(i just need to rant about my one school course right now so i can vent it and move on because i'm just 😡😡😡 AUUGGHHHH)
so we get marked on weekly discussions, on both our main post and comments we make on classmates' posts. usually zero "feedback" is given for these but last week my prof made a point to praise me for my discussion contributions. but suddenly this week, when i've done nothing different, i'm only getting 50% because not a single one of my comments was "substantial" enough????? (in content; definitely NOT to do with length, because mine ain't short!) lmao what the fuck
and then we had one of THOSE situations where we all get an assignment back and the prof openly admits that most of us did poorly because we "didn't do what was asked"......... and it's one of those things where you're like,, ok so is that just a coincedence?? or do you think the instructions were not clear enough???? who's REALLY at fault here if THAT MANY OF US had the same problem???? HMMMMM
OH. and in said assignment, there's a specific part that had a maximum word count restriction. ok so no more than 400 words... but this part is where i'm supposed to explain myself and my reasoning for my decisions in the first part... so i do that, and i have to leave out some explanations or detailed reasoning to fit within the 400 words... and then the prof makes multiple comments about things, asking questions and wanting more explanation... UHHHHHHH did you READ my assignment?? did you see me technically over the limit anyways? did you see struggling to mention and fully explain everything? did you see me mention those issues you comment on, albeit briefly? WHERE WAS I SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT THEM FURTHER. HOW. if you had given me at least another 100 words to work with, i could have EASILY addressed all those issues!!!! thank you very much!!!!! FUCK.
ok. i do feel better lmao. rant over.😤 if you actually read all of tihs then fuckin kudos to you!!!!! i hope you have a much better day than mine and find $20 on the ground 💸

Ms Smith: I do want to talk for a moment about postsecondary institutions, Mr. Speaker. Let’s be frank. I don’t know if it needs to be said or not, but it’s my observation that at this current moment in time Ottawa’s priorities are not Alberta’s priorities. Alberta has been funding targeted enrolment expansion based on Alberta’s labour market in order to ensure that industry and job creators have the skilled and professional workers that they need. We know with the Dow Chemical petrochemical facility. Whether it’s Air Products, whether it’s pipeline projects, we know that we need to have tens of thousands of skilled construction workers to be able to fuel that growth. We also need tens of thousands of skilled construction workers to be able to build the homes that we need.
Ottawa provides funding specifically in other areas that are not urgently needed in our workplaces and our economy. They specifically fund programs, initiatives, and research that furthers their ideology, and that ideology is often contrary to Alberta’s interests.

is there any mention i've missed of why specifically dennis didn't continue pursuing being a vet since he did finish undergrad? was it just that they bought the bar around the same time as he would've been looking into further school/applications/etc and that was a big enough commitment to decide against it or Something else

Student Celebrations
Tumblr media
Two programs, Act Six and Lake Street Works, celebrated their 2024 classes last week.
Tumblr media
ACT SIX CELEBRATION
The Act Six scholarship provides full-need, full-tuition scholarships for emerging community leaders. On Wednesday, three new cadres of scholarship recipients were announced for three partner schools: Augsburg University, Bethel University, and Concordia College - Moorhead.
Friends, family, and former alumni were all on hand to cheer on this latest group of remarkable students. This year's celebration was also the 10th Anniversary of the Act Six program. Over the last decade, Urban Ventures' Act Six program has helped 379 students pursue their college dreams. Many students are the first in their family to attend college!
The event was attended by many Act Six alumni, there to support the latest additions to the program. During community shoutouts, alumni brought words of encouragement and challenge, inviting the new scholars to make the most of their experience. They also shared about the lasting impact of the program, celebrating their careers, families, home ownership and more that was made possible by this life-changing opportunity.

