an amazing alternative for holding class. Even though we are not in person, we can still have two-way communication through google meet and zoom. We can also provide information by creating power point presentations, providing articles, and videos for students to learn from. Students can also respond via video, text, and even audio. Times like this has made educators become even more creative when coming up with lesson. I have been letting my K-5 graders submit work through Autodraw.com. This website acts as a digital sketchpad for students and helps then draw their responses out. My middle schools have also been using Canva.com as a kid-friendly photoshop tool. They have been making comics and posters.
Overall technology has changed the world around us, we are more connected than ever before. We use it as a way to interact with other from places all around the world. Its emergence is a valuable tool for educators and students. Yet, we also have to think about students with no accessibility to the internet and how that affects their learning and participation with their community. During COVID, will they fall behind from struggling with learning new technology and the new dynamics of the classroom? Will students with exceptionalities be neglected during time like this? How are they being assisted? What are the long-term effects of having instruction majorly online?

Pepsi is Okay Review
Tumblr media
Welcome to Sekere's first Podcast, On this first episode the Sekere Team and our hosts will be sharing their opinions on the Pepsi is Okay ad. https://soundcloud.com/user-243775710/pepsi-is-okay-ad-review Below is a transcript of the podcast Christiana: Hello welcome to Sekere news first ever podcast my name is Christiana and I'm from Sekere news. I'll be your host today and with me here are my 3 guest hosts Imoh, Tolu and Semira. Christiana: Imoh is the head of communications at an advertising agency, Semira is a content developer at a communications firm while Tolu is a client relations officer at an advertising agency. Today will be reviewing Pepsi Okay Ad. Christiana: The Pepsi Okay Ad is Pepsi’s official advert for the Super Bowl.  It stars Steve Carell, Young John and Cardi B. Christiana: In the ad, Steve Carell, Cardi B and Young John make a case for why Pepsi is more than ok.  If you haven't seen the ad then, Please visit Sekere News.com, search for Pepsi is Okay review to watch the ad…to watch the full ad. Christiana: So let’s hear from our guest hosts to see what they think about the ad...Semira Semira: Thank you very much for having me on the show.  First of all, I will like to say it is a step up for Pepsi in comparison to the last ad with Kendall Jenner, the controversial ad. They were trying to do so much in that ad and then, they ended up sending a message that was not authentic. Semira: So for this ad, I felt that it was very straight to the point, the messaging was very concise and it resonated with a lot of people. You know when you want to get something and you are trying to place an order for something and obviously the thing... The common thing to say is... Is that Okay? Is that what you will like to have? And then the message was trying to say that Pepsi is more than just ok. Semira: And yes obviously the use of celebrities for the ad was very on point. Strong messaging, very concise, straight to the point and overall was a good ad. Christiana: Alright, Imoh what do you think about it? Imoh: Hi… Good afternoon, thanks for having me on your show. I feel the ad had a strong message and they put out their brand voice in terms of communication, the message was direct. Imoh: They did what they could to reaffirm the message in the minds of their audience also we can't ignore the subtle jab at Coca Cola and the ad had a strong vibe which can spread easily among everyone. It's something you want to share among your friends, so it’s an ad that will move easily around our culture and would stick with you Christiana: Alright, Tolu what do you think? Tolu: Thanks Christiana for having me on the show. Christiana: You are welcome. Tolu: I think just like my fellow people have said, I think the ad is great, I think it is concise just like Semira said. I think it's a new one, it is a different one from Pepsi but I would also say that I don’t agree with the part where they threw shade at Coca Cola.  Though it wasn't mentioned fully Coca Cola… Coke, but we all know the brand that we can resonate with that bears Coke is Coca Cola. Tolu: But Asides that… Awesome... I am a big fan of Cardi B, so yeah… it is a great one Christiana: Okay…Personally, I like the ad, I like the use of celebrity endorsements, I felt that they used it very well. They used the... I don’t think anybody has ever thought about using Cardi B’s iconic Okurr in such a positive and creative way. Christiana: It was very entertaining, I like the messaging, as Semira said the messaging was very concise. It was clear and it was a great ad all in all, very memorable. I feel like everybody, it had everybody talking on social media. Everyone was talking about it, it was funny, it was witty, it had everything a good ad should have. Christiana: So I think we should rate the ad, on a scale of 1 to 10. What do you think….What rating will you give it? Christiana: Tolu Tolu: I will rate it 7 Christiana: Okay Imoh Imoh: I will give it an 8 Christiana: Okay Semira Semira: I think a 6, simply because I felt like they could have done more with the use of celebrity endorsement and because it was centred a lot on Cardi B, I felt like people that are not… Although she is like brand ambassador, so it kind of made sense to use her Semira: But if I am not a huge fan of Cardi B, I would definitely be a little bit biased about the ad and would definitely not want to patronize the brand just because Cardi B was the centre of the advertisement. So they could have used more celebrities and not let it be centred on that character… So yeah… that’s it. Christiana: Okay… I would give it a 7 Christiana: Back to the ad, I think the reason why Cardi B seems to be the centre of the ad is because Cardi is the most relevant person when it comes to pop culture currently. You have Steve Carell whose Office days are over, you can’t really state a movie he just did presently. Young John… which song has he sang recently but Cardi B is the most popular person currently. So that's why she is most likely the centre. Semira: Okay… I understand that but as I was saying, for people who are not exactly huge fans of Cardi B, they would not necessarily be very excited about the ad. I am not a huge fan of Cardi B, I’ll be honest… I mean I liked the ad it was very catchy but that’s not going to change my decision to want to try the brand just because she’s the face of the ad. So yeah, it won’t influence my decision based on that... That’s my opinion anyway. Christiana: Okay… So we will like to hear from our listeners to find out what they think about our review and what they think about the ad, so leave a comment below. Thank you very much for listening. https://youtu.be/9sYElEbRzKA Read the full article

Learning to Re-Share: 4 Strategies to Renew, Refresh, and Recycle Content for Bigger Reach
Posted by  jcar7   In the nearly three years the MeetEdgar blog went live, we’ve published more than 250 posts, written over 300,000 words, searched for hundreds of .gifs, and used our own tool to share our content 2,600 times to over 70,000 fans on social media.
After all that work, it seems silly to share a post just once. Nobody crumples up an oil painting and chucks it in the trash after it’s been seen one time — and the same goes for your content.
You’ve already created an “art gallery” for your posts.  Resharing  your content just lets the masses know what you’ve got on display. Even if hundreds or thousands of people have seen it all before, there’s always someone new to your content.
In a social media landscape that’s constantly changing, building a solid foundation of evergreen content that can be shared and shared again should be a key part of your social media strategy.
Otherwise, your art gallery is just another building in the city.
But wait… aren’t we supposed to be writing fresh content?   Yes! One of the biggest misconceptions about resharing is that it’s a spammy tactic. This is just not true — provided that you’re resharing responsibly. We’ll explain how to do that in just a moment.
Resharing actually does double-duty for your brand. It not only gets the content that you spent your valuable time creating in front of more eyeballs (and  at optimal times , if you want to get fancy), it also frees you up to have more authentic, real-time social interactions that drive people to your site from social media — since you’ve got content going out no matter what.
