this culminates in people posting the memes comparing Discord's file upload functionality with Skype's file upload functionality which I initially assumed to be ironic in a similar way as those memes comparing a brick and a windows pc where the conclusion is that brick wins because it can't run league of legends...
but at this point a nonzero number of people are taking it seriously, in which case I need to remind people that the reason why Discord limits file sizes is because it stores them pretty much indefinitely for you, for free, as opposed to Skype's file upload where both the sender and the receiver (yes, it's strictly point-to-point) have to be present for file transfer to succeed, the internet connection at no point can fail, so good luck uploading that 2GB file over your dinky 50KB/s upload connection you would likely have at the prime of Skype's popularity (also in my experience getting Skype file upload almost never worked)
if this form of file transfer is desireable, we have modern solution for this, in the form of Magic Wormhole, which is in no form tied to an existing chat protocol or service, and does not require you to set up accounts anywhere.
The nostalgia for Skype is so fucking funny. Like come on. Even now discord is objectively better than it ever was. Skype was genuinely dogshit and anyone trying to pretend like it wasn't either never used it or has completely forgotten what it was like
#computing#skype used to be a major deal in 2006 because it was the first mainstream voice call application#and at the time it also was absolute garbage for anything else#receiving and sending chat messages required both users to be connected at the same time#later on chat worked similarly as in text chat applications at the cost of compromising its P2P nature and also user privacy

Collective memories
You may have come across Semioticapocalypse, a blog I started—frightening to consider how long ago it was, — that became essentially the origin of the «Collective Memories» (CM). Both Semioticapocalypse and the CM project emerged primarily from my longstanding love for black-and-white photography, which later evolved into an interest in its history and theory. Secondly, thу new enterprise owes much to the staggering and mesmerizing impact that the Cambrian explosion in the world of generative models has had (and continues to have) on me, particularly when it comes to diffusion models, generating images visual or textual inputs as well as from various combinations of thereof.
The term "collective memory" denotes the aggregate of memories, knowledge, and data that a social group holds, which is intrinsically linked to the group's identity. The term "collective memory" in English and its French counterpart "la mémoire collective" emerged in the latter half of the 19th century. Maurice Halbwachs, a philosopher and sociologist, further developed this concept in his 1925 work, «Les cadres sociaux de la mémoire» (eng. text). Both expansive and intimate social collectives can create, disseminate, and inherit collective memory.
Contrary to the term "collective memory," which is somewhat ambiguously defined yet generally accepted, the notion of "collective memories" is inherently problematic. Memories are the results of the individual acts of recollection, making the idea of "collective memories" paradoxical. Сontemporary diffusion models utilize vast amounts of often unidentified data, including historical and personal old photographs, vintage postcards, and other kinds of publicly circulating images. These models may be seen as involved in the prompts-driven singular acts of remembrance, producing images that paradoxically represent "collective memories," something otherwise unfeasible and ultimately, non-existent.
The visual works published here and elsewhere on this blog were created using Midjourney. Each of them comes as the result of finding optimal (for lack of a better world) combined text/image prompt through exhaustive search a. k. a. generate-and-test method; the process is apparently as labor-intensive as it is time-consuming. The major part of the works belongs within the "Collective Memories" framework. In addition to visuals there will be eventually / hopefully a p2p publication or two.
Past works that align with the CM project in terms of both concept and style, even if not published as such, can be found on Behance. Then there's Instagram (crowв there is kind of thin but I'm set on daily updates). Last but not least, there are sporadic posts on Facebook, in designated groups only, — primarily 'MJ Official' (weekly or so) and another nice one here (occasionally). In case you would like (for whatever reason) to buy NFT or two, it can be arranged via Makers Place: drop me a line.

