Veronica’s Veil
Tumblr media
At the Shrine of the Holy Face in Manoppello, Italy, visitors see a transparent cloth encased between two glass panes within an ornate silver frame above the sanctuary’s altar.
Once light is shined on the cloth of byssus fiber, the image of a bearded man, eyes open, and mouth seemingly taking a breath is revealed.
Devotees of Manoppello veil claim that it is the so-called “Veronica’s Veil.”
It was secretly moved to the little hilltop town in Abruzzo on orders from Pope Clement VII to protect it following the Sack of Rome in 1527.
Another image of Christ’s face, known as “Veronica’s Veil,” is displayed at St. Peter’s Basilica on the 5th Sunday of Lent each year to bless pilgrims as they approach Holy Week.
Although traditional Stations of Cross include “Veronica wipes face of Jesus,” none of the Gospels recount a woman wiping Jesus’ face as he carries his cross to Calvary.
A pious legend says Veronica later went to Rome to leave the relic with St. Clement, one of early popes.
German journalist Paul Badde is convinced that veil displayed by Vatican for the past 400 years is a copy and that the true veil is in Manoppello.
“Every year on Passion Sunday, they show a hoax, I would say,” Badde told Catholic News Service January 14.
Capuchin friars at Manoppello have been custodians of a veil since 1630.
For centuries, few people outside small town knew of cloth and its image of Jesus. However, Capuchin priest, Father Domenico di Cese, made it his life’s work to spread devotion to Holy Face of Manoppello.
When he first saw veil as a young priest in 1930s, he knelt in shock. The face on the ancient linen looked like the same unidentified man who had rescued him from rubble of a church after a major earthquake in 1915 when he was a child.
Father Cese died in 1978 and it wasn’t until 1999 that veil really caught world’s attention.
That was when Jesuit Father Heinrich Pfeiffer, an art historian at Rome’s Pontifical Gregorian University, announced at press conference that cloth was true “Veil of Veronica.”
He stated that after conducting research, he discovered that the image on the veil could be perfectly superimposed on face of the Shroud of Turin, the relic many believe is Jesus’ burial shroud.
Some devotees maintain that the image’s connection to “Veronica” is not related to a woman who tried to soothe Jesus but is actually form of phrase “vera icona” (true icon).
Capuchin Father Paolo Palombarini, parochial vicar of the shrine, said:
“Both pupils are open. But one can see that the right pupil is more closed than one on the left because this is first instance of the Resurrection and it happened just at it does when we wake up in the morning.”
Vatican does not formally recognize authenticity of relics like Veil of Manoppello or Shroud of Turin.
However, public veneration of such relics by popes often draw attention of faithful.
Such was the case when Pope Benedict XVI became first pope to visit Manoppello shrine in 2006 and venerate the image, Badde said.
He told CNS that Pope Benedict had read his book on the veil and “decided to go there against enormous resistance in Vatican.”
Still, during what Pope Benedict himself described as a “private pilgrimage,” he made no pronouncement about the image.
Addressing priests, religious and pilgrims who packed the shrine, he said those who seek the true face of Christ can find it in their brothers and sisters, “especially poorest and those most in need.”
“If we persevere in our quest for the face of the Lord,” Pope Benedict said, “at the end of our earthly pilgrimage, he, Jesus, will be our eternal joy, our reward and glory forever.”
Badde said, “He was the first pope after more than 400 years to get on his knees in front of this image, that’s what he did. That’s what will remain of his pontificate.”
Pope Benedict’s visit increased attention to the image, which continues to draw more pilgrims each year.

Attended church for my nephew's First Communion today. The priest is youngish, has the sort of British accent that doesn't pronounce R's*. His tone is light, he tells jokes during the homily, he's trying hard to be friendly and hip and relatable and make Catholicism something Cool™️**.
And then. AND THEN. During the eucharistic uhh ceremony? (is that the term?) he does something I've decided to call the JESUS VOICE. There's a variety of eucharistic prayers (at least four? Maybe more) but all of them have a bit about Jesus taking the bread, giving thanks, giving it to his disciples saying 'Take this all of you etc etc'. And this priest, when he gets to the bit directly quoting Jesus, drops his voice at least an octave and BOOMS out the words. Slowly. Solemnly. JESUS VOICE.

