Remembering The Iron Sheik and Jack Lee
Here is my combined remembrance of two celebrities we lost today:
Remembering The Iron Sheik 1942-2023
Tumblr media
1985 Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff figures
Pro wrestler The Iron Sheik has died at 81. When I was a kid, I was into the WWF and this Iranian villain along with Nikolai Volkoff from Russia were the enemies to all-American Hulk Hogan. I had the Iron Sheik doll too. He had more than a few moments in pop culture: as a main character on the Sat. morning cartoon Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling; appearing in Cyndi Lauper’s “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” music video; and as part of the WWF music video “Land of 1000 Dances”. In 2010, I attended the Philadelphia Comic Con and I saw him and Volkoff at their booth. Didn’t talk to them, but it was cool seeing them in their costumes.

Remembering Jack Lee 1952-2023
Tumblr media
Lee and Debbie Harry on the telephone circa late 70s
Musician Jack Lee has died at 71. He was a founder of the 70s power pop band The Nerves. They were short-lived but their big claim to fame was their 1976 song “Hangin’ on the Telephone” that Lee wrote. A few years later it was covered by Blondie and became the opening track on Parallel Lines, their best album! The song was later covered by L7 and Def Leppard too.

Black Super Hero’s
Tumblr media
 AWSUM ISLOVE / SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2017
As you rave over Luke Cage, and soon Marvels’ Black Panther, Black SuperHeros have had a presence and history that out dates these two series. While this may the first time Black Superhero’s have been prominent on white owned media platforms, independent Black owned media platforms have been doing this for decades.
There are #AfrikanSuperHero movies, t.v series, & comics written, produced, directed & illustrated by actual Afrikans & the Afrikan Diaspora.
Black Comic book conventions such as E.B.A.C.C (www.ecbacc.com/wordpress4) (Yumy Odom, Founder and President)  of the largest Black Comic book convention on the East Coast was created in May 2002 in Philadelphia.  The Schomburg will be doing its 7th Annual Black Comic Book Festival in January 2018, co-produced by John Jennings. The producers of the festival are replicating it in California. In the Midwest for have MECCAcon ( https://meccacon.wordpress.com/) (founder, organizer, CEO, Maia Crown Williams)
OYA: RISE OF THE ORISHAS  is a short film originally released in July 31, 2016. Created by Nigerian-UK filmmaker, Nosa Igbinedion, it was nominated for the Efere Ozako Award for Best Short film. You can currently watch the new installment, YEMOJA:Rise of the Orishas, on demand via the website.

