Dogs for adoption in Sussex: Could you give adorable Cocker Spaniel Mikey a loving home?

Mikey celebrated his birthday on October 12 and had a brilliant day celebrating with his carers at Dogs Trust Shoreham.

The birthday boy was treated to a group walk at the beach with his canine pals, plenty of fuss and cuddles from his favourite carers.

He was also spoilt with lots of treats and toys that were sent in as gifts from his sponsors.

Mikey, a cocker spaniel at Dogs Trust Shoreham, is looking for a new home.

But despite having the best day that he could while being thoroughly spoilt, Mikey is still waiting to receive the ultimate gift on the top of his list: a forever home.

Mikey dreams of finding a calm household with a consistent routine that he can settle into.

He would also appreciate a garden of his own to zoom about in, and an area of the house that is reserved just for him so that he can enjoy his mealtimes in peace and quiet.

Despite being in his senior years, the nine-year-old still has plenty of energy. He particularly enjoys chasing around after his toys and playing a game of ‘swapsies’ with a tennis ball.

Having made great progress learning new skills, the super-smart chap is keen to find adopters who have just as much enthusiasm as he does when it comes to reward-based training.

An adult-only family who have experience with dogs, and who can dedicate much of their time to Mikey, would be a ‘pawfect’ match.

While he will need to be the only pet at home, Mikey enjoys catching up with other likeminded dogs when going out for his walks and would benefit from regular, social outings.

Our 2020 Holiday Gift Guide

After missing last year’s gift guide (blaming it on being new parents!), we’re back with our 2020 holiday gift guide!

We had a lot of fun compiling this small gift guide, and combined all of the gift categories this year, instead of separating them into guides for him, her, etc. Hope you’re able to find something for your loved one this year, and happy holidays!!

