one of my favourite genres of "people being online so much they forget they're not American" is talking about their parents getting houses for pennies and not understanding the modern financial struggle. its true and sad if it applies to you but I've seen some polish kids copy it and its so funny bc have you never heard of Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa i robienie alkoholu z landrynek bo wódka droga

Polish Interiors After 1989
Due to the political climate and economic state of Poland during the 80s it was difficult for families to afford or even find furniture. People were often only able to come across one or two matching pieces and as a result it was often the case that wood tones, styles, finishes and fabrics were mismatched.
After the end of communism and the Polish People’s Republic (Polish: Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa, PRL) people were suddenly exposed to wider options through foreign imports.
Personal experience:
Working class family.
Technology was outdated compared to other European countries at the time.
Spending time with family always involved homemade food. Several dishes and a pot of black tea was always on the table when family or friends visited. It was normal to eat together before and after Sunday mass, during dinner (obiad), and an evening meal (kolacja).
Mum: it's not that people didn't have any money, they just didn't have anything to spend it on. She remembers her family having cash saved without any real purpose for it. Not a lot was available to buy and furniture supplies were scarce.

While there is (alas, so far as is known) no Polish blood coursing through this stamp enthusiast’s veins, having been raised on pierogis, kiełbasa, Chopin, and Mila 18 it’s impossible not to feel a marked kinship with the land of the white eagle.  Na zdorovie, Polska!

The Pacification of Wujek was a strike-breaking action by the Polish police and army at the Wujek Coal Mine in Katowice, Poland, culminating in the massacre of nine striking miners on December 16, 1981.
It was part of a large-scale action aimed to break the Solidarity free trade union after the introduction of martial law in Poland in 1981. Although the strike was suppressed, in a longer term, it turned out to be a milestone towards the collapse of the authoritarian system in Poland and, ultimately, to the collapse of the Eastern Bloc.

Random pictures from years gone by.... ZAKAZ FOTOGRAFOWANIA (1990) This sign on the wall of a post office in Gliwice, Poland, was a relic from the communist era - when it was illegal to take photos of "strategic objects" like railway stations and such....

🌻 :)
i'll tell you some history stuff bc i love talking about it
so in Poland (back then PRL - Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa) in 1970 - 1980 a guy named Edward Gierek became the head of the country, 1st secretary of KC PZPR, to be exact. the 70s were really refreshing for Poles - previous head of the country, Władysław Gomułka, wasn't the best at his job and since Gierek took over, he made many things available for them. for example:
- they could provide some things produced elsewhere in shops called 'peweks';
- food and other stuff wasn't bought with money - people had special "documents" that were called 'kartki' (literally, 'papers');
- people could finally go to concerts with artists like Boney M (cue the famous performance of "Rasputin" in Sopot 1979);
and many more things.
however, Gierek did not have this much money of his own and the money used to invent all of these things was lend. Edward had the problem of actually paying the money back afterwards.
anyhow, Poles finally could have a taste of normal life. after so many years of communist oppresion they could have a normal life for once. it's kinda heartbreaking to think about how little fun they could have earlier on. "Czasy Gierka" was probably the best period before the downfall of the USSR.

my former department, from whom i still receive many emails, is called "polish, russian, & lithuanian studies," but abbreviated as PRLS, which for obvious reasons my brain scans every single time as "polska rzeczpospolita ludowa (socjalistyczna)"
