That's just par for the course. The pit gets pretty vicious, and while everyone tries their best to make sure no one gets trampled, broken noses, bruised ribs, a cracked tooth or two, that shit's normal. Gimmicky frontmen will even slash themselves up on stage, puke into the crowd, it's all part of the show. You just kinda go fuckin' wild, y'know? But I've been in the scene sixteen years and I ain't seen shit on Gethsemane Gallows.

They were a small local band, doing local band shit, basement shows, dive bars, that kinda thing. Got two EPs out before their bassist went and OD'd on heroin. No major loss as far as the music was concerned, just the fuckin' bassist, but point is, they were playing shows with hired replacements until they took someone on fulltime. Show I went to, it was some bird in leather just sitting on a barstool in the back of the basement.

First four songs went normal. GG didn't have one of those gimmick frontmen, but they carried the fuckin' energy for sure, the pit was nuts. Amps cranked so high the floor was vibrating, tinnitus already setting in, y'know? Fifth song, I know by heart, Heaven-Sent Sweatshops. 58 seconds. Dirty uninterrupted vocals for the whole thing. Except the drums start and immediately there are backing cleans. The bassist is harmonizing, got herself a mic in front of her stool, didn't even notice.

Man, when I tell you... That voice lit a fuckin' fire in me. Like. Got me going. Like I needed it. I'm trying to keep my language polite here for you but do you understand what I'm telling you? You ever hear a voice that just set you off like that? I hadn't. The pit slowed way the fuck down. I looked around. Dude next to me, some scrawny kid in a Misfits shirt he was fuckin' drowning in, looking over at that bassist like he was in love. And I looked up at her, plucking away at that bass, keeping those clean vox going, and she fucking WINKED at him. Straight at him. This hundred-pound pasty-skinned 19-year-old who had never even heard a Danzig song, you know? And I just thought. I just thought I could show her. Show her what a real man is like. How I was better. So I drew my elbow back, and just fuckin' dusted this kid's nose, you understand, like really just busted his shit concave. Like reconstructive plastic surgery levels.

And goddamn did the pit open back up. The kid buckled backwards and the dude behind him caught him, only to fucking glass his shit with a bottle. Some other guy saw and snatched that dude's legs out from under him and just started stomping the back of his head when he went down, but it didn't seem like he actually gave a shit about protecting the kid cause that poor fuck just fell forward and didn't really move any more. Band wasn't even playing any more, I looked over and the frontman was trying to push past the drummer to get at that bassist bird. Never seen a woman so fuckin' unbothered, she's just sitting there going to town on her bass while the drummer gets his thumb in the frontman's cheek and just tears it open.

And so it goes like that. This bitch just singing and playing while the crowd and band fucking tear each other apart. I'm scared shitless, never seen a show get that out of hand, but I know, I know, I KNOW that if I'm the last one standing, I'll be able to get with her. Didn't happen quite like that though. I get knocked over at some point, and a guy lifts my leg off the ground and stomps it like he's breaking firewood. I see bone and I fuckin' pass out.

Wake up 2 days later in a hospital. Apparently after a full day of having 18 cars parked around the house that was hosting, a neighbor called the police. Only 2 casualties, in all that. But my legs don't work right no more, probably won't ever be any good again. Three months of physio later and I can at least walk on my own. More than those two can say.

Gethsemane Gallows had their shit all deleted by the time I got out of the hospital, no Bandcamp or nothing. No clue if it was to dodge legal liability or what. I don't go to shows any more though. Gives me flashbacks or something. The basslines always sound like that riff she was playing.

Instagram is arguably the birthplace of a concept called 'influencer marketing' (Drenten et al. 2019) - a billion-dollar phenomenon that refers to the utilisation of influential individuals, who are active users online and are willing to share brand messages with their virtual following (cited in Léa et al. 2018, pg. 7). These influencers sometimes referred to as 'microcelebrities', alluding to “a new style of online performance in which people employ webcams, video, audio, blogs and social networking sites to ‘amp up’ their popularity among[st] readers, viewers, and those to whom they are linked online” (Senft 2008, pg. 25). Additionally, the visually-oriented ethos that underpins Instagram fundamentally normalises and encourages ‘microcelebrity’ culture.

