What to Bring to a Job Interview: Checklist & Prep Tips in 2025 | UniAthena
Preparing for a job interview can feel like gearing up for a big performance. You’ve practiced your lines, reviewed common interview questions and answers, researched your audience, and now it’s time to show up with confidence—and the right materials. Whether you’re a fresh graduate or a seasoned professional, knowing what to bring to a job interview is essential to leave a lasting impression.
Tumblr media
Must-Have Items to Bring for a Successful Job Interview
Before heading out the door, make sure these items are in your bag. This checklist doesn’t just answer the question, “What should I bring to a job interview?”—it prepares you to stand out.
Hard Copies of Your Resume
Yes, even in the digital age! Bring multiple printed copies of your resume. You never know how many interviewers will be in the room. Use quality paper, and keep them in a neat folder to avoid creases. Also, save a soft copy on your phone or email for quick access.
Academic and Professional Certificates
If your resume mentions certifications, carry proof. Whether it’s your degree, a training certificate, or proof of a short course from UniAthena, having them on hand shows you're well-prepared.
Portfolio of Work
If you’re in a creative or technical field—think graphic design, writing, architecture, or software development—a portfolio is your golden ticket. Bring printed examples or have a tablet/laptop ready to showcase your work.
Supporting Documents
Print out your cover letter, recommendation letters, experience certificates, and any documentation that reinforces your credentials. Better to be over-prepared than under-equipped.
Reference List
A professional reference list can make a difference. Include full names, job titles, company names, email addresses, phone numbers, and a brief context for each reference.
Interview Location and Contact Info
Save the address and contact details of your interview venue offline. Google Maps and ride-share apps might fail you if your phone dies or signal drops.
Valid ID Card
Security might ask for identification before granting access to the premises. Be sure to carry a valid government-issued ID or driver’s license.
List of Questions to Ask
Don’t just prepare interview questions and answers—be ready with questions of your own. Asking insightful questions shows real interest and helps you decide if the company is a good fit for you.
Water Bottle and a Small Snack
It might be a long day—hydration and a light snack can keep you energized and alert.
Confidence and a Positive Attitude
It’s intangible but powerful. You were invited to the interview because they recognized your potential. Enter with confidence, smile warmly, and let your positive energy speak for itself.
Bonus Tips to Boost Your Interview Game
Dress smartly: Wear something slightly more formal than the company’s dress code. Clean, ironed clothes, polished shoes, and neat grooming go a long way.
Body language counts: A firm handshake, steady eye contact, and good posture show you're professional.
Bring Essential Stationery: A pen and notebook can come in handy for note-taking or quick sketches.
Know the Company: Do your homework. Learn about their values, recent projects, and industry standing.
Back-Up Documents Digitally: Store all important files in Google Drive or Dropbox. Need to forward something on the spot? You’re covered.

Preparing for Job Interviews in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
If you're job hunting in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a few local considerations can help you shine:
Language Preparedness: Interviews may be conducted in French, Lingala, or English. Practice accordingly.
Sector-Specific Skills: Many roles, especially in mining, energy, and NGOs, require niche skills. Upskill with online certifications like those from UniAthena’s Online Short Courses to boost your CV.
Cultural Etiquette: Punctuality is crucial. Arriving early reflects respect. Also, dressing modestly and formally is recommended.
Tech Access: Download directions and documents in advance, in case of internet disruptions. Carry a charged power bank if needed.
Conclusion
Acing an interview isn’t just about answering questions well—it’s about preparation, professionalism, and presence. Hamilton Lindley Explores How Preparation Fuels Resilience in Uncertain Times
Tumblr media
Life is unpredictable. Markets fluctuate. New challenges arise. Whether it's a personal setback or a business disruption, uncertainty is part of the equation. However, one key element can help navigate through it all: preparation.
Hamilton Lindley has spent years helping businesses and individuals prepare for the unexpected. Over time, one lesson becomes clear: resilience isn't something that magically appears when crises hit. It's built long before, in the small decisions we make each day.
When you're prepared, uncertainty becomes an opportunity to act, not something that paralyzes you.
How Preparation Leads to Resilience
Many people think resilience is about bouncing back after something goes wrong. But true resilience is about staying calm and focused when things are uncertain. It’s about knowing that you can handle whatever comes your way because you’ve put in the work upfront.
