Offenbar will außer mir niemand weg von Google und trotzdem dauerhaft den eigenen Standort teilen

Beim Nachdenken über Demilliardärisierung merke ich, dass ich ohne Google Maps ja auch einen Ersatz für das ständige Standortteilen mit mehreren Menschen brauchen werde. Mit Aleks teile ich meinen Standort seit mindestens 2009, zuerst mit Hilfe von Google Latitude, später dann mit Google Maps. Vier weitere Freundinnen und einen Freund kann ich auf Google Maps sehen, das hat bei zwei davon historische Gründe (wir machen das seit Google-Latitude-Zeiten so) und bei den anderen weiß ich es nicht mehr genau.

Nützlich ist das eigentlich nicht, in dieser Situation aus dem Jahr 2010 würde man heute für eine halbe Stunde das Standortteilen in irgendeinem Messenger einschalten. Im Sommer 2022 habe ich mal im italienischen Teil der Schweiz gesehen, dass Angela Leinen gerade gleich um die Ecke in Italien war, so konnte ich schnell meine Pläne ändern und mit ihr zusammen mit der Bahn nach Klagenfurt reisen. 2023 habe ich, ebenfalls zusammen mit Angela Leinen, bei einer Fahrt durch Luxembourg gesehen, dass wir ganz nah an Roland Krause vorbeifahren, und wir haben uns schnell auf einen Kaffee verabredet. Von diesen seltenen Fällen abgesehen ist es nur so zum Spaß, ich sehe gern die Köpfe der Freund*innen irgendwo in Europa, wenn ich weit genug rauszoome.

Davon abgesehen gibt es eigentlich nur zwei Einsatzzwecke für das dauerhafte Standortteilen, aber die sind beide wichtig: Ich brauche den Standort von Aleks, damit ich sehen kann, wann er von der Uni nach Hause fährt. Ich sage dann dem Hund, dass Aleks gleich kommt. Dann warten wir am Fenster, der Hund freut sich schon mal warm und ich hoffe ihn auf diese Weise mit meiner sehr guten Nase beeindrucken zu können. Es sind für uns beide schöne Minuten.

Außerdem möchte meine Mutter meinen Standort sehen können. Sie findet das beruhigend. Ich fände es auch beruhigend, wenn ich ihren sehen könnte; leider vergisst sie dafür zu oft das Handy zu Hause. Im letzten Sommer kam dieses ständige Standortteilen bei einem Treffen mit der Verwandtschaft zur Sprache, die anwesenden Verwandten (im Alter zwischen 50 und 90) fanden es unmöglich. Das lag nicht an Privatsphärenbedenken. Für sie war es ein Ausdruck schlimmer Überbesorgtheit.

Meiner Mutter ist ziemlich schnell aufgefallen, dass man mich nicht mehr auf der Karte sieht, seit ich Google Maps auf dem Handy nicht mehr auf meine Standortdaten zugreifen lasse. Auf mich gestellt würde ich die Suche nach einer Alternative noch lange vor mir herschieben, aber sie erwähnt es täglich, und mir ist klar, dass ich dieses Problem lösen muss, so lange ich noch bei ihr bin und nicht in Schottland. Ich muss die neue Lösung ja dann auch auf ihren Geräten einrichten.

Aber welche Lösung? ChatGPT schlägt ein Ding namens OwnTracks vor. Ich frage in der Redaktion, ob das jemand nutzt.

Alan Smithee kommentiert: "Oh weh, gucke in das Booklet des mir bislang unbekannten OwnTracks: 'From this point onwards, it gets a bit complicated, but we'll try and ease your way into the world of OwnTracks so you may enjoy it.' und 'To get started you'll need roughly an hour of time and a bit of love of a Linux command line. You'll also need the following:a small dedicated Linux-capable device (e.g. a Raspberry Pi or equivalent) or a dedicated Linux VPS (Virtual Private Server), either at your home or from one of the many VPS providers.'"

ChatGPT tröstet mich und sagt mir, dass ich das alles nicht brauche, weil ich ja schon für Hosting bezahle. Ich kann einfach meinen eigenen Server nehmen. Allerdings scheitere ich beim Versuch, ein dafür nötiges Ding namens Mosquitto zu installieren, schon im allerersten Schritt. Es funktioniert bei mir auf dem Server nicht so wie in der Anleitung beschrieben, und ChatGPT kann mir auch nicht weiterhelfen.