Tumblr media
This generation of Black-African Super Hero creators has done what #SidneyPoitier #HarryBelafonte, #RubyDee, #OssieDavis, The Black Arts Movement, & many more have done before them. Most millennials, born between 1980-1999, only know Ruby & Ossie as the old couple from Spike Lee’s, “Do the Right Thing” film. What you probably don’t know is that they owned/operated a production co. for audio recorded cassettes of music and ent. Emmalyn II Productions Co., Inc. and a business consulting service Dee-Davis Enterprises in 2010. Ossie was a film, television and Broadway actor, director, poet, playwright, author, and civil rights activist. Ruby was an actress, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and civil rights activist.
Tumblr media
Ivan Dixon, director of “The Spook Who Sat by the Door” in 1970, was an actor, director & producer from 1957 to 1991 . Brock Peters, producer of 1970 film “Five on the Black Hand Side” made his film debut in Carmen Jones in 1954, and sang background vocals on the 1956 hit "Day-O" by Harry Belafonte. He did voice overs in Batman: the animated series, and Darth Vador for the radio adaptation of the original Star Wars trilogy for National Public Radio (1981-1986).
White owned media saw the mass amounts of money that was being made by independent Black owned business & entrepreneurs that contribute to African diaspora characters. Not only was it making money, but it was taking money from their pockets as #BlackConsumers went to their own for empowering images of themselves. Prior to this, they cared nothing of us (and still don’t) only our money.
A living, elevated example of that transition, is Pamela Thomas. Culminating her collection as an adult, she looks back at her childhood. Disappointed with the  lack of empowering Black representation, if any,  in main stream comics, she looked elsewhere...and found it!  The Museum of Uncut Funk, (http://museumofuncutfunk.com/) is an online digital museum of BlackSuper Heros, She-rah’s, & paraphernalia that, “ celebrate[s] our contribution to history year round!” Everything from Fat Albert, The Jackson 5 cartoon, Mr. T comics, The Harlem Glob Trotters cartoon, and stuff I never knew existed. Her traveling exhibit, “ Funk Turns 40: Black Character Revolution” debuted at The Schomburg in 2014. That exhibition also eye-marked a new curation style for the Schomburg center; the walls were painted in bright solid colors dipping the viewer inside the luscious array of diversity and beauty, that is Black culture. It was this authors official introduction to Black Characters & the History of Black Characters. Since then, everything in regards to Black characters on t.v. and advertisements, failed in comparison. We have set a very high bar. That bar, is the norm for the independent Black image creators. Since then, everything in regards to Black characters on t.v. and advertisements, failed in comparison. We have set a very high bar. That bar is the norm for the independent Black image creators mentioned in this article.
“ Since then, everything in regards to Black characters... failed in comparison. We have set a very high bar. That bar, is the norm for the independent Black image creators...”
And again, my people have drunk the Koolaid of a white owned representation of something Black, thinking it will be "sweeter" & “cooler” than what we create for ourselves. This is a falsehood, (& an act of cultural treason) that must stop. Wanting Black content is not enough. We have to want ourselves.
* Pay Attn  to the Dates.* Your vision got drowned out by the white accredited version of a Black Superhero. (HHHmmmm) Their approval is not necessary for us to be fabulous, amazing, talented, disciplined, successful, & valued.
The best pple to represent our stories is US! And it is EXCELLENT!