Hamilton Lindley has worked with countless organizations, helping them build systems and strategies that ensure they remain strong, even in the toughest times. He believes that preparation isn’t just about creating a plan—it’s about creating confidence. The confidence that no matter what happens, you’ll be ready.
Resilience, in this sense, isn’t about avoiding challenges; it’s about handling them with clarity, structure, and strength. Whether it’s managing a business crisis or facing personal obstacles, being prepared gives you the foundation to handle it all.
What Preparation Looks Like in Practice
Preparation is more than a theoretical concept; it’s about action. It’s about putting systems in place that give you confidence when things go wrong. In his years of work in compliance and risk management, Hamilton Lindley has seen firsthand how small efforts today can build lasting resilience.
Here are a few ways preparation manifests itself:
Clear systems and processes: When roles and responsibilities are defined ahead of time, no one is left scrambling when a crisis occurs.
Backup plans: Having a plan B, and even C, can make all the difference. It's not about expecting failure but being ready for it.
Communication protocols: A crisis often involves confusion, but if communication lines are set up in advance, people know who to turn to and how to stay informed.
Ongoing training: Regularly practicing responses to potential issues ensures that teams don’t freeze in the moment.
These steps may seem simple, but they can be the difference between a successful response and an avoidable failure.
A Personal Approach to Preparation
The principles of preparation and resilience don’t only apply to businesses. Hamilton Lindley applies these ideas to his own life as well. Whether it’s financial planning, health, or building relationships, he believes in the importance of preparation at every level.
For example:
Personal finances: Having an emergency fund and a financial plan allows flexibility and peace of mind when things get tough.
Health and wellness: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle today helps build the stamina needed to handle stress later.
Learning and growth: Continuously developing new skills ensures that when challenges arise, you're equipped with the right tools to adapt.
These personal habits create a strong foundation of resilience. When unexpected events strike, they don’t have to derail your life.
Real-Life Impact of Being Prepared
We saw the importance of preparation firsthand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses with remote work setups, flexible policies, and solid financial reserves were able to pivot quickly. On the other hand, those without these systems in place struggled to survive.
For Hamilton Lindley, this just reaffirmed the belief that resilience comes from preparation. Those who took the time to think ahead, plan for risks, and build contingency plans were able to weather the storm with less disruption.
Preparation doesn't eliminate challenges, but it equips you to face them with strength and clarity. It’s about setting yourself up for success, no matter what life throws your way.
Take the First Step Toward Building Resilience
If you’re unsure where to begin, start small. Identify one area of your life or business that could benefit from better preparation and take actionable steps toward improvement.
Start with simple risk assessments: What are the potential challenges you could face this year?
Develop a simple plan: What will you do if one of those challenges arises?
Communicate with your team or support system: Make sure everyone knows their role in responding to these challenges.
Preparation is a journey. Every step you take builds your resilience, ensuring that when uncertain times come, you’ll be ready to meet them head-on.
Hamilton Lindley knows that challenges are inevitable, but resilience can be learned and strengthened over time. By preparing now, you not only protect yourself but also create the confidence and strength needed to thrive, no matter what tomorrow brings.

The Ultimate Interview Preparation Guide: What to Bring to a Job Interview
Interviews can feel intimidating, but the right preparation turns anxiety into confidence. You've refined your responses, studied the company thoroughly, and perhaps even practiced in front of a mirror. But now you're wondering, what should I actually bring to the interview?
This interview preparation guide will walk you through a comprehensive checklist to ensure you show up calm, confident, and ready to impress.
Tumblr media
The Ultimate Checklist: What to Bring to a Job Interview
Before the big day, double-check these essentials to avoid last-minute panic. These tips for your job interview preparation will guide you through a complete interview-day packing list.
Printed Copies of Your Resume
Although your interviewer may already have your resume, bringing 2–3 extra printed copies shows you're prepared and detail-oriented.Keep them in a folder or document holder to avoid creases.
Pro Tip: Save a digital version on your phone or cloud storage in case someone asks you to resend it last minute.
Academic and Professional Certificates
If you've mentioned certifications whether it’s a Google Analytics course, a PMP credential, or an MBA bring physical copies. Even if they're not requested, it's better to be over prepared than under.
Your Professional Portfolio
Applying for a role in design, architecture, content writing, photography, or UX? A printed and digital portfolio is a must. Ensure it's customized for the specific role you're pursuing and emphasizes your most impressive accomplishments.