To create a commodified and celebrified version of oneself on Instagram typically requires an individual to conform to aesthetic templates that are endorsed by microcelebrity culture (Mavroudis 2020). For female influencers, this refers to the act of adhering to aesthetic templates that define what is considered attractive, sexy and feminine and is thus fundamental in gaining mainstream attention (Drenten et al. 2019). For male influencers, the expectation is that they will contribute to, and engage with, aesthetic templates that assert masculine ideals such as athleticism, strength and dominance (Mavroudis 2020).

Western culture and social media have become saturated with sexual imagery (Ward 2009, pg.3). In conjunction with the proliferation of digital technologies and its accompanying social media platforms, western culture has mainstreamed the pornification of mainstream culture and its ‘porn chic’ aesthetic (Drenten et al. 2018, pg. 41). Pornification refers to the increasing normalisation of displaying one's sexuality and projecting explicit sexual themes in popular culture in a way that reflects the aesthetics of commercial pornography (cited in Mavroudis 2020). Additionally, porn chic refers to “a style that reflects the mainstreaming of the aesthetics of commercial pornography within western societies” (cited in Drenten, Gurrieri and Tyler 2019, pg. 42).

To adhere to these aesthetic templates female users are exerting aesthetic labour through the conscious and purposeful posing of their bodies, as well as the editing of their physical appearance - through both online photo-editing tools and/or plastic surgery - to present a hyper-sexualised version of oneself according to the relevant porn chic branded ideals through performing acts of sexualised labour (Mavroudis 2020). Sexualised labour refers to a form of work that "becomes associated with sexuality, sexual desire and sexual pleasure" (cited in Drenten et al. 2018, pg. 43). Further, The adoption of these porn chic ideals as an aesthetic template for "self-expression and lifestyle choice has come to be known as raunch culture" (Ward 2009, pg.4). Drenten et al. (2019) found "a continuum of pornified self-representations... [by female] social media influencers on Instagram. This ranged from “softer” references – where influencers pose to highlight sexualised body parts and employ “porn chic” gestures such as gently pulling their hair, touching their parted lips and squatting with legs spread to the camera – to images that were hard to differentiate from mainstream commercial pornography" (Drenten et al. 2019). 

These endorsed ideals and aesthetic templates can be unhealthy for users and can indulge fame labour seeking behaviours. Fame labour refers to "the work of managing dissonance between online brands and offline brands" and can result in users striving to emulate aesthetic templates promoted by celebrities and influencers (Mavroudis 2020). In 2017, statistics released by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery denunciated that 42% of surgeons are reporting that their patients are actively seeking aesthetic surgeries to improve their appearance for the purpose of appeasing social media ideals (Dorfman et al. 2018). Ultimately, the cultures that underpin Instagram and similar platforms allow for the idealisation and romanticisation of certain aesthetics and ideals that objectify and degrade women.

In the summer of 2007, Robert Crossfield was digging a trench for a new drain line outside of his home. When he finished, his wife, Joan, noticed a lump on the right side of his chest through his tank top. As a father of five boys, including triplets, this 30-year Philadelphia fireman was concerned about the lump and made an appointment with his primary doctor.

“My doctor didn’t like the look of the lump and suggested I go see a general surgeon at a community hospital to get a biopsy, which I did. Shortly after, I learned that I had a rare cancer called leiomyosarcoma in my chest wall,” shares Bob, who underwent surgery at the same hospital.

“Even after the surgery, my wife kept worrying about my health – and wanted me to go see a cancer specialist,” recalls Bob. Joan’s sister is a wound care nurse at Fox Chase Cancer Center. She urged Bob to make an appointment with Margaret von Mehren, MD, a medical oncologist who specializes in treating patients with sarcoma. “I did my own online research and agreed. I went to see Dr. von Mehren within a few days.”

“When I met with Dr. von Mehren, I was impressed by her confidence and had an immediate trust in her recommendations for my treatment,” Bob recalls. Dr. von Mehren referred Bob to Penny Anderson, MD, a radiation oncologist at Fox Chase.

Dr. Anderson started Bob on a six-week course of radiation. Because leiomyosarcoma is an aggressive cancer, further testing was recommended, including a CT scan, lab work, and a consultation every three months with his team at Fox Chase.

