Lady Cust's Great Auk egg
An Egg of the Extinct Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis), Iceland, 1844
Eggs of the Great Auk are regarded as being among the most sought-after of all natural history objects, due to their exceptional rarity. The Victorians thought of them so highly that every surviving egg was listed and its whereabouts carefully recorded. At this time more than 60 had survived and each of these had been collected in the years before 1844, when the bird itself became extinct.Today, almost all of those that still exist are in museums from which they will never be released with only four remaining in private hands.
The Great Auk was a flightless, aquatic bird measuring approximately 2½ feet tall and weighing on average 11 pounds. With a black body and white underbelly, its appearance fell somewhere between a puffin and a penguin. When hunting, the Great Auk employed a hooked beak and powerful swimming stroke to stalk fish and crustaceans. Native to the cold waters of the North Atlantic, their nesting areas ranged from the coasts of Newfoundland, Maine, Massachusetts, and even South Carolina and Florida, to Iceland, the Faroe Islands, the eastern coast of Greenland, and the islands off the coast of Scotland, namely the Orkneys and St Kilda; during the winter months they were known to go as far west as Norway and Denmark, and skeletal remains have been found as far south as Gibraltar.
Great Auk pairs mated for life, laying but one egg per breeding season on small islands and rocky coastlines. The longitudinal, pear-shaped eggs were perfectly adapted to roll in tight circles, greatly reducing the chance of being lost off a cliff edge. Parents would take turns incubating the egg, all while benefitting from the protection of dense social colonies and few natural predators.
Historical records indicate that the Great Auk showed no innate fear of humans, and this—coupled with their slow and awkward movements on land—greatly increased their vulnerability to extinction as Europeans began to massively exploit the species for food, for their downy feathers, and horrifyingly, for kindling in fires, as their very oily feathers were highly flammable.
On June 3, 1844, the last known breeding pair of Great Auks were killed off the coast of Iceland, on Eldey Island, after being captured by fisherman, making this incredibly rare specimen a poignant reminder of humanity's responsibility to conservation and environmental stewardship.
Because of their tragic history, Great Auk eggs are exceedingly rare, and even more so in private hands. Thanks to the efforts of early passionate ornithologists, in particular Symington Grieve, Edward Bidwell, Paule Marie Louise & John Whitaker Tomkinson, Ch. F. Dubois, and Leon Olpho-Galliard, surviving specimens of skins and eggs, including the present example, are well-documented in the literature.
The first record of Lady Cust’s Egg is that it was bought in Paris during the first half of the nineteenth century by the celebrated naturalist William Yarrell who presented it to Lady Cust. No-one knows quite why he did this, but she kept it for many years. At her death it passed into the collection of another well-known ornithologist, George Dawson Rowley, and it has passed through the collections of several other illustrious naturalists (including Captain Vivian Hewitt) in the years since his time.
The egg is listed and its story told in Symington Grieve’s celebrated monograph The Great Auk (1888), P. and J., Tomkinson’s Eggs of the Great Auk (1966) and Errol Fuller’s comprehensive book The Great Auk (1999).

Annie Hall (1977) Director - Woody Allen, Cinematography - Gordon Willis "I feel that life is divided into the horrible and the miserable. That's the two categories. The horrible are like, I don't know, terminal cases, you know, and blind people, crippled. I don't know how they get through life. It's amazing to me. And the miserable is everyone else. So you should be thankful that you're miserable, because that's very lucky, to be miserable."

