there's this recurring thought that keeps me up at night for about 30 mins before i go to bed and it's about magayon, panganoron and pagtuga. if you're from bicol like me, you'll probably get this.
even after magayon lost everything but love and pain from her suitor and lover named pagtuga ang panganoron and how their names be translated. pagtuga meaning the action word for a volcanic eruption and panganoron meaning a light cloud or sky. now, here's the thought, magayon turns to be mayon over the passage of time and there's this phenomenon happens when there is a cloud covering the top of mayon – THAT'S PANGANORON something like hugging mayon or protecting her from seeing whomever visits the land/region that is not welcomed, and then, if mayon got disturbed to the point of eruption, PAGTUGA is present. so panganoron and pagtuga cannot be severed if one would assume how magayon live. im not saying and thinking it also that magayon/mayon needed those two men however, looking at it in different perspective, it's like she's summoning what those two men lived for and made it for herself.
wala lang. there could be more pero eto lang kaya ko
+ the translation of pagtuga can also be meaning of 'to confess' in some bicol dialects (if i still remember it right)
++ im only referring a bit of what the lore tells but i mainly just referred to the translation of the names

𝐀𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐠𝐤𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠
Ínot kong pinadangat an búlan sa madiklom na banggi.
Pano an panganúron nin mga bitú’on na nagliliwanag pero an liwanag kan búlan nangingibabaw asín bukod-tangi.
Nahiling kong malinaw an dalan asín an palibot kan sakong inaagihan.
Tinukdo sako kan saldáng an dalan pauli sa sakong istaran asín pinawi niya an lipot na sakong namamatean.
Napura an takot sa sakong isipan.
Nag-agi an mga aga na biyo akong nag-oogma ta an saldáng pirmi sanang yaon, maliwanag asín magaya-gaya an presencia.
Hanggang sa urualdaw, uran, kidlat saka dagulgol sana an nag-abot.
Salamat na sana ta nanumpungan ko an duwa asín inilawan an sakong dalan miski binayaan ako bigla.

I was honored to illustrate a piece for The Islands of Sina Una, a D&D Campaign Setting for 5th Edition that pulls from precolonial mythology and culture of the Philippines. This is the tragic story of the two lovers of Mt. Mayon, one the volcano, and one the smoke that billows out.
If you’re interested in precolonial Philippine mythos and D&D, please consider pre-ordering the book! Huge thanks to Lucia for organizing the project!

Buried Ruin
Tumblr media
A mountain created with two human hands The grieving father of a loving daughter Who could love this life no more Forgotten are their souls But long did they live out their lives
Atop their grave, the clouds met the earth As if greeting a familiar stranger They could dance together in bliss Until Time itself broke all predilection For anything sacred
Mortals below could only feel jealousy Because a connection as transcendent Could never be theirs to understand How their world must erupt with such despair
Such is the wheel that Death spins So playfully, the entity seemed innocent Never mind the blood trampled unto the soil For the mountains to find peace in the skies
“Destruction, hence, like creation, is one of Nature's mandates.” - Marquis de Sade