LAKE STREET WORKS GRADUATION
Lake Street Works, the newest program at Urban Ventures, introduces high school seniors to careers in the trades. Over the past year students gathered after school to explore trade skills like carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and more. Coaches also provide weekly lessons on professional and character development.
The year culminated this Thursday in a graduation ceremony, where the latest class of 26 students gathered with family, friends, partners, and supporters to mark the occasion. In addition to some impressive resume-boosting experiences, each student leaves the program with a "Launch Plan" for what to do next. Some will continue their education at a technical school while others are launching directly into their careers through apprenticeships.
In addition to family and friends, many industry leaders were present to cheer on the students. They reiterated the great need for skilled labor and the importance of programs like Lake Street Works. "We’re here to celebrate the accomplishments of these amazing young people," said Jess Coykendall, the program's director, "And we’re here to share in the excitement around their future and the careers they’ll soon begin.  Because of the people in this room, they have a huge head start."

You make this possible.
This last week was a shining example of Urban Ventures' goal for the children in our neighborhood. With your support, we continue to add to the number of local kids with promising plans and opportunities after high school.
Education changes everything. These students now have a better chance at financial independence and a brighter future, for both them and their families.
Thank you!

Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #37
Oct 4-11 2024
President Biden announced a new EPA rule that will require all lead pipes in America's drinking water systems to be replace with-in 10 years. This builds on the $15 billion the Biden-Harris Administration has already invested in replacing lead pipes nation wide. The administration's focus on this issue has allowed local governments to greatly execrate their lead pipe replacement plans, before Biden took office the city of Milwaukee's timeline for replacing its lead pipes was 60 years, they're now on track to do it in 10. The EPA says there's no safe level of lead in the human body.
Vice President Harris announced she plans to expand Medicare to cover home health care. Currently those who need long term care, are covered by Medicaid, the health program for the poor so have to spend all their savings before they can qualify. This change would allow more seniors to stay in their homes and offer support to caregiving family members. Medicare also covers the disabled thus proving a game changer for the disabled Americans and their families. The Vice President also endorsed expanding Medicare to cover the costs of hearing and vision care.
Medicare released a preliminary list of 101 generic drugs which it would cover that would cost no more than $2 for a month for enrollees. People have long lobbied to allow Medicare to pay for generic drugs which has been resisted by drug companies. Thanks to President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, and in line with a Biden Executive Order Medicare is now working on bring low cost generic drugs to seniors. The list targets some of the most common prescriptions thus will bring savings to the most people.
Domestic Policy Advisor Neera Tanden announced that the Biden-Harris Administration had blown past its goal of hiring 250,000 student support staff for 2024. The joint effort by the Department of Education, AmeriCorps and Everyone Graduates Center managed to hire 320,000 tutors, mentors, student success coaches, postsecondary transition coaches, and student support coordinators nationwide, its goal for the end of 2025.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced $420 million to help get rid of lead paint and other lead hazards from homes. HUD estimates that over 3 million households that have children under the age of 6 live with lead hazards. HUDs grants will go to all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico with particular focus on low income housing.

4, 7 & 18 for the education asks 🥰
Since I'm thinking about AOM, let's talk about Horatio. He has a master's in botany and a slate of certifications from the Botanist's Guild.
4. Did they meet any new friends or start any other significant relationships during university? He spent a year abroad as an exchange student at Christina's alma mater (on another planet that I haven't named, in a nearby locality). That's where he met Christina and they very quickly became friends because neither of them are normal about plants and he could listen to her talk about her research forever. (As I'm writing this I'm realizing Horatio has met Althea? They were never really friends but Althea was also not a Pirate TM then.)
7. What class did they excel in? I had to search botany programs for a bit to figure out what he would have done well in but the second I saw aquatic botany I was like, yup, that. He doesn't actually deal with aquatic plants very much as a live florist, but he's always lived near the sea, and he'll never say no to a class with plant study field trips. As for his Guild certifications, he aced bookkeeping.
18. If your oc participates in any extra-curricular activities or clubs, what are they? How much of their time and energy do these take up? Horatio: I'm gonna find a club that's not related to botany! also Horatio: beekeeping club is the best club
Aside from beekeeping club he became part of the urban exploration club at Christina's school, which is actually in a proper city, unlike Tobarsha University. As a result, he developed side interests in architecture and interior design, which didn't really turn into club involvements but did result in him spending a lot more time in the library and university archives reading up on the history of buildings. He still has a small collection of interior design books.