Bob thought his cancer was under control and continued with his normal activities, including a routine colonoscopy. During the test, Bob’s doctor discovered pre-cancerous cells, and in January 2008, Bob underwent surgery at his community hospital to remove a large portion of his colon.

Doctors at Fox Chase continued to monitor Bob’s health. In November 2008, testing revealed a mass on Bob’s lung. The Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Fox Chase performed minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery, called VATS, to remove the mass from Bob’s lung while preserving as much lung tissue as possible. Following surgery, Bob underwent another aggressive course of chemotherapy under Dr. von Mehren’s care to ensure the cancer would not recur.

During his chemotherapy, Bob’s lungs filled with fluid, which can be a side effect of treatment. A pulmonary specialist at Fox Chase evaluated Bob and admitted him to the hospital at the Center. “The pulmonary department at Fox Chase is remarkable,” beams Bob.

Within a few months, Bob was back at Fox Chase – this time for renal cancer. Rosalia Viterbo, MD, FACS, a urologic surgeon who specializes in kidney surgery, performed the delicate procedure robotically. “Dr. Viterbo is such a genuine person; I look forward to our yearly visits now,” shares Bob. “She’s had two children in the last couple years. She is such a great listener and easy to talk to, I just know she’s a great mom.”

Bob’s experience with cancer didn’t end there. In March 2010, Bob experienced pain in a muscle near his right side. The sarcoma had recurred. Jeffrey M. Farma, MD, FACS, a surgical oncologist at Fox Chase, performed two surgeries to remove the tumors. Again, Bob underwent six weeks of intense radiation therapy. “That’s when I realized how aggressive sarcoma can be,” Bob says.

With renal, colon, and metastatic sarcoma in his right chest cavity, it was a struggle to keep in good spirits. “My wife and kids are what kept me going during these difficult times,” he says. “The guys from the fire department were there for everything. We laughed, we cried, we talked. I am really blessed to have such a strong bond with such special people. With everything I was facing, I believed I had so much to be thankful for.”

With the objective of keeping the cancer under control, Bob began a six-week course of inpatient chemotherapy prior to surgery to decrease the size of the mass. Subsequently, Dr. Farma performed two surgeries on his lower back and a radical surgery on his right chest wall.

Sameer Patel, MD, FACS, and Neal Topham, MD, FACS, reconstructive surgeons at Fox Chase, performed several procedures on Bob’s chest wall. During one, Dr. Patel placed a wound vac into Bob’s torso using the same procedure used on veterans for injuries sustained from explosive devices. The results were remarkable enough for doctors from all over the country to view his results.

“During my many procedures at Fox Chase, Dr. Farma, Dr. Patel, and Dr. Topham treated me with respect and compassion,” Bob says. “What they were able to accomplish was incredible.” Bob underwent additional surgeries in the summer of 2013 and 2014. Since his last surgery in July of 2014, the scans have been clear.

As a result of so many surgeries, Bob experienced nerve pain in his chest. Dr. Topham recommended physical therapy at Fox Chase to improve Bob’s range of motion. “The rehabilitation was so helpful,” he says. “To have a top-notch rehab facility under the same roof was very convenient. The therapists are really caring and great at what they do.”

Bob is committed to serving the community. In addition to his 30 years of service as a Philadelphia firefighter, he has been with FEMA since 1994, and was among the team of first responders to the 9/11 disaster where he assisted at Ground Zero the first nine days.

With one son in college, one son in high school, and his triplet sons in middle school, Bob says he’s back to work and glad to be back with the guys at the firehouse again. He sees Dr. Farma and Dr. von Mehren every three months for scans and is forever grateful to the entire team at Fox Chase for saving his life.

“Dr. Farma is a local guy. We get our hair cut at the same barber. He’s a family man, a real genuine person and a terrific doctor. When I go to see him with my wife after the testing, he’s always calm and straightforward with us. A handshake, a hug – he really connects with you. You can see it in his eyes, he really cares,” Bob says.

When Bob reflects on the bleak prognosis he was given several years ago, he attributes his success to his love of God, family and friends, his fellow firefighters, and the doctors and nurses at Fox Chase.

