The most trafficked mammal on our planet
Pangolins consume up to 20,000 insects a day and are covered in hard scales made of keratin (just like our fingernails), which is unusual for a mammal. Most pangolin species are now being driven towards extinction primarily because of the demand for their scales, even though there is no scientific evidence showing their healing properties or special medicinal function. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals on our planet; Chinese pangolins (M. pentadactyla) are extremely rare in Hong Kong, which is why this photograph is a precious souvenir of an encounter with such a vulnerable creature.

A Chinese pangolin born at Prague Zoo, the second in less than two years, is defying the odds and doing well, officials at the park in the Czech Republic said. The female of the critically endangered mammal was born on July 1, the second Chinese pangolin born in captivity in Europe following her sister, Cone, in February last year. She weighed just 4.97oz (141g) but is putting on about 0.3oz (10g) a day and could reach 8.8oz (250g) this week, the zoo said. Adults can reach up to 15lb (6.8kg).

Pangolins are the most trafficked animal in the world, according to the outlet, which noted 23.5 tonnes (nearly 26 tons) of pangolins and their body parts were bought and sold in 2021 and that one million pangolins have been poached in the last 10 years. The giant ground pangolin is endangered.
The giant ground pangolin reemerged in Kenya in 2018, the first time the scaly creature had been spotted in 47 years.
Asian pangolins:
Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) – Critically Endangered
Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) – Critically Endangered
Palawan pangolin (Manis culionensis) – Critically Endangered
Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) – Endangered
African pangolins:
White-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tricuspis) – Endangered
Giant pangolin (Smutsia gigantea) – Endangered
Ground pangolin (Smutsia temminckii) – Vulnerable
Black-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla) Vulnerable

for noooooo reason at all; if you wanted to make a hollow knight-esque moth king character, what would be your top picks of moths to base the character on and why?
I haven't played hollow knight yet, so I did some research. The moth characters' colour scheme is mostly neutral with some pops of colour. There's a lot of emphasis on shape, so my first thought was a plume moth, maybe Pterophorus pentadactyla?

But why stop at a plume moth? What about a many-plumed moth? Like Alucita phricodes?

I also think some sort of metalmark moth would be cool: a lot of metalmark moths are jumping spider mimics and have fake eyes at the ends of their wings. These marks aren't recognizable as eyes irl, but could be exaggerated in the character design.
Also: they have evil eyes!! just look at this devious fella

Gracillariidae moths are also very shapey, specifically when their wings are spread out. This unID'd one reminds me of hollow knight a lot, especially the way its legs are held under it.

The Golden Clearwing is especially beautiful, and also very eldritch looking which I think suits the purposes of hollow knight.

The Chinese Pangolin (or Manis pentadactyla, named after the five claws on their front feet) originates from Asia (India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Southern Chine, Hainan, and Taiwan).
They are classed as Critically Endangered due to being hunted for illegal trafficking. It is highly desired species in traditional medicine and hunted primarily for their scales despite zero evidence that it is actually medicinally beneficial. Despite preventive measures such as laws, education, rescue, and rehabilitation, as well as ranger training, until the demand for their use traditional medicine decreases, the population will continue to go down in numbers, perhaps even to the point of extinction in the wild.
Chinese Pangolins are nocturnal in nature, sleeping in burrows during the day and hunting for ants, termites, and other insects by night with their 40cm long tongues.
Even though the pangolins are promiscuous in their mating habits, they are difficult to reproduce in captive settings, adding to the problems regarding population numbers.
Chinese Pangolins are odd creatures in several ways. First: they are the only mammal with scales (which sadly makes them the most trafficked animal in the world). Second: newborn pangolins will have soft scales during the first three days of their lives, only then their scales will harden.
Fun fact: pangolins don't have teeth. Instead they eat small stones that will sit in their stomach to grind down food.
