Navigating the Waters of Time:
Balancing Future Goals and reflecting on Past lessons in Swim Training As a swimming coach, I find that the concept of time holds a unique significance in the world of swim training. The fluidity of water seems to mirror the ebb and flow of our thoughts, often oscillating between reflections on the past and visions of the future. In the context of swim training, the question arises: do we think…

The past is prologue— a preface to the future. It must always be revisited and lessons be remembered. Some wounds cannot heal when left untreated and we all know what happens when a deep wound festers. #past #history #prologue #pastlessons #guidesforthefuture https://www.instagram.com/p/By5SiLInz0K/?igshid=u66b50qwqp02

We only make a mistake once. If we did the same mistake again, it's not a mistake anymore. It's a choice.

We respond to what happens by building defenses, coming from a place of reaction, and expecting the past to repeat itself. Don't let the past block your future let it serve you best by ushering you into your future. #pastlessons #history #growthmindset #thewholeslefnow #thebestyou #education

This medicine of a meditation is the kind that we hide from. The truth of the matter is every single of us is a composite of remembering and amnesia.
I admit that I remember less of my upbringing than I care to. It was such a traumatic affair peppered with spots of joyous light. When my parent's relationship imploded and finally exploded, my world became a gory black and white movie with no sound. I thought I was the cause. How I came to that conclusion I don't know. I was the first of six siblings at time.
There are many parts to what family was to me. I lived in the Afrikan lung of family wrapped in cultural heritage, religious inclinations and a colonialist worldview. I saw too many toxic behaviours around money, love, caring, and identity.
Without my knowledge I became an amnesiac of sorts. Now I know that to protect myself I unconsciously choose to forget the darts that hit my heart, the relationships that burnt me and the obligations that were foisted on me. I left 'home' to survive.
Both my parents are now deceased and after they left I began to understand them better. My life is in a state of both remembering and forgetting and even so, I am grasping what is mine from what isn't. The past is a reference point for me.
I don't know what the lessons of the past hold but I am glad that I am here on my journey to me. The work is real. Many bags to unpack. Some cycles I have killed dead. Others are still appearing.
I am not my parents. I am me. I am a life partner and father now and those lessons from the past inform how I choose to cultivate my relationships, home and hope.
I will never get over it, however, I am getting through it.
The buck stops with me.