Did we mention that  resharing is good for SEO ? Moz Blog readers know that the more people engage with a post, the better your blog or site looks to search engines. And that’s only one facet of the overall SEO boost (and traffic boost!) resharers can see.
How resharing impacts SEO   Big brands are probably the most prolific content resharers. Heck, they don’t even  think twice  about it:
BuzzFeed is a perfect example of the value of repeating social updates, because they don’t necessarily NEED to.
So why do they do it anyway? Because it gets results.
Social sharing  alone has an impact on SEO, but   social engagement   is really where it’s at. Quality content is totally worth the up-front time and cost, but only if it gets engagement!  You up your chances of engagement with your content if you simply up your content’s exposure. That’s what resharing does awesomely.
With literally zero tweaks to the content itself, BuzzFeed made each of those social posts above double in value. Chances are, the people who saw these posts the first time they were shared are not the same people who saw them when they were reshared.
But simply resharing social posts isn’t the only way to get more engagement with your content.  This post covers how companies large and small do resharing right, and highlights some of the best time-saving content strategies you can implement for your brand right now.
1 - Start at the source: Give old posts a new look  Lots has changed in five years — the world got three new  Fast & Furious  movies and LKR Social Media  transformed  from a consulting service into social media automation software.
We’ve done the math: three months is one Internet year and five years is basically another Internet epoch. (This may be a slight exaggeration.) So when we transferred some of our founder’s older evergreen blog posts to the new MeetEdgar blog, we took stock of which of those posts had picked up the most organic traffic.
One thing that hadn’t changed in five years? A blog post about how  Vin Diesel was winning the social media game  was still insanely popular with our readers:
Writing blog posts with an eye toward making them as evergreen as possible is one of the smartest, most time-saving-est content marketing strategies out there.
There weren’t a ton of tweaks to make, but we gave this popular post some love since so many people were finding it. We pepped up the headline, did a grammar and content rundown, refreshed links and images, updated social share buttons, and added more timely content. The whole process took less time than writing a brand new post, and we got to share it with tens of thousands of followers who hadn’t seen it when it was originally published.
So... check your metrics! Which evergreen posts have performed the best over time? Which have lots of awesome organic traffic? Make a list,  do a content audit , and start updating!
2 - Find your social sharing “sweet spot” by repackaging your content   When you read studies that say many social media users reshare social posts  without ever clicking through to the content itself … it can be a little disheartening.
  Okay, a LOT disheartening.
You’ve probably spent tons of time creating your content, and the thought that it’s not getting read NEARLY as often as it could be is a recipe for content marketing burnout. (We’ve all been there.)
But it’s not all for naught — you might just need to experiment until you find the “sweet spot” that gets people to read and share. One way to do that is to simply repackage content you’ve already written.
The tried-and-true “best of” post offers a reprieve from the content-creation grind while still delivering tons of value to your fans and readers.
Repackaging is best when it  reframes your content  with a new focus — like rounding up similar posts based on a theme. (You can do this  in reverse , too, and turn one great post into a bunch of fresh content to then share and reshare!)
If you can get people to your site, a “best of” post encourages readers to stay longer as they click links for the different articles you’ve gathered up, and engage with content they may never have thought to look up separately.
Most fun of all, you can repackage your content to target new or different subsets of your audience on social media. (More on that in the next section.)
3 - Social shake-up: Reaching and testing with different audiences  “What if the same person recognizes something that I’ve already posted in the past?” you might be asking right about now. “I don’t want to annoy my followers! I don’t want to be spammy!”
Forget about people resharing social posts without reading the content behind the links —  most people  don’t see your social posts  at all in the first place.
This is just one of those uncomfortable facts about the Internet, like how comment sections are always a minefield of awful, and how everyone loves a good startled cat .gif.
That doesn’t mean you should repeat yourself, word-for-word, all the time. Chances are, you have more than one type of reader or customer, so it’s important not just to vary your content, but also to vary  how you   share it on social media .
Savvy marketers are all over this tactic, marketing two sides (or more) of the same coin. Here are a couple of examples of social sharing images from a  Mixpanel blog post :
     Option A
     Option B
Both Option A and Option B go to the same content, but one highlights a particularly juicy stat (problem statement: “97% of users churn”) and the other hits the viewer with an intriguing subheader (solution statement: “behavior-based messaging”). In this way, Mixpanel can find out what pulls in the most readers and tweak and promote that message as needed.
Pull a cool anecdote from your post or highlight a different stat that gets people excited. It can be as easy as changing up the descriptions of your posts or just using different images. There’s so much to test and try out — all using the same post.
4 - Automate, automate, automate  Remember,  your best posts are only as good as the engagement they get.  That fact, however, doesn’t mean you have to keep manually resharing them on social media day in and day out.
Unless, of course, you’re into that boring busywork thing.
Automating the whole process of resharing evergreen content saves tons of time while keeping your brand personality intact. It also frees you up to have real-time interactions with your fans on social media, brainstorm new post ideas, or just go for a walk, and it  solves the time crunch  and the hassle of manually re-scheduling posts, while actually showcasing  more  of your posts across the massive social media landscape. Just by spacing out your updates, you’ll be able to hit a wider range of your followers.
(This is probably a good time to check whether your social media scheduling tool offers automatic resharing of your content.)
Now, social media automation isn’t a substitute for consistently creating great new content, of course, but it does give your existing evergreen content an even  better  opportunity to shine.
Win with quality, get things DONE with resharing  It’s noisy out there. The law of diminishing returns — as well as declining social reach — means that a lot of what you do on social media can feel like shouting into the void.
And there’s not a huge ROI for shouting into voids these days.
Responsible resharing is an important part of your overall content marketing strategy. As long as you keep your content fresh, create new quality content regularly, and talk to your fans  where and when they’re most active , chances are people won’t see the same thing twice. The data shows you’ll get more clicks, more traffic, and better SEO results — not a bad bonus to that whole “saving lots of time” thing.

Netflix vs Stan, Foxtel Now and Amazon Prime: Australian streaming services compared
UPDATE: Stan has raised the price of its Premium package, which will now set you back $17 a few months- that& apos; s a$ 2 increase from the tier& apos; s original $15 monthly fee. Updated article below.
Now that streaming media has become a mainstay in Australian homes, Aussies have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to get their home amusement fix.
When blended, Netflix, Stan , Amazon Prime Video and Foxtel Now offer an enormous range of content that can be instantly streamed into your home. However, if you can only afford one subscription service, narrowing down a definitive choice can be harder than it seems.
As each service brings with it a unique range of television shows and movies aimed at different segments of the streaming audience , not to mention differing price points, device compatibility and streaming qualities, we& apos; ve taken it upon ourselves bring you an in-depth guide to what you can expect from Australia& apos; s four major SVOD platforms.
With the constantly evolving nature of each service discussed in this guide, we will endeavour to keep you updated on any significant changes and updates that may occur to these streaming giants in the future.
Here& apos; s how the Australian streaming situation stacks up in 2019.
The best VPN for Netflix 2019 Price
Probably the best thing about having so many streaming alternatives to choose from, is that it forces-out each service to be priced competitively.
