Antz (1998)
Tumblr media
I wish we'd get more animated films like Antz. It’s got a distinct look, the voice actors are perfectly cast, the story has many smart and unconventional developments throughout. It's may not appeal to small children but it isn’t only for adults either.
Zee (voiced by Woody Allen) is an ant with a lot of questions. Why does he have to dig dirt all day? Why does he have to slave for the good of the colony? Isn’t there more to life? When he impersonates a soldier ant and winds up stranded outside the colony with Princess Bala (voiced by Sharon Stone), they go on the search for "Insectopia", the fabled land of food and plenty.
This picture is not like other children’s films where ants are just little people who drive little cars on their way to work while exchanging puns about picnics and bugs. It feels as though writers Paul and Chris Weitz and Todd Alcott wrote down everything that could happen if your protagonist was a neurotic, pessimistic ant and then took the time to figure out where this character would go from there. Queens, ants' ability to lift much more than their weight, picnics, going to war with other insects, the different “castes”, their size, and the fact that there are millions of them living together all play a part in this story.
The choices of music, the humor, the story's tone give Antz an identity. Sure, there are big names in the voice cast – Sylvester Stallone, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lopez, etc. - but these are not just names to put at the top of the movie poster. Stallone is perfect as a soldier ant, he just has that kind of voice of a simple-minded drone whose sole objective in life is to kill and then return home without thinking about what he just did. Gene Hackman as a general? He was born to play the part. It brings me back to Disney's Aladdin and its inspired casting of Robin Williams as the genie. While Woody Allen is once again playing the same character he always does, it's what he's best at. No one else would fit his role as well.
This is a great-looking picture that uses its medium well. The people in 1998 knew what limitations they had and kept them in mind. You won’t see a single human face in this film, which makes sense in this world of insects.
It’s a shame this picture was released so closely to A Bug’s Life and was all but squashed at the box office. As audiences members, the only thing we need to care about is how good the movie is. Now that Antz is on home video, it’s your chance to see this underrated, slightly more grown-up animated feature. It’s consistently funny and sharp. (On DVD, November 18, 2016)

8/10 #americanpie #chrisweitz #paulweitz #jasonbiggs #chrisklein #seanwilliamscott #menasuvari #movies

American Dreamz (2006)
Tumblr media
I came into American Dreamz with low expectations. While I was more pleasantly surprised than not, this film aims at too many targets and sabotages its satirical point in the process. It’s good. It could have been great.
The film follows four characters: Newly re-elected U.S. President Joseph Staton (Dennis Quaid), who suddenly decides to start reading the newspaper and care about what other countries think about America; Martin Tweed (Hugh Grant) the bitter, cynical, and self-loathing host of American Dreamz, a weekly television show not unlike American Idol; Omer Obeidi (Sam Golzari) a would-be terrorist who accidentally ends up competing on American Dreamz; and Sally Kendoo (Mandy Moore) a scheming young woman sees the show as a gateway to fame and money.
Something needed to be cut from this film. I would've chosen the subplot about the US President suddenly realizing that he’s been a buffoon his entire career. While topical in 2006, it doesn’t contribute to the story. The bulk of American Dreamz centers around the titular show. What ties the President to the singing competition? Only his appearance as a guest judge during the final round. That could have been achieved without any subplots and would've done two things. First, it would have given us more time with the film’s most interesting characters, Omer and Sally. Secondly, it would have trimmed the 107-minute running time. I get what the goal was, but it belongs in a different movie.
American Dreamz is at its best when it focuses on Sally and Omer. The two different characters balance each other well. Omer’s story is ludicrous. He’s accidentally selected to compete in the most American competition there is and if he wins, he’ll be charged by his terrorist brethren to blow himself up on live TV, killing the president in the process. You might have mixed feelings about him if he wasn't being coerced into the assassination plot or if he was the least bit frightening. He’s humble and only wants to sing his favorite musical numbers without fear of persecution. There’s something funny about a grown man being bullied into competing in American Idol. On the other side, there’s Sally. She’s not up to anything criminal, but she might as well be. She’ll stab anyone in the back to get to the top, which makes for some darkly funny moments with her boyfriend, a moron named William Williams (Chris Klein).
