So our friends had us come with them to the city Friday night to Cobb’s Comedy Club to watch a live podcast for Dumb People Town. They also had a special guest, Paul Scheer, whom I remember from VH1’s Best Week Ever. Then today we were watching the most recent episode of the Good Place and who pops up, Paul Scheer. Then we start watching season two of Future Man and totally forgot that Paul Scheer was in that too.... kinda creepy if you ask me.

Archenemy (2020)

I’ve got to praise Archenemy for its ambition and Joe Manganiello’s performance. Unfortunately, aside from a neat premise - that doesn’t pan out in the end - there’s just not much here for you unless you really want an indie-superhero movie.

In another dimension, Max Fist (Joe Manganiello) is a superhero who narrowly manages to save his world from destruction. In the process, he falls into our universe - powerless. Living on the streets and rambling about things no one understands but him, he catches the attention of Hamster (Skylan Brooks), an amateur vlogger/street journalist. This friendship couldn’t come at a better time. Hamster’s sister Indigo (Zolee Griggs) has crossed her boss drug dealer (Glenn Howerton) and he wants his money back.

It’s cool to see someone other than the big studios take a crack at the superhero genre. There’s so much you can do with the idea of lone vigilantes with powers. We haven’t seen the down-on-his-luck hero thing quite like this and director/writer Adam Egypt Mortimer plans on expanding this universe into a trilogy (with 2019’s Daniel Isn’t Real being the first chapter), which is an exciting idea. I just wished I liked this movie more.

This is very much an example of a film that needed just a bit more to be what it wants to be. Whenever we get flashbacks to the universe from which Max Fist originates, it’s in an animated style that unfortunately, looks like something you'd get from a talented college animator who ran out of time. You can tell every shortcut possible was taken to make the characters move, from rotoscoping the faces to using pre-rendered assets and resizing them as necessary (there are a lot of pixellated patches of blood), and using wild colors to compensate for the lack of detail in the backgrounds. These scenes have a certain stylish charm but not that much charm. Rather than get you pumped, they make your heart sink. There’s no way a movie whose budget is this tight will deliver on the superheroics it’s deliberately avoiding but wishes it could show.

Rather than deliver spectacle, Archenemy aims for low-to-the-ground thrills through its characters. These are also a mixed bag. Hamster walks into the viral post-generating website Trendible, tells the manager (Jessica Allain) he’ll be a huge asset to them and is hired on the spot. Even Facebook asks you for a phone number before you can open an account but these guys? They’ll give an internship to anyone who walks in. It’s small but a good example of the way the movie just doesn’t quite feel right. The characters’ dialogue feels overwritten, people either over-react (Hamster) or under-react (Indigo). The scenes where Max shows off his non-abilities lean towards the contrived. At least the combat is appropriately gritty and well-choreographed, that's a plus.

Archenemy isn't a bad movie. I’d even recommend it as a rental to those who like the way it sounds. Just know that you probably won’t remember it down the line. Still, you could do way worse. (March 30, 2021)