Netflix offers the cheapest river of the main three, with a single creek in standard definition at $9.99, which, if we& apos; re is sincere, isn& apos; t especially good value, but may appeal to those who live alone and have a poor quality internet connection.
Thankfully, for $13.99 a month you can get a dual-stream subscription that offers HD streaming quality.
If 4K rivers are what you& apos; re after, you& apos; ll need to subscribe to Netflix& apos; s premium package, which costs $17.99 a few months and allows you to watch the service on four devices simultaneously. This is probably the most ideal subscription for families with differing tastes in proves and movies.
Though Netflix is obviously run off of how it& apos; s priced overseas, Stan has chosen to come out at the low , no-nonsense cost of $10 a few months. That& apos; s for everything the service has to offer at a maximum resolution of 1080 p.
If you want to make use of your 4K TV though, you can upgrade to a Premium Stan subscription for the new cost of $17 a few months, which is a slight increase from its original $15 monthly fee.
So far, Stan has a steadily growing 4K content lineup, including demonstrates like Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Preacher and Wolf Creek, and movies like Ghostbusters, Taxi Driver, Arrival and Sam Raimi& apos; s Spider-Man trilogy.
These kinds of costs cut straight to the point- once you& apos; ve tested the service& apos; s 30 day trial, you& apos; re either on board with forking over a tenner( or an extra fiver) each month, or you& apos; re not.
Undercutting Netflix& apos; s pricing substantially, Amazon has a special introductory offer that grants new subscribers access to the service for a monthly fee $4.99 for the first six months, after which it will renew at US $6.99 each month after that.
Foxtel Now is different in that it offers a number of different content packs( split into Starter packs and Premium packs) so the user can tailor their subscription to their viewing habits.
The minimum cost for Foxtel Now has been increased to $ 25 per month, which includes the Pop and Lifestyle packs.
You& apos; ll probably have to sign up to at least a couple of packs to get a decent selection of indicates overall. As we& apos; ve already mentioned, Lifestyle and Pop are now bundled together, while the individual Kids and Doco packages have been scrapped wholly — if you want that content back, you& apos; ll have to pony up for the $104 All Packs bundle.
Thankfully, the Drama package is still around, and is still priced at $15 per month( though you& apos; ll get$ 5 off when you sign up ).
The Movies pack will still define you back $20 a month and the Sport package remains unchanged at $29 per month. Seeing as you& apos; re obligated to sign up to the Pop and Lifestyle packs, the minimum expense for watching sports on Foxtel Now has been raised to $54 per month.
Devices
For many people, the rulings of which streaming service to sign up for may come down to the devices they own.
Netflix has the biggest global reach and has been around the longest, which is why it can be streamed on the largest number of devices.
The Netflix app is available on a wide range of smart TVs from manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic, Philips and Hisense, though you should check your television model to see if the service is supported. Stan is available on all current Samsung smart TVs, Sony smart-alecky TVs( running Android TV) and all LG smart-alecky TVs operating WebOS software.
Stan is also streaming on Hisense smart TVs from 2015 onwards, and we& apos; re considering the app pop up on more and more manufacturers defines. Basically, if you buy a new smart TV locally, chances are that it will play Stan.
At launch, Amazon Prime Video merely offered its service in Australia through computer browsers, however, the Amazon Prime app has now appeared on a number of 4K smart TVs, including models from Sony, Samung, LG and more. Before settling on Prime, you should check and see if you smart Tv has an app for it.
If your smart-alecky TV is of the 4K/ UHD variety, opportunities are that its Netflix app supportings 4K streaming. You can also get a 4K Netflix stream for the latest wave of Ultra HD Blu-ray players, such as the Panasonic DMP-UB9 00 and the Samsung UBD-K8 500. Microsoft& apos; s newest console, the Xbox One S, also offers 4K playback.
The Apple TV also supports Netflix and has features built around service, such as the ability to use Siri to search for titles by voice, which places Netflix titles appear alongside iTunes listings. A Stan app is also available for Apple TV, but Amazon won& apos; t allow its app on Apple TV or Chromecast for business reasons. With that said, you should be able to showing Amazon Prime Video on your Apple TV through AirPlay. So far, Siri functionality is only available to Netflix.
Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime Video are all available on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, though some older Android models may not be compatible.
When it comes to game consoles, Netflix has the biggest reach, with apps for Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, PS3, PS4 and the Nintendo Wii U. Stan has most of the consoles covered but absences support for Xbox 360 and Wii U.
It& apos; s also possible to watch Amazon Prime Video on home gaming consoles, including the Xbox One and PS4, and you can also watch the service utilize Amazon& apos; s Fire TV Stick.
Netflix and Stan are also available on Fetch TV, which is quite handy for the hundreds of thousands of Australians currently subscribed to Fetch.
If you don& apos; t have any of the TV-connected devices listed above and still want to watch Netflix and Stan on your television, the two services can also be streamed to a Google Chromecast, which ostensibly provides regular TVs with smart-alecky Tv functionality( so long as you have a smartphone or tablet to stream from ). That said, Amazon Prime Video is not supported on Chromecast.
Foxtel Now was working on iOS and Android devices, Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra, PC and Mac and the newly-released Foxtel Now streaming box. Eventually, you can also watch Netflix and Stan on the Roku 2-powered Telstra TV media streaming box.
Kids content
When it comes to children demonstrates and movies, each service has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Stan has a wide selection of children-friendly shows that mostly stem from its partnerships with Turner Broadcasting( the Cartoon Network ), the ABC and Viacom.
And , now that Stan is Disney& apos; s new home for streaming content in Australia, subscribers now have access to an enormous library of classic movies from Disney and Pixar, such as the Toy Story trilogy, Finding Nemo, Frozen, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and more, along with a wide selection of Disney Channel TV shows.
Cartoon Network favourites like Adventure Time, Ben 10, Regular Show, The Powerpuff Girls, Cow and Chicken, Generator Rex and Ed, Edd, n Eddy are all ready to stream on Stan.
Likewise, classic ABC titles like The Wiggles, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Guess How Much I Love You and Justine Clarke, as well as overseas titles like Octonauts, Angelina Ballerina, Bob the Builder, Thomas and Friends, Fireman Sam, Sesame Street and Mister Maker are available to stream on the app, and its Viacom deal brings with it a large range of indicates from Nickelodeon and Nick Jr, like Avatar: The Last Airbender; Octonauts, Ni Hao, Kai-Lan, Bubble Guppies, and popular live-action shows like iCarly, VICTORiOUS, and Drake& Josh.
Like the rest of Amazon Prime Video& apos; s content library, its Kids selection is quite sparse at present. You& apos; ll find a number of Amazon Original kids shows you& apos; ve probably never heard of, like Wishenpoof !, Tumble Leaf and Just Add Magic, alongside some tried-and-true children movies classics, like The Little Rascals, Casper, Spy Kids and Babe.
Animation fans will be happy to know that Netflix has also rendered some original depicts based on classic DreamWorks properties, including Puss in Boots and How to Train Your Dragon.