Every year the school district tries to get us to sign up for a new handful of services.
They used to use Live Grades then switched to Canvas. Canvas has messaging built into the platform. Students, Teachers, and Parents can all message each other.
The school district also has an app and keep trying to get us to sign up for the app both to monitor our students' assignments and for P2P messaging (both of which are available via Canvas, which they ARE still using this year), but I don't trust that it's actually secure AND have a really old phone which can't handle most recent apps. Not all students/parents have smart phones, either.
They're ALSO trying to push everyone to sign up for a Microsoft Rooms account, both on desktop and on the phone and I'm just like....
On top of that they automatically added everyone's phone numbers to a group texting service (Apptegy) without consent.
You have Canvas, my email address, and my phone number. I cannot and am not installing a bunch of apps, too. This is getting ridiculous. Pick A platform and stick to it.
Anyway I keep getting texted over and over on my too-old phone being told to claim my ROOMS account, finally told them to stop sending those texts and remove me from Apptegy, and they immediately emailed it. Again.
I do not want these accounts, thank you.
Already pissed off that so many of the places I've applied to work ALSO make me sign up for an account like........ I don't need an account if I'm not an employee.

Owen Grady owns a flip phone, and no digital footprint (no social media accounts, digital purchases are forwarded to a post office instead of his home address, owns a laptop solely to store his ethology research). His military career in DEVGRU still bleeds into his civilian life, years later, details which seem small, but actually allude to his high-functioning paranoia and strong value for privacy.
He owns a handful of phones, some of which he has kept like a pack-rat despite no longer needing them. A Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900, and a Solio Hybrid 1000 environmentally friendly universal solar charger. Used to have Samsung burner phones as a career soldier, a habit developed during his work with DEVGRU’s black squadron. Two satellite phones, as their encryption services also proved useful: an IRIDIUM, SEAFARER satellite phone he bought in Kuwait; sleek, robust, waterproof, includes P2P phone-for-free via encryption. Thuraya is another satellite phone he bought in Dubai; an Arabic product, dual sim cards, and some of the features on this specific model are not available in the North American model due to government regulations (able to disable the GPS on command and P2P conversations, unlimited text messages). The majority of these items were bought during his tours, requiring mobile phones to speak to assets and handle personal businesses with the Grady Ranch that was left to him by his late grandfather.
Owen also tends to strictly use encrypted email services, or disposable email address services such as TrashMail and CounterMail. With no digital footprint, Owen has almost no understanding of current online trends, memes, or streaming entertainments, and he is disinterested in learning about them, unless it’s for the benefit of a friend. But his time in the Navy has made him familiar with using acronyms (some of which directly came from U.S. military jargon).

History of Finance in India
The Evolution of Financial Management in India and Its Impact on the Economy
India’s financial management history is a fascinating journey that has significantly shaped its economy. Let’s explore this evolution in simple terms.
Early Beginnings
Financial management in India has ancient roots. Historically, India was known for its rich in nature trade and commerce. Ancient texts like the Arthashastra, written by Chanakya, provide insights into early financial practices, including taxation and statecraft.
Colonial Era
The British colonial period brought significant changes. The establishment of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in Kolkata 1935 marked a pivotal moment. The RBI became the sole central authority for regulating the country’s currency and credit systems. However, the financial system was primarily designed to serve colonial interests, focusing on trade and revenue and tax collection.
Post-Independence Reforms
After gaining independence in 1947, India faced the challenge of building a robust financial system. The government nationalized 13 major banks in 1969 to ensure financial inclusion and support economic development. This move aimed to extend banking services to rural areas and promote savings and investments.
Liberalization in the 1990s
The 1991 marked a turning point with economic liberalization. The government introduced reforms to open up the economy, reduce state control, and encourage private sector participation. The Multi National Companies across the globe were invited, encouraged to set up their businesses in India for cheap labour. To initiate this government also provided tax benefits to these companies.
These reforms led to significant growth in the financial sector. The stock market expanded, and new financial instruments like mutual funds and insurance products became popular. The liberalization era also saw the establishment of regulatory bodies like the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to oversee the capital markets.
Digital Revolution
In recent years, digital technology has revolutionized financial management in India. Initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana aimed to provide banking services to every household. The introduction of UPI or Unified Interface payments made transaction so quick and safe that today India is the largest country with the most number of online P2P and P2M transactions.
Impact on the Economy
The evolution of financial management has had a profound impact on the Indian economy:
Economic Growth: Financial reforms have fueled economic growth by attracting investments and promoting entrepreneurship.
Financial Inclusion: Nationalization of banks and digital initiatives have improved financial inclusion. The number of users of credit cards, online payments, loans and Bank account holders has increased significantly.
Stability and Regulation: The establishment of regulatory bodies like the RBI and SEBI has ensured stability and transparency in the financial system.
Innovation: The digital revolution has spurred innovation in financial services. Mobile Banking, Digital loans and Online Serices has made the work easier and efficient.
Conclusion
The history of financial management in India is a story of transformation and resilience. From ancient practices to modern digital innovations, each phase has contributed to shaping the economy. As India continues to evolve, its financial system will play a crucial role in driving sustainable growth and development.