Song Review: Old & in the Gray - “Midnight Moonlight” (Live, July 21, 2001)
By the time 2001 rolled around, an Old & in the Way reunion was impossible. So guitarist Peter Rowan, mandolinist David Grisman and fiddler Vassar Clements recruited Herb Pederson (banjo) and Mike Bub (bass) to step in for Jerry Garcia and John Kahn, respectively, and got to work as Old & in the Gray.
Someone captured the reconstituted band performing “Midnight Moonlight” at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival that year. And limitations of the video notwithstanding, the just-surfaced bootlegged footage confirms this was not a wasted effort.
Older and grayer to be sure, the three principals are clearly happy to be back together. There’s a joy in Rowan’s lead vocals and the harmonies shared by all, save Clements, who is all about the playing.
After two verses, everyone - including Bub - solos. And though Rowan bookended the lengthy round-robin, instrumental passage with jazzy runs on his acoustic guitar, Clements was the busiest musician on stage, taking a minutes-long turn in the proverbial spotlight (it was a daytime gig) and sawing for nearly the entire quarter-hour runtime.
Rowan takes the final verse, the band harmonizes on the chorus and the fastest 15 minutes spent on YouTube is over almost as quickly as it began. Until the listener begins it again.
Grade card: Old & in the Gray - “Midnight Moonlight” (Live - 7/21/01) - A+

After a Republican National Committee member conducted a Sikh prayer during the first day of the 2024 Republican National Convention, right-wing influencers attacked the “shameful” and “pagan” prayer, claiming it “betrayed the true God,” was “not emblematic of America,” and was actually “decorated word salad for ‘Hail Satan’” and “anti-Christian evil.”

Do nidia actually stop aging physically past a certain point and look like children forever, or do they keep aging like other people but just stay really small? The wiki says it's the former, but I don't know if that actually came from anywhere. Like, we have Jin:
Tumblr media
Does he still look like an old man when unglamored, just small?? Or does he have to update his glamor every so often to suit what his age "should" look like to others?

