"Proving that change is possible if the will to create it is present, Chinese megacities like Beijing that were once famous for their apocalyptic grey skies are enjoying the lowest levels of air pollution they’ve experienced in the 21st century.
Falling 42% from an average high in 2013 when Chinese air pollution was higher than 50 particles per cubic centimeters of city air, the change has increased the lifespan of Chinese urbanites by 2.2 years.
The news comes from a report published by the University of Chicago called the Air Quality Life Index which listed some of the actions taken by the Chinese government to reduce air pollution, described by the CCP as a “war on pollution.”
This has included reducing the presence of heavy industry like steel production in city centers, as well as restricting coal power plants from being built inside cities while shuttering those that were already there.
Some cities like Beijing have reduced the number of cars allowed on the roads during peak hours, similar to London’s congestion charge. Lastly, China’s mass urban tree-planting campaigns have been well documented.
While the life expectancy has risen on average 2.2 years, some cities have seen far more drastic increases. Citizens living under the new “Beijing Blue,” are predicted to live 4 additional years, while those 11 million in the north-central city of Baoding are predicted to gain 6.
“At the foundation of those actions were common elements: political will and resources, both human and financial, that reinforced each other,” the report said. “When the public and policymakers have these tools, action becomes much more likely.”
In fact, the decline in China’s pollution levels has been so drastic that it lowered the world average, which the report says would have increased if not for the Middle Kingdom’s war on pollution.
Although Chinese city air is still several times higher than the WHO’s recommended minimum, it shows what’s accomplishable with political and civic effort—particularly to its neighbors in South Asia where the report warns air quality is worsening."

Tips for Maintaining Healthy Soil and Growing Nutrient-Rich Food: Sustainable Agriculture
Imagine biting into a juicy, ripe tomato, bursting with flavor, or crunching on a carrot that's just as sweet as it is crunchy. Now, what if you could grow these in your backyard, and what's more, the nutrient content was through the roof? Well, the secret lies beneath your feet - in the soil.
Healthy soil is the bedrock of a bountiful garden. It's where your food begins its journey, drawing vital nutrients that eventually end up on your plate. But how can you ensure your soil is teeming with everything your plants need?
"Take care of the soil, and the soil will take care of your food."
That's the mantra of sustainable agriculture. It promotes the growth of nutrient-rich food while preserving the environment. But it's not just for large-scale farmers. You too can be a part of this movement, and your backyard garden is the perfect place to start.
Tips for Maintaining Healthy Soil and Growing Nutrient-Rich Food: Sustainable Agriculture
What is Sustainable agriculture?
Sustainable agriculture refers to farming practices that respect the ecological cycles, enhance soil fertility and biodiversity, and promote fair treatment of workers. This approach aims at providing healthy food without damaging the environment or threatening human health. Through sustainable agriculture, we can produce nutrient-rich food while preserving our planet for future generations.
Want a rich harvest? It all starts with the soil. The secret to growing nutrient-packed food is maintaining a healthy soil ecosystem.
This is where sustainable agriculture comes into play. Think of your soil as a bustling city. It's teeming with microscopic organisms, each performing vital roles. They help break down organic matter, control pests, and even improve the soil's structure, making it easier for plants to access water and nutrients.
Nurture this ecosystem, and your plants will thank you with bountiful, nutrient-rich harvests. So, how exactly do you maintain healthy soil? It starts with organic matter.
Compost, cover crops, and organic mulches are your soil's best friends. They feed the soil's microorganisms, improve its structure, and gradually release nutrients that plants need to grow. Similarly, don't be too quick to pull out your till. Tilling can disturb the soil's ecosystem, decreasing its fertility over time. Instead, opt for no-till or reduced-till methods. These practices help maintain the soil's structure, retain moisture, and reduce erosion. Lastly, don't forget to rotate your crops.
Different plants have different nutrient needs and pest profiles. By changing what you plant each season, you help maintain a balance of nutrients in the soil and ward off pests. Remember, the health of our soil mirrors the health of our food. Sustainable agriculture isn't just about growing food today. It's about ensuring we can continue to grow nutrient-rich food for generations to come.
The Importance of Soil Health for Nutrient-Rich Food
Let's start with a simple truth - healthy soil equals healthy food. You can't have nutrient-rich fruits and veggies without first ensuring the ground they grow in is well-nourished. It's a symbiotic relationship that's as old as Mother Nature herself.
So, why is soil health so important? Fantastic question! Soil health directly impacts the amount and diversity of nutrients your food can absorb. Think of it like this: your soil is the kitchen, and your plants are the chefs. Without a well-stocked kitchen (healthy soil), your chefs (plants) can't whip up those nutrient-rich dishes (fruits and veggies) you love.
The Role of Soil Microorganisms
Picture this - billions of microscopic organisms, all working tirelessly to break down organic material and make nutrients available to your plants. Sounds like a science fiction film, right? But it's happening right now, in your garden's soil. These microscopic heroes, known as soil microorganisms, play a pivotal role in maintaining soil health.
From bacteria to fungi, these tiny workhorses work in harmony with your plants, helping them absorb nutrients more efficiently. Without these little guys, your soil would be like a desert - devoid of life and nutritional value.
Practices to Promote Soil Health
Now that you understand the importance and role of soil health, let's talk about how you can improve it. It's easier than you might think! Here are a few sustainable farming methods that can help:
Composting: This is like making a multivitamin for your soil. Composting kitchen scraps and yard waste creates a rich organic material full of nutrients your plants will love.
Crop Rotation: Planting different crops in the same area over a period helps prevent soil-born diseases, and some plants even add nutrients back into the soil.
Cover Cropping: These plants are grown to be plowed back into the soil, improving soil structure and adding organic matter.
Remember, a little love for your soil can lead to a major payoff in the kitchen. Healthy soil produces nutrient-rich food, and that's a win for everyone!

