you grew despite
the lack of sunlight
scattered into rainbows
just barely enough
to illuminate
you grew, a lot.
sometimes, growth can be
deceiving. a signal of danger.
you taught me
of responsibility and fit
and how even the best of intentions
does not justify
harm.

Level 2: These might not grow to fruition but are cute green accents in your home and will give you that dose of dopamine if you successfully grow a little bud: bell pepper, apple seeds, Japanese pumpkin. I’m guessing that if you place any seed from your food scraps into soil surely it will grow something. If it doesn’t, that’s okay too, you were going to compost it in the first place.

who have grown
in-spite of my skill:

Sometimes I fail at potting or propagating a delicate plant and I internalize it as a failure, which it kind of is (in a way that doesn't impact my self-esteem, more of an observation)...
But then I'm like honey I gave you your specific amount of sunlight, your specific amount of water and yet you withered... How have you and your species survived all this time in the wilderness with no human intervention?
And then I realize that I am this plant, with specific needs, and when I mean specific, I mean SPECIFIC.
It's down to luck, I think, whether it's that those circumstances were met, and/or that someone really came along and nurtured me.
And for that I am grateful.
And for that, I will continue to try, within my limited flawed existence, to give back and nurture others as well.
Hi, I'm Lucy Dan, and at this point, every time a plant dies, I write a poem. At this point, I could have a whole anthology. Subscribe for more dead (AND MAYBE ALIVE) plant updates

PLANT UPDATE:
May 20, 2023.
While I thought it would be the basil to die first, the dill suddenly deep dove into "shrivel up and die" territory. The basil lost 3-4 plants but the pot I got had 5-6, so there's actually two lone basil plants still living.
Wish me luck!
Today, we switched to self-watering, because clearly I cannot be trusted.
Plant tips for the following plants MUCH APPRECIATED:
- thyme
- basil
- parsley