The Pawfect Piece for National Puppy Day - Major is a Very Good Boy

Major is a Very Good Boy - by Aron Solomon There are two kinds of people who have German Shepherds: Those who should have them and those who shouldn’t. No matter your political affiliation, if you are a dog lover, you would agree that the President and First Lady are truly fine German Shepherd parents with the right experience and temperament to deal with what can be a marvellously complex breed. Yet this complexity finds one current presidential dog, rescue German Shepherd Major, hopefully soon to emerge from the doghouse. Major Biden is currently studying back home in Delaware, working with a highly-skilled trainer following an alleged (this has never been proven in a canine court of law) biting incident. There are far worse places in the world to be sent away to for a few weeks than Delaware. It’s a beautiful state with lovely beaches, the most Ph. Ds in the nation per capita (hat tip to Dr. Jill Biden), and hopefully, at least one superb dog trainer. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki broke the Major news to the nation and the world earlier this month: “The First Family’s younger dog, Major, was surprised by an unfamiliar person and reacted in a way that resulted in a minor injury to the individual that was handled by the White House medical unit with no further treatment required.” This week, in an ABC interview with George Stephanopolous, President Biden clarified that Major did not break the skin in his bite - that the dog reacted to an unfamiliar situation and person that he saw as presenting a danger. The thing with rescue dogs is that no matter how long you have them, no matter what an amazing dog family you are, there is always hidden baggage to unpack. Just when you think enough time has passed, when you understand the dog, and the dog understands you and their environment, you uncover a new layer, as the Bidens have. It’s kind of poetic in a political sense when you think about it. No matter how hard we seek to understand politics, how people will behave in any given circumstance, there are endless surprises and unseen turns in the road. This is also true with the German Shepherd, a dog that has existed as an official breed for over a century. This image is from a closed change.org UK petition to split the one breed into two traditional and continental breeds. The same petition lays out the main problem with the breed: “It is a simple matter of fact that from about 1925 to the 1970s, the dogs had pretty much the same outline and build. This is demonstrated by examining photographs of the ‘top’ dogs (Siegers) in Germany each year. However, in the 1970s, there was a change of appearance of the dog largely due to the influence of a cabal of breeders who dominated the SV (Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde - Society for the German Shepherd Dog).” This change in appearance and behaviours sought by breeders is the strongest in the United States. Here, the breed has been perhaps irrevocably damaged by disreputable breeders and people who don’t have a clue about what it’s like to own a remarkably intelligent, energetic breed of dog, where the males can weigh a muscular 100 pounds. This is absolutely not a beginner’s dog, yet far too many beginners have one. The result is far too many German Shepherds ending up in shelters or rescues. Dog rescue organizations do such amazing work every day in the United States. Set in a landscape where close to 7 million pets end up in shelters each year, breed-specific rescue organizations have sprung up all across the country, especially in the past decade. These rescue organizations survive through donations and work hard to care for the dogs while ensuring an intelligent and humane placement into permanent homes, often through multiple stays with foster families. Pittsburgh lawyer, Mark A. Smith, is a passionate advocate for dog rescue and devotes his time and energy to the cause. His observation of dog rescue's critical importance is shared not only by the First Family but by anyone who understands the golden thread linking dogs and people. “It is important to rescue dogs to restore a dog’s faith in humanity. Rescuing a dog is the selfless act of humanity that is repaid by a life of unconditional love and loyalty.” Part of loving a dog is understanding them as individuals and as a breed. Most people just don’t know that the same breed can be very different in different parts of the world. I returned to North America in 2020 after living for four years in Berlin. In Germany, the German Shepherds are far different than they are here. In Germany and throughout most of Europe, breeders have been much more careful in (pun intended) shepherding the breed even with the unfortunate breeding variations of the 1970s. They have been far more careful not to breed for the characteristics that far too many breeders in the United States have done. In Germany, the posture and stance of the German Shepherd are less distanced from that of their ancestors of a century ago. Dr. Anja Peters, a very well-known veterinarian in Berlin, sees a lot of German Shepherds in her practice. In her experience, they are almost always wonderful dogs. “Throughout my career as a veterinarian, I have been impressed with how intelligent, and kind German Shepherd Dogs are. They are very fast to learn and are always very sensitive to the emotions around them. They are not aggressive but are quite perceptive and sensitive.” In the United States, German Shepherds are the second most registered breed in the nation, which is exactly where problems with this breed begin. This was never intended to be a generic dog for the inexperienced ever Dr. Peters adds: “I grew up in the GDR (East Germany). Everyone had a German Shepherd because we love them and were experienced in raising them. But it was very different in the West (Germany), where they started to breed in ways that caused the hip dysplasia.” As to the reality of German Shepherds being aggressive dogs even with this change in breeding, trusty Wikipedia refutes this: “An Australian report from 1999 provides statistics showing that German Shepherds are the breed third most likely to attack a person in some Australian locales, once their popularity is taken into account, the percentages of GSD attacks drop to 38th.” The Bidens are not beginners. They’re experienced German Shepherd parents and are getting Major the guidance he needs to do the service work the nation needs him to do. That’s really not an exaggeration. Many Americans love having dogs in the White House. It reminds them of better days, of simpler and arguably more wholesome times. And, especially for those who appreciate the breed, Major and his brother, Champ, are beautiful dogs, examples of how different German Shepherds can look, but both wonderful and important members of the Biden White House. In the Stephanopoulos interview, President Biden claimed that “85% of people in the White House love Major.” Huh? What about the other 15%. Well, with an 85% approval rating, Truman (87%), Bush the Elder (89%) and Bush the Younger (90%) are in Major’s sites for having the highest approval rating in White House history. And as every dog lover knows, every ounce of attention and energy we give to our dogs is repaid a thousandfold. When Major returns from Delaware, many Americans will be watching with more than passing interest and the eyes of a dog-loving nation will realize that Major is indeed a very good boy. Flower Crown

Day 13 is done! I hope you enjoy this lil oneshot! I’ll be back tomorrow with the next one haha! And I sooo headcanon that Adrien can braid lololol. Boy has got to learn something from the hair and makeup stylists he’s got lmaoo. Lemme know what you though :D!