Ich suche weiter und frage in der Redaktion, ob dort jemand Nextcloud benutzt (eine Open-Source-Alternative zum Google-Universum). ChatGPT meint nämlich, dass es damit auch gehen müsste. Leider sagt es außerdem: "If you set up Nextcloud properly with Docker or a managed VPS, it requires: Minimal effort (15-30 min/month) if no major issues arise." Diese Aussage hat mehrere Stellen, die mir nicht gefallen: 1. Docker, 2. 15-30 Minuten Arbeit jeden Monat, und 3. "if no major issues arise".

Gregor Meyer betreibt mehrere Nextcloud-Instanzen und sagt: "Ich kann Dir das relativ günstige Managed-Nextcloud-Hosting bei hosting.de ans Herz legen, die installieren nicht bloß und lassen einen ab da dann alleine, sondern kümmern sich auch um Updates. Für private Zwecke prima und mit extrem wenig Aufwand verbunden. Man installiert dann seine gewünschten Apps und es funktioniert ganz gut, wenn man nicht allzuviel erwartet. Betrieb auf einem Uberspace ist aber auch kein nennenswertes Problem mehr. Die Zeiten, dass jedes Update (von OwnCloud damals noch) ein Abenteuer ist und einem um die Ohren fliegt, sind vorbei."

Das klingt gut. Ich lasse mir bei hosting.de eine kostenlose Managed Nextcloud zum Testen einrichten, stelle aber bald fest, dass es dort kein Nextcloud Maps gibt (was ich für die Standortsache brauche). Deshalb buche ich nach ein paar Tagen Nachdenken doch die Managed Nextcloud bei Ionos, wo ich sowieso schon Kundin bin. Es ist teurer dort, aber dafür kann ich die Maps-App und die Phonetrack-App installieren, die ich brauche. ("Apps" scheint in diesem Kontext eine so irreführende Benennung zu sein wie "Server" bei Discord, es ist nicht dasselbe wie Apps auf dem Handy, oder vielleicht doch irgendwie, ich blicke noch nicht durch.)

Jetzt kommt eine Phase, über die ich nicht viel aufschreiben kann, weil sie äußerst verwirrend war und ich alles sofort wieder vergessen habe. Ich weiß nur noch, dass sie mich zeitweise sehr wütend gemacht hat. Das ist ungerecht von mir, denn es sind ja alles kostenlose Open-Source-Dinge, die von Freiwilligen gemacht werden und ich kann froh sein, dass sie überhaupt existieren. Ich finde diese Wut also falsch, aber sie war nun mal da und soll hier dokumentiert werden. Auszüge aus dem Redaktionschat:

"Es ist wirklich sauschwer, es gibt kaum Anleitungen dafür und ChatGPT rät auch nur rum. Ich bin kurz davor, ganz aufzugeben. Das sind alles Apps, die ungefähr mit der Usability von Linux vor 30 Jahren daherkommen. Man kriegt keine brauchbaren Fehlermeldungen, es passiert nur einfach nichts, es wird nichts angezeigt, es ist ein langes Stochern im Dunkeln. Ich kann es mir nur so erklären, dass Leute, die sich für Privatsphäre, also Nextcloud, interessieren, in insgesamt null Fällen auch ihren Standort dauerhaft mit einer anderen Person teilen wollen, und es deshalb einfach nichts dazu gibt. Jemand bei Reddit: 'Incredible how one can write this extensive documentation and manage to explain so little.'" Das wird wohl noch so 5-10 Jahre dauern, bis das irgendwie halbwegs brauchbar wird. Oder nein, 20. Es dauert ja immer alles 20 Jahre.

Aber ich habe mich jetzt in dem Problem festgebissen, und für manche Leute scheint es (Reddit zufolge) mit OwnTracks und Phonetrack irgendwie zu funktionieren. Sie sagen nur nicht, wie.

Schließlich finde ich doch noch raus, wie es geht. Es steht wirklich nur in einer einzigen Redditdiskussion. Aber wenn man erst mal weiß, wie es geht, ist es eigentlich nicht schwer. (Alles Folgende bezieht sich nur auf Android-Handys. Wie es bei iPhones gehen würde, weiß ich nicht.)

Eine Person (also z.B. ich) braucht eine Nextcloud mit den "Apps" "Maps" und "Phonetrack".

In Phonetrack (in der Nextcloud-Ansicht im Browser) legt man eine neue Sitzung an und gibt ihr irgendeinen Namen. (Neben dem Namen der Sitzung ist so ein kleiner Einschalter. Ich vermute, man muss den einschalten.)

An dieser Sitzung gibt es ein Link-Symbol mit zwei Kettengliedern. Wenn man draufklickt, bekommt man viele Optionen angezeigt, darunter auch "Owntracks (HTTP-Modus) URL". Diese URL kopiert man.

