It’s sort of like what they have around the electronics in hospital rooms. The booths are pretty small, but if you’re really engrossed in what you’re doing it won’t matter.

As far as the safety, it’s not that much of a violent place to be. Sure, I’ve seen a people beat each other up for winning at a trading card game, but that’s to be expected. Weapons are taken at the door and locked up until you leave, so getting beaten with someones’ bare hands or theft is really your main risk. If you’re not vigilant of your belongings, they will get stolen. They have lockers for your stuff you can rent for 1eb an hour.

Notice how the place is really cheap to be, but the amenities are more expensive? That cheap price is what gets people in the door. We were going through the pictures of the day, the little “modeling shoot” she’d asked me to do for her, this afternoon after our morning classes at the conference. She was flipping through them on my phone - which she insisted we use - in trying to duplicate some of the shots she’d done at a photoshoot on this same exact beach, this little nature reserve, six or so years ago. Or was it two, or three? I had trouble pinning her down, on that one. Anyway, she wanted to put the pictures up on Instagram, she said, for a joke. Melissa had tossed the gauzy tapestry of her sarong over our heads, to keep us shielded from the late afternoon sun and able to more easily see the pictures on my phone's meager screen. “Y-yeah…” I replied, apparently agreeing to all this. Two more days? Just with Melissa? With Melissa, the beach, and her...her...

”Good..!” she chirped, jiggles again through her chest, “because I wayyyy overpacked. I have so many outfits I haven’t been able to wear yet...” Casually, she brushed a few grains of sand off her left breast, sending more seismic ripples through her tit. “And now I get to wear them just... for... you!”

“N-No! Really I w-w-wasn’t…!” I pleaded, as she already began to laugh, releasing my chin. I was flushing hard, my heart and stomach having dropped themselves onto the sand, out of my body. “Please, Melissa, I was just-“

I’m joking!” she laughed, reaching her hands behind her to gather her hair - and of course casually present her magnificent chest, “I know they’re totally a distraction. Dragon Hunt, an adventure for Shadowrun (1st Edition). Part 4. The Shadowrun within a Shadowrun

Here’s a Shadowrun adventure pitch:

A corp exec runs a secret experiment without their bosses’ knowledge, and it turns drek-house. To cover their hoop, they hire a team of shadowrunners to track down and eliminate any loose ends. Johnson wants it done with minimal bang-bang, hoping to keep things quiet. The team consists of:

Blackwing, Elf Assassin

Rhiannon, Elf Combat Mage

John Whitefeather, Former Tribal Warrior

Render, Troll Street Samurai

Sounds like a solid start to a run, with characters all Laubenstein illustrated.

Except in Dragon Hunt, the PCs are some of the “loose ends” that need to be wrapped up.

The Return of Blackwing

As promised in the first post, Blackwing is back!

Tagging along are three archetypes from supplements:

John Whitefeather and Render have the exact same stats as the Former Tribal Warrior (from Sprawl Sites) and Troll Street Samurai (from Street Samurai Catalog), just with some missing equipment.

Rhiannon is the Combat Mage (from Sprawl Sites) just turned into an elf (no ability mods) and with a minor tweak to skills (Street instead of Corp etiquette).

The backstory updates us on what Blackwing has been up to, which includes a major cyberware upgrade. Here are his stats from Bottled Demon:

The core book doesn’t give rules for removing/upgrading cyberware, only noting the costs for getting it installed (Protip: get all the cyberware you can at character creation, because once the game starts, surgery costs and recovery time is FRAGGING EXPENSIVE.).

The Street Samurai Catalog introduces optional rules for cyberware damage (to GM’s delight) and repair (to runner’s delight), alpha and beta grade custom cyberware (more expensive, less Essence cost), and brings us the first cyberware that can’t be upgraded (Boosted Reflexes, the dumb cousin of Wired Reflexes), implying cyberware that can be upgraded.