Microplastics are now a ubiquitous part of our daily physical reality. These minuscule fragments of degrading plastic now suffuse our air, our soil, the food we eat and the water we drink. They’re being detected everywhere researchers look, from Antarctic sea ice to human brains. As scientists develop a better idea of where microplastics are accumulating in the environment, they’re just beginning to understand how these pollutants affect one of the most essential and widespread kingdoms of life on Earth: plants. A new study, published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, reveals how microplastics hinder photosynthesis across a wide range of plant species—including crucial food crops. “It’s really scary,” says Marcus Eriksen, a marine scientist at the 5 Gyres Institute, a nonprofit plastic pollution research organization, who was not involved in the study. The researchers found that the presence of microplastics (plastic particles that are less than five millimeters in size) can reduce photosynthesis by as much as 7 to 12 percent, on average. That could range from 6 to 18 percent in terrestrial crops, 2 to 12 percent in marine plants such as seaweed and 4 to 14 percent in freshwater algae. “The exposure to microplastics was not surprising at all,” Eriksen says. “What surprised me was the level of impact.” A generalized reduction in photosynthesis at such a scale could have major implications for the global food supply, according to the study’s researchers.

physically restraining myself from going on a massive tangent about ecosystems and food webs in my bloodborne fic
#just envsci major moments :pensive:#bloodborne#i knowwwwww the game's world isn't supposed to make physical sense but like. the relationships between different trophic levels is just.#like at each level from producers -> consumers -> consumers there's a reduction in biomass and a simultaneous accumulation of pollutants#which the body is not capable of purging. your biomass is not equal to the sum of the biomass you consume because a lot is burned for energ#however because your body isn't capable of getting rid of certain pollutants you retain all the pollutants from the biomass you consume#thus the concentration of pollutants increases with each trophic level. thinking about that in relation to. for example.#blood of ebrietas -> blood of yharnamites -> blood of hunters -> blood of vileblood hunters -> annalise#maybe that's why her blood is so corrupted. because of the accumulation of pollutants. If British Olympic superhero Ben Ainslie finds the money to lead his fourth America’s Cup challenge in 2027, it will be with his fourth team name. He began his 2017 campaign as Ben Ainslie Racing, which then became Land Rover BAR. Needing more sponsorship, he shifted to INEOS Britannia for the 2021 and 2024 efforts, but now is branded as Athena Racing.
However, he has hung on to the BAR acronym and is a partner in BAR Technologies which, unlike the INEOS petrochemicals company, seeks to develop technology that is good for the environment. Even more ironic, BAR Technologies is parlaying their sailing DNA by fitting an oil tanker with sails.
The first ever modern cargo ship purpose-built to combine both diesel and wind propulsion will be launched from a shipyard in Shanghai at the end of May. The hybrid vessel will feature three rigid sails that will allegedly save about 1.5 tonnes of fuel a day.
According to John Cooper of Bar Technologies, the rollout of wind-powered ships will revolutionize the tanker industry. “It’s a massive fuel saving. The numbers are so big that I think, in 18 months, half of all tankers and bulk carriers ordered will have wind propulsion.”
#That seems… kinda counterproductive… but any reduction in pollution is good#sailing#Environment#news#Link
