Les bonhommes de neige pochoirs

Voici une de mes nouvelles création avec ces deux bonhommes de neige pochoirs. En effet ce pochoir peut servir a de multiples idées comme : - créer un font de peinture autour du pochoir et ainsi le laisser blanc comme le bonhomme de neige - finaliser le bonhomme en lui rajoutant le nez carotte avec un petit triangle coupé dans du papier orange - Rajouter les yeux - lui rajouter un chapeau que vous aurez découper dans du papier couleur - rajouter pourquoi pas une écharpe - des boutons des ronds de gommettes pour les boutons sur le bidou - etc.. Décoration moderne dans l'intérieur by Henry Delacroix (1907-1974) was published in Paris by S. de Bonadona, likely around 1935. Delacroix studied architecture at the National School of Decorative Arts of Paris joining his father’s architectural firm upon graduation. He made a name for himself reconstructing French cities after World War II, most notably City of 4000 in La Courneuve.  

Capturing Delacroix’s penchant for modern art deco inspired interiors, Décoration moderne dans l'intérieur is a portfolio of the genre’s luminaries. The publication contains forty-eight vibrant pochoir (stencil coloring) printed plates of designs by Francis Jourdain, Pierre Chareau, Georges Djo-Bourgeois, and the author, Henry Delacroix himself. He also included a seemingly heartfelt introduction that loosely translates to the idea of a man’s physical and spiritual needs being met through the luxury of a home that can facilitate the rest needed to nurture his imagination.  

Delacroix produced several portfolios of this kind showcasing ideas for an array of architectural settings and including painterly accessories inspired by Chagall and Matisse. A delight for anyone interested in interior design or color theory! Our copy of Décoration moderne dans l'intérieur is part of a gift from the estate of our dear friend Dennis Bayuzick.

Storied Leaves: Unveiling the Library's Rare Art Book Collection

Visit Minneapolis Central Library to see Storied Leaves: Unveiling the Library’s Rare Art Book Collection! The exhibit, located in Cargill Gallery, features over 80 titles from our rare art folio collection and includes some really stunning prints of art from all over the world! There’s also some library/collection history, explanations of printing techniques, and more. The exhibit runs October 4 – November 29, 2023.

Travel through time and across the globe as you explore the library's rare Art Book Collection. This vibrant exhibit showcases art from six continents—Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania—spanning ancient to contemporary times. Produced between 1850 and 1950, the works in this exhibit are leaves from folios, or individual pages contained within portfolios. Most have been carefully hand-printed, stenciled or hand-colored. Delve into the stories of these unique prints to learn how this remarkable collection came to be at Minneapolis Central Library, gain insights into the art and craft of printing, and be inspired to connect with art at your library. This exhibit is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

It’s Fine Press Friday!  

This week we’re highlighting our 1942 Nonesuch Press edition of French Naturalist writer Guy de Maupassant’s (1850-1893) most popular novel, A Woman’s Life. Translated into English by frequent de Maupassant translator Marjorie Laurie, this publication features an introduction from writer and critic Edmond Jaloux (1878-1949) along with delicately enchanting illustrations by Edy Legrand (1892-1970) which were hand-colored by commercial artist Charlize Brakely (1898-196?), who employed pochoir (stencil coloring) techniques similar to those commonly seen in Parisian fashion illustration. The work was planned and published in London by book designer Frances Meynell (1891-1975) and composed in Monotype cochin typeface by the New York Monotype Composition Company, with letterpress elements printed by Quinn & Boden Company. Meynell and Nonesuch press were known for using a small hand press (an Albion Press) in the design process and mechanical printing techniques in the production process to create books that emulated the quality of hand press publications.  

De Maupassant’s work depicted the stratification of human experience across class divides in French society and portrayed the constraints of gender roles in the 19th century with sensitivity and depth. Though A Woman’s Life centers around the personal tragedies and mounting dissatisfactions of Jeanne (an upper-class heiress) it is balanced by characters like Rosalie, a single mother from the working-class peasantry whose own background and perspective on Jeanne’s privilege complicate a purely sympathetic view of her story.
