Why does no one ask, Master Who?: (#3 - Oh No, He’s Crispy!)

Why does no one ask, Master Who?: A Character Study Series Masterlist
Our next topic to cover in the subject of the Master is his Anakin Skywalker---er, I mean, sudden change in appearance and re-appearance when he surprises us all in the Fourth Doctor’s era. I think this is where his now signature long running gag for ‘coming back from the dead’ without any explanation truly began.
So, because of the tragedy that happened to Roger Delgado, the Master as a character was kept out of stories for quite awhile until the 4th Doctor’s era in 1976′s episode, “The Deadly Assassin.” An episode not only remarkable for bringing back the Master in a MUCH darker state, nearing the end of his regeneration cycle, but the fact this episode began a lot of the mythos of the Time Lords and Gallifrey as we know it. Played by two different actors for two different episodes years apart, the fandom has dubbed the Peter Pratt and Geoffrey Beevers Master’s as the Crispy Master or Decayed Master, due to his decaying form looking like he was fighting with a Jedi for control of the high ground and lost (Still too soon? Okay.)
Tumblr media
In ‘The Deadly Assassin,’ the Master’s disappearance is explained to us when he comes up with a clever plot, sending the Doctor back home to Gallifrey in order to uncover a mystery into the future premotionions of the Lord President’s death (and of course he’s behind it.) This Master is FAR more dark than his previous self, hell-bent on only his survival, even if it means taking the rest of Gallifrey with him to achieve it. Only his hate and need for revenge keeps him going. Although it may seem the Master has finally lost, this is only when we start to realize how great of a survivor he can be when it comes to death.
Making a return in ‘The Keeper of Traken,’ he’s still focused on attaining a body that can handle the presence of a Time Lord. Although he isn’t able to obtain the Doctor’s, using his cunning, the Master ends up stealing the body of Tremas of Traken, finding a way to extend his life a little longer.
Important Character Traits for Crispy!Master:
High sense of Self-Preservation. He doesn’t care what it takes to stay alive. This is the first time we see it with the Master, even if he’s going completely against the Doctor to do so.
Known for being the most ruthless of the Master’s incarnations (and that’s saying something.)
His physical state of being rotten and decayed can be used as a metaphor for how evil he is as an individual. As Geoffrey Beevers remarked; this is what the Master is like without his smooth looks and charm: as he put it, "the essence of the creature.”
However, in Big Finish, thanks to Beevers himself, and the writers, Crispy gets more of a development. Despite being just ruthless because of his current situation, ‘being faced with his own mortality also gives him plenty of poetic and calm moments.’
The Many Explanations for his Crispy State:
Geoffrey Beevers remarked that this is what the Master is like without his smooth looks and charm: as he put it, "the essence of the creature". This seems to be a running theme with this Master. The first Crispy Master is the ugliest and cruellest of all, while the second Crispy seems to have "healed" a little and is a step back towards Delgado behaviour (how much of the "healed" appearance is intentional and how much of it is due to the limitations of Beevers' makeup compared to Pratt's mask is unknown).
There are also many more explanations of how the Master became decayed on the TARDIS Wiki.

10/10
I love this episode. I'm very partial to Gallifrey episodes and Master episodes, so this one is a win. Tom Baker gives a spectacular performance of course. I also like seeing the corrupt side of timelords as well.

I don’t have a date for this image, but I’m guessing it’s the early 1940s.
Feel free to let me know if you know the date :)

Ghastly Phantasms is a self-published fanzine, created by a small international team who make short zines on classic horror icons. This month they made one about Boris Karloff. I found it a really enjoyable read, so I decided to link the file to read it (it's free!).
Be sure to follow them on their social media so you don't miss their other issues!
I am not part of the Ghastly Phantasms team, nor am I advertising for profit, I am merely linking a good piece of Karloff media!

Shaker-style cabinetry throughout the house was custom-made. The superb storage wall in the master suite dressing room, with its ruddy natural cherrywood surface, stands out against walls and ceiling finished in Pratt & Lambert's 'Seed Pearl' paint. The colors of the nineteenth-century Bessarabian rug blend beautifully with the wood.

Richard Mayhew, b 1924 of African American and Native American ancestry.
Born in 1924 and raised in Amityville, New York, on Long Island’s south shore, Richard Mayhew’s passion for painting was sparked by watching the artists who summered in the environs of Amityville and painted its scenic shoreline. Inspired by these artists, young Mayhew used brushes and paints from his father’s sign painting business to copy what the artists were doing. When Richard Mayhew was 14 years old, one of the artists recognized the young man’s talent and taught him the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Throughout his teenage years, Richard Mayhew made several trips into New York City to study the works of the European and American masters on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. By age 17, he had made up his mind to become an artist.
For Richard Mayhew, the essence of reality is more important than its facts. His landscape paintings aren’t the facts of a landscape but the spirit of a landscape. That spirit shimmers through a haze saturated with color.
His emotional and spiritual connection to the natural world has its roots in his African American and Native American ancestry: his father was African American and Shinnecock; his mother, African American and Cherokee. During his boyhood, his paternal grandmother supported his art endeavors and schooled him in the Native Americans kinship with the earth.
After his service as a Montfort Point Marine, Mayhew moved to New York in 1947, a crucial period in American art history. Abstract Expressionism, the first truly homegrown American art movement, was electrifying the public, igniting passionate discussions among the cognoscenti about what constitutes art in the first place and what is its purpose in the public realm. Richard Mayhew, now a student at the Brooklyn Museum’s school of art, with additional courses at Pratt Institute and Columbia, thrived in this fevered environment. The painterly freedom of the Abstract Expressionists had a profound influence on Richard Mayhew, opening his canvases to the wild essence of being that was in kinship with the spirituality of his heritage.

The Possession
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chris Pratt is awoken at dawn in the darkly lit midst of a nightmare covering in a cloud of space as the moonlight blew up his room as he mindlessly sat upward on to a pillow and he plops up on it. He took a deep breath in a sweat of watery mass all over he gets up walking out of his room in to his private bathroom hoping to not wake up his wife but soon his worries are vanishing. The windows pills downward as the cool air swoops in cooling him down instantly as he stares in the mirror his hair a mess he puts a hand in his hair and twist the knob to turn on the shower. He enters feeling the intensity of the heat, the sweeping cool of the air washing overhis body as he soaps up completely on hisbody as the suds flowing in to the air as helet’s it wash off unknowingly the type of soap is deadly. The fumes from the soaps rise in to the air diving in to his nostrils sending a tinglingly sensation shoots down his nerves tingling his sensation as he goes crazy and he is shaking it and his eyes glaze over leaving him empty. He collapses in heat falling backwards in to the bath tub beginning to fade in time he vanishes outof sight traveling through space and time he finds himself laying fully dressed in a wheel chair. He stirs up managing to rise to his feet full to height he looks amazing even through he is a asshole for the most part I enter the room offering my hand for him to shakeand he does so very reluctantly shaking it with precision. I instruct him to start to undress for he is extremely late for his appointment with me I know he feels extraordinarily sick lately to his stomach holing it tightly as his body is shining inthe light and he ripples before me at my orders. I laugh a bit as he attends to me following me in to laboratory until I point for him to finally lay in the bed to which he does so obediently without question I smirk patting his head and kiss him on the lips before the experiment shall began.