The Ancient Bicolano Deities and Creatures
(ALL ART BY AFRAN MARFIL)
Tumblr media
- "Gugurang"
Gugurang loomed high in the Bikol pantheon of gods. He was their (the people’s) benefactor, guide and defender against the god of evil, Aswang, who would anger Gugurang by inciting the people to rebel against the good god, do evil deeds and resort to sloth and easy pleasures. Seeing this, Gugurang would punish and pounce on Aswang and to his people, he gave protection and exhorted them to make sacrifices in order to appease his anger. The myths disclose him as a powerful and loving god who would vent his fury mercilessly on the transgressor but would shower them with gifts and protection in return. (Realubit, Bikols of the Philippines, p. 10).
It is believed that ancient people looked up to him with great respect as they fervently gestured to the skies and spoke with profound affection for a great lord whom they adored, revered, and feared.
Tumblr media
- "Asuang"
Brother of Gugurang; an evil god who wanted Gugurang’s fire, and gathered evil spirits and advisers to cause immortality and crime to reign; vanquished by Gugurang but his influence still lingers.
Tumblr media
- "Bakunawa"
Believed to be the cause of eclipse, Bakunawa is the deity of the deep and the underworld.
Tumblr media
- "Oryol"
A demi-goddess in Bicolano myths, she is mentioned in the Ibalong Epic. A wily serpent who appeared as a beautiful maiden with a seductive voice; admired the hero Handyong’s bravery and gallantry, leading her to aid the hero in clearing the region of beasts until peace came into the land
Tumblr media
- "Haliya"
Haliya is the masked goddess of the moonlight worshipped in pre-colonial Ibalon (present-day Bikol region) and in some parts of coastal Bisayas. Haliya was a warrior goddess who would wear a mask of gold to hide her beauty. In Philippine Mythology, Haliya was the name of a lunar goddess. She was said to be so beautiful that the sea goddess Bakunawa fell in love with her and sought her affections.
Tumblr media
- "Tambaluslos"
A tall humanoid creature from Bicol. Generally black in complexion, it has long and thin legs with big joints, hooves, long thin arms and fingers, and a mane that runs from the back of the head down to its buttocks. It also has wide protruding lips like an ape. Another strange feature of this creature is that it has a long wrinkled penis and loose testicles which dangle on the ground. The creature’s name is derived from this feature which is referred to as ‘luslus’ which means ‘loose and hanging’. The Tambaluslos chases people who wander in the woods. The only way to escape it is to take off your clothes and wear them upside-down. The creature finds this act very hilarious and it will laugh so much that its wide lips would cover its face, therefore preventing it from seeing the victim who in turn will have ample time to escape.
Tumblr media
- "Tawong Lipod"
The ''Tawong Lipod'' or wind people, is a race of mythological creatures in Philippine mythology, most prevalent in Bicol area they are the court servants and handmaidens of the lunar gods Bulan and Haliya. They are beautiful, supernatural beings, youthful and elegant, and superb in the art of dancing. They are the nymphs of the winds and clouds forever loyal to the moon gods. lithe beings with light-colored skin who inhabit the skies, and are often depicted taking flight. they are called Biraddali by the Tausug
Tumblr media
- "Daragang Magayon (Beautiful Maiden)"
The heroine that appears in the legend of Mt. Mayon. She grew up to be a very beautiful and sweet woman that struck the swains from faraway tribes who vied for her attention. When a war between her lover, Panganoron, and his enemy, Pagtuga, arise, her lover dies in her arms. In her grief, she grabs the knife used to kill Panganoron and stabbed herself. Magayon and Panganoron are buried together, their burial soon turning into what is now Mt. Mayon.
Some people say that it's a curse because she took her own life, but myths and legends say Magayon is the volcano and Panganoron is the clouds that surround the beautiful volcano.
Tumblr media
- "Triburones"
A shark, with razor sharp teeth,  that can fly and circle its prey from the air. ‘Tiburon’ is Spanish for ‘shark’, most English translations of the Ibalon use this name for the creature (Triburon). In Bikol, these creatures are known as Pating na Pakpakan. In the Ibalon epic, they were tamed by the warrior-hero Handyong.

PROSA: THE LEGEND OF MAYON VOLCANO
Tumblr media
The Legend of Mayon Volcano by Jerny Destacamento
Long ago in a place called Ibalon, there lived a beautiful maiden. Her name was Daragang Magayon (the lovely one). She was the daughter of Makusog (the strong one), chief of the tribe.
One day, Daragang Magayon strolled near the river. While crossing the river, she stumbled on a rock and fell quickly into the water. She was swiftly swept downstream by the current.
"Help! Help me!” she cried. Fortunately, her cries were heard by Pangaronon (the proud one) and his bodyguard Amihan (the cold one). Pangaronon jumped into the river and saved Daragang Magayon.
“Thank you for risking your life to save me”, she cried. “How can I repay you? My father is the chief of our tribe. Surely, he will reward your heroism whatever it may take.”
Her beauty immediately captivated Pangaronon. He realized that he had finally met the perfect woman for him. At the same time, Daragang Mayon was instantly attracted to him.
Panganoron asked Makusog’s permission to marry Daragang Magayon. But Makusog could not permit them to marry. The tribal law forbade marriage outside of the clan. As tribe leader, he had to enforce the law. Yet, as a father, he wanted to make his daughter happy.
Meanwhile, Patuga (the eruptive one) learned about Panganoron’s intention. Patuga was the most ardent suitor of Daragang Magayon. For years, he had been convincing her to marry him, but to no avail.
One night, Patuga and his cohorts kidnapped Makusog. Then, he sent word to Daragang Magayon that her father would die if she did not marry him. Without a choice, she acceded. Only then did Patuga release Makusog. Soon Patuga and Daragang Magayon were wed. But in the midst of the merrymaking, pandemonium broke out when Panganoron and his men arrived. Fighting ensued between the two tribes. In a few minutes, Panganoron fatally struck Patuga. However, during the skirmish, a poisoned arrow shot from nowhere, fell on Daragang Magayon’s breast.
Panganoron rushed to her aid and as he kneeled over the dying Daragang Magayon, an enemy hacked his head off.
After the battle, Daragang Magayon was buried and her death was mourned all over the land. Where she was put to rest, a mountain mysteriously appeared.
This mountain is now known as Mayon. It is said that even in death and in another form, she is still haunted by the men who loved her. When Mayon is said to erupt, this is Patuga challenging Panganoron. But when Mayon is calm, Panganoron is embracing her. The tears of Panganoron are shed as rain at times in his grief.
---

