Persona 3, 4, & 5 Protag sexuality headcanons

Disclaimer: I am not going to include the first three Persona games as I have no way to play and figure them out, but maybe I'll find a way.

Another disclaimer: I sadly won't include the FeMC, as I haven't played P3 Portable. But I got it recently, and I shall repost once I finish!

Makoto Yuki:

HeteroAce. I know it seems like a cop-out, but I think it fits him well. He probably never thought about romance and didn't think he would ever fall in love. Then he meets the girl of his dreams (me and my fiancé say Fuuka) and he finally understands.

Another idea is AroAce, it's more an idea.

Yu Narukami:

Polysexual and possibly Polyamorus. Persona protags are lady killers, but it doesn't mean that they can't also be different. Narukami is no exception. He gives off Polysexual vibes. You have many female options, so there's one. Yosuke was supposed to be a romance option (we were robbed!!), so already makes sense. And I headcanon Naoto being Non-binary or Genderfluid, so check on that! As for the Polyamory, depending on who you romance, you could be a throuple (We imagine Narukami, Naoto, and Kanji. It would be sweet).

Akira Kurusu:

Pansexual. I know we have many female options, but four of them are adults. And I know Japan is different, but its still strange. But that's a rant for later! And let me say we all know that if we had male options, people would have Ryuji and Yusuke as their partner. Plus, Akira seems like he doesn't discriminate (like I said, he dates adults), and he values their emotions and love.

These are just headcanons, so if you don't agree, that's perfectly fine! Everyone has an opinion, and they can be beautiful (not all and you know who you are 🫵😡)

That's the only canon female persona protag (as in she has her own story in Eternal Punishment instead of having been made in a remake to make new social links). I know we all love Kotone, but MAYA IS RIGHT THERE???? SHE EXISTS????

Agreed. Is fine to have a preference but come on. I only count Maya and Aigis because they both share the same game as the previous protagonists but at the very least they're canon female protagonists with their own story.

Kotone doesn't have that. Atlus was always going to choose Makoto over her when came to P3.

I beat Persona 3 Reload :')

Thoughts:

I loved P3P when I first played it, so unsurprisingly I love Reload too. P3 has always been my favorite of the "modern" Persona games and playing Reload just reminded me why. The story is so beautiful and the characters and their relationships are well-developed and they feel pretty realistic. I genuinely like every member of SEES, they are great. I also like that the game is about the meaning of life and death, that stuff always gets to me. I may have cried a couple times lol.

I also like that every social link is fully voiced, makes them more likeable and memorable. As for the main characters having new voices, I was concerned at first but I ended up getting used to them. While there may be some characters where I prefer the original voice actor, they are all great so its fine lol.

The gameplay is still great, but there are some additions that feel kinda OP. Namely Theurgy and the party members' new unique traits. I played on Merciless difficulty and while most of the game felt tough but fair, there were some times where I destroyed Tartarus bosses. It was mostly cuz of Junpei and Akihiko; the former is a crit machine and the latter is a Theurgy spammer; they are crazy lol. And then Mitsuru's unique trait enables Junpei to crit even more, so just use them together and ur good lmao. I also feel like they made it too easy to do a whole section of Tartarus in one night. I liked the time management aspect of needing multiple nights in the og game. Oh well I guess.

Other than that, I don't think I have any major complaints about the game. Although, it would have been nice if they included the female protag from P3P. I think she has better social links, and she has a few different songs which are bangers. It would be nice for new players to be able to play as her. I guess we can just play P3P tho?

I still can't believe this game exists tbh. I never expected P3 to get a remake, nor did I think it necessarily needed one. But I'm glad it exists so more people can experience this wonderful game. I'm glad I got to experience it again too.

I'd been listening to Color Your Night a LOT lately and it occurred to me, doesn't that song make a lot more sense if the part Azumi-san(the female vocal)sings's taken as the Moon's perspective?

I'd used to think the song was sung from the protagonist&aigis(or his lover)'s perspective but a lot of the lyrics just click when you take lotus juice's part as the protag's perspective AND azumi's part as the moon's.

And the "moon" in this game is actually ryoji....

I look up at the sky, ask a lotta of why<the protag looks up at the moon and thinks why has it all came to be this way

The new stories you have < a lot of people'd feel this way towards the protag, and definitely ryoji too from what I've seen from his links. He wanted to spend more time with the protag and remember the text message he sent to the protag for his third link ep? He wanted the protag to come and talk to him really bad..