It wasn’t until Shadowtech (to be discussed in future posts) that it was made explicit that

Lost Essence Never Returns

“Removing previously implanted cyberware does not bring a return of the Essence spend for that cyberware. Essence, once expended, is gone forever.”

However, if you do get cyberware removed, you get a “credit” for what your spirit has lost in Essence, so you could swap out that Fingertip Compartment (Essence Cost 0.1) with a Mastoid Implant Speaker (also 0.1) for no extra loss of Essence.

So that’s the sitch for Blackwing: his essence starts off at 0.2 and ends up at 0.16, so only had a net loss of 0.04 Essence. All of his new cyberware is Alpha grade, however, so nothing he had before could be upgraded – they had to rip out the old stuff like ratty shag carpeting and lay down that new stuff like hardwood floors.

Alpha grade cyberware has a 20% reduction in Essence cost (so an item that would normally be 1 point of Essence would only cost 0.8), but costs three times as much. Let’s start the tab:

Drastic Invasive Surgery (since more than 1 Essence point is being implanted). Cost: 250,000 ¥

Recovery from surgery uses the same timetable as healing damage; since Drastic Invasive gives a Deadly wound, that’s a minimum of three days recovery in a Hospitalized lifestyle (once you get down to a Serious wound, you can heal up in a High lifestyle, which we’ll assume Blackwing has).

Recovery costs in Intensive Care (including doctor’s fees). Cost: 3,000 ¥

His new wares are (including Alpha grade modifiers)

Wired Reflexes (3). Cost: 1,500,000 ¥, Essence 4

Cyberears with Hearing Amplification. Cost: 22,500 ¥, Essence 0.24

Radio (headware). Cost: 12,000 ¥, Essence 0.6

2 Cyberarms with smartgun link and Increased Strength (3). Cost: 3,315,000 ¥, Essence 2.0

For a grand total of (surgery+recovery+new warez) 5,102,500 ¥ and a final Essence of… -0.84.

Blackwing should be a cyberzombie.

His listed Essence is 0.16, which is off by an entire point of Essence. Simplest way to reconcile this discrepancy is to say he only has one spiffed-up cyberarm instead of two, but that means he doesn’t get the bonus to Body that a pair of cyberarms gets you.

"You like long train rides, too, huh?"

"Quiet..." I repeated absently, my gaze wandering back to the darkness-covered world outside. "Trains are so loud, though. I like how they sound. As if the wheels on the tracks are singing a song."

His gaze rested on me, I felt it intensely and looked at him, eventually. Although we had the lights dimmed in our compartment I could still see his eyes. And like before they fascinated me. Usually I can't look people in the eyes for long. It always feels so overwhelming, distracting, downright unpleasant. Because of that they often think I'm not listening... But I understand a lot more when I don't have to look. With the Master it was different, as if his gaze wasn't constantly searching for a way to call me out, to tell me how inhuman I behave and rub it into my face. He just didn't care.

"That's a hellishly long ride to get rid of a person," he remarked after we parted from another station.

My gaze kept glued to the window, but I still nodded. The sound of the train lulled me into a light slumber, brought me back to some hours ago, when the Master had entered a bank only to walk over to the banker and had told him to hand him a hundred thousand Euros. "Well, you wouldn't remember. It all was based on a paradox, so it never happened."

Again I blinked. There was something in my mind, pieces that got put together, a pattern, evolving from the net of information and thoughts in my head. Then it clicked.

I swallowed and glanced away. Rain started to trickle down the window and I closed it, listening to the added sound of drops against glass. So soothing, distracting me from what was ahead.

"You're an odd one," the Master remarked quietly. "About to commit murder, but you don't even look bothered about it. And there you humans are so annoyingly moral."

"I don't understand moral," I softly admitted and shrugged. "There usually is no logic behind it. It's just things you don't do, because you... don't do it. But no one ever tells you, why."

The Master laughed quietly to himself and leaned back again, signalling the conversation to be over. I didn't mind, feeling tired anyway. Good thing those seats were long. I slipped out of my shoes, lifted my legs up, while taking my glasses off and placing them on top of the trash bin.
