Maybe Shen Yuan is transmigrated as baby Shen Jiu just as Airplane is transmigrated as baby Shang Qinghua, but Shen Yuan dislikes his role so he defies the System. Eventually Shen Yuan is got rid of, kind of gone, shattered, scattered in the PIDW world, as a virus or something that is exposed to and has access to the essence of the world, and the threads of the past, present, and future…
Thus Original Shen Jiu's soul survives and lives his slave life. He occasionally hears whispers to go beg for money on certain streets on certain days, which there are always kind, rich people passing by, who give him more money and food than on other streets.
(As in Shen Yuan uses his lingering connection with Shen Jiu's body to help.)
Sometimes the voice tells him to turn to certain alleys and hide behide, in, or under certain objects or places, while running away from bullies or slavers who come to punish him, and he never gets caught.
One day the voice tells him to eat particularly, obviously spoiled food. Shen Jiu knows it's bad for him, but the voice nags incessantly.
In the end, Shen Jiu eats it, and gets sick severely. Yue Qi fusses over him the whole day in a dark corner away from disturbances and commotions.
That day, Shiwu gets trampled by the Qiu young master. . . .
(Well, Shen Jiu isn't imprisoned in the Qiu. They may or may not become cultivators or at least in Cang Qiong. They may but take a detour to equip and prepare themselves better.
They may meet important characters in PIDW later, but now in different situations and statuses, and recontinue the plot)
The voice may point Shen Jiu to do something and impress a middle aged craftsman and has him buy them to work for him. Shen Jiu and Yue Qi may create valuable enough products which the man decides are able to buy themselves freedom as a gift, and adopts them.
Maybe, that man is a swordsmith, and Shen Yuan uses his nerd knowledge to tell Shen Jiu to defeat the weak enough beasts with certain weaknesses, or gather certain spiritual materials in certain places in certain ways. Shen Jiu may subconsciously uses qi to fuse the particularly high grade materials, forges, and sharpens the swords and other weapons, and they come out almost legendary enough to catch Wei Qingwei's eyes. Or the previous Wan Jian Peak Lord's.
Because why would special swords exist only Hong Jing and Xin Mo?
Hm.

Molly McGhee’s “Jonathan Abernathy You Are Kind”
Tumblr media
Jonathan Abernathy You Are Kind is Molly McGhee's debut novel: a dreamlike tale of a public-private partnership that hires the terminally endebted to invade the dreams of white-collar professionals and harvest the anxieties that prevent them from being fully productive members of the American corporate workforce:
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/734829/jonathan-abernathy-you-are-kind-by-molly-mcghee/
Though this is McGhee's first novel, she's already well known in literary circles. Her career has included stints at McSweeney's, where she worked on my book Information Doesn't Want To Be Free:
https://store.mcsweeneys.net/products/information-doesn-t-want-to-be-free
And then at Tor Books, where she worked on my book Attack Surface:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250757531/attacksurface
But though McGhee is a shrewd and skilled editor, I think of her first and foremost as a writer, thanks to stunning essays like "America's Dead Souls," a 2021 Paris Review piece that described the experience of multigenerational debt in America in incandescent, pitiless prose:
https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2021/05/17/americas-dead-souls/
McGhee's piece struck at the heart of something profoundly wrong in American society – the dual nature of debt, which represents a source of freedom for the wealthy, and bondage for workers:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/19/zombie-debt/#damnation
When billionaire mass-murderers like the Sacklers amass tens of billions of liabilities stemming from their role in deliberately starting the opioid crisis, the courts step in to relieve them of their obligations, allowing them to keep their blood-money:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/11/justice-delayed/#justice-redeemed
And when Silicon Valley Bank collapses due to mismanagement by ultra-wealthy financiers, the public purse yawns open and billions flow out to ensure that the wealthiest investors in the country stay whole:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/18/2-billion-here-2-billion-there/#socialism-for-the-rich
When predatory payday lenders target working people and force them into bankruptcy with four-digit APRs, the government intervenes…to save the lenders and keep workers on the hook:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/29/planned-obsolescence/#academic-fraud
"Debtor vs creditor" is the oldest class division we have. The Bronze Age custom of jubilee – the periodic cancellation of all debts – wasn't some weird peccadillo. It was essential public policy, and without jubilee, the hereditary creditor class became the arbiter of all social priorities, destabilizing great nations and even empires by directing production to suit their parochial needs. Societies that didn't practice jubilee (or halted it) collapsed:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/08/jubilant/#construire-des-passerelles
Today's workers are debt burdened at scales and in ways that defy comprehension, the numbers are so brain-breakingly large. Students who take out modest loans and pay them off several times over remain indebted decades later, with outstanding balances that vastly outstrip the principle:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/12/04/kawaski-trawick/#strike-debt
Workers who quit dead-end jobs are billed for five-figure "training repayment" bills that haunt them to the end of days:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/04/its-a-trap/#a-little-on-the-nose
Hospitals sue indigent patients at scale, siccing debt-collectors on people who can't pay – and were entitled to free care to begin with:
https://armandalegshow.com/episode/when-hospitals-sue-patients-part-2/
And debt collectors are drawn from the same social ranks as the debtors, barely trained and unsupervised, engaging in lawless, constant harassment of the debtor class:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/12/do-not-pay/#fair-debt-collection-practices-act
McGhee's "American Dead Souls" crystallized all of this vast injustice into a single, beautiful essay – and then McGhee crystallized things further by posting a public resignation letter enumerating the poor pay and working conditions in New York publishing, triggering mass, industry-wide resignations by similarly situated junior editorial staff:
https://electricliterature.com/molly-mcghee-jonathan-abernathy-you-are-kind-interview-debut-novel-book-debt/
Thus we arrive at McGhee's debut: a novel written by someone with a track record for gorgeous, brutally insightful prose; incisive analysis of the class war raging in the embers of capitalism's American Dream; and consequential labor organizing against the precarity and exploitation of young workers. As you might expect, it's fantastic.
