Name: Umeya Zakkaten
Debut: 1986
Grandma Ume owns and runs a convenience store where she is frequently visited by her friends, children and grandchildren. She has a small brown cat called Tora (which may be a reference to one of the cats in Noranekoland, another obscure 80s Sanrio character).
She has two close friends, Grandma Oyone and Grandma Osetsu. Oyone owns a hardware store which is right next to Ume's. The three ladies love to go on island tours together. She also has a boyfriend named Tatsuyoshi, who is said to cherish every gift Ume gives him. He specifically loves the handknitted jumper she made for him.
Many children come to her store asking for her advice, which she gladly gives. Her gentle and kind nature makes her welcoming to young children.
She has her own movie called Pokopon no Yukai na Saiyuuki. She has also made cameos in other Sanrio movies.
Grandma Ume is excellent at playing marbles, and juggling with temari balls and beanbags. She also enjoys sewing and making rice balls. Her birthday is May 18th.
She was designed by Tomoe Iwata
Grandma Ume is one of my favourite Sanrio characters. She represents a nostalgic and quiet Japanese way of life. I can imagine going into her store and being pleasantly greeted by her.
I also like that she has a vibrant and fulfilling life. She has an active social circle, close contact with her family, a job, frequent vacations, even a boyfriend.
I also love her design and how her elderliness is a focal part of her cuteness instead of a hinderance. The wrinkles are a key asset to her adorableness. Being old is represented in many ways but it is not often represented as cute, which is a shame because I think old people are so cute!
