I'm having a really good day! i got to see an osprey while at work, and from pretty close up! i usually only see them way up high, or way out over the water, but this was flying ahead of me, and maybe 10-15m away for about a minute or so. so heckin cool!
such a good day, i hope your day is good, too!
I used to survey osprey nests on the coast of Long Island, NY. Great birds!

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
As any fisherman knows, fish can be quite slippery. That's why, to help them grasp their prey better, osprey have a reversible outer toe! Apart from owls, they are the only raptor species to have this ability.

Osprey in the lower Chesapeake Bay have been experiencing nest failure, leading to a reproductive rate comparable to during the DDT crisis. But unlike during DDT, reproductive failure occurs not at hatching but while young are in the nest.
The culprit? Overfishing of menhaden (a fish species), which Osprey depend on in the lower, more saline portion of the Bay.
"The current fish availability is not high enough to allow osprey to reproduce sustainably.  Their young are starving in the nest – most within the first week after hatching."
The menhaden fishery is controversial. A popular bait fish for striped bass and other sportfishing, it is also crucial to many birds of prey along the coast.
In contrast to the lower Bay, Osprey in the upper bay rely on a mix of catfish, shad, and other species. These Osprey are experiencing stable population growth rates.
Bald Eagles, which often kleptoparasitize Ospreys, are also doing well. They are at total capacity in the region: essentially every possible territory is occupied.

LETS FUCKING GOOOOO
[Image description: A colored digital bust drawing of a smiling osprey. It is a buteo-like bird with a hooked gray beak, white feathers, and a brown mask on its face that then runs down its neck as a stripe. Its chest has some lighter brown speckles. The feathers on the back of its head are longer and form a crest at the nape and at the base of the neck respectively. It was green eyes with a blue pupil and a yellow star. It is grinning mischievously with its mouth open, as if it were screeching. The background is dark teal with a yellow circle around its head. End description]

Osprey in Yellowstone National Park, Montana, USA
Holly Mandarich
Conservation status: Least Concern (Population increasing)
Mass: 3 lbs (Adult)
Scientific name: Pandion haliaetus
Wingspan in feet: 5 1/2 feet
Class: Aves
Domain: Eukaryota
Family: Pandionidae
The osprey, also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range. It is a large raptor, reaching more than 60 cm in length and 180 cm across the wings. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts.
Ospreys prefer habitats with plenty of shallow water where fish are plentiful. They often built nests on small islands or structures over bodies of water that are difficult for predators to get to. Manmade structures such as power poles and other stable structures are common nesting sites.
The osprey's diet is almost exclusively fish, a unique characteristic among raptors. They are opportunistic about the species of fish they catch, but they can only catch fish swimming within three feet (1 m) of the water's surface. They rarely take fish over 16 inches (40 cm) long.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT OSPREYS PLEASE :D
Oh my god yay! (You have unlocked an unskippable cutscene)
So I first did some research on osprey a few years ago when I noticed one nesting near a resort my family went to each summer. They are such interesting birds! I had to double check some of my facts but looks like most of what I remember is still accurate. Here’s some of the fun facts I learned about them!
Osprey diets are overwhelmingly made up by fish but other animals around their chosen body of water like mammals and amphibians can sometimes supplement it.
Osprey talons have scales which go backwards as compared to most birds talon scales which make them great barbs to help grab fish from the water!
Osprey mate for life, and interestingly, usually return to the same nest every year and expand it! This was very interesting for me to find out since every year I noticed this growth of the nest I had seen! (You may notice how much of an interest I took in osprey nesting in the next few facts 😅)
In osprey pairs, the male is the one who both finds the site of, and gathers material for the nest and the female usually creates and builds upon the nest.
After a breeding pair stops using the nest they built the next generation of osprey will usually claim and continue to build on it for their chicks. Leading to huge nests developing where there’s a stable enough base to support it!
They lay clutches of 1-4 eggs at a time
Male Ospreys do a little display called a sky-dance for females where they hold food or nesting material and swoop up and down while screeching.
Due to the use of harmful pesticides ospreys used to be very endangered in North America but banning the use of those pesticides means osprey populations are doing great nowadays :)
In taxonomy osprey are classified as their own separate family, Pandionidae, although they used to be classified as a kind of hawk, or Accipitridae.
Thx for the interest! I’m sure that’s enough of an info dump for now. Enjoy the osprey facts :)

A Fresh Kill Osprey from Purbosthali (Chupi-r-Chor) The osprey (Pandion haliaetus), also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range. It is a large raptor reaching more than 60 cm (24 in) in length and 180 cm (71 in) across the wings. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts. The osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. It is found on all continents except Antarctica, although in South America it occurs only as a non-breeding migrant. As its other common names suggest, the osprey's diet consists almost exclusively of fish. It possesses specialised physical characteristics and exhibits unique behaviour to assist in hunting and catching prey. As a result of these unique characteristics, it has been given its own taxonomic genus, Pandion, and family, Pandionidae. see on Flickr Daily Note Every day, a photograph, a poem. Just down the block from us along the Columbia River is a platform with an osprey’s nest where each year the pair return from South America to breed and feed from the fish in the mighty river.