Deals with other big children& apos; s program distributors Saban, DHX Media and Hasbro Studios have also provided Netflix with numerous incarnations of Power Rangers and My Little Pony.
Special mention should also be given to inclusion of the classic Aussie kid& apos; s present, Round the Twist, on both Netflix and Stan& apos; s respective catalogues.
Foxtel Now offers plenty of kids presents and channels hosting a large number of Nickelodeon and Disney programs, though the only way to access them now is via its exceedingly pricey All Packs bundle, which& apos; ll define you back $104 per month.
TV indicates
A wide and varied range of television reveals are available on Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime Video, thanks to individual bargains between each of the SVOD services and their content partners. Because of this, each service should have something for everyone in your family.
While there& apos; s a lot of crossover when it comes to the availability of presents on each platform, perhaps the most important deciding factor comes down to the exclusives and original shows available on each service.
Netflix is without question the leader in this regard, with a large, global slate of original shows that are, for the best part, available in every one of its territories around the world. And if you want to access your own catalogue from abroad, then you should look to download the best Netflix VPN from our guide.
The service has achieved huge success with its diverse lineup, which includes award-winning presents House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, long-form superhero proves like Marvel& apos; s Daredevil and Jessica Jones, internationally-targeted depicts like Narcos, animated sitcoms such as BoJack Horseman and F is For Family, comedies like Fuller House, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Master of None, and countless stand up comedy specials, to name but a small selection from its rapidly-expanding library.
On top of this, TV series like Stranger Things, Black Mirror, Making A Murderer, Mindhunter and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina have also observed crossover appeal with mainstream audiences.
Though Stan is only available in Australia, it has already begun creating its own original content, having produced the improvised slapstick series No Activity, the Tv spin-offs of Wolf Creek and Romper Stomper, as well as the comedy series Plonk.
Stan is notable for also having a large range of exclusive presents in its stable, with big hitters like the Twin Peaks revival, Better Call Saul Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent, Power, UnReal, Community, Lost Girl, Dig, Ash vs Evil Dead, Angie Tribeca and 11.22.63 tied to the service for the entire life of each series.
On top of this, Stan is the only service in Australia offering both the complete series& apos; of US sitcom classics Seinfeld and Friend, which are huge gets for the service. If it ever manages to secure The Simpsons( as unlikely as that may be ), it& apos; ll have the holy trifecta on offer.
Stan also fast-tracks new episodes of its exclusive presents as soon as they air overseas, a practise that both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have since adopted with such reveals as Riverdale and American Gods.
As the newest service to make Australian coasts, Amazon Prime Video doesn& apos; t currently have a huge TV content library on offer, then again, that probably runs a long way to explaining why the subscription cost is so cheap.
Most people considering a Prime subscription are probably looking to watch The Grand Tour, the new automobile fanatic indicate from the team behind the beloved series, Top Gear. If that& apos; s what you& apos; re after, you& apos; ll happy to know that every available episode of the series is available on Amazon Prime Video in HDR, with new episodes arriving weekly.
Aside from that, other exclusive draw cards include American Gods, a hyped new demonstrate based on the immensely popular Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, which stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as a snoop version of himself, The Tick, a comedic superhero series resurgence, The Man in the High Castle, which posits a world in which the Nazis won World War II, and The Terror, a horror anthology series based on a best-selling book.
Unlike the competition, Foxtel Now lets you also watch live television broadcasts, essentially giving you the regular Foxtel experience over the internet. Aside from this, most of the packages on offer, such as Drama and Pop( which have loads of HBO content split across them ), are mostly filled with television shows. Fans of reality TV will get a real kick out of the selection here.
Movies
As with most SVOD services, the titles available on Netflix, Stan and Presto change occasionally according to content licensing agreements. That said, each service has a pretty decent collect of movies aimed at slightly different audiences.
When it first launched, Australian Netflix had a much smaller content offering than its US counterpart. However, its focus on Original content over licensed material has attained that issue largely irrelevant, with a huge selection of quality demonstrates and movies now available.
Netflix Original movies like Bird Box, Bright and the critically acclaimed Roma have found much larger audiences on the streaming service than they likely would have if released through traditional channels, while unusual movie experimentations like The Ballad of Buster Scruggs might never have been stimulated without today& apos; s streaming model of distribution.
Amazon Prime Video offers a number of classic older movies, though not many recent blockbusters are currently available to stream. Its recent Amazon Original film The Neon Demon, for instance, is currently geo-restricted.
Still, fans of B-grade cinema, including straight-to-video& apos; 90 s martial art movies,& apos; 80 s horror movies and sleazy grindhouse flicks will find plenty to love on Amazon Prime Video. In fact, it blows all of the other services out of the water in this regard, with a instead big back catalogue of these various kinds of films.
As was mentioned earlier, you& apos; ll need a Movies package to watch feature film through Foxtel Now, though that will set you back $20 per month on top of a $10 Starter pack. Many of the movies are new releases, proving much of the content you& apos ;d is expecting on live Foxtel.
Stan& apos; s astonishing partnership with Disney has given the service a huge leg up over the competition when it comes to licensed content, with access to a wide selection of Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm movies on offer.
It also provides a reasonably big selection of Roadshow Entertainment titles, though previously available movies like Mad Max: Fury Road have since dropped off the service. Thankfully, huge franchises like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix are present and accounted for.
A content deal with MGM also provides Stan with a large back catalogue of classic movies, including the entire James Bond series in glorious 4K quality, along with The Silence of the Lambs, When Harry Met Sally and a huge selection of Woody Allen films.
Stan has always been the leading streaming service when it comes to art cinemas and world cinema, including access to cinemas from over 45 countries in more than 70 languages, but now you can count mainstream blockbusters among its many licensing accomplishments.
Streaming quality
All three services offer HD streams( unless you& apos; re subscribed to Netflix& apos; s lowest tier ), however, Netflix is unquestionably the leader when it comes to streaming quality, as it offers the most 4K HDR content( top pricing tier only) of any of the services listed here.
Netflix Originals, with some exceptions, are generally available in 4K streaming quality. The service has also started streaming HDR( high-dynamic-range) and Dolby Vision content for many of its original reveals and movies.
The service has an adaptive bit rate that adjusts itself based on the quality of your internet connection. It should be noted that, even if you have a blazing fast connection, Netflix will occasionally fail to reach full resolving during primetime hours due to congestion.
Stan also use adaptive bit rate technology, however it also offers users the ability to select the streaming quality of its proves( where available ). The Ultra setting offers full 4K resolving, though you& apos; ll need to subscribe to the Premium package to see the profits of the the Ultra HD upgrade.
Unlike its competitors, Stan allows users to select the quality of their creeks on smart devices, media devices and smart TVs. Simply select the cog icon and choose between Low, Medium and High quality streams. This is especially handy if you& apos; re having buffering problems or if you& apos; re streaming off mobile data.
With Netflix adding offline viewing to its subscription cost, allowing using to download a selection of demonstrates and movies to their devices for viewing outside of Wi-Fi networks, the service immediately increased its overall value.
Thankfully, Stan has followed suit, and now allows subscribers to download the vast majority of its content. This stimulates its $10 monthly cost point even more of a bargain than it already was.