oKAY AJHASJKSAH HAHAHA i just got to open my laptop again, it's one of the few i really like which revolves around the Mt. Mayon here, which is one of the most known volcanoes here. it is said that daragang magayon and pangaronon were star-crossed lovers,,, pagtuga is magayon's suitor but she doesn't like him and one day, while bathing, she slipped and almost drowned if not for pangaronon saving her askfja they fell in love and eventually was about to get married (1/? maybe 2 or 3 AHAHA)
(2/?) so ofc pagtuga knew the marriage, kidnapped magayon's father and in turn, if she marries pagtuga, he will set her father free. pangaronon, then, went on their wedding day to take back magayon and they battled, pagtuga ending up dead because of pangaronon. as they ran to hug, an arrow struck magayon (1 source said it was pangaronon, but most of them said it was magayon who was struck) and was killed
(3/3) and while pangaronon was holding magayon, he was stabbed. they were buried together by magayon's father, and after years, it started rising, and turned into a volcano. It is said that the volcano is daragang magayon and the surrounding clouds is pangaronon (he's called ulap which is clouds in english) this story actually has a lot of versions but this is the one that i know of,,, and like it all ends the same way, like romeo and juliet
freaking pagtuga... 😾😾 ✊✊✊✊💢💢 i bet he doesnt even love magayon  where we u when shes drowning 😀,,okay BUT WHO STRUCK MAGAYON WITH THE ARROW AND WHO STABBED PANGANORON?? omMG but srsly tho dying but end up together as nature 🥺🥺🥺 URGH I LOVE IT !! now that i think abt it i went for the same trope when i wrote that made up legend shouto told yn in love at first legend 🤔🤔🤔 man that was interesting, and ive also once read abt a story of how sakura?(iirc) was borned(?is that the word---) and it was also bc of two lovers emerging together(?) ong idk i cant rmmber omg but its smthng like that,,

inktober2019 No.15: "Highs and Lows in the Earth". Today's prompt is #ancient . This is not just any volcano - this is inspired by Mt. Mayon in the Philippines! Mt. Mayon is famous for its almost perfect conical shape, and is also active. According to legend, it rose from the bodies of two star-crossed lovers Magayon and Panganoron, who met a tragic end.
I chose this title because, since prehistoric times our planet has been shaped by the constant movement of land and water, especially from the impact caused by volcanic eruptions.

( A starter for @multimentium‘s Alice Cullen with Magayon ! )
MAGAYON first heard a voice in her eternal DREAMS, a soft and gentle tone, almost like a little girl that was curious of the contents of the pits of the active VOLCANO. Then the VOICE became louder and louder and then... she had awoken. She realized the voice was not from her DREAMS but from... a visitor at the mouth of the volcano. But the moment she had arisen, the perfect cone-shaped began to rumbled and smoke rose from the pits. It had only been two years since she had last been disturbed. But that was because Panganoron called to her.
Rocks flew from the sides of the volcano as it SHOOK and QUAKED, lava rising from the DEPTHS of the EARTH. But the stranger, she could sense, was still there, unafraid. A figure rose from the lava before the pale girl-- a silhouette of a woman. As she approached her, the lava fell off from her head to reveal a face of a young woman. YOUTHFUL by face but older than the trees that surrounded the volcano. Long black hair nested upon her head that reached the small of her backside, clothed in ancient garments with exotic patterns and behind her ear... was a FLOWER. The image of which how Magayon last appeared as a woman...
Tumblr media
Despite how the VOLCANO seemed to be so full of WRATH, the woman instead SMILED at her and a FOREIGN set of words left her lips. She expressed her admiration of the woman’s bravery for facing the volcano but she also wondered... what was she? She was not like the villagers she had come to know so long ago, for no one then was as PALE as the Moon or her.
