OC Questions!
I was tagged by @foxboyclit! Thanks for the tag Fox :> I'll give Venny a rest for a moment and do Lathlyria for this one!
5 words to physically describe your OC: looming, lean, ragged, wild-eyed, jovial
Who inspired your OC?: Lathlyria was originally my BG3 durge as well as a kind of a foil to Ven'axtha, so a lot of his characterization stems from that! For actual character influences... A big (and unintentional) one would be Toska from Prague Race, as well as Luck from Tiger Tiger.
Give me a song to define your OC: Hmmm this is tough... Maybe Tenebrous by Essenger!
If I met your OC on the street, how would they greet me?: He might smile at you in a way that would make you feel distinctly uneasy, but honestly otherwise would kind of just ignore you.
Can your OC be your best friend? Why?: Lath basically Only Likes Ven'axtha and is for the most part lukewarm feelings-wise to everyone else so. Probably not LMAO.
1 adjective and 1 noun to describe your OC: unsettling figure
And for tags... @wojtekbc and @holographicbutch!

what is apparent from a lot of comics disk horse is that aside from the characters a lot of people hold some degree of disdain for comics as a medium and practise for telling stories. they think it’s beneath them and refuse to engage on any level,
anyway i encourage everyone to read indie and autobio comics from artists who aren’t a part of the big two. read ariel slamet ries and petra nordlund and linnea sterte and emily carroll and marjane satrapi and maybe you’ll feel better

I really like your comic. Out of curiosity, what are your art inspirations?
that's a really good question with a slightly difficult answer because i tend to absorb bits and pieces of any media i like into my art style lol
(this got a little long, so answer under the cut)
if i go far back enough, i think my first real taste of comics as a medium was Cassandra Jean's graphic novel adaptations of Miss Peregrine
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(images copied from her announcement of the second book)
looking back on it now, the overall style is loose and sketchy, but still readable (which are not necessarily words i'd use for my own style lmao) but there's the use of value and solid black that i still strive for. the style is also very manga-esque, but i definitely picked up a few things on drawing faces and action from these books
(her more recent style is a lot cleaner and a lot more graphically complex, but there's still an emphasis on interesting, readable shapes)
there's also Peter Nevins, who did the original cover for the Hadestown concept album (and the cover for the NYTW recording? correct me if i'm wrong). he also did a few covers for Anaïs Mitchell's other works
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i actually drew a piece based on that second cover a few years ago)
he primarily works in linocut prints, which is a medium that kinda forces you to think in terms of value. while i mostly use the stuff he's done for Anaïs Mitchell as an example, i'm also fond of the original work on his shop
Tumblr media
over the years though, Drawfee has probably been the most consistent source of inspiration? it feels a little weird to call them that, especially considering the fact most people know them as a comedy show, but i've been using their speed draw videos as background noise for ages now
Tumblr media
i'm really fond of the atmosphere that they've created with their channel, and it's been so fun watching and growing in art skill alongside them (and sometimes having my vocab for the week be utterly destroyed by one of their bits)
there's definitely way more people i could name (CanisAlbus and asmeesh here on tumblr) and a huge pile of webcomic artists (Tracy Butler, Meg Syverud, Sarah Webb, Petra Nordlund—there's so many) but this post is already unreadable so i'll stop there lol
thank you for the ask, and thanks for reading Outsiders :D!!

the really funny part about this being primarily a manga blog is that like. I do in fact read comics Other Than Witch Hat I just became deeply obsessed with witch hat two years ago and haven’t returned to normal since.
ANYWAYS everyone should read Tiger tiger by Petra nordlund and on a sunbeam by Tillie Walden and Namesake by isameg and Nimona by Stevenson and vainglorious by kellysketches and Saint For Rent by Ru Xu and Strong Female Protagonist by Molly Knox Ostertag and Brennan Lee Mulligan.
ALSO. Sparrowhawk by Delilah s Dawson. incredible but it has faeries and I’m biased. Fence (CS Pacat and Joannathemad) is fun but the novelizations are not. The Prince and The Dressmaker (Jen Wang) is very sweet. Estranged (Ethan M Aldridge) is great, but again, faerie bias and I can’t resist changelings. I am CONSTANTLY recommending Taproot (Keezy Young) to people. It’s FUN it’s CUTE its got NECROMANCY. there’s Plants. More people should read it.

oh my god i came from your picrew and i need to immediately digest your art style and make my shit like yours. i made some of my ocs in it and they look GORGEOUS MY GOD. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR STYLE??? OR ACTUALLY WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS?? YOU'RE MINE NOW FOR SURE
Hehe :D I'm so glad you like it!!
I answered a question about my style once before. Here are some examples from a sample of the artists I listed! :)
Tumblr media
(John Austen - Illustration for Hamlet)
Tumblr media
(Kay Nielsen - Illustration for East of the Sun and West of the Moon)
Tumblr media
(P.J. Lynch - Illustration for East of the Sun and West of the Moon)
Tumblr media
(Sargent's The Lady With the Umbrella)
Tumblr media
(Carravaggio's Cardsharps)
As you can see, I really like long, curving lines.
I also HIGHLY recommend Petra Nordlund's Tiger, Tiger and Clover's Headless Bliss!!

hiya it's me again, the anon with ~questionable~ taste in fictional men i guess (is this really how i want to be known help)
thank you so much for the recs!! i've read/am reading some of those, but i've dutifully put the rest onto my read list—cannot wait to dive into some new stories o7 (also, i used to do a similar thing w/ranking stuff, except in a notebook LOL lost the notebook after i moved and my life has been in shambles ever since. but i digress.)
if you're up for offering some book recs as well i am most certainly 👀 !! i haven't lost myself in a good book in so long & i really miss it.
anywhoo, gonna cut myself off here before my rambling gets outta hand. sending you lotsa good vibes, cheers!
LMAO i'm sorry but that's your official title now. questionable taste in fictional men anon. hello <3
i hope you end of liking them!!! i am going to make ur to-read list a bit longer now hopefully. most of these are ya but to be fair ya fucks
gideon the ninth by tamsyn muir OBVIOUSLY
only a monster by vanessa len - i think the romance falls a little flat which does seem to be partially by design, but the premise/world/plot are all SO fun and fascinating and i love her draco malfoy-knock off friend
the scarlet alchemist by kylie lee baker - i have read a couple of wu zetian stories now and i think this is definitely one of the better adaptations. the pacing IS a little weird but i feel like the twists are interesting enough that i was fine with it LOL
the cruel prince by holly black - i love the cruel prince and that's all there is to say. ruthless protag done believably imo. fairies. romance with a questionable man
every heart a doorway by seanan mcguire if u haven't read it already
the beholder by anna bright - big fan of this one and its sequel bc it does not do what u expect it to do as a ya romance, in a very nice way
tiger, tiger by petra nordlund - bonus webcomic rec, volume one is published but also you can read online on her website for free. IT IS SO GOOD i read it all in like 3 days and now wait on the edge of my seat for new pages