Also SMS is NOT private and texting in general can be assumed to be insecure. Same with emails regardless of what provider you use.
Signal is theoretically more secure than SMS as it relies on P2P encryption, meaning only your device and the recipient's device can access the messages between you. Though ultimately there is a certain degree of trust you need to place in signal to not be somehow tampering with things. Signal is probably as good as you're going to get without hosting everything yourself on your own hardware and auditing the entire codebase of whatever app/protocol you're using.
PSA: never discuss private affairs in your DMs, especially contraception and abortion. Social media moguls will absolutely sell you out to the government. There are already cases of people being charged based on evidence in their DMs.

Google and Apple are probably going to collaborate on RCS communications for Indian iPhones.

Like standard SMS, Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging on iPhones will function over Wi-Fi or mobile data, enhancing texting capabilities without requiring any extra apps.
Apple and Google are allegedly negotiating the introduction of Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging for Indian iPhone customers. This change, which is currently dominated by WhatsApp and regular SMS, is apparently anticipated to occur later this year (timelines uncertain). It might have a big impact on India’s messaging market.
Google and Apple’s cooperation on RCS
Apple may integrate Google’s backend RCS technology into its iMessage platform in India, according to The Economic Times. By bridging the gap between the two ecosystems, this alliance would enable seamless RCS messaging communication between iPhone and Android users.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) RCS texting is currently available in eight countries, including the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, the UK, Belgium, and China, thanks to Apple. It is anticipated that a similar strategy will be used in India, where Apple will collaborate closely with telecom companies and Google. Visit Voice of Entrepreneur

Global RCS Market Growth: Key Players, Technologies & Strategic Insights
The global rich communication services market size is expected to reach USD 12.46 billion in 2030 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 25.3% from 2024 to 2030. Rich communication services (RCS) platforms overcome the limitations of SMS and provide additional services such as high-quality image sharing, chat rooms, and read receipt. Adoption of such mobile services by various businesses to enhance customer experience is anticipated to drive the market for rich communication services during the forecast period.
Companies from various sectors use RCS platforms for marketing their products and services. The rising spend on mobile advertising over the past few years is expected to fuel market growth over the forecast period. According to the global system for mobile communications association (GSMA), in 2018, the global spend on mobile advertising was USD 185.0 billion as compared to USD 109.0 billion in 2016. Furthermore, rising number of mobile SIM connections is projected to up-keep market growth in the near future.
Lack of end-to-end encryption is expected to impede the growth of the market for rich communication services during the forecast period. This lack of encryption in RCS platforms allows external sources to intercept and manipulate the user’s calls and texts. Attackers who are in the same network as that of the user and have the user’s phone number, can use their IP address and impersonate, creating complications. However, organizations such as Verizon; AT&T, Inc.; and T-Mobile are focusing on implementing end-to-end encryption in their RCS platforms to cater to the end-user requirements.
Rich Communication Services Market Report Highlights
The A2P communication segment led the market with a revenue share of 65.4% in 2023. This share is attributed to the increasing adoption of text messages to market products. Rich communication services overcome the constraints of traditional SMS platforms and enhance customer engagement.
The retail segment held a leading revenue share in 2023. Growing competition in the retail industry has resulted in the increased adoption of technology by retailers to offer a customized and interactive shopping experience to their customers.
Asia Pacific is expected to register the fastest CAGR during the forecast period in the global market. Rising smartphone usage in the region and an increasing focus of brands to boost customer engagement through innovative marketing techniques has highlighted the need for advanced messaging standards such as RCS