“I’ve had aggressive cancers, and multiple cancers, but today I feel healthy again,” admits Bob. “This is a battle I’ll never give up because I have way too much yet to see and to live for. When I see a worry in my sons’ eyes, I always tell my boys we must keep pushing forward and always go straight ahead. I feel very grateful that we chose Fox Chase to guide us and be with us all the way through this trying time for our family.”

“We used to see the same friendly faces day after day and soon began sitting together. We made some great friends with some of the employees at Fox Chase.”

In 1991, Dr. Mary Daly, a medical oncologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center, created the Family Risk Assessment Program, to research the genetic risk of certain types of cancer. In order to get the program off the ground, she needed to recruit participants in the program.

“Dr. Daly’s goal is to reduce the occurrence of cancer. She really loves her job.”

At about the same time, Norma Snyder, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, lost her mother to ovarian cancer. When she saw the notice that Fox Chase was studying the genetic link to ovarian cancer, she jumped at the chance to participate. “I was among the very first women to enroll in the program at Fox Chase,” Norma said. “When I first met Dr. Daly, I knew it was a good match. She is dedicated, compassionate and interested in reducing the occurrence of cancer within families. She really loves her job and cares deeply about her patients.”

As a participant in the Ovarian Cancer Risk Assessment Program, Nancy was caught off guard with a breast cancer diagnosis.

Then, in 1997, Norma, who was just beginning to enjoy her retirement, began experiencing symptoms that caused alarm. Her left breast was red, enlarged, hot, itchy and sore with dimpled skin and an inverted nipple. She immediately showed it to her gynecologist, he was unsure of what it was and said “call your friends at Fox Chase”.

“I never had to ‘shop’ for a hospital.”

“I never had to ‘shop’ for a hospital. As soon as we suspected it was breast cancer, I knew I’d seek the expertise of Dr. Daly,” explained Norma. Dr. Daly saw her the next day to conduct various tests. Norma was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), one of the most aggressive breast cancers.

Norma and her family accepted the news with much concern. “My directness helped me come to terms with my cancer. I am an optimistic person. I thought to myself this is what I have to do and this is what I am going to do,” said Norma.

“Dr. John Hoffman is a very talented surgeon.”

Her treatment started with chemotherapy, in order to shrink the tumor, reduce its spread and make surgery possible. The next step was surgery – a modified radical mastectomy. “Dr. John Hoffman performed the procedure. He is a very talented surgeon and I felt most confident in his care,” said Norma.

Once she recovered from surgery, Norma began five weeks of daily radiation therapy followed by another course of chemotherapy, to prevent the cancer from recurring. Dr. Neal Topham, chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Fox Chase, performed Norma’s breast reconstruction. Finally, Norma took Tamoxifen, a drug that has been shown to reduce recurrence, for 5 years. Today Norma is cancer-free and is under the watchful eye of her doctors.

“If you have to be sick, Fox Chase is a wonderful place to be. I always knew Fox Chase was one of the best cancer hospitals in the country and I am fortunate to live close by,” said Norma. “All of my experiences at Fox Chase were good. I never had anything but nice things to say about Fox Chase.”

Norma and her husband, Melvin, spent many hours in the cafeteria during her treatment. “We used to see the same friendly faces day after day and soon began sitting together. We made some great friends with some of the employees at Fox Chase,” said Norma.

“I wanted to help other women with IBC.”

Norma kept her positive outlook through her ordeal, although there were some challenging moments. She decided to help other women who have been diagnosed. She has served as a volunteer for Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a local organization dedicated to breast cancer survivors. She also founded an Inflammatory Breast Cancer support group at the Wellness Community in Philadelphia http://www.twcp.org/and was the recipient of the Komen Celebrate Life Award in 2003.

A few years ago, Norma was diagnosed as legally blind with Macular Degeneration. That did not stopped her from her favorite hobby – needlework, including knitting, crocheting, needlepoint and quilting until. Although her Macular Degeneration has worsened, she has adapted her love of crafts to make jewelry. She has traveled recently to Vermont for her grandson’s wedding and toured the world. She is delighted to celebrate her 18th year anniversary from cancer.