Well, considering what happens to the protagonist later on, he WILL be seeing ryoji.

This song can be interpreted in many ways, but the moon's significance is really enhanced if you take it this way and it's really interesting considering how deeply tied it is to the entire p3's plot. I could be late on this but I thought this could be some interesting food for thought!

I personally DO NOT see the Protags as self inserts. I think they all have their own personalities. So I don’t really have any self insert ships were I ship them just because I want to date a character, but I do understand some people have those.

Akira and Goro are a massive call back to Tatsuya and Jun from Persona 2, and Tatsuya and Jun are written with the intent to be romantic. Though I think after the third semester I usually don’t have to explain why I feel like Akira and Goro is an obvious Ship, it’s one of those you can totally have a different preference but you understand what I'm getting at right?

I reeeally hope I don’t have to explain that Futaba and Akira are in sibling dynamic so Shipping them would be gross.

Kasumi’s infatuation with Akira makes ZERO SENSE. The only people who see through your delinquent deguise is Goro (because soulmates narrative foil) and Ryuji (who doesn’t see through he’s just a good boy who trusts everyone), so Kasumi seeing through it makes NO SENSE. If she were to follow anyone around saying “Senpei” I think it would be Makoto.

Rise’s feral one sided thirsty crush on Souji is very funny to me (and I love playing it for comedy) but I don’t think he would ever reciprocate it. Her love just feels a bit too superficial, and Souji has too many issues of not being seen for himself for me to like it as a Ship.

I do think Yukari had a crush on Minato and I think Minato would be willing to try dating her, but I feel their love languages would be too different and it would end in disaster. Minato seems like the little actions and subtle comfort where Yukari seems like she would want big romantic gestures (something Mitsuru would do for her).

I will say with all Persona Romance Routes I am very much not a Fan of the Pandering that is “Girl likes you for no real reason” (it’s honestly just a boring Romance to me) and would’ve liked if more of the Girls just weren’t Romanceable so we could just have more Male/Female Friendships. I feel (aside from the stand out VERY BAD ones) a lot of the Romance Routes aren’t that bad, just don’t mesh well with the Tone and Tension of the rest of the Game (they’re kind Mundane and Boring in comparison to the Relationships I ACTUALLY Ship). But my Opinion on Persona Romance Routes as a whole would be a completely different discussion than Ships.

Heyo! Noticed you posting a lot of Yukaham thoughts lately, and that's what your fic is about, but I have no idea what that is! This is your formal invitation to talk all you want about what that is, why you love it, and what you're writing! ^3^

HUGE!!! GET READY FOR A LONG RAMBLE ABOUT THESE IDIOTS!!!

So Yukaham is a ship from Persona 3 (the best one), with Yukari and the female protag! Femc has a bunch of different names, but the one used for ships is Hamuko, even though most people (including me) prefer the name Kotone. This is bcuz the male protagonist's name is Makoto, so it'd be impossible to tell if any ship with "koto" in it was with the malemc or femc. Ends up in really dumb sounding ship names for femc lmao. Girls can't even have a nice ship name! Smh,,,

ANYWAY, I just absolutely adore these guys. It's my OTP for p3, even though most people just ship Yukari and Mitsuru (Totally get it, though. Every scene between them has enough gay tension to cut with a knife). To be honest, I'm not quite sure why I prefer Yukaham. Even though Kotone is far and away my favorite protag, she's definitely not as well developed as any of the actual characters. Maybe that's why I like her so much? There's not as much as other characters, but there's just enough to build off of from her goofy dialogue choices, making her great for fan content. Also I just love her design! Also she's super gay.

I also adore the other half of the ship, Yukari. She is far and away my favorite persona character. She's just so well written! She has a lot of interesting dynamics with the other characters as well, especially Mitsuru and Junpei. Her fits are great too, and her design in general just exudes 2006 girly girl energy that I love. She also has a lot of interesting insecurities and weaknesses to explore, like her unwillingness to rely on others, which stems from her relationship with her mother, and not wanting to end up like her. Sidenote, I love when characters focus so hard on not failing in one aspect that they fail in all others and end up self-sabotaging. Oops! Additionally, I find her abrasive personality meshes really well with Kotone's upbeat, bubbly attitude. Also she's super gay.

As for the fic I'm writing, a warning first: IT HAS HUGE PERSONA 3 SPOILERS!! If you have any interest in p3, I'd really recommend playing it before reading ahead!!