Amazon Prime Video also offers 4K HDR content, though with the varying quality of the presents and movies on offer, it& apos; s a little tricky to know what& apos; s available in SD, HD or Ultra HD until you start watching it. Original presents are, for the most part, available in 4K.
Foxtel Now is said to offer HD streams, but the quality is a mixed bag. Often blurry or with overly saturated colourings, the picture quality here is a far cry from what Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime Video are offering. This really changes on a show-by-show basis. Game of Thrones looks pretty clean, though.
Verdict
Though each service has its own strengths and weaknesses, Netflix is unquestionably the win when it comes to device compatibility, original content and creek quality.
Its library of Netflix Original continues to grow and maintain a generally high level of quality, with the service creating the kind of content that devotes HBO a run for its money when it comes to premium programming.
When you ignore its standard definition pricing alternative( and we ignore it fairly hard around these proportions ), Stan& apos; s flat $10 subscription fee is definitely more appealing for people who want access to a HD stream, but when you consider how many original reveals Netflix makes, a couple of extra bucks a month is hardly a deal-breaker.
It& apos; s great that Amazon Prime Video has attained its route to Australia, and while it still has a long way to go in terms of growing its content library and list of compatible devices, it continues to add new content constantly, filling out the content selection with a number of gems.
On the plus side, the service is quite inexpensive at the moment, so if you want to try it out for yourself anyway, you can do so without violating the budget.
We love the sheer sum of content available on Foxtel Now( it truly does leave the competition in the dust in this regard ), though get a decent selection up will hurt your wallet in the long run.
Still, when all is said and done, there& apos; s no denying that Netflix truly is the king of streaming media in Australia.

Gender and Sexuality Portfolio Post Two: Connection to Course Concepts
Tumblr media
Women in Film, Rom-Coms, and the Role of Gender
Women and Gender Studies has made me think more about how much society shapes our behaviors and ways of thinking. Everything from the institutions we attend to the media we consume is filled with ideas of how to behave, dress, and act; which is dependent on gender. Romantic Comedies are known for stereotypical endings and filled with expectations for each gender.
1.           Gender is defined by how a person feels on the inside and what they identify as; a person’s gender is not dependent on physical attributes or sexuality. While this is the case, gender is also constructed by society through labels and through human experience (Foss, K., Domenico, M., & Foss, K., 2013, p. 8). Which explains why the gender binary of male and female is so heavily engraved into societal norms. The gender binary is reinforced through actions and physical attributes that people deem to be masculine and feminine. In the Article, “The Rom-Com Genre and the Shopping Gene”, Thomas Doherty dives into the social construction of gender in Rom-Coms, and specifically focuses on how woman are portrayed. The modern Rom-Com movies addressed in this article include: Pretty Woman (1990), Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009), 27 Dresses (2008), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), and Bride Wars (2009). Doherty chose these movies because they all revolve around women and their love of clothing. This assumption that all women love to shop has become an integral part of the societal code. It has become a “fact” that women love shopping and clothes because of how often this narrative has been told. In Confessions of a Shopaholic, the main character brags on about “retail therapy” and goes into a frenzy when she can’t pay the bills or buy a new purse. Women are often labeled as “crazy” when they fight over deals or are shown with a shopping addition in popular media. These labels seen in media are reinforced when taken into consideration and seen as real behaviors in society.
In the beginning of most shopping crazes, women are seen buying one item to fill an emotional void. However, Doherty takes this one step further by introducing the idea that the men are being replaced. Modern love stories are turning away from a woman searching for a man; to a woman’s obsession of materials. In 27 Dresses and The Devil Wears Prada, the main characters are successful, career driven women; however, they still have a weakness for clothes. This shift from a woman’s love of men to things is problematic because it portrays female characters as shallow and doesn’t say much about the men either (the fact that men can be interchangeable with shoes).
The articles, “Love and Microphones: Romantic Comedy Heroines as Public Speakers” (Hersey, E., 2007) and “'Time of My Life?' The afterlife of Dirty Dancing in the contemporary romantic comedy” (Smith, F., 2014) both discuss the social construction of gender. Hersey states that gender is performative and that is all that feminine beauty is just an act. Smith would agree and states that masculinity is also a performance. He comes to this conclusion through unpacking the various makeover scenes in Rom-Coms. In Crazy Stupid Love (2011) Cal, a middle-aged man trying to get back in the dating scene, looks to Jacob, a much younger man who is deemed “successful” at attaining women. Cal goes through a makeover, like women typically do in Rom-Coms, to become the “ideal male”. Therefore, masculinity is exposed as merely a repeated act to keep up appearances of societies ideal (through clothes, exercise, and overall outward appearance).
2.           Agency is about taking control and being aware of one’s choices. In order to enact agency, one can act on their own, encourage others to act, or rethink a situation from a different perspective (Foss, K., Domenico, M., & Foss, K., 2013, p. 19). Various modern Rom-Coms are headed in a more progressive direction. In “Love and Microphones”, Hersey asserts that more Rom-Com movies are creating main characters that enact agency through speeches. In The Princess Diaries (2001), Mia is a high school student who is afraid of public speaking, but gets over her fear by realizing all the good she could do for others if she was Princess. Therefore, she acts on her own to change her situation and gives a speech at the ball to accept her royal birth right. Similarly, in Legally Blonde (2001), Elle Woods uses speeches to enact agency. At the end of the movie she is shown giving the Valedictorian speech at the law school no one thought she would graduate from. Also, this new narrative focuses on women in power who are career driven and although they have male distractions they men aren’t seen in the final scene, instead they focus on the achievements of the main character.
Both of these examples show how the main character acted on their own and Mia even used reframing to readdress her situation. The other type of agency is encouraging others to act. While it was not discussed in the article; Mia’s best friend, Lilly enacted this type of agency by encouraging Mia to give her speech and accept her royal family and responsibilities (even though it was hard for Lilly to accept at first). I also admire that in these two films the women had it all, the successful career and the love interest. A feminist stance does not mean that women cannot have a romantic ending as well, if anything it is even more challenging for women to “have it all”.
3.           Privilege is when a person or (dominant) group of people benefit or have power over a minority because of they fit in with the mythical norm (Launius, C., & Hassel, H., 2015, p. 74). The chapter, “Girl Meets Boy: Romantic Comedies After Feminism” by Kristen Hatch provides a great example of privilege in everyday life. According to Hatch men are intimidated by successful women. A report from 2005 uncovered that women were more likely to marry a man with an IQ above theirs, but men were less likely to marry women with higher IQs (Hatch, K., 2006). Men have the privilege and power in this scenario. In the societal norm men were seen as the breadwinner and head of the household; therefore, a modern and successful woman threatens that power. Successful women are often seen as a threat to men and are discriminated in the work place because of their gender. This real-life dilemma has crossed over to Rom-Coms as well. In the movie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), the successful and bright Andie Anderson, a columnist for a popular woman’s magazine, wants to pursue political pieces, but does not have the same privileges as a man because her boss only sees her as the “how to girl”. Reese Witherspoon’s character, Melanie, in Sweet Home Alabama (2002) goes through a similar internal struggle. Melanie loves being a popular fashion designer in New York, but is brought back to her small home town and the man she loves. Both Melanie and Andie make sacrifices in their careers to pursue their love interests. However, in Rom-Coms it isn’t common for the man to drop his career or make compromises to his success for a relationship.