Jonathan Abernathy is a 25 year old, debt haunted, desperately lonely man. An orphan with a mountain of college debt, Abernathy lives in a terrible basement apartment whose rent is just beyond his means. The only thing that propels him out of bed and into the world are his affirmations:
Jonathan Abernathy you are kind
You are well respected and valued by your community
People, including your family, love you
That these are all easily discerned lies is beside the point. Whatever gets you through the night.
We meet Jonathan as he is applying for a job that he was recruited for in a dream. As instructed in his dream, he presents himself at a shabby strip-mall office where an acerbic functionary behind scratched plexiglass takes his application and informs him that he is up for a gig run jointly by the US State Department and a consortium of large corporate employers. If he is accepted, all of his student debt repayments will be paused and he will no longer face wage garnishment. What's more, he'll be doing the job in his sleep, which means he'll be able to get a day job and pull a double income – what's not to like?
Jonathan's job is to enter the dreams of sleeping middle-management types in America's largest firms – but not just any dreams, their nightmares. Once he has entered their nightmare, Jonathan is charged with identifying the source of their anxiety and summoning a more senior operative who will suck up and whisk away that nagging spectre, thus rendering the worker a more productive component of their corporate structure.
But of course, there's more to it. As Jonathan works through his sleeping hours, he is deprived of his own dreams. Then there's the question of where those captive anxieties are ending up, and how they're being processed, and what new products can be made from refined nightmares. While Jonathan himself is pulling ever so slightly out of his economic quagmire, the people around him are still struggling.
McGhee braids together three strands: the palpable misery of being Jonathan (a proxy for all of us), the rising terror of the true nature of his employment, and beautifully turned absurdist touches that are laugh-aloud funny. This could be a mere novel of ennui and misery but it's not – it's a novel of hilarity and fear and misery, all mixed together in a glorious and terrible concoction that is not like anything else you've ever read.

The Limbo
Tumblr media
A long time ago, before chaos took hold of Earth and its realms, there was an annex called Limbo.
Soul management is only ever easy when dealing with small populations, as any siadar knows. The moment a project expands enough, becomes ambitious, the number of souls being juggled becomes taxing, a hindrance to more pressing matters. Someone else must take on that burden entirely.
Limbo was formed after Eden, as a response to this necessity. This annex specializes in the collection, treatment and subsequent transmission of souls back to the surface or other annexes. It's a recycling system, in simple terminology. Dorem is the entity created to orchestrate these matters.
Without him, the souls of those who die are lost to wander until they perish forever. Without his percision, the stubborn will defy their deaths and crawl their way to the living. Without his care, souls split and fuse and tangle, creating abominations.
Once a bright, hardworking spawn, Dorem was very proficient at his work. He was happy, felt productive and needed, many an angel would personally deliver souls to him, and the soul keeper's dwelling felt lived in. All was well. At some point, Dorem feels a tad overwhelmed with the amount of souls he juggles. But all is fine, his work is good, he's commended and appreciated by his own makers.
So focused on his duties, Limbo's operator doesn't notice a thing when siadar abruptly abandon all.
In fact, he's the last one to know...
Visits and feedback halt entirely, and without highers to take care of population control, Dorem begins drowning in souls. Part of him already knows what has happened, but he doesn't dare leave Limbo, because he's terrified of what he'll find out there. Terrified to confirm that he's truly alone, that his life no longer holds real meaning, he's working for nothing. Towards nothing.