P2P Texting for Universities: Boosting Student Engagement in the Digital Age

In an era where students are glued to their smartphones, universities are turning to innovative communication strategies to cut through the noise. Peer-to-peer P2p Texting for Universities—a method where personalized messages are sent at scale via human-driven platforms—has emerged as a game-changer for higher education. From admissions outreach to alumni fundraising, P2P texting bridges the gap between institutional goals and student preferences. This article explores how universities can leverage P2P texting to foster meaningful connections, streamline operations, and drive results.
What Is P2P Texting?
P2P texting enables staff, ambassadors, or volunteers to send tailored text messages to individuals while maintaining one-on-one conversations. Unlike impersonal bulk SMS blasts, P2P platforms allow senders to manage hundreds of personalized interactions daily, respond to questions in real time, and track engagement metrics. For universities, this blend of scalability and personalization makes it ideal for:
Admissions campaigns (e.g., nudging applicants to complete forms).
Event reminders (e.g., orientation, career fairs).
Fundraising appeals to alumni.
Emergency alerts (e.g., campus closures).
Why Universities Are Adopting P2P Texting
Text messages boast a 98% open rate, compared to ~20% for emails. Students are more likely to respond to a personalized text from a real person than an automated email.
Personalized Student Journeys
P2P platforms let universities segment audiences (e.g., prospective students, current undergrads, alumni) and tailor messages. For example, a reminder about scholarship deadlines can include the recipient’s name and a link to their application portal.
Cost-Effective Outreach
P2P texting reduces reliance on expensive mailers or paid ads. A single staff member can manage thousands of conversations, freeing resources for other priorities.
Real-Time Feedback
Two-way conversations allow universities to address concerns instantly. Prospective students can ask questions about housing, while alumni can clarify donation processes—all via text.
Inclusivity
Texting bridges gaps for students without reliable internet access, ensuring critical information reaches everyone.
Use Cases in Higher Education
Admissions: Send personalized nudges to applicants with incomplete forms, share virtual tour links, or schedule campus visits.
Retention: Check in with at-risk students, share academic deadlines, or promote mental health resources.
Alumni Relations: Mobilize graduates during fundraising drives with direct appeals and donation links.
Crisis Communication: Disseminate urgent updates (e.g., COVID protocols, weather alerts) with guaranteed visibility.
Challenges to Consider
Compliance: Universities must comply with regulations like the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), which requires prior consent for mass texting.
Opt-Out Management: Platforms must honor “STOP” requests to avoid spam complaints.
Training: Staff need coaching to maintain a friendly, professional tone and handle sensitive topics.
Integration: Syncing P2P platforms with existing CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce, Slate) ensures seamless data flow.
Best Practices for Success
Collect opt-ins via forms, websites, or during campus events. Clearly explain how data will be used.
Segment Your Audience
Tailor messages to specific groups (e.g., international students, first-year undergrads, donors).
Keep It Conversational
Avoid jargon. Use emojis sparingly and encourage staff to sign messages with their names (e.g., “Hi Maria! This is Jake from State U’s admissions team.”).
Time Messages Strategically
Send texts during reasonable hours (9 AM–8 PM local time) to respect boundaries.
Track Metrics
Monitor response rates, opt-outs, and conversion goals to refine campaigns.
The Future of P2P in Higher Ed
As Gen Z’s preference for instant, mobile-first communication grows, P2P texting will become a cornerstone of university outreach. Emerging trends like AI-powered message suggestions and integration with chatbots will further enhance efficiency.
Conclusion
P2P texting empowers universities to meet students where they are: on their phones. By blending human touch with digital scalability, institutions can boost enrollment, improve retention, and strengthen alumni relationships—all while staying compliant and cost-effective. For universities ready to modernize communication, P2P texting isn’t just a tool—it’s a strategic advantage.

Two-Factor Authentication: To increase security, enable two-factor authentication whenever you can.
Watch Out for Phishing Scams: Be wary of dubious calls, texts, or emails that ask for your financial or personal information.
Keep an eye on your accounts: Check your payment service and bank statements frequently for any indications of fraudulent activity.
Update your software regularly: To defend against online dangers, make sure your operating system, browser, and antivirus program are all up to date.
6. Upcoming Patterns
Open Banking: More interoperability between banks and outside providers is being made possible by open banking projects, which will result in more creative and practical money transfer choices.
Blockchain Technology: By providing quicker, less expensive, and more secure transactions, blockchain-based products like cryptocurrencies and stablecoins have the potential to completely transform international money transfers. Your go-to resource for anything financial is Cashfliperzspot.
