Hello, I'm sorry for sending this now, I know you're busy. I just have a question regarding your "Parallell Paths" story. What sources did you use? I'd like to do some research on congenital syphilis in the Edo period myself
hello, hello!
I would be happy to share! I'm actually working on a ask for Parallel Paths, pt 2 set in the modern era, so this has come at the perfect time! Be warned, this is a bit of a research dump, but I hope you find something beneficial to your research. feel free to send any sources you come across as well! We can be research buddies.
Bulletin No.23 (u-tokyo.ac.jp) - a wonderful source utilizing the exhibition of various sites throughout Japan, including Tokyo. This source focuses more on the pathology, and skeletal remains. In this you will find the documents of examination including the age ranges (including small children), photographic evidence of the damage syphilis impacted on the inflicted (photographs of skeletal remains).
The History of Infectious Disease in Japan: The Answer Is in History — To What Degree Are Protective Hygiene Measures among the Japanese Effective? - Discuss Japan (japanpolicyforum.jp) - will contain mentions of other prominent disease of the period, as well as the more recent pandemic information. This was my starting point of finding resources (the mention of Tokugawa Hideyasu, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi gave me the best time measurements to calculate my eras to look in data books, as well as the introduction to syphilis being referred to as the Hizen disease).
237th_Special_Article_02_X.pdf (jef.or.jp) - pages 3 and 4 paints a small snippet of the day to day life of the average individuals that would become affected.
A Wish for the End of the Infectious Diseases | Edo no Taihen (great pivotal events of Edo) | EDO TOKYO Digital Museum - Historical Visit, New Wisdom. - depictions of the artwork during the outbreak eras that offered an insight into how the time frame affected the individual belief (such as the warding of spirits to prevent disease), plus the pictures are just breathtaking. Highly recommend flipping through if you're interested in the Edo period.
江戸物語 — Random Edo Period Fact of the Day … ... (tumblr.com) - speaking of, if you are interested in the Edo period--- you have to stop by this tumblr. This should take you directly to a small essay they wrote on syphilis as well as their resources (perfection by the way), but their site is just fantastic for Edo research.
Bodies and Borders: Syphilis, Prostitution, and the Nation in Japan, 1860–1890 on JSTOR - I don't know if you have access to a college database, or library database, but if you do consider giving this a look over! It reflects upon prostitution (the Red Light District).
Syphilitic infection in a pre-modern population from South Korea (19th century AD) (jst.go.jp) - kind of a lump sum of everything I've shared. While it is specifically tied to South Korea, syphilis had entered Asian in a nearly exact timing (all consuming) contains imagery of skeletal remains.
Yoshiwara District: Two Faces of a Coin – Digital Humanities and Japanese History (japanese-history.org) - does mention syphilis, but broke down the full expectations of the Yoshiwara District, the very same district in which Daki served.
Syphilis and seiseinyū: manufacturing a mercurial drug in early modern Japan | The Recipes Project (hypotheses.org) - the title really explains it.
The remainder of my research mostly just repeats everything that these articles expresses, or is tied to modern understanding of the disease (the spread of, symptoms, long term effects, and so on).

bridges that burn themselves (except there is no bridge actually burning lol)
It all began with the utmost, unavoidable injustice that tore the plan ahead for both of us. I've never had to grieve the loss of chances and opportunities and togetherness for just one person in the span of three months.
it was more than just an acquaintanceship.
it was a close-knit that made me willing to voluntarily give up early bed time routine, it was the kind of bond where my introvert self doesn't mind the exhaustion of being out and about. trust formed real-quick.
I, without hesitation, would admit that the way I've been treating almost every friendship in college is, uh, transactional. I've always calculated the ROI, considering both what they're able to give and vice versa in extreme precision. I know this is sacrilegious, but I'm not a monster, you know; it's just a protective shield I have, in the name of practicing detachment—my way of keeping my vulnerable soul alive.
But that detached, heartless mask is the very thing I'm unable to wear in front of this person. It's like a God-sent. God will, He sent me this person to unpack every wrong doing, every monster-like approach to my social life I've been doing, each and every one of my jerk move.
I'm all-exposed.
And yes, I'm ashamed, embarrassed, saddened to death to confront the kind of monster I've become. But I don't feel and think like it's the end of the world, I don't think the universe should punish me right here and now for all the sins I've committed, at least—at least, not in front of this one person.
I've finally become human. Again. After God knows how long.
Not that type of monster who navigates life in most bitter, crazy, dangerous way.
So if I ever become better, if my face ever lights up a bit more, if my tone of voice changes and sounded more positive now, it's all thanks to her. If my outlook on life has shifted—even a little bit, if not completely—if you hear and see me being more genuine in every step of my way, it's all, also, also thanks to her.
But if my voice sounds colder, if my shoulder tense deeper than before, if my eyes hold knife-sharp grudge, it's also, sadly, probably all thanks to her.
The realization that we won't continue in the same path still rings like a death note in both of my ears. To see, for the hundred-thousandth time in my life, the beautiful "what-ifs" evaporate like they don't matter—I'm so scared of turning into an even worse monster than before.
But I won't. obviously. 2024 is the last year I'll allow myself a dozen psychosomatic complaints in life, and letting grudge burn this 2025 resolution wouldn't be so cool, would it?
For whoever I'll end up becoming, just know that I started 2025 with this. With loose ends. With hopes left hanging in the air. With wishes that never come true. With friendship break-up threats. With uncertainty. I hate uncertainties.
with love and with uncertainty,
Nadia.

It is loud, and it is crowded, and everything is new. Again.
Ellie has been on edge all day, and when the lunch bell rings for her very first lunch at Peterson High, she is out the door and around the corner of the school building as quickly as she can move without attracting unwanted attention. Past the picnic benches, round to where the grass isn't quite as well trimmed and the growing trees and bushes muffle some of the constant noise. She trails her fingers along the tree-trunks and some low-hanging branches until she notices a space, between two trees and a bush, hidden on three sides and partially covered by a twisting branch on the last. She pushes the branch aside gently and ducks into the little space.
Sitting on the soft leaf-cushioned ground, she shuts her eyes, tunes everything out and breathes. Just breathes, slowly and steadily, in time to one of the wandering little tunes Mom used to sing.
When the nyhtegale singes, The wodes waxen grene, Lef ant gras ant blosme springes In Averyl, Y wene...

( she isn't exactly sure how long she's been dead, or where her body even is -- but she does know that her brother can't see her, and her mother's barely shed a tear. )

As much as Ellie loves cheeseburgers, she can only really stomach them around the dark of the moon. It's waxing now, and Ellie is craving fruits and veggies.
She is choosing among leafy greens, and feeling secretly proud that her own garden's yield is looking like it will turn out much better than grocery stuff this year, when she feels a familiar prickle on the back of her neck. She stills, then slowly looks around.