World Religion Day
World Religion Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in January every year, and is a reminder of the need for harmony and understanding between religions and faith systems. On this day, communities of different faiths have the opportunity to get together and listen to each other, as well as celebrate the differences and commonalities that the delicate intermingling of culture and religion brings. There are approximately 4,200 religions around the world. While many people live their lives without religion, faith in a higher being or power works for the majority of people. Whatever the reasons, we are all for the idea of people being unified despite differences, and celebrating them.
History of World Religion Day
The first official observance of World Religion Day (as it is known today), was in 1950, but the concept began a few years prior to that. In Portland, Maine, the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’í Faith hosted a talk in Eastland Park Hotel in October 1947, culminating in the decision to observe an annual event, then known as World Peace Through World Religion. By 1949, the event began to be observed in other parts of the U.S. and grew more popular. By 1950, it came to be known as World Religion Day. On this day, at various different locations, many authors, educators, and philosophers are invited to speak on world religions and the importance of establishing and maintaining harmony between them. It’s a great forum for learning more about other religions and cultures too, and a chance to intermingle socially with people of different faiths and worldviews.
Since this concept was the brainchild of people from the Bahá’í Faith, it is worth exploring what this faith is and tracing its historical roots. As a religion, Bahá’í first emerged in Persia (modern-day Iran), in the 1800s. There are three core principles of this faith — unity of God, unity of religion, and unity of all mankind. It is a monotheistic faith, believing in a single god, and that the spiritual aspects of all religions in this world stem from this single god. Another central tenet is the belief in the innate equality of all human beings. Thus, all humans have the same rights and responsibilities. If you look at it, the Bahá’í Faith is an all-encompassing one that recognizes the commonalities between all religions, so Baháʼí believes that all faiths have common spiritual goals too, especially since religions are ever-evolving.
World Religion Day  timeline
1800s The Baha`i Faith is Established
In Persia, around 1844, the Bahá'í Faith is established by a mix of people from Christian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian religious roots.
1949 World Peace Through World Religion
The first event takes place in Portland, Maine, to establish the foundation of World Religion Day.
1950 World Religion Day is First Observed
As World Peace Through World Religion begins to spread across the U.S., the celebration morphs into World Religion Day.
1957 Bahá'í Leadership Passes on to a Group
Rather than passing on from individual to individual, the death of Shoghi Effendi leads to the faith leadership passing to the Universal House of Justice.
World Religion Day FAQs
How many religions are there in the world?
Many scholars estimate that there are approximately 4,200 different active religions in the world today.
How many countries celebrate World Religion Day?
World Religion Day is currently celebrated in over 80 countries around the globe.
Which religion has the most adherents?
Christianity tops the list, with a whopping 2,3 billion. Next comes Islam with 1,8 billion. Third on the list are those unaffiliated with any particular religion, at 1,2 billion.
How to Observe World Religion Day
Attend an interfaith event
Engage with other religions
Try out a different religious experience
Many different organizations hold interfaith events on this day, where people can get together and hear about the beliefs and philosophies held by others of different faiths. These events are great spaces for eminent speakers, writers, and spiritual leaders to share openly about what they subscribe to, and why.
World Religion Day provides the perfect opportunity for people to step out of their individual bubbles and engage with the beliefs and spiritual ideologies of others. It’s about dialogue and the freedom to both express and listen; most importantly, it’s a time to learn from each other. This day reminds us that religion does not have to be a taboo subject, and everyone has a unique story to tell.
Religion is often inextricably linked with culture, so why not experience the best of both by attending a religious event of some sort, outside of your own? Whether it is going to a mosque or temple, or celebrating a religious festival you are not familiar with, it’s a great way to make inroads into different community groups and build relationships.
5 Facts About World Religions You May Not Know
You name it, there’s a patron saint for it
Wicca is not an ancient religion
Mormons have limited beverage options
The “Qur’an” mentions Jesus more than Muhammad
Hindus can also be atheists
In Catholicism, there is a patron saint for nearly everything, including coffee, beekeepers, and headaches.
Though it sounds like it would be ancient, considering its roots in European fertility cults, Wicca was introduced in the 1950s.
Mormons are forbidden from drinking beverages like tea, coffee, or alcohol; soda, however, seems to be okay.
Though this is not a popularity contest, the “Qur’an” apparently mentions Jesus Christ five times more than Muhammad.
While Hinduism is a polytheistic religion, it is also possible to be a practicing Hindu and an atheist — the moral and ethical code remains the same.
Why World Religion Day is Important
It purports to unite people
Interfaith harmony
A chance to experience something different
We love any day that seeks to bring people together, irrespective of differences, and this day fits the bill exactly. Whatever one’s religious beliefs and culture, the longing for acceptance and unity will be a fundamentally human one that unites us already.
World Religion Day offers people across the globe a chance to get to know others of different religions better, and seeks to foster a better understanding of religious differences through peaceful means such as dialogue.
The various interfaith and religious events organized by communities around the world are an exciting opportunity and opening for people to immerse themselves in spiritual experiences different from what they know. And so much of it is cultural that we see it as a win-win.

We mentioned our love of New Zealand horror in our latest episode - so here are some of our favourites! (These all at least have comedy elements because kiwis can't make horror without turning it into a horror comedy.)

This is a psychological thriller about Ian, who wants to get as far away from humanity as possible, into the New Zealand bush. Some other individuals get attached to him. And he has the feeling that they are being followed. Is that real though? Housebound (2014) Dir. Gerard Johnstone A young woman is forced to return to her childhood home after being placed under house arrest, where she suspects that something evil may be lurking.
The Frighteners (1996) Dir. Peter Jackson After a tragic car accident that kills his wife, a man discovers he can communicate with the dead, and he uses that gift to con people. However, when a demonic spirit appears, he may be the only one who can stop it from killing the living and the dead.
Black Sheep (2006) Dir. Jonathan King An experiment in genetic engineering turns harmless sheep into bloodthirsty killers that terrorize a sprawling New Zealand farm.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014) Dir. Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are struggling with the mundane aspects of modern life, like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.
I've added these to a Letterboxd list also