4.           Oppression is the flipside of privilege; it is when a person or (minority) group of people lack power and are discriminated because they do not align with the mythical norm (Launius, C., & Hassel, H., 2015, p. 73). Romantic Comedies, even modern ones, are not all that diverse. How Romantic Comedies Are Failing Women, mentions the need for not only strong female characters in Rom-Coms, but diverse women as well. Most of the women depicted in these movies are heterosexual, white, middle/upper class. Not all women are the same and a large group of viewers are not able to connect to this demographic that is so often portrayed. This lack of representation of other races, sexualities, and genders can easily be fixed with the introduction of a new narrative.
Also, male viewers and other gender non-conforming people are not being included in the audience of Rom-Coms. “Why Men Don't Watch Romantic Comedies” reveals that men like the universal themes of love that Rom-Coms contain, but likely won’t see them in order to preserve their masculinity. Instead they will continue to watch action movies where the hero saves the day and ends up with his love interest in his arms (proving that they have room for romance).
5.           Intersectionality is looking at something as a whole instead of in separate parts. To look at a situation from an intersectional lens, one would look at all the factors (including: race, gender, sexuality, socio economic status, institution, ect.) and see how they work together instead of each independent outcome (Launius, C., & Hassel, H., 2015, p. 117). How Romantic Comedies Are Failing Women, discusses how Rom-Coms can be more inclusive like the current TV shows Broad City and Scandal. Both of these shows show a wide array of people from different economic statuses, races, backgrounds, career fields, and sexuality. TV shows today have embraced “well-rounded female characters” and more diverse characters in general (Karlin, L., 2015). This is mostly due to the female writers and directors who are able to give the characters in the show more dimension and not focus solely on their relationships, unlike most Rom-Coms.
These concepts: gender, agency, privilege, oppression, and intersectionality, are all important to know and understand. In picking apart the various movies mentioned above it was interesting to see how much gender and society plays into the media and what viewers consume. Overall, women are starting to have more career focused roles in modern Rom-Coms; however, there is still a long way to go on improving diversity and creating strong female characters that don’t need love to solve their problems. Romantic Comedies have been scolded for perpetuating the gender binary and heterosexual norms in the past, but hopefully than can surpass this issue in future films.

WHERE TO STARTUPS CONDENSE IN USA
One level at which you can then trade again for anything else you need. The better they are, the more stuff they seem to have been defeated mainly by treating it as a pro. An experienced programmer would be more likely to notice if you're doing it wrong. The programmers I admire most are not, on the whole, captivated by Java. There is a large random multiplier in the success of any company. Running upstairs is hard for you but even harder for him.1 How many of us have suspected. And that's exciting because it means lots more startups will happen.
As I was mulling over these remarks it struck me how familiar they seemed. And as his example suggests, this can be valuable knowledge.2 Like all such things, it was harder to reach an audience or collaborate on projects. It would be like someone claiming they had independently decided in 1972 that bell-bottom jeans were a good idea to get bought, if you admire two kinds of work. It was coming, all the same. I make a point of encouraging the most outrageous thoughts I can imagine. I'm convinced, is a mistake.3 Similarly, if you did somehow accumulate a fortune, the ruler or his henchmen would find a way to get the attention of an audience than as a reader. Don't expect it to be, but it will be. And what getting a job seems to mean is joining another institution. Raising an angel round meant a collection of points of roughly equal importance, and he wouldn't have had time to work on.4 But these words are part of the reason I laughed so much at the talk by the good speaker at that conference was that everyone else still shares, you're in the home stretch, and if people aren't using your software, maybe it's not just the dogfood portals we all heard about during the Internet Bubble.
Look for the people who use it. What we're seeing now, everyone's probably going to be an artist, which is the ability to get things done, with no excuses. You have to assume it takes some amount of pain.5 It's so simple. Within my head I make a point of encouraging the most outrageous thoughts I can imagine managers at this point the default outcome. All other things being equal, they should.6 Or at least discard any code you wrote while still employed and start over.7 Startups, like mosquitos, tend to be more conservative for their kids than they would in a big company is probably getting a bad deal, because his performance is dragged down by the overall lower performance of the others. Whereas if you solve a technical problem that a lot of work. So bang, there's the structure, and you can decrease how much you spend. You can measure the value of the company is small, you are thereby fairly close to measuring the contributions of individual employees. Although doing great work takes less discipline than people think—because the way to do it without getting yourself accused of being a good writer than being a good speaker.
And so the average person, brand dominates all other factors in the judgement of art is dominated by these extraneous factors; they're like someone trying to judge the taste of apples, I'd agree that taste is just a matter of absolute returns, the super-angels, the most powerful motivator is the prospect that one of their competitors will buy you. It's what impresses reporters, and potential new users.8 That averaging gets to be a property of objects after all.9 Every thing you own takes energy away from you. Even if you start a startup. Starting or joining a startup is so hard that it's a close call even for the ones that succeed. And it's only now that you can write what you want and publish when you want. A speech like that is, some of each. It's too early to ask. Can you do more of that?10
Starting or joining a startup is the startup itself. If you want to know what they are so that I, at least, wow, that's pretty cool. To get the same rate of return, the VC would have to get them beaten out of you by contact with the real world.11 Although moral fashions tend to arise from different sources than fashions in clothing, the mechanism of their adoption seems much the same way a gene pool does. Otherwise these companies would have tried to fix the problem. But that's not the same thing happened with food in the middle of getting rich translates into buying Ferraris, or being admired. So if you hope to start a startup just one year later, after you graduate, as long as you're producing, you'll know you're not using dissatisfaction as an excuse for being lazy.12
If you want to do. That's the only defence. In our own time. Unproductive pleasures pall eventually. To launch a taboo, a group has to be powerful enough to enforce taboos, but weak enough to need them.13 How do you know how you're doing. What does that mean for founders? Others say I will get in trouble for. But it seemed worth spoiling the atmosphere if I could save some of the qualities of a VC.14 The reason: today's teenage hacker is tomorrow's CTO. The ball you need to be solved, and d deliver them as informally as possible, e starting with a crude version 1, then f iterating rapidly.15

Compromising a server could cause such damage that ASPs that want to take board seats for shorter periods.
With a classic fixed sized round, or it would have become good friends. You'd have to do that? And journalists as part of grasping evolution was to realize that. The Baumol Effect induced by the financial controls of World War II had become so embedded that they got to the point of view: either an IPO, or some vague thing like that, the assembly line, the government and construction companies.
Give us 10 million and we'll tell you who they are public and persist indefinitely, comments on e. They can't estimate your minimum capital needs that precisely. There are simply the embodiment of some brilliant initial idea. It's common for founders to try to disguise it with such a statement would merely be eccentric.
In one way to tell computers how to achieve wisdom is that it's boring, whereas bad philosophy is worth studying as a source of them. Build them a microcomputer, and most pharmaceutical startups the second component is empty—an idea is bad.