Auf den Handys, die ihren Standort übermitteln sollen, installiert man die Owntracks-App. Es ist eine sehr rätselhafte App, aber man muss auch fast nichts mit ihr machen. Man muss ihr nur alle Rechte geben, nach denen sie fragt, und dann in den Einstellungen unter "Connection" von "MQTT" auf "HTTP" umschalten. In dem Feld darunter fügt man die gerade kopierte URL ein.* Sie endet mit so was Ähnlichem wie "MyDevice", das ersetzt man durch so was wie z.B. "Kathrin".

Jetzt dauert es vielleicht ein bisschen, aber dann werden die Standorte der Handys, auf denen man das gemacht hat, in der Phonetrack-Ansicht von Nextcloud im Browser angezeigt.

* An dieser Stelle ist nur Platz für eine einzige URL. Kann also jedes Handy seinen Standort immer nur mit einer einzigen Phonetrack-Sitzung teilen? Keine Ahnung.

Einziges verbleibendes Problem: Ich kann jetzt meine Mutter und Aleks sehen, die beiden sehen mich aber nicht. Die OwnTracks-App selbst zeigt die Standorte der anderen nicht an, obwohl sie es behauptet und auch einen Menüpunkt "Friends" hat. ChatGPT ist dabei überhaupt keine Hilfe, es behauptet irgendwas über angeblich existierende Interface-Elemente von OwnTracks, aber das denkt es sich alles nur aus. Bleibt ihm ja auch nichts anderes übrig, die Sache ist nirgends dokumentiert.

Die Phonetrack-App, die es auch als separates Ding fürs Handy gibt, kann zwar alle Standorte anzeigen, es ist aber unschön kompliziert, sie einzurichten. Man braucht dafür erst mal den alternativen App Store F-Droid, denn nur dort bekommt man sie, und eventuell braucht man außerdem die Nextcloud-App, damit die Phonetrack-App funktioniert.

Notgedrungen richte ich das alles - F-Droid, Nextcloud, Phonetrack – trotzdem auf dem Mutterhandy ein, denn auf ihrem iPad, das sie viel lieber benutzen würde, geht es gar nicht. Dann erkläre ich ihr: Also erst hier drücken, dann da, dann da auf die drei Striche, nein, nicht da, sondern da, und dann hier … Wir seufzen beide und wissen, dass das niemals klappen wird.

In Nextcloud im Browser werden die Standorte schön und verständlich angezeigt.

Wir sehen einander auf dem Screenshot alle drei, weil ich zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht wusste, wie es anders geht. Es geht aber auch anders, man muss dann nur gesonderte Sitzungen einrichten (glaube ich).

Während ich mich noch damit abzufinden versuche, dass diese schöne Ansicht eben nur ich sehen kann, fragt Oliver Laumann: "Funktioniert es denn nur im Browser auf dem Laptop oder auch im Browser auf dem Handy? Falls letzteres, hättest Du doch erstmal eine Lösung. Man ist ja nicht gezwungen, auf dem Handy eine App zu verwenden, wenn dieselbe Funktion im Browser genutzt werden kann. Man kann ja einen Link auf eine Webseite (die dann im Browser geöffnet wird) auch auf den Homescreen legen. "

Ich habe nicht vergessen, dass diese Option existiert, ich war nur der falschen Meinung, dass es mit einer gesonderten App auf jeden Fall einfacher gehen wird. Ich richte meiner Mutter und Aleks jeweils einen eigenen Account in meiner Nextcloud ein. Auf den iPad-Homescreen meiner Mutter lege ich die Phonetracks-Ansicht von Nextcloud in Safari als Quadrätle. Dieses Quadrätle merkt sich das Login und auch, dass man direkt zur Phonetracks-Ansicht gelangen möchte. Damit funktioniert es jetzt genau wie von meiner Mutter erhofft. Sie muss sich nur noch merken, wie das Icon aussieht, sonst nichts.

Falls irgendjemand dieser Anleitung folgt und/oder neue Erkenntnisse beitragen kann, ergänze ich sie gern. Es ist nämlich eventuell die einzige, die es gibt.

Update Juni 2025: Das Standortteilen funktioniert auf diesem Weg schlecht bis gar nicht. Aus unklarem Grund werden meistens nur uralte Standorte angezeigt, das nutzt mir nichts. Im April verliere ich die Geduld und verwende wieder Google Maps. Im Mai lösche ich die Nextcloud-, Phonetracks- und OwnTracks-App. Wenn es noch nicht geht, dann geht es halt noch nicht.