Marinette giggled as she began arranging the flowers she had previously gathered into a crown. It was late and she had allowed Chat to steal her away from her homework to some small, empty park. They were huddled underneath a tree, hoping to stay away from any revealing eyes. After a few moments, Chat tugged her rubber bands away, ignoring her indignant squawk and released her hair from its customary pigtails. The superhero’s hands then effortlessly dove into her hair, braiding it and skillfully placing it into a neat updo.

“When did you learn how to braid?” she asked after a little while, her eyes slowly fluttering closed at the nice head massage he was giving her.

Chat gave a small tsk, his concentration obviously on the braid he was focusing on. When he tucked another piece of her hair into the braid, he hummed and answered her question, “Mmm, you’d be surprised what a bored teenager with nothing to do learns.”

Chuckling, Marinette turned her head to look at him, even as he frowned at her and moved her head back forward so he could focus on the braid. Rolling her eyes, she reached back for the flower crown she had previously been working on. Tucking another flower into the headdress she was making, she teased him, “So you’re a man of many talents then?”

“You could say that,” Chat answered her, a clear smirk in his voice.

With another quiet laugh, she reached back to swat at him only to miss, “I was making fun of you, kitty!”

“And here I am braiding your hair,” he sighed, “You’re so mean to me, purrincess.”

Rolling her eyes again, Marinette ignored him and turned back to the crown she was working on. They continued in silent tandem for a while, the designer focused on her work while the superhero braided her hair. Chat managed to finish before her, instead using his fingers to run lightly through her hair. He leaned closer to her, murmuring quietly, “Your hair’s beautiful down, you know.”

She shivered slightly but chalked it up to the cold surrounding them, rather than the warm breath on the back of her neck. Marinette’s lips quirked as she slid the last flower into her crown, turning around to look at him. He was a lot closer then she expected, and she blinked at the emerald green eyes in front of her. Clearing her throat some, she placed the crown on his head with a grin, “Perfect!”

Chat smirked down at her, “You made this crown just for me? Aw, I think you mean it’s absolutely pawfect, purrinces!”

“No, no, I definitely meant perfect,” she smiled.

In a few seconds, Marinette was swept up into his arms and she squeaked in surprise as he did so, “Come on, Mari. I think it’s time to get you home.”

“But I still have homework to do,” she groaned, burying her head in his chest.

“Which is exactly why we need to get you home,” Chat chuckled before brushing a kiss against her head. They arrived at her house in record time, Marinette barely even feeling the wind as he rushed them back. When he placed her back onto solid ground, he winked at her, “Thanks for the flower crown, by the way.”

“You’re welcome! I’m glad you like it! And thank you for the braid,” she beamed back at him, before she realized something, “Do you think if I sleep in it, I’ll still be able to wear it for tomorrow!?”

“Yeah, it should be fine,” Chat grinned back, “I can’t wait to see what it looks like tomorrow.”

Shocked by his statement as she was, Marinette barely had time to shout after him before he took off back to his home, “What do you mean by that?!”

Clucking her tongue at the superhero, she ducked back into the warmth of her room, hesitant to get started on the homework she had been procrastinating.

2 years later

“TAKE COVER!!” “INCOMING!” “AIR ATTACK!”

multiple screams were heard over the open field somewhere in Flanders surrounded by trenches where the American troops had set up camp. Most of the day was spent by making sure their gear was in the best condition and altered if needed, wounded cared for and newlings were trained. The day had passed without any incidents and then the worst happened.

Captain Steve Rogers and Sergeant James Barnes sat around a small fire munching on some bread, Bucky writing yet again another letter to his love y/n when they heard the screams followed by the sound of the sirens. An air attack could be seen coming in from the horizon, their time of rest was over. Both men were quickly on their feet gun ready if needed, they didn’t have cannons or other big guns at their disposal to defend themselves against air attacks. They needed to take shelter and wait this one out before they could try and reclaim more land from the Germans. Even though everyone here was a soldier and knows what to do in these kind of situations, panic erupted everywhere in the camp, not a soul wanted to be outside the shelter. But of course both Steve and Bucky waited to help others into the shelter.