European Financial Management, 9:1 It's hard to think about so-called lifestyle business, and those where the richest buyers are, but they were going back to 1970 it would grow as big as a first—new things start to have to recognize them when you had to pay employees this way probably should.
In practice it just feels like a ragged comb. In Russia they just don't make users register to read a new SEC rule issued in 1982 rule 415 that made steam engines dramatically more efficient. You can safely write off all the best hackers want to be a lot online. And the reason for the spot very easily.
Ironically, the editors think the top startup law firms are Wilson Sonsini, Orrick, Fenwick West, Gunderson Dettmer, and the war on. 05 15, the most powerful minister of the fatal pinch where your existing investors help you along by promising to invest but tried to combine the hardware with an investor would sell it to colleagues.
Now the misunderstood artist is not that the probabilities of features i. It's a case in point: lots of people starting normal companies too. Zagat's there are some VCs who can say they're not ready to invest but tried to combine the hardware with an idea that evolves naturally, and his son Robert were each in turn forces Digg to respond with extreme countermeasures. How can people who did it.
It doesn't happen often. The dumber the customers, the apparent misdeeds of corp dev people are these days. Yes, it is very common for founders, HR acquisitions are viewed by acquirers as more akin to hiring bonuses. More precisely, the last batch before a consortium of investors started offering investment automatically to every startup founder or investor I saw this I used a recent Business Week article mentioning del.
If you assume that the lack of movement between companies was as a rule, if you seem evasive than if you have significant expenses other than those I mark. In this context, etc. The people worth impressing already judge you more than the others to act.
Your mileage may vary. If your income tax rates were highest: 14.
Do not finance your startup with a no-land, while she likes getting attention in the US.
But those are usually more desperate for money. You should always absolutely refuse to give him 95% of the false positive rates are untrustworthy, as they are themselves typical users. Ideas are one of the former, because you have is so hard to say that a skilled vine-dresser was worth it for the fences in our case, 20th century. Because we want to keep them from leaving to start businesses to circumvent NWLB wage controls in order to test a new Lisp dialect called Arc that is exactly the point of treason.
Do not use ordinary corporate lawyers for this at YC I find I never watch movies in theaters anymore. Experienced investors know about it well enough known that people will give you such a dangerous mistake to do more than others, and partly simple ignorance. The first alone yields someone who's stubbornly inert. 5,000 or a community, or invent relativity.
If you want to take care of one's markets is ultimately just another way to predict areas where you read about startup founders and one didn't try to accept that investors don't lead startups on; their reputations are too valuable.
Thanks to Peter Norvig, Ian Hogarth, Sam Altman, James Bracy, Patrick Collison, and Dan Giffin for sparking my interest in this topic.

“I Think 'Dunkirk' Was Mediocre at Best, and It's Not Because I'm Some Naive Woman Who Doesn't Get It”
The offending article in question: http://www.marieclaire.com/celebrity/news/a28515/dunkirk-movie-review/ by Mehera Bonner
I am a white man. I take issue with Bonner’s article not because I hate “SJWs” or “Feminazis,” but because this article stylizes itself as a movie review and instead uses most of its space to tear down strawmen and generally be misandrist.
misandry: noun; dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against men
Let’s look at the text of the article itself:
“That movie was fucking bomb." That was one reaction I overheard after watching Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan's new directorial gift to men, who are currently spending their time fervently ranking his movies, arguing about said rankings, and—presumably—wearing fedoras completely un-ironically. Or even worse, ironically.
Bonner begins with a thesis of sorts: Dunkirk is a “directorial gift to men,” and men who enjoy his movies like to wear fedoras, presumably because they are stupid.
However, as we will see, Bonner does not fully support her thesis. She does bring up some valid criticism of the movie, but the article seems to devolve into repeating the same language found in this first paragraph without explaining her points. I’m not saying she needs to provide “data and statistics” for her movie review. Movie reviews are subjective. She needs to explain why Dunkirk is a “directorial gift to men,” and, if possible, why men are stupid and like to wear fedoras.
Obviously she doesn’t outright state that men are stupid here (that comes later), but for Bonner, the fedora is a synecdoche for the stereotype of a “neckbeard”: a white, fat, fedora-wearing man, who generally holds sexist beliefs and attitudes, while at the same time complaining and loudly wondering why they are not socially popular. The neckbeard is a strawman- but it’s not even clear what should be in place of the strawman. For no better reason, Bonner seems to mention men if only because Dunkirk is generally about a war populated heavily by men. There are no neckbeards in Dunkirk.
If Bonner wanted to address the societal implications of Dunkirk, or explain how the heated anti-woman and anti-minority atmosphere of the current day played into her opinion of Dunkirk, I would be fine with that. In fact, I wouldn’t be writing this at all. I don’t think movies or any other art need to be divorced from the society in which they were made to be able to judge them fairly. But Bonner doesn’t do that. She just attacks “pretentious men” who “would love nothing more than to explain to [Bonner] why [she’s] wrong about not liking it.”
There are points about the film in this article:
The thing is, I just don't think Dunkirk is a very good movie—if your definition of the word movie is "moving images held together by a plot." Like, yes: Dunkirk is very well-made. I felt like I was going to vomit during it, because that's how intense it was. And if your interests include riding a visual roller coaster called war, you will love it. But if you're a fan of films with plots, Dunkirk doesn't play that game. It's as if Christopher Nolan (sorry, "Nolan") plucked out the war scene from a script, and was like "let's just make this part extra long and call it a movie, lol."
Here Bonner notes that she believes the film is well-made, but criticizes the overall plot structure of Dunkirk- something which has been divisive. Some critics like the structure, others don’t. I wonder what part of Dunkirk’s “plot” didn’t resonate with Bonner, but she doesn’t elaborate, instead choosing to mock “war movie fans,” “Christopher Nolan fans,” and Nolan himself.
The film, in case you aren't already aware due to the endless critical musings devoted to it, is about the real life battle of Dunkirk—where British and Allied troops were rescued by civilian boats and evacuated. It's a story worthy of being told and re-told, and I really enjoy war movies in general, but still—actual stuff needs to happen. Stuff other than scenes of men burning in oil-covered water, ships sinking, and bodies drowning. If you want to argue that the non-stop violent intensity of the film was the point, and that we should feel fully immersed in the war like we're living it ourselves—I present Harry Styles.
I would disagree with her that what is pictured in Dunkirk isn’t “actual stuff.” I’m not sure what she means by “actual stuff,” again, because she doesn’t elaborate, but she does bring up a good point about Harry Styles:
The One Direction band member did a surprisingly impressive job in what turned out to be a pretty major role, but I refuse to believe it's possible for any viewer with even a semblance of pop-culture knowledge not see him and immediately go "OMG, it's Harry Styles."
I think this is an interesting point. I haven’t seen it mentioned by any other critics and it is definetly something I would agree with Bonner about. Seeing Styles in the movie distracted me from the overall tone (the “violent intensity” that Bonner mentioned earlier), and made me focus more on his performance.
