Occasionally, the Manila galleons that traveled from the Philippines to Mexico and back didn't make it. Sometimes, this was due to foul play.
The capture of Nostra Seigniora de Cabadonga off Samar Island in the Philippines was a massive coup for the British. Not only did Anson take all of its goods — 32 wagons’ worth, which were paraded through the streets of London — but he got hold of important Spanish navigational charts that detailed the routes of the Manila galleon and other Spanish trade ships, allowing the British to harass Spanish shipping in their contest for imperial dominance. Anson’s feat was given a heroic treatment in English art, too. Here’s Samuel Scott’s 1772 painting of the incident:

'Deepest shipwreck': US WWII ship found off Philippines
Tumblr media
A US navy destroyer sunk during World War II has been found nearly 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) below sea level off the Philippines, making it the world's deepest shipwreck ever located, an American exploration team said.
The USS Samuel B Roberts went down during a battle off the central island of Samar on October 25, 1944 as US forces fought to liberate the Philippines—then a US colony—from Japanese occupation.
A crewed submersible filmed, photographed and surveyed the battered hull of the "Sammy B" during a series of dives over eight days this month, Texas-based undersea technology company Caladan Oceanic said. Read more.

U.S. Navy Bluejackets during the Battle of Zapote River.
On June 13, 1899, General Lawton's division moved south from Manila in order to capture the Filipino stronghold of Cavite. Reaching the Zapote river, they encountered Filipino entrenchements and engaged its defenders in a fierce fight.
To aid their assaults, American forces called on for support from the US Navy gunboats in Manila Bay, among them being the USS Helena and USS Monadnock. These two ships would provide naval gunfire, while also landing around 90 Bluejackets on shore, to support one of the attacks along the beach shore, as well as provide the army troops with additional supplies and ammunition.
----------------------------------------
Depicted in this piece is Fetch, as a US Navy lieutenant, dressed in the 1898 lieutenant's shore duty uniform, and Magpie, dressed in a seaman's shore duty uniform and manninng the M1895 Colt machine gun.
Both characters are owned by: @fetch26291
In the background the USS Monadnock can be seen firing its main guns.