“My whole life I have LOVED music with everything in me. It makes me feel emotions I never thought possible. I was brought to gigs as a kid and I was lucky enough to be brought up on some of the greatest bands/singers of all time. When I was younger, I always appreciated the art of music, song, lyrics, stage design etc BUT ….. It’s only been in the recent years that I’ve come to know about the sheer amount of hard work that goes into the making of a record…. And I don’t mean from my end. I’m just a small part.
This is where I NEED to mention everyone who put their time and effort into this record. huge thank you Julian Bunetta, Greg Kurstin, John Ryan, Jamie Scott, Mike Needle, Dan Bryer, Scott Harris, Teddy Geiger, Tobias Jesso Jr., Alex Eskeerdo (ZAZAAA), Ruth-Anne Cunningham, Julia “Hules” Michaels, Sarah “Doug” Aarons, Amy Allen, Mozella. Also, all the love to the man who makes such a massive difference to these tracks when they are mixed - Spike Stent. Musically and production wise, the above people helped me so much in the making of this record and I’m so happy that these people are my friends and we get to make music together in some capacity.
I’ve had so much fun making this record. Writing some songs was very challenging emotionally, but aside from that, I had the most fun ever. From starting the record in my living room alone, to writing in songs in the Bahamas, London and LA. There was a sense of freedom in my head this time round. I just wanted to go into the studio, jam out, sing whatever melodies into a microphone and work with great people and this is what I’ve come up with.
The phrase “Heartbreak Weather” correlates with all the different types of emotions you go through ‘post break-up’. There are stormy days but there are also really sunny days and I wanted to write songs from all different angles.
HUUUGE thank you to my Modest! managers Richard, Harry, Will, Lisa, Ant, Sarah and especially the man who has been there with me all the way through this, Marco. Also, thank you to my chief “single picker” Mark Mac (he will love this mention more than most). Thank you to my assistant Tara “Tazler” for basically running my life on a daily basis and for being a great friend.
Capitol Records - you are like my family and every artist you work with says the same. You are simply the best team I’ve ever worked with. Ashley Newton, once again this album wouldn’t have been possible without, you are one of my all time heroes. Steve, Michelle, Mitra, Robbie Mcintosh, Greg, my queen Ambrosia, Kieran, Jen, Nikki and all the amazing staff/friends that have worked so hard for me over the past years …. Thank you all SO SO much. Thank you also to all the Universal teams across the world that help spread my music across the globe - your work never goes unnoticed or unappreciated.
My touring crew. We have a great little team now and we’re going to keeping having a lot of fun along the way. Massive thank you to our unreal tour manager and my good friend Paul Symington, our tour mammy Ying looking after us and the whole crew who works relentlessly to ensure our show sounds and looks amazing. Ree, Ellie and Trudy - than you for always making me look good. Jarv and Basil thank you for keeping us safe and of course the boyos, my band. Jakey C, Bird, Louis, Torjy, and Connor - you guys are ridiculously talented musicians and even better guys. Let’s give the people their value for their money on tour in 2020 and the years beyond.
And last but most importantly, thank you to You - the fans. You beautiful people have been with me since I was 16 years old and I can’t thank you enough, this album definitely wouldn’t have been possible without you guys. You inspire me to write music and I always want to please you. Love you all soooo much. Let’s take this baby on the road, dance, cry, tear the roof off the place, do whatever you want ….. Hope you enjoy this record and I hope you can hear how much fun I had making it.
Love you,
Nialler x”
- Heartbreak Weather thank you’s

Jean Paul Baeck spricht Sherlock Holmes Freund Tom Millington.
Klasse!

Beach Slang @ House of Blues - Chicago - 4/6/17
Just a couple iPhone pics below - HOB can be a pain in the ass with cameras - detachable lens or otherwise. I don’t bother there anymore…
The last time I saw Beach Slang half the band members were different. I was thrilled to finally see these guys (Bottom Lounge) -  I’d heard great things and loved their EP and new record. At that point I’d had no idea what an incredible front-person James was, and that he could carry them all on his shoulders and audible quite nicely if he needed or wanted to. That ability came in handy over the last year, because the band saw their drummer depart, and their guitar player relieved of his duties due to allegations he sexually assaulted a girl. Beach Slang had tour dates already booked, and so James took his guitar, kept those dates, and played them as “Quiet Slang,” guitar only versions of the band’s songs. As if those blows were not enough, one more kick in the teeth came when all of James’s guitars were stolen. (I cannot put into words how much stealing musicians' gear fucking pisses me off, BTW. You have to be a certain kind of fucking asshole to take a person's creative extension and livelihood. Steal his car: he can take a bus. Steal his guitar and you fuck over a lot of people. Not to mention the impact of the emotional attachment. But I digress….). The one silver lining was Tommy Stinson reaching out with one of Paul Westerberg’s guitars, and one of his own basses. If you know anything about James and Beach Slang you know his affinity for the Replacements. That was a wonderful end to a shitty story, if there could be one…
Minus the Bear headlined this show. I literally knew nothing about them. I was really just coming for Beach Slang’s set (so I scooted to the back of the room after Slang was finished). I walked in at the end of Bayonne (who I kind of enjoyed!). As Beach Slang was taking the stage, a guy with a very thick accent to my right started screaming and waving.“CULLY!! CULLY SYMINGTON!! AYE MATE!!!” !!!!!! “Wait - what did you say? That’s Cully Symington??”(I couldn’t see Cully’s face - his symbol blocked it completely). “Yeah!”
I seriously had no idea Cully was drumming with them. He did the whole 2012 Afghan Whigs tour, among other things. After digging around the internet, I found that this apparently was posted about quite a bit. I left Instagram in 2013, and Facebook in 2015. So unless Twitter’s algorithms allow me to receive information, I miss many things…waddya gonna do…
So….the show was fun, and the new guitar player holds her own. Many Rob Thomas/Santana jokes, a few about Jame’s hair, a fan hug, a threat of a fan hug, a list of who people are telling James he looks like (someone offered Michael J Fox, which he has added to the running list…), and about a 40 minute or so set. They did say they were planning a fall tour as headliners, and yesterday they posted some current headline dates (none of which are near me…). Looking forward to the fall and a much longer, fuller set.