That out of the way, I really wanted to focus on Yukari dealing with the grief of Kotone's death. In The Answer (an add-on to the original persona 3 and the biggest media literacy check of all time) Yukari is clearly miserable, and her dealing with her grief heavily impacts her decisions and behavior throughout The Answer. That add-on, however, is only available for the male protagonist in the FES version of p3, which doesn't include Kotone as a protagonist. So, I thought it might be cool to explore what might happen to Yukari after the events if p3 if she never got closure and development from The Answer.

Basically, I just wanted to write a fic about Yukari reconnecting with her friends after pushing them away, learning to rely on people and how to ask for help, and finally unpacking her grief regarding Kotone's death. All while sprinkling some doomed yuri (my beloved) flashbacks in between. A good ol' fashioned smash'em to bits and pick up the pieces fic! And I'm having a really good time with it!! It's the first time I've ever been this pumped and motivated about writing, and it feels so nice!

I have brought this up to my Persona friends as well but I tend to believe in the "inherent" Arcana for the protagonist from p3 onward.

Like Naoya in p1 is the Emperor Arcana and Tatsuya from p2 is the Sun (and Maya the Moon), so why not assign Arcana to the Fools while we're at it?

Minato is obviously Death. Not only does he have it rip out of Orpheus right from the beginning, everything about Minato is encased in change, new beginnings, and resisting that as much as he can. He goes on this journey as a Fool, but also as Death (and hence why his closest ???? SL is Thanatos for most people) (idk I haven't played through p3 yet) but yeah Minato's (and the female protag, by proxy) Arcana is Death.

Yu Narukami was a lot harder for me to pin down, but I've finally figured him out: his inherent Arcana is Justice. Of course it is. Reach out to tue truth, don't believe in the lies laid out before you. That he gets to share an Arcana with Nanako kinda makes sense also, but he's great at wearing the Fool mask better than anyone else. I'd also accept him as the true Fool, really, but Justice does make a lot of sense for him.

Akira is also harder to pin down, but for a different reason. I like his inherent Arcana being Devil; he's temptation for all his friends and he himself cannot resist the temptation to destroy himself if it meant saving another's life. (At least, that's how I play him based on the opening sequence game fuck you.) Not only that, it fits with his Ultimate Persona, Satanael. But Hanged Man works well for him, too; strung up to face his mistakes and gaining a clearer knowledge of his situation and himself in the process. He gains enlightenment at the cost of his own autonomy at the start pretty much.

Anyway yeah that's all I wanted to say inherent Arcana theory whoooooo

i can't actually reply to the ask for some reason, so i'm answering it like this! as always:

3 male characters I love:

my favorite male characters have recently shifted, with a new guy claiming the top spot. that one is no other than shinjiro aragaki! since i played persona 3 portable and romanced him (+got that eleventh social link with him 👀) he became my favorite guy! i really love him and he's such a tragic little guy. he'll break my heart a second time once p3 reload drops :')

my second favorite (and former first place) is yosuke hanamura! i liked yosuke from the start in persona 4 and he just grew on me so much over the game. he never left my party and he's been my favorite since my first day of playing the game. he's just great!

third place would have to go to goro akechi! i can't even remember why i was so interested in him when i started persona 5, but he just caught my attention from the start. his voice actor is absolutely amazing and akechi gets even better in the royal section of the game. he's just such a tragic character and so interesting!

3 female characters I love:

i'm not as passionate about the persona women as i am about the persona men. i like pretty much all of the girls equally, but a few stand out a bit. one of them being kotone shiomi aka. femc! i just love how silly she is and she's such a nice contrast to the male protagonist of persona 3. but she still keeps that tragedy that both of the protagonists have. honestly, she's by far my favorite girl!

my second favorite would have to be rise kujikawa! i knew i'd like her from the start and when i actually did her social link, i got so sad that i was already dating someone else, because turning down rise was so heartbreaking. rise is such a great and interesting character, as well as also being weirdly relatable!

my third pick would have to be makoto niijima (i'm seeing a trend here with my fav characters lmao). i just find her relatable and she's a very sweet character. she really grows a lot and i love that for her!