Ages pass. Not even the angels seem to remember him, whatever those pests are up to now. Dorem has ceased to care about most of his work. He gets bored, allowing the turmoiled to rise from the dirt once more in violent, confusing cacophonies, mockeries of life indirectly born of his spite. And when it's all too much, he eats the excess souls. Tossing them into the black abyss of his torso to become part of him, crushed in his shadows.
An eternity spent in Limbo has ruined him. His body is not what it used to be at all. It's tainted, weathered, tired. So so tired. The flesh on his head keeps sealing over his mouth, not that he uses it that much anymore. He's grown powerful without even noticing it, the consumption of souls playing a part in his progressive transformations.
Dorem doesn't know why he decided to enter the surface now of all times. Maybe it's because he's reaching a breaking point, maybe to kill all the undead that keep trying to contact and worship him, maybe to fucking kill himself. Imagine his shock when he sees an angel. His fury. Which only burns hotter as he's told two highers are present on Earth.
It's about time he gets answers. It's about time he gets to punish them. It's about time Dorem can beg for mercy, or even that which has always been denied to him, rest.

You are a Deus Ex Machina
Tumblr media
deus ex machina 1. noun an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived plot device in a play or novel.
The deus ex machina device is often criticized as inartistic, too convenient, and overly simplistic. However, champions of the device say that it opens up ideological and artistic possibilities.
I heard a lot in the law of assumption community that we are "the writer, the director and the main character" of our story. I also know that we are the Gods of our realities. Applying these two principles, that would make us our own deus ex machina. Only us can create the power to create the impossible and have our happy endings.
As with the law, the concept of deus ex machina is also criticized by others because of being too convenient or such a simple solution, defying logic or the plot of how "a normal life should go". But, "normal and logic" will never exist anyway, it is just a construct. Think about it, wouldn't the internet be a deus ex machina for example? Because who would have thought a few years ago that we can communicate with the whole world in just a tiny thing in our hands. The concept was absurd at first but it got manifested into reality. If that can be done out of thin air and made communication better especially during hopeless times and also made things more convenient for all of us, we can also create things that seem illogical at first.
Many of the things we have now are product of manifestation. People can say a lot about "logic" or "science", but I bet science was also something people manifested and persisted to make it become true. Freeze a moment in a paper, record a moment for eternity, communication no matter where you are, being protected from illness, living past certain ages...
What seems to be natural to us now, were deus ex machinas in the past. Now it is time to affirm and manifest whatever we want in our realities so what seems to us as deus ex machina becomes natural. Let's create that machine within us that will defy everything and gives us what we want in our plot, no matter who much people criticize us or rubs the 3D in our face. We have many proof that what seemed like imagination or nonsense at first has become reality. Don't let phrases like "it's too convenient or unrealistic" stop you.
Persist, Manifest, Rewrite your Life, Be your own Deus Ex Machina.

"have you ever thought its because they sell you poison in a bottle, sister?" idc about men or their skin but the whole radfem fearmongering over parabens and 'poison' and 'carcinogens' in skincare is honestly just making us look stupid. i have a serious skin condition that is fixed completely by skincare products. a lot of skincare products are, at worst, completely pointless. but they're not ~poison in a bottle~. i don't get how it can be a problem in itself to care about the health of your skin
hi, thank you so much for your ask!
many skincare products do unfortunately have unregulated, toxic ingredients in them, and the more expensive ones seem to think they can get away with it because of their luxury brand status and flashy advertising
take kylie skin for example, a skincare brand by a billionaire that ruined the skin barriers of many, and caused several breakouts because of the horrible ingredients, which included PEG-100, an ethylene oxide used in ww1 to create nerve gas, i.e. poison
many luxury brands, like i referred to in my post by referencing a $250 serum often carry strange smells, or are fragranced, which is not good for the skin, and can dry it out
of course im not anti skincare, especially if you need it
i myself do skincare because my skin can get so dry it can become uncomfortable
i find it an issue, however when women feel forced to purchase expensive, unregulated products to try and keep their skin looking the same as it did at 18, and ultimately end up worsening the state of their skin
i see many women also compare themselves to their male counterparts, wishing that they could also put in the bit of effort they do and still have 'nice skin', all the while trying all sorts of different products, ingredients, some with a big price tag, others not, in a desperate attempt to "defy aging"
its certainly not an issue to take care of your skin, its an issue to feel compelled into purchasing unregulated products in an attempt to have barbie skin
i hope this helps! and i wish you luck with your skin, i know what its like to have skin conditions, it can suck