Hyperallergic: Art Movements
(courtesy LaBeouf, Rönkkö & Turner)
Art Movements is a weekly collection of news, developments, and stirrings in the art world.
Over 30 artists and writers have signed an open letter calling for the removal and destruction of Dana Schutz’s 2016 painting, “Open Casket,” amid protests over its inclusion in the 2017 Whitney Biennial. The abstracted, impasto painting depicts the open casket of African-American teenager Emmett Till, who was savagely beaten, disfigured, and lynched in 1955. Written by artist Hannah Black, the letter accuses Schutz of “transmut[ing] Black suffering into profit and fun.” Several news outlets published a letter, allegedly written by Schutz, in which the artist called for the work’s removal. Stephen Soba, the Whitney Museum’s director of communications, confirmed to Hyperallergic that the letter is a hoax.
California-based artist Karen Fiorito received death threats after unveiling a billboard of Donald Trump emblazoned with dollar signs fashioned as Nazi swastikas.
A man was arrested after attacking Thomas Gainsborough’s “Mr. and Mrs. William Hallett” (1785) with a screwdriver at the National Gallery in London. Keith Gregory, a 63-year-old of no fixed address, left two long gashes on the painting. A preliminary report suggests that the damage can be repaired relatively easily.
Corrina Mehiel, an artist and teacher at the Corcoran School of Art & Design, was found bound and stabbed to death inside a rowhouse in Northeast Washington, DC. Police are currently searching for her missing car, a blue four-door 2004 Toyota Prius with a Kentucky license plate numbered 722RMY.
German police are seeking a man captured on CCTV in connection with the murder of Berlin-based artist Ewa Kowska.
Several Republican lawmakers, including Lisa Murkowski (AK), Susan Collins (ME), Shelley Moore Capito (WV), and Mark Amodei (NV), expressed their support for the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities.
Shia LaBeouf, Nastja Säde Rönkkö, and Luke Turner’s participatory work, “He Will Not Divide Us,” was “adopted” by the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) in Liverpool. The project will now take the form of a live-streamed flag emblazoned with the project’s title.
Piet Mondrian, “Victory Boogie Woogie” (1942–1944), oil, tape, paper, charcoal, and pencil on canvas, 127.5 x 127.5 cm (Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Loan Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands)
The Gemeentemuseum will display its entire collection of work by Piet Mondrian — about 300 pieces — as part of its upcoming exhibition, The Discovery of Mondrian.
UNESCO raised $75.5 million as part of a new fund to protect heritage sites from war and terrorism.
Annette Kulenkampff, Documenta’s CEO and managing director, requested additional funds for the quinquennial contemporary art exhibition. Half of the show’s $37-million budget is publicly subsidized, with the remainder raised by the exhibition’s organizers, a model that Kulenkampff described as “not sustainable in the long run.”
David Fitzpatrick, the president of American Federation of Government Employees Local 2058, stated that President Donald Trump’s federal hiring freeze was responsible for the shuttering of seven historic sites in Philadelphia, including Declaration House and Benjamin Franklin’s home and print shop.
Christie’s withdrew a painting by the late Iraqi artist Faeq Hassan from an upcoming auction in Dubai. Iraqi authorities claimed that the work belongs to the state and was smuggled out of the country.
Vincent van Gogh, “View of the Sea at Scheveningen” (1882) (courtesy Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam)
Two paintings stolen from the Van Gogh Museum in 2002 went back on display. Octave Durham, who along with an accomplice stole Vincent van Gogh’s “Sea View at Scheveningen” (1882) and “Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church at Nuenen” (1882–84), told a Dutch documentary crew that the theft took 3 minutes and 40 seconds. “When I was done, the police were there, and I was passing by with my getaway car,” Durham stated. “Took my ski mask off, window down, and I was looking at them. I could hear them on my police scanner. They didn’t know it was me.”
Artist Antonio Lee filed a fabricated report with the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s Edgar Database. The report, which Lee filed on February 1, stated that Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., had purchased Lee’s art company in a stock deal that made him richer than Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Jeff Bezos combined. According to Bloomberg’s Anders Melin, there is no evidence that Lee profited from the deception, though false filings continue to be an issue for the SEC.
A home movie shot by Lou Henry Hoover is thought to be the earliest known color film of the White House grounds. The footage was discovered by Lynn Smith, the audiovisual archivist at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum.

Revealed During PAX South 2017, New Tabletop Focused Event Debuts in Nov. 2017
Penny Arcade, to host one of the internet’s largest gaming communities, and ReedPOP, the world’s leading producer of pop culture events, announced PAX Unplugged, its first tabletop gaming focused event, in front of tens of thousands of attendees today at PAX South. PAX Unplugged, the sixth addition to the international line-up of PAX events, will debut at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, November 17 – 19, 2017.
PAX Unplugged will take all the elements that have drawn millions of gamers to PAX – the chance to play and see the reveal of highly-anticipated upcoming games, attend game-inspired music concerts, participate in tournaments and watch panels with industry leaders – but with a renewed focus on fostering the best event for the burgeoning tabletop gaming community.
PAX Unplugged will be a destination for attendees to share their common passions and socialize over board, card and other tabletop games, which have experienced a renaissance in recent years. Penny Arcade and ReedPOP are happy to embrace the thriving tabletop scene and provide those around it with a welcoming atmosphere to take this resurgence to even greater heights.

“With the rise of popularity of board games, we wanted to provide a dedicated space where fans can come together,” said Jerry Holkins, co-founder, Penny Arcade. “We will continue to have tabletop games at every PAX, but Unplugged will focus on stepping away from the TV, monitor and phone to foster face-to-face multiplayer experiences.”
Badges for PAX Unplugged will go on sale this Spring.
Working journalists as well as YouTube and Twitch content creators who are interested in attending PAX Unplugged to create coverage of the event and its exhibitors can register for a media pass in the Spring.
For more information, visit the PAX Unplugged site or follow PAX for updates via Twitter.