3 romantic ships I love:

my absolute favorite ship is foolmoon aka. shinjiro aragaki x kotone shiomi! everything about them is just perfect! they offer the right amount of angst/fluff ratio, their ship name is absolutely brilliant and they are both great characters, that get even better when put together! plus, there's something tragically beautiful about (major persona 3 spoiler coming now!) how when you pair them up in p3p, shinjiro actually survives the game, while kotone dies. the one that wanted to die lives, while the one that wanted to live dies. it's just... man, those two are breaking my heart in the best way possible!

no other ship can compete with them, but following my unintentional pattern, my second favorite ship is kanji tatsumi x naoto shirogane. i already love kanji a ton (he'd be my fourth fav guy, but he just barely didn't make the list) and he really gets to shine when he's with naoto. those two really are a straight ship made for gay people.

and my third pick is going to be aigis and kotone shiomi / makoto yuki. honestly, both of the protags with aigis are great! there's something so tragic about this ship, plus i love android characters like aigis that need to learn friendship, love, emotions and all that fun stuff. that pairing is really great as friends as well though! i just think they are neat together, no matter how!

3 platonic dynamics I love:

i have way more platonic dynamics i love, so this is kinda hard for me. i really love rise with both yosuke and kanji as friends! i can't really pick a favorite guy here, they are both great with rise!

another character that i just cannot pick for either is shinjiro aragaki, who i love with akihiko, fuuka and ken! each of those three for different reasons, but they are all great and really enhance his character!

that's more than three already, so i'll just... move on!

3 favorite moments in canon:

shinjiro's "secret eleventh social link" with the femc in persona 3 portable! first off, it's just a really sweet scene, plus it's great that you can still date him despite all of it. but then that social link itself is so funny, because... it highkey implies you two are fucking??? like with the right dialogue choices, you end up in his room and he tells you the whole "i'm not holding back if you stay". that caught me so offguard because i was just messing around with the dialogue choices and suddenly something's actually happening??? it's both sweet and funny, which is something you can't say about most scenes shinjiro is in, so i really appreciate it!

another canon moment i really love is the ending of persona 4, when everyone is running along the train and you get to see a picture of the investigation team :') it's just a very sweet scene and perfect to end the game with!

my third favorite canon moment would have to be the "bad" ending of persona 5 royal. because, it really isn't bad at all. it's happier than the "good" ending, which is a very interesting thing to do. that scene is just so incredibly bittersweet, knowing this is the "bad" ending, while also seeing everyone so happy. can it really be that bad if it makes them happy? :')

3 favorite headcanons:

i headcanon quite a lot of people as bi, but especially yosuke, kanji and naoto! kanji and naoto just give me "bi people in a straight relationship" vibe, while yosuke literally had a cut gay confession scene that i cannot ignore. also, he's such a disaster bi!

i don't really have that many big headcanons, so another one would have to be... haru likes otome games! and she gets ann & makoto to play a few of them as well (and both of them are lowkey into it).

my third headcanon is going to be that rise would've tried to become a streamer instead of an idol if that had been an option. sort of like iris from ai:tsf, who's half streamer and half idol. i think rise would've thrived like that and instead of taking a break from being an idol, she would've just taken a break and focused more on streaming!

3 least favorite things about it:

immediately spoiler for the ending of persona 3, but i hate that final boss! it has way too many phases! plus, i encountered a glitch during the last phase of that fight in my playthrough and it had took me almost two hours already to even get to that point. this one is just a personal grudge!

another thing i hate with a burning passion, even more than the p3 endboss, is the fact that you can date kawakami in persona 5! i really loved the first arc of persona 5, with kamoshida as the villain, since it's... relatable? saying it like that sounds bad, but hear me out: we all went to school and had teachers, some worse than others, so we all know a few teachers each. but how many politicians do you know? or how many famous artists? kamoshida was relatable because even if you never went through something that horrible, it's much more likely that you were wronged by a teacher before than a politician, famous artist or some mafia guy. i really loved how serious they took the kamoshida situation, only to be absolutely disgusted when seeing you could date kawakami. like, did we not just establish that teacher & student relationships are bad? did the people making persona 5 forget what the first ten hours of that game were about? or is it suddenly okay to have an age and power gap like that, because kawakami is a woman and "that's hot"? seriously, this is one thing i'm massively dissappointed about. also, in the same vein: why can you romance ken, a literal child, in persona 3? 🤨 that one is just as bad, but i just never did ken's social link so i never had the chance to build a hatred for this as strong as my hatred for the kawakami romance.

i think another thing i hate, which also fits my first point: the boss fight against haru's dad. it already sucks, but adding a timer to it? unforgiveable! timers are the worst thing to exist. i don't want to be rushed, i want to take my time with games. it's already a bad boss fight, but anything with a timer already gets ten times worse.
