Review : The First Purge (2018)

After 4 films, the Purge series has managed to do something rare : improve with each film.  With so much forward momentum, fans of the series probably were curious about the origins of the Purge, and how it became what we’ve seen in the previous three films.  With art imitating art imitating life these days, the table was set for The First Purge to add further insight to the series, while dually serving as a statement on our current political situation.

In light of civil unrest and heavy dissatisfaction with the political state of America, a new political party know as the New Founding Fathers of America, or NFFA, has risen to power, including being the party of the newly elected president.  In hopes of quelling the unrest, the new party in power makes a bold first step : a sociological experiment to take place over the course of 12 hours in Staten Island where all crimes, up to and including murder, are legalized, in hopes of people purging their bad practices.  Those on the fence are incentivized to take part with hopes of monetary gain, while several bands of people are split between riding out the night peacefully and taking up arms to defend their territory.  Among the peaceful citizens is Nya (Lex Scott Davis), a young woman with a checkered past hoping to keep those she cares for safe, especially her brother Isaiah (Joivan Wade) and her neighbor Dolores (Mugga).  Others, such as gangster and drug kingpin Dmitri (Y’Lan Noel), have their sights set on keeping their crime infrastructure in tact and safe from opportunists.  As Chief of Staff Aldo Sabian (Patch Darragh) and Dr. May Updale (Marisa Tomei), the architects of the experiment, oversee the proceedings (and, in the case of Sabian, attempt to control them), the residents of Staten Island face the biggest challenge of their collective lives, and become the first to take part in what will eventually become the nationwide practice known as the Purge. 

The origins of many ideas that permeate the universe of The Purge are given chronological origins within this film.  Obviously, we are given the roots of the NFFA and the Purge itself.  We are shown that the poor and disadvantaged, and their subsequent removal, has always been the goal of the Purge.  We are shown that, from the very beginning, many people chose to hide their identities, and those not connected to the military or government chose to commit minor crimes, with the exception of the occasional violent citizen.  We’re even shown that, from day one, the NFFA sent infiltrators among the citizens to stir up the violence.

The commentary on modern day politics that runs throughout the film brings the closest connection of real life and the Purge films found in any of the previous narratives.  Some of the imagery is symbolic, such as church shootings, the constant presence of demonstrators as a reaction to those in power, the presence of hate symbols such as the KKK and Nazis, and the juxtaposition of those symbols against American standards like baseball or housing projects.  Other references are much more specific, like Nya’s referencing her sexual assault attacker as a ‘pussy grabbing mother fucker’, direct references to mercenary groups like Blackwater used to do government dirty work, and the sweep and clear nature used by said mercenaries to eradicate the residents of the housing projects. 

The First Purge has one of the strongest casts to appear in any of the films to date.  Y’Lan Noel brings a strong anti-hero vibe as Dmitri, with his conflicted nature of hurting his community for financial gain versus protecting his community eventually taking front and center.  Lex Scott Davis brings genuine heart to the film, wanting to take care of everyone she possibly can for improvement of the greater good.  Jovian Wade plays his role of someone in over his head to a tee, working perfectly opposite Rotimi Paul as the most direct natural threat of Skeletor.  Mugga brings much needed levity to the mostly bleak film.  Marisa Tomei and Patch Darragh provide a parallel power struggle of science versus politics, with politics sadly winning out over reason and logic.  

The First Purge continues the trend of bringing new ideas to a deeply expansive and immersive lore, and doing so successfully.  I can’t imagine there will be many more films in the series, possibly two more if I had to guess, but at this point, I’m sold wholly and completely.  The filmmaker in me even has an idea for a final film in the series... here’s to hoping I make it to that level before the series is closed out!