“Bucky, you should go inside too. Those planes will be here soon, we don’t have much time left, go.” Steve yells to him from halfway across the field.

“No! I’m not leaving you alone out here, not with an incoming attack.” he screams back

“As your Captain I command you to go!”

“No! Not without you!”

But it was already too late, the first planes arrived over the top of the field.

Finally after all this time y/n had finished nursing school and was sent off to help care for wounded soldiers at the frontlines in Europe. She wasn’t going alone, she had quickly made some new friends during her studies, Lacy, Wanda and Natasha that had also been recruited for the job.

“who knows maybe we’ll meet some hot soldiers when we arrive.” Natasha giggles as she nudges y/n who was staring out of the train window looking at the passing scenery deeply sunken down into her thoughts.

“ugh? what?” she asks surprised when she felt the nudge.

“Where are you with your thoughts? are you thinking about a man?” Wanda teases.

Oh, if they only knew that she was in fact thinking about a man, her man, even if he technically wasn’t her man anymore she never stopped thinking about Bucky hoping that he would write her like he said he would. But his letter never came so she figured that he had moved on. Had he found someone else, was he happy or did he miss her as much as she missed him? she would never stop loving him, how could she? he was her first real love, everything could have ended differently if she hadn’t been made move, they could have still been together maybe even married. However, she couldn’t keep wallowing in the past, she had to keep going and leave the past in the past, she had to move on.

“oh no, just wondering about how everything will be at the camp when we arrive.” y/n quickly makes up.

“well I said that maybe we’ll meet some hot soldiers.” Natasha repeats herself just as the train arrives at the station. the girls keep giggling and talking between them as they get up with their stuff and make their way through the train towards the exit. y/n already being in a better mood was now enthusiastically talking along with her friends as they exit the train with all their luggage stepping onto the busy platform not really looking where she was going when she heard Lacy calling out to her. “y/n! look out” but it was too late, she collided with a hard body dropping everything she was holding onto the station grounds.

“oh god, I’m so sorry I wasn’t looking where I was going.” she started to apologise as she bends down to pick up her things.

“it’s okay ma’am I wasn’t really looking where I was going either.” the man spoke up in a friendly and warm voice as he dropped to his knees and helped her gather her stuff. When she looks up at him she finds two brown eyes looking back at her, he was a handsome man and for a moment she didn’t know what to say to him so she quickly mutthered a simple “hello”

the man chuckled but gave her a wide smile as he helped her back to her feet and handed her her stuff that had fallen.

“Hello, I’m Tony Stark. it’s a pleasure meeting you ma’am.” He introduced himself.

“y/n y/ln.”

The moment Bucky saw the planes he knew it would be impossible for them both to reach the shelter in time. He had to decide if he would try to run to the shelter and hope he would make it in time or run to Steve and at least try to get them both to safety. Knowing that their chances were slim to none on making it back alive. But he couldn’t leave his best friend behind not after everything they had been through so he started to ran towards Steve. Everything happend quickly and before he knew the first bombs started to fall exploding around them, the shockwaves pushing him to fall to the ground with a smack, he knew he didn’t have much time till another wave of bombs would fall. so as fast as he could he got up to his feet and started to run in the direction of where he had last seen Steve but he wasn’t there anymore. He heard faint groaning coming from the trenches just a few feet from where he stood, he quickly followed the sound and made his way down in the trench.

“STEVE!” he called out to only get the groaning in return. Steve was laying on the ground covered in dirt. Bucky quickly made his way to his best friend and kneeled down next to him ready to help him to his feet and back to safety when his eyes fell to his face. blood, steve wasn’t covered in dirt but in blood, it seemed that one of the bombs exploded closer to him than he thought it had. Bucky quickly found where the blood had come from, there was a big gash just above his right eye that seemed to go till his ear and was the reason his face was covered but then his eyes fell to his upper leg and Bucky almost lost what little he had inside his stomach. It was too gross for words and there and then he realised he was too late, there was no way Steve could survive the bloodloss. Bucky refused to give up on him so without thinking he pushed his hands onto the bleeding wound on top of his thigh, if he was able to keep his friend alive long enough for help to arrive maybe there was a chance he would survive this. but just as he wanted to put pressure onto the wound he felt a biting pain in his left shoulder.

