“It Shows Us What It Is That Is Worth Saving”: Aurora’s Five Songs for the Earth

Interview for Peppermint Magazine by Lauren Baxter (January 10th, 2023)

“Our world and our environment have always been a heart matter for me.” So says Aurora Aksnes, the enigmatic and beguiling Norweigan alt-pop artist known mononymously as Aurora. “I’ve always believed that communicating her beauty and her importance through art, music and film is what touches us the most. It shows us what it is that is worth saving.”

Returning to Australia this March for the open-air festival WOMADelaide, alongside a slew of east coast dates, Aurora crafts music that covers themes ranging from global capitalism and the environmental crisis to love, shame, desire and morality. It’s something that rings true through the artist’s entire discography – her voice, while often described as otherworldly, is of and for Earth. “I feel like I’ve always been the opposite of apathy my whole life,” Aurora shares of this affinity for the natural world. “I’m just extremely emotional and extremely thin-skinned, I guess. The world wants to raise you to have thick skin – it’s built around caring about yourself, and maybe your family and friends, but it stops there. We forget how connected we all are and all should be. It should be more natural for us to feel each other’s pain.

“That connects me with naturally feeling on behalf of the things you see in the world, especially things and situations that don’t necessarily have their own voice. We have to work for Earth. It does talk to us, but not in the language people seem to understand.”

For Aurora, translating that language is not something she takes on as a responsibility to share through her music. “I want to do it because it makes sense,” she says emphatically. “It makes sense to care. It makes sense to talk about it when the planet is dying right in front of us and people who live in the areas that get the most affected are dying already. Forests are disappearing and animal breeds that have existed for millions of years, we have destroyed. It’s just such a mockery of nature and the world. It’s terrible. I guess it is a responsibility, but I do it not because I feel like I have to. I think it just makes sense to talk about it because it’s such a vibrant problem. It feels like it’s burning around us.”

These worlds of music and activism have long been intertwined – singing truth to power, melodies burrowing deep into our brains and lighting that spark for action. But can music save the world? “Art, music, movies – everything that touches people more emotionally than mind-wise – are very important because we mustn’t forget that this global conversation is an emotional topic,” says Aurora. “We treat it very much as a political one but it’s super emotional. We have to remember the emotional side of it which art can help provoke. But also, I never think that artists have more power because the art only has power because of the people.

“It’s the voices of all the people together that create true change. I hope everyone knows how important they are when they sit at home as well. Everyone is so important in this battle.” Here are Aurora’s five artists for the Earth.

BJORK

“A lot of Bjork’s music tickles a different part of my brain that I don’t often search to be tickled because her music is very out there and I like very instantly emotional music, like her earlier stuff. But also, some days, I feel I need this part of my brain tickled and Bjork can always help. I’ve just discovered her recently – I’ve always known her and I know that she’s an icon and that she’s paved the way for a lot of artists like myself, alternative people and to help people who are a bit on the spectrum to be understood more. I’m very grateful for her – I’ve met her a few times and she’s just lovely. A beautiful woman. I’m really learning to appreciate and truly understand her music.”

MAX RICHTER – RECOMPOSED

“Then there’s Max Richter’s Recomposed album. And also his album Sleep I love. He’s a beautiful man and he has this studio with his wife, far out in the countryside and they grow their own vegetables and all their power is from solar panels and they just live completely sustainably in this space and it’s beautiful.”

“Obviously Brian Eno, who I’ve met many times. He’s also my friend and his new album ForeverAndEverNoMore is an ode to Earth. We met through Earth Percent where you donate percentages of your songs and put Mother Earth as a co-writer.”

I even have shop small business saturday totes (the one w the dachshund!!!) bc american express gave a bunch to my mom's old place of employment one year to promote small business saturday and then they didn't give all of them away and th eowner of the store took some then gave my mom the rest and I love using it. I wish it was more of a square than a rectangle but I'm oddly particular about totes but I use one daily tis my default bag.

Hello apologies for the late response! And no you didn't ruin anything at all!! I have my guesses but nothing too substantial. Your tote bag sounds so good i love a good sturdy, cute tote bag! Based on my spotify wrapped, my other favorite/ most listened to artists are Olivia Rodrigo, Conan Gray, One Direction, and Shawn Mendes. Which is interesting bc some of these artists don't pop into my mind compared to Taylor. Keith Hardley

Age: 28 Occupation: NWR 1's fireman

He lives a monotone and uneventful day-to-day life. A great fan of Sodor’s Rumours Bulletin Board and checks it every time he finishes work. He likes reading rumours about family complaints and gossips about annoying coworkers, but he doesn’t really care about tales involving ghosts and supernatural entities because he doesn’t believe in them and think they’re outlandish. He doesn’t have any unique hobbies or skills in particular and he’s not the most active at socializing, but a lot of people like him (he is not aware of this) because of his honest and down to earth nature. He tends to be honest in his words and secretly wishes for something exciting to happen in his life, as long as it’s controllable by him.

