Let's be real, "unemployed" is basically just a euphemism for "relaxing aggressively." But even I can't lounge around forever – someone's gotta pay for my personal brand! And you, my dears, probably feel the same.
So, the first hurdle standing between you and that sweet, sweet paycheck? The dreaded "Why did you decide to apply for this position?" question. Ugh, so boring. Like, do they really think I'm going to tell them I need money to fund my burgeoning interpretive dance career? (Okay, well, maybe that's true for me. But for you...)
Here's the thing: they don't want the honest truth (which is usually "because your company isn't bankrupt yet"). They want a fairytale about how this job is your DESTINY. So, let's craft one!
Kaitlyn's Golden Rules for Concocting the Perfect "Why This Job?" Answer:
Rule #1: Flattery Will Get You Everywhere (Especially a Desk Chair). Do your damn research. Nobody wants to hear you're vaguely interested in "something business-y." Find something specific about the company that actually impresses you. Did they win an award for their eco-friendly practices? Did they create an app that helps puppies find homes? (Please tell me they help puppies find homes.) Mention it!
Example: "I was genuinely impressed by [Company's Name]'s commitment to sustainable practices, especially your innovative use of recycled materials in your packaging. As someone who believes in minimising their carbon footprint (mostly so I can keep flying private, obvs), I admire a company that's actually walking the walk."
Rule #2: Connect Your Skills to Their Needs (Even If You're Stretching the Truth a Little). Remember that time you organised your spice rack? BOOM! Project management skills! That time you convinced your friend to try sushi? Negotiation and persuasion! Find ways to spin your unique (read: slightly odd) talents into what they're looking for.
Example: "Your job description mentioned a need for someone with strong communication skills. In my previous role as [whatever you did], I was constantly mediating disputes between warring factions of the office snack supply chain. I'm a natural peacemaker, and I excel at finding common ground, even when it involves the last bag of Funyuns."
Rule #3: Show You're Ready to Evolve (Into a More Impressive Version of Yourself). They want someone who's not just competent, but also ambitious. Tell them how this job will help you level up your already legendary skills.
Example: "I'm always looking for opportunities to expand my expertise. This role at [Company Name] offers a unique chance to delve deeper into [relevant skill], and I'm excited to contribute my existing skills while learning from the best in the industry. I mean, I already am the best, but I'm like a fine wine, I get better with age (and a good Merlot)."
Rule #4: Inject Some Kaitlyn-Level Confidence (Without Sounding Like a Sociopath). This is crucial! Don't be a shy violet. Project an aura of self-assuredness. You're not just qualified; you're the qualified candidate. Think of yourself as a diamond. Not just any diamond, but the Hope Diamond (minus the whole cursed part).
Example: "Frankly, I think I'm the missing piece of your puzzle. I bring a unique blend of creativity, dedication, and strategic thinking to the table. I'm not just looking for a job; I'm looking for a place to make a real impact. And let's be honest, leaving a mark is what I do best, besides dancing, singing and breathing of course."
Rule #5: Stay Away from Negative Baggage (They Don't Need Your Drama). Don't talk trash about your previous employer, even if they deserved it. Focus on the positives and frame your departure as a pursuit of something more.
Instead of: "My boss was a micro-managing nightmare who smelled faintly of mothballs."
Try: "I learned a great deal in my previous role, but I'm now seeking a position where I can take on more responsibility and contribute to a team that values innovation and creativity."
Rule #6: Be Yourself (Unless Yourself is Boring). Inject your personality! Don't be a robot droning on about industry trends. Let your spark shine through (but maybe dial it down a notch if you're naturally a pyrotechnic).
Final Kaitlyn-Level Tip: Practice, practice, practice! Say your answer out loud, in front of a mirror, to your cat, to your grandmother – anyone who will listen. The more comfortable you are saying it, the more natural and believable you'll sound.