The picture’s uneven. The stuff with the President is disposable and the ending is a misfire. It's like it was hastily re-written to leave you feeling differently than was originally intended. Considering how much disdain writer-director Paul Weitz seems to have for the American Idol-style competition and the people associated with it, I wouldn't be surprised if the "happy" conclusion was mandated by a focus group-obsessed studio. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it more than I didn’t. I did laugh and the moments where it satirizes the show are on-point. I'll give American Dreamz a mild recommendation. Admission
Tumblr media
1 hour 47 minutes
Rated PG-13 (Language and Some Sexual Material)
Directed by Paul Weitz
Starring Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Michael Sheen, Wallace Shawn, and Lily Tomlin
2 out of 4 stars
ON DVD NOW.
One word I forget to use in my reviews is contrived, probably because I always forget what it means. Dictionary.com defines it as "obviously planned or forced." When I was a kid and I tried memorizing big words (because I thought I was going to fail the SATs) I'd always use contrived without knowing what it meant. Now that I've seen Admission, I have the utmost right to use the word as much as I'd like in this review. The movie isn't as dreadful and boring as its trailer makes it look. Tina Fey is in it, so right away we know it's going to be at least a little watchable because the woman is so damn lovable in anything she does. It also stars Paul Rudd, that smiley comedian we also always adore. As a look inside the lifestyle of college admissions offices the movie is actually pretty intriguing. As a breezy comedy about a woman who discovers she has a kid she never knew about, it's stale, thanks to its (HERE IT IS!) CONTRIVED script. We should know by now that likable actors can't always save a movie.
Admission (first of all, can this movie have a more boring title?) is about a workaholic Princeton University admissions officer named Portia (Fey). She's pretty lonely and is mostly interested in getting a promotion from her boss (Wallace Shawn). Her British boyfriend, Mark (Michael Sheen), is so boring he's always petting her head like a dog. Portia's social life consists of her visiting high schools and giving lectures on why Princeton is the best school for students. Her positive attitude is always brought down when she receives backlash from pessimistic (but realistic) high schoolers who argue that tons of kids that apply to the college don't get in, let alone put on its waiting list. They have a point, but as an admissions officer it's not a good idea to lecture how you most likely won't get accepted to the school you're promoting.
One day Portia gets a call from an old college classmate, John (Rudd), who asks her to come to the Quest School he teaches at. He's a bit more laid back than her and is even the legal guardian to a cute little black boy (Travaris Spears). Portia lectures there and the students are predictably rude. John takes her to dinner that night and spits out that he believes one of the students is her biological son. She denies it, but eventually believes it's possible because she got pregnant in college before giving it up for adoption. This student is Jeremiah Balakian (Nat Wolff), a nice but incredibly idiosyncratic guy who fails his classes but managed to get 5's on all of his AP exams. Portia decides to stay with her sour neighborhood mother (Lily Tomlin) in the hopes of getting to know her "son" before telling him the truth. Because she's an admissions officer, she persuades him to apply to Princeton as a way to make up for abandoning him in college. And, of course, she and John start to like one another. OF COURSE.
Director Paul Weitz has already made plenty of charmers like American Pie, About a Boy, and In Good Company. Admission has some funny moments, not just with Fey and Rudd but with an exceptional Tomlin as a mother who has no problem casually telling her daughter that she was a mistake. Yet, for the love of God, WHY MUST PORTIA AND JOHN START TO LIKE EACH OTHER? WHY?! It's not necessary. This is where the contrived aspect of Admission's script sets in. The plot points happen out of nowhere with no hint beforehand. They just occur because the script can't think of a better way to make them come about smoothly. Two big plot points, one involving Mark and one involving Jeremiah, happen that are eye-rolling because they occur so suddenly. If someone wrote this in my screenwriting class my professor would mark in huge red letters CONTRIVED CONTRIVED CONTRIVED!
Admission is a harmless little charmer with some occasional quirky moments that are more silly than witty. If only it had a better script that took out Portia and John's romance. After all, you don't always date anyone you meet.
