NEW MAP: Europe 216: Caracalla’s Parthian Campaign (summer 216) https://buff.ly/2W6EvBt Following his Germanic War, Caracalla headed east to campaign against Parthia, now splintered between Shah Vologases VI, the usurper Artabanus IV, and the insurgent Sasanians. After Vologases agreed to cede political refugees to him and Artabanus agreed—or refused, sources vary—to give him his daughter in marriage, Caracalla attacked Artabanus and seized the city of Arbela, the proposed site of the wedding. #3rdcentury #ancientrome #ancient #ancienthistory #europe #europeanhistory #spqr #historian #historical #history #historybuff #historygram #parthianempire #instahistory #ancientpersia #map #mapmaking #maps #parthia #roman #romanempire #romanhistory #romanlegion #severan #romans #caracalla #strategy #vandals #worldhistory #newmap (at Erbil-Kurdistan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCdHL5AAn4X/?igshid=7kbefm22dooe

During one of his many trips around Ashgabat and Turkmenistan, Bayramov depicted the ancient city of Nisa on his canvas. A huge history buff, I am sure Bayramov was honoured to be present in such a significant cradle of civilization.
Nisa, located near modern day Ashgabat, is commonly known as the capital of the Parthian empire that existed from 247 BC to 224 AD. Situated at the crossroads of important commercial and strategic axes, this powerful empire formed a barrier to Roman expansion while serving as an important communication and trading centre between east and west, north and south.
In actuality, Nisa is two historical monuments, Old Nisa and New Nisa. Old Nisa was a large fortress with 8-metre walls and dozens of towers that protected royal palace, but was destroyed in 3rd century BC under the rule of the Sasanids. New Nisa managed to revive after being ruined by the Sasanids; it played a big role in development of the region and was destroyed in the end of 13th century by the Mongols.

The Parthian Empire in the 2nd century
The Parthian Kingdom (also known as Arsacid, by the name of its ruling dynasty) rose to prominence c. 247 BCE in the vacuum created by the collapse of the Seleucid Empire. In the centuries that followed, the Parthian Empire grew to encompass most of Mesopotamia and the southeastern part of Central Asia. The Parthians became a major rival for Rome in its drive for control of Armenia and primacy in the East until 224 CE, when the murder of the last Parthian ruler ushered the rise of the Sasanian Persian Empire.

NEW MAP: Europe 62: Battle of Rhandeia (15 Nov 62 AD) https://buff.ly/2Ad5ccj At first it appeared as though the Parthians might ignore the Roman intervention in Armenia (58–59 AD), but in 61 AD the new Armenian king attacked the Parthian client state of Adiabene. In retaliation, Shah Vologases invaded Armenia, restoring his brother Tiridates to power. The Romans responded by sending in two armies, only to suffer a humiliating defeat when one of their commanders was surrounded and forced to capitulate at Rhandeia. At the peace treaty which followed, Rome agreed to acknowledge Tiridates as king of Armenia while Tiridates agreed to swear loyalty to Rome. #europe #history #welovehistory #welovemaps #map #ancienthistory #classicalera #ancientworld #ancienteurope #ancientarmenia #europeanhistory #parthianempire #november #november15 #parthia #romanempire #romans #roman #ancientrome #romanhistory #nero #maps #newmap #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Malatya, Turkey) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2U1ZG2gNVC/?igshid=d2wfg34ag1q8

NEW MAP: Europe 59: War of the Armenian Succession (31 Jul 59 AD) https://buff.ly/2ZyTEhZ In 54 AD the Armenians rose up against Rhadamistus’ rule, restoring the Parthian prince Tiridates to power. The Roman emperor Nero—who had succeeded Claudius that year—asked Tiridates to Rome to receive his crown as a client king, but was rebuffed. In response, the Romans invaded Armenia, deposing Tiridates and placing their own candidate on the throne. #europe #history #welovehistory #welovemaps #map #ancienthistory #classicalera #ancientarmenia #europeanhistory #hyrcania #parthianempire #july #july31 #nero #parthia #romanempire #romans #roman #ancientrome #romanhistory #emperornero #maps #newmap #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Artashat, Armenia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1wqh8wgJDa/?igshid=ki25mcplc312

NEW MAP: Europe 54: Iberian–Armenian War (15 Jan 54 AD) https://buff.ly/2MwwPp3 Exploiting Parthian instability, Rhadamistus of Iberia invaded Armenia in 50 AD and executed the king, even though both were Roman allies. Although Rome accepted Rhadamistus’ power grab, Parthia—by now under the firm rule of Vologases I (51–78)—did not and in 52 AD marched into Armenia with their own claimant, Vologases’ brother Tiridates. However, the expedition was crippled by winter and disease, forcing Tiridates to withdraw the following year. #europe #history #welovehistory #map #ancienthistory #classicalhistory #armenianhistory #europeanhistory #january #january15 #kushanempire #margiana #parthia #parthianempire #romanempire #romans #roman #ancientrome #romanhistory #maps #newmap #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Artashat, Armenia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1eq9S8AQeV/?igshid=85n33v01mjud

NEW MAP: Europe 36: Civil Wars of Artabanus II (29 Feb 36 AD) https://buff.ly/2XRYJll From 10–38 AD Parthia was dominated by King Artabanus II, who gained power when he overthrew the Roman-raised Vonones I in the civil war of 10–18 and regained power after being usurped by another pro-Roman king, Tiridates III, in 36. A third civil war would break out later that year. Despite repeated attempts to expand into Armenia, Artabanus’ reigns saw an overall weakening of Parthian power as the empire fell victim to increasing infighting. #europe #history #map #ancienthistory #classicalera #persianempire #kingdomofarmenia #ancientarmenia #cappadocia #europeanhistory #february #february29 #adiabene #atropatene #parthianempire #parthia #romanempire #romans #roman #ancientrome #romanhistory #maps #newmap #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Ctesifonte) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0EkEveAUK_/?igshid=a5z1i9u6ht3m
