Hi Kdin! I’ve got a Pokémon question for you. My 6yo daughter got Pokémon cards for Christmas and now she wants to start collecting & getting into it. Do you have a suggestion as to where I should start her? It’s been so long for me & I never got super into it but I wanna support what she wants to learn. Thanks!

First of all...

That’s Adorable~

Okay, onto collecting Pokémon cards!

First you’ll need to figure out exactly what your kid wants to collect Pokémon cards FOR.

Do they want to play the game? Just collect the cards? Are there certain types they like? Specific Pokémon? Favorite gym leaders/trainers? This is a conversation to have with the kiddo!

Second, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the entire set and make sure you’re not going to end up on either a wild goose chase or end up paying way too much for a card. For this I recommend the Pokecollector app.

Third, and this is the important one. Card packs are essentially the old version of video game Loot Boxes, so be very careful as the collecting can get expensive quickly. That means if your little Pokémon Master is looking for JUST ONE CARD, it may be cheaper to find the card loose rather than searching through hundreds of dollars worth of card packs.

That said, opening up cards, talking about new sets, looking at the old cards Vs the new ones, building this little collection... it’s a great bonding experience and it’s worth investing time into for the memories alone.
