Mask Of Proteus

Despite the fear of drowning they arrived at the shore, Buckled over with sea-sickness, Unworthy crew of the Proteus that sank away, Trudging densely shifting sands that lacerate their skin, Toward that ghostly landscape of irreal shapes:

Broken-open nerve endings of a god-thing that waits, Destroyer of bodies that come too close – Beast manacled to itself – illusory conquest – driven out! Blaspheming plague that forced its way inside, From the nothingness of space where the sea divides.

Ripping each other apart in majestic, Nile wastelands, Imagination born of discarded temptation, Hating each from the moment they first laid eyes, Like the creature itself asleep on a bed of old rigging, Ligaments torn from washed-up vessels – passengers.

Mouth foaming, rabid with hunger, they’re also broken, Allowing too much of artifice to enter the dream, Old bones picking up to shatter a glory they once had, Monstrous effacement that saved their skin, Rotting wood of an ancient shipyard where time began.

They’ve returned to the sanctuary that bore them out, Aged custodians of silent desperation – Naked all except for their flagging logic, irresolute,         Cavernous feeling of a maelstrom as it climbs, Blotting out sun, sky or whatever exists without them.