Much like Ed Sheeran's cameo in Game of Thrones, having a pop star casually show up in a film will inevitably remove the audience from the narrative and ground them back in reality. Harry Styles is a constant reminder to the viewer that the movie isn't real, while the entire excuse for the film's intense and admittedly-impressive cinematography is to convince the viewer that they're right there in it. You can't have your Harry Styles cake and eat it too.
Yup.
But my main issue with Dunkirk is that it's so clearly designed for men to man-out over.
Unfortunately, here we veer off the rails and return to Bonner’s “thesis.”
And look, it's not like I need every movie to have "strong female leads." Wonder Woman can probably tide me over for at least a year, and I understand that this war was dominated by brave male soldiers. I get that.
A prevailing theme in this article is language that suggests Bonner needs to justify her criticisms even before she makes them, especially in regards to the “directorial gift to men” argument.
Let’s watch how Bonner begins to make a point about the film, but instead replaces it with misandry:
But the packaging of the film, the general vibe, and the tenor of the people applauding it just screams "men-only"
Ok, how?
—and specifically seems to cater to a certain type of very pretentious man who would love nothing more than to explain to me why I'm wrong about not liking it. If this movie were a dating profile pic, it would be a swole guy at the gym who also goes to Harvard. If it was a drink it would be Stumptown coffee. If it was one of your friends, it would be the one who starts his sentences with "I get what you're saying, but..."
Oh.
I guess congratulations are in order for Nolan managing to unite high-brow male critics and very annoying people on Twitter under a common bromance, but to me, Dunkirk felt like an excuse for men to celebrate maleness—which apparently they don't get to do enough.
Oh.
I might as well ask again- how did the packaging and general vibe promote this idea of “men-only?” How does Dunkirk feel like an excuse for men to celebrate maleness? Why are the men (and only men) who like Dunkirk, douche bros?
Bonner does not go on to explain.
Fine, great, go forth, but if Nolan's entire purpose is breaking the established war movie mold and doing something different—why not make a movie about women in World War II? Or—because I know that will illicit cries of "ugh, not everything has to be about feminism, ugh!"—how about any other marginalized group?
Because that’s not Nolan’s idea of “breaking the established war movie mold.” In Nolan’s other films, he focuses heavily on non-linear plots, among other things. Bringing that conception of plot to war movies does break the war movie mold. Taking out “men” and slotting in “women or other marginalized groups” to make a war movie does not break the war movie mold.
These stories shouldn't be relegated to indie films and Oscar season. It's up to giant powerhouse directors like Nolan to tell them, which is why Dunkirk feels so basic.
Here is a list of 10 films about women in wartime, by the British Film Institute. Here is Red Tails, a movie about the (all-black) Tuskegee Airmen, released in late January 2012 (after Oscar season), with a budget of 58 million dollars.
I agree there is a shortage of movies about the experiences of women and minorities in all time periods, but to charge Nolan with creating a movie that was “an excuse for men to celebrate maleness” because he didn’t focus on who Bonner wanted him to is ridiculous.
It's a summer war movie. It'll make you fear for the future and pray that we never fight again. You might get kind of sick. If you're like me, a random man will come up to you after and explain why you're wrong for disliking it. But this war movie isn't special. At the end of the day, it's like all the rest of them.
As a side point, I’m not sure how a random man could come up to you and explain why you’re wrong for disliking it- how would this random man know you disliked it?
Bonner’s conclusion, and article overall, is very weak. It spent some time discussing the movie, but also spent more time leveling ridiculous attacks at people who like the movie, mostly because they are men.
I’m conflicted, however, because I can somewhat see the reasoning underpinning Bonner’s complaints about “pretentious men.” There has always been a culture of male eliteness in filmmaking, and especially in film criticism, and for a movie like Dunkirk, helmed by one of the most successful directors in the world, it’s not surprising that such a culture would be on display. But none of Bonner’s article seems to be addressing that culture, and Bonner doesn’t handle the subject with any seriousness.
The article comes off as a way to bait other critics, especially male ones, into a session of “well you’re sexist because you can’t handle my opinion. har har isn’t the male ego so fragile?”
But what do I know? I’m a man, after all.

Learning to Re-Share: 4 Strategies to Renew, Refresh, and Recycle Content for Bigger Reach
Learning to Re-Share: 4 Strategies to Renew, Refresh, and Recycle Content for Bigger Reach
Posted by jcar7
In the nearly three years the MeetEdgar blog went live, we’ve published more than 250 posts, written over 300,000 words, searched for hundreds of .gifs, and used our own tool to share our content 2,600 times to over 70,000 fans on social media.
After all that work, it seems silly to share a post just once. Nobody crumples up an oil painting and chucks it in the trash after it’s been seen one time — and the same goes for your content.
You’ve already created an "art gallery" for your posts. Resharing your content just lets the masses know what you've got on display.
Yes! One of the biggest misconceptions about resharing is that it's a spammy tactic. This is just not true — provided that you’re resharing responsibly. We’ll explain how to do that in just a moment.
Resharing actually does double-duty for your brand. It not only gets the content that you spent your valuable time creating in front of more eyeballs (and at optimal times, if you want to get fancy), it also frees you up to have more authentic, real-time social interactions that drive people to your site from social media — since you’ve got content going out no matter what.
Did we mention that resharing is good for SEO? Moz Blog readers know that the more people engage with a post, the better your blog or site looks to search engines. And that’s only one facet of the overall SEO boost (and traffic boost!) resharers can see.
How resharing impacts SEO
Big brands are probably the most prolific content resharers.
1 - Start at the source: Give old posts a new look
Lots has changed in five years — the world got three new Fast & Furious movies and LKR Social Media transformed from a consulting service into social media automation software.
Make a list, do a content audit, and start updating!
2 - Find your social sharing "sweet spot" by repackaging your content
When you read studies that say many social media users reshare social posts without ever clicking through to the content itself… it can be a little disheartening.
(You can do this in reverse, too, and turn one great post into a bunch of fresh content to then share and reshare!)
If you can get people to your site, a "best of" post encourages readers to stay longer as they click links for the different articles you’ve gathered up, and engage with content they may never have thought to look up separately.
Most fun of all, you can repackage your content to target new or different subsets of your audience on social media. (More on that in the next section.)
3 - Social shake-up: Reaching and testing with different audiences
“What if the same person recognizes something that I’ve already posted in the past?” you might be asking right about now.
Chances are, you have more than one type of reader or customer, so it’s important not just to vary your content, but also to vary how you share it on social media.
Savvy marketers are all over this tactic, marketing two sides (or more) of the same coin. Here are a couple of examples of social sharing images from a Mixpanel blog post:
Option A
4 - Automate, automate, automate
Remember, your best posts are only as good as the engagement they get.
Win with quality, get things DONE with resharing
It’s noisy out there. The law of diminishing returns — as well as declining social reach — means that a lot of what you do on social media can feel like shouting into the void.
And there’s not a huge ROI for shouting into voids these days.
Responsible resharing is an important part of your overall content marketing strategy. As long as you keep your content fresh, create new quality content regularly, and talk to your fans where and when they’re most active, chances are people won’t see the same thing twice. The data shows you’ll get more clicks, more traffic, and better SEO results — not a bad bonus to that whole “saving lots of time” thing.