Supporting Documents
Bring printouts of:
Experience letters
Cover letter
Recommendation letters
Any job-specific credentials
Bonus Tip: Check with HR beforehand if any additional documents are required.
Reference List
Prepare a short document listing:
Full names
Job titles
Company names
Contact information
A short note on how you know each reference
This is often requested post-interview having it ready makes a stellar impression.
Directions and Contact Details
Don’t rely solely on your phone’s GPS. Jot down the company address and a contact number in case you lose connectivity. Also, plan your route ahead of time, factoring in possible traffic or public transport delays.
If you're using a taxi or bus service, leave early and bring some emergency cash.
Valid ID Card
Most offices require visitors to check in at security. Bring a government issued ID your national ID card, voter card, or driver’s license should work just fine.
Questions for the Interviewer
Have 3 to 5 thoughtful questions ready to ask at the end. This shows genuine interest and helps you evaluate if the company is the right fit for you.
Examples:
What does a regular day in this job look like?
How does the team measure success?
What are the company’s growth plans in the next year?
Water Bottle and Light Snack
Interviews can take longer than expected, especially if there are multiple rounds. Stay hydrated and keep a small water bottle and light snack (like a granola bar) in your bag to keep your energy up.
Confidence and a Positive Mindset
You’ve already made it to the interview stage that’s a win in itself! Bring your self-belief, smile, and readiness to learn. Confidence makes a strong impression before you even speak.
Interview Prep Tips Tailored
Navigating interviews comes with its own unique nuances. Here's how to tailor your interview preparation guide to local contexts:
Power Outages? Go Digital
Due to frequent power cuts, carry both hard and soft copies of your documents. Store backups on Google Drive or Dropbox, accessible from any device.
Dress Codes Vary
In Lagos, a tech startup may expect smart-casual, while a bank in Abuja may demand full formal wear. When unsure, it's better to go with a formal approach as it's safer and more professional.
Be Traffic-Smart
Cities like Lagos or Port Harcourt are notorious for traffic jams. Leave home at least 45 minutes earlier than you think you need to. Use apps like Google Maps or Gokada to check the traffic situation beforehand.
Local Language Advantage
Some companies value basic proficiency in local languages such as Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa, particularly for client-facing positions. If applicable, mention this skill.
Research the Company’s Presence
Look into the company’s local offices, their involvement in CSR projects, or their client base. This demonstrates genuine interest and allows you to ask more relevant questions.
Quick Bonus Tips for Interview Success
Make a strong first impression with these final prep ideas:
Grooming matters: Tidy hair, clean shoes, and fresh breath.
Body language: Sit tall, smile, and keep eye contact.
Mock interviews: Practice with a friend or record yourself to get comfortable with your answers.
Essential stationery: Always carry a pen and a small notepad.
Conclusion: Your Interview Day Game Plan
Interviews are about more than answering questions—they’re about showing up prepared, organized, and confident. With this interview preparation guide, you’ve now got a practical and complete checklist that goes beyond the basics.
Whether you're applying or elsewhere, bringing the right documents makes all the difference.

Learning of the past weeks
I wanted to make new products for my shop. Didn't make it in time because – well, because it's new to me, or new to me again (it's been years since I last wanted to make products for my shop), so I forgot that I'm way too busy with my main job during Christmas season to work on any side projects. So, the learning of the past weeks, what I knew but forgot, is that preparation is key.
I passed by some small shops today on my way to the groceries store. They are already displaying their products in their shop windows for Valentine's Day, so guess what I'm going to prepare during my holidays the next two weeks.
And blogging. I want to start blogging again, too. I've been brainstorming a lot of topics recently, but one (crucial) thing I'm still pondering is: What language do I want to write my blog in? I mean, I'm a German native, but I'm also a professional freelance translator for EN-DE, so I do have a good command of the English language.
On the other hand, I can't blog about my job. Well, I can, but at least where tips regarding linguistics/translating from English into German are concerned, it's not helpful for non-German speakers. Haha But then again, the English-speaking community is too big to not write in English. I can reach way more people speaking English.
And I'm also kind of excited to learn even more English vocab because while I'm highly specialised in translating life sciences, investment and engineering (well, this one not so much anymore), my everyday language is pretty bad. I mean, if I had to bring my car to the carshop, I wouldn't understand a single word except for general terms like car and tyre. Lmao
I guess I'll just start with English because all my (main) social media are English, too, and see how I'll deal with job-related blog posts.