“Buck, you’re hurt.” Steve softly muttered out as he tried to lift his hand towards the bleeding wound on Bucky’s left shoulder.

Bucky just cursed as he grabbed Steve’s hand trying to calm his probably dying friend.

“it’s okay Steve, I’m okay, we’ll be okay, help is on the way. just hold on punk.”

“No... it’s not... Buck...I won’t make it...tell Ruth I love her.” he stutters

“you tell her yourself damnit.” Bucky growls knowing well enough Steve was right and he should tell his friend that he would do as he asked but before he could open his mouth a new wave of planes arrived above them, it was too late.

Don’t get us wrong, we love kittens (they’re so teeny and cute!), but we have just as much love for their more mature counterparts as well.

Older cats often get overlooked in our adoption centres, and it boggles our mind as to why because they’re such amazing companions, and in a lot cases, a more pawfect match for your family than kittens.

Don’t believe us? Check out these 15 reasons why adopting an older cat is the best!

1. Toilet matters

99% of the time an older cat will be litter trained (actually, cats are known for being clean, it’s probably more like 99.999999% of the time!), so you won’t have to worry about training them yourself or cleaning up after their ‘accidents’.

2. They know who they are

An older cat’s personality is fully developed, they know what they want and who they want. So basically, they’re the perfect date! But in all seriousness, if you want an affectionate cat, we can point you in the right direction. Want a playful cat, or someone who’s more mellow? We can show you them too! With kittens, you can never be too sure as their personalities are still developing.

3. Keep your furrrniture fantastic

An older cat is more likely to know the difference between a scratching post and your couch. Always a plus!

4. That's ok... I didn't need to charge my phone anyway... ever again

If you’ve got a toddler you already know that in the mouth go ALL OF THE THINGS!! This is also true of kittens. They will chew anything they can get their little paws on - shoes, shoe-laces, letters and bills (well... they can keep those!), hair ribbons, power cords (we were serious about your iPhone charger), books - the list is endless! An adult cat is far less likely to try and pull apart everything in their path.

5. Manners are a must

An older cat is more likely to know basic household etiquette, so they’re less likely to spend their time sitting on the dinner table trying to steal your food, running a muck with the toilet paper in the bathroom, and pushing fragile ornaments off the shelf just because it seemed like a fun thing to do.

6. Our A+ students

While it is unlikely that you will be able to train your cat to roll over or stand on command (but if you have mastered these, please send us the video!), it is easier to teach an older cat basic skills such as coming when they’re called and staying away from places they’re not allowed to be.

7. No surprises

When you adopt an older cat, chances are that if there are any ongoing medical issues, you will know about them up front and can plan for any additional expenses accordingly. With a kitten, you’re unlikely to know if they need ongoing medical attention until after you bring them home.

8. Best friends furrever!

It’s tempting to buy a kitten for your little human. Little human + little kitten = a perfect match, right? Wrong! Kittens have much sharper teeth and claws than adults and show a lot less restraint as well, meaning, it could all end in tears for your little human. An adult cat will generally have more patience and, if respect is shown for them too, can grow a beautiful friendship with your little human.

9. When the honeymoon period wears off

Kittens are incredibly fun and no day with them is ever the same, but once you’ve fixed the lamp they broke, replaced the vase on the shelf, been woken up at 3am while they sing the song of their people, and your legs have been attacked more times than you care to remember when simply walking through the house, you will find yourself longing for the day when they would just calm the furr down! Cue adult cat: twice the love, half the destruction.

It’s true, you will get more love from a more mature cat. They’re spending less time climbing curtains, so have more time for snuggles!

11. They're still a bundle of fun

While their destructive kitten days are long gone, older cats are still hella fun!