Trivia:

"Hardley", not "Hartley". His last name is always subject to Thomas’ puns, much to his annoyance.

Doesn’t talk much and usually says yes to anything anyone says, but when one really gets to talk to him properly, they might say that his mind is full of deep thoughts.

During karaoke nights with Sidney and others, he just sits on the sofa and eats the snacks.

Sidney Harper

Age: 33 Occupation: NWR 2's fireman

A social butterfly. He gets excited easily and has a pleasant, friendly aura. He always tries to include introverts in his activities and rarely lefts out anyone at outings. He loves his wife and kids, his job, the engine he drives, the people around him, literally anyone.

Trivia:

He describes Edward as “a little funny – as in “tastes funny” kind of way – but he’s a wise and nice guy”. Sometimes the older man gives advices to Sidney.

He once suggested that NWR 2 should get a car air freshener as a joke.

Stephanie Blaise

Age: 25 Occupation: NWR 6’s firewoman

A cheerful and peppy woman who has a positive outlook in life. She always looks at the good side of things and believes that there’s always a way out for any problems. Though there are moments where she’s reasonable and level-headed, she sometimes has difficulty expressing her thoughts because she has a lot of things to think about. She’s also tech savvy, though she comments about losing interest in it at times.

Trivia:

She is deaf and uses hearing aid.

She thinks Percy is a kind person even though he can be snappy to others at times.

She doesn’t talk to Keith much, but she thinks he’s a smart man.

Likes: breakdancing, making websites, 90s fashion Dislikes: people who are impatient

Sculder

Age: 31 Occupation: NWR 9's fireman

An undercover member of the FBI who was sent to Sodor to investigate strange cases of people disappearing and appearing out of nowhere. Seems to enjoy this undercover job as a fireman way too much and believes in the existence of the supernatural, causing him to sidetrack from his missions. Luckily, our two main heroes are there to do their jobs.

Trivia:

Enjoys Mully’s company.

Does he remember that he’s part of the FBI and not an actual fireman?????

Likes: rooms with air conditioning, walking along train tracks Dislikes: peppermint

Mully 

Age: 29 Occupation: NWR 10’s firewoman

An undercover member of the FBI who was sent to Sodor to investigate strange cases of people disappearing and appearing out of nowhere. She believes in hard work more than praying for a miracle to happen, but nonetheless enjoys her life as a firewoman. Luckily, our two main heroes are there to do their jobs.

Trivia:

Despite her stoic nature, she enjoys Sculder’s company.

Can be unpredictable at times.

1. Punch Brothers - The Phosphorescent Blues. I like this album because of its progressive bluegrass style that kind of defines the rest of Punch Brothers' discography, as well, they absolutely take classical influences and this is very much obvious in every song on the album, I mean, they covered Debussy and Scriabin on this album and did a great job of it.

2. Bon Iver - Bon Iver. Don't @ me for this one. It feels like a cozy cup of peppermint tea, I never listened to a lot of Bon Iver before but this album is one that makes you feel like you're wrapped in a blanket when you listen to it.

3. The Innocence Mission - Birds of my Neighbourhood. The reason this is on here is because it reminds me a lot of this very specific midwinter time of year. I listen to The Lakes of Canada a lot when I feel particularly small and invisible.

dream job: teaching a college course on the psych of prejudice while also conducting research on the factors contributing to anti-teans prejudice, attempting to bridge the concepts of queer theory and psychology (which was also my minor and my major) (i could go on abt this for a while)

dream trip: i got the chance to visit spain in high school and i want to go back and see the basilica in barcelona that was under construction then. it should be finished by the time im 26 so :) hopefully i'll be able to afford it

instrument: i played the trumpet for about 8 years, and then taught myself ukulele! but i wanna learn how to drum, play the guitar, maybe piano, and ive really veen working on my voice lately. maybe i'll post a video!

languages: english and a little bit o french........ i took it for 3 years in high school but all i know now is how to read french. cant speak/listen/write, but i can read

favorite songs: high to death by csh, haunted head by ezra furman, happy news for sadness by csh, father flesh in rags by csh........ actually probably car seats entire discography at this point.

random fact: uhhhhhhh my college cat is leashed trained, my home cat isnt, and theyre both wonderful to take on walks :)
