Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and By Rhine, surrounded by his sisters
Ernest was always given a lot of support by his sisters, probably because of the trauma he underwent when his little brother Frittie died while playing with him and because of the death of his mother, who, as per the sources, caught diphtheria after giving him a kiss to console him for the death of his sister May of the same disease. Later on, he lost his little daughter Elizabeth which must have been devastating for him. But he had the love and support of his sisters, and Nicholas II seems to have also been very fond of him. As we know, there were further losses down the road. His beautiful sisters Grand Duchess Elizabeth (wearing her nun's habit in the photo) and Empress Alexandra, were murdered by the Bolsheviks.
Ernie might have been born into a life of privilege and riches, but the extent of the tragedy he experienced in his life is unimaginable.
In addition to Elizabeth and Alexandra, his sisters Irene (Princess Heinrich) and Victoria appear in the photograph.
And since all Romanov roads lead to Prince Phillip, please note that Victoria Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven, born Victoria of Hesse, and By Rhine (older sister of Empress Alexandra) was Prince Phillip's maternal grandmother. So he had Hessian blood as well.

Royal Wedding on 25 November 1925 in Langenburg.
Prince Karl of Leiningen (27) and Grand Duchess Maria Kirillovna of Russia (18).
Tumblr media
The bridegroom was the third child and second born son of Emich, 5th Prince of Leiningen and his wife Princess Feodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. His eldest brother, Emich Ernst, Hereditary Prince of Leiningen, died at the age of twenty-one in 1918. So, Prince Karl became his father's heir.
Both of his parents were related to Queen Victoria.
The bride was the eldest child of Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich and his wife Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her mother was previously married to Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and had a child by her first marriage, Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine who sadly died of virulent tiphoid fever in 1903.

The Royal Wedding took place at 12:30PM on Thursday, July 6th, 1893 in The Chapel Royal (Left Picture) at St. James Palace (Right Picture) in London, England
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
𝐸𝓃𝑔𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉 𝒮𝓉𝑜𝓇𝓎
♕ Previous Engagement: Her Majesty Queen Mary (Top Picture) was engaged before meeting His Majesty George V. Mary had become engaged to His Royal Highness Prince Albert The Duke of Clarence and Avondale (Bottom Picture), the older brother of George. Sadly the wedding never happened, as The Duke had fell ill with the Flu which then took a bad turn, turning the flu into Pneumonia. The Duke passed away on Friday, January 8th, 1892 at The Sandringham House in Norfolk, England.
Tumblr media
♕ Staying In The Family - Part 1: Her Majesty Queen Victoria (George’s Grandmother: Left Picture) wanted the then His Royal Highness Prince George of Wales, to marry either Her Majesty Queen Marie of Romania (His Cousin: Middle Picture) or Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna (His Cousin: Right Picture). George sadly was not fond of either of the two women & Her Majesty Queen Marie of Romania (Middle Picture) did react to George’s proposal to her by rejecting him.
Tumblr media
♕ “I’m Too Young”: Even after his grandmother tried to wed George & his two cousins, the young prince refused to be married. “I still think marrying too young is a bad thing. The one thing I never could do is to marry a person that didn’t care for me. I should be miserable for the rest of my life.” George wrote this to his grandmother stating that he was too young to be married & even if he did marry young, he would marry someone he loved.
♕ Staying In The Family - Part 2: George’s grandmother & Mary had met during her engagement to the now parted Duke, & Queen Victoria was fond of Mary. She had spoken to Mary to see what she would think about marrying her fiancé’s brother. This was very embarrassing for both George & Mary, as Mary’s fiancé's & George’s brother, had only been dead for 1 year & the two were still in mourning. The couple began to feel the pressures of the royal life. Mary began to feel pressure from not only her family but George’s family to be a married woman. George felt the pressure of his new position as second-in-line to the throne, he was still recovering from the proposal rejection of his cousin Her Majesty Queen Marie of Romania, & he also had no idea if Mary even had romantic feelings towards him.
♕ The Proposal: After a long conversation with George’s favorite aunt Olga Constantinovna of Russia (Also known as Queen Olga of Greece: Left Picture), the young duke was urged to propose to his brother’s fiancé Mary. George had help with his proposal from his sister Her Royal Highness Louise The Princess Royal (Middle Picture) & his brother-in-law Alexander Duff 1st Duke of Fife (Louise’s husband: Right Picture). On Wednesday, May 3rd, 1893, Louise had “arranged” to have tea with Mary. When Mary arrived to have tea with Louise, she had found George & Louise waiting for her instead of just Louise. The Princess Royal had suggested that the couple go to the garden to go watch the frogs that lived in the garden pond. The duke then proposed to Mary by the pond & she happily accepted George’s proposal. The couple came to learn how to love & care for each other deeply, despite the stress & heartbreak of the last year.
♕ Morning: That Thursday morning, when George was walking the corridors of Buckingham Palace, he accidentally spotted his bride. As tradition, Bride & Groom are never supposed to see each other (unless a private moment is planned by the couple to meet with each other before the wedding) because it is bad luck. As George spotted Mary, he proceeded to make a low & courtly bow towards the princess, a sweet moment many say that Mary never forgot.
♕ Wedding Party: The Royal Wedding was attended by 5 Bridesmaids, 5 Junior Bridesmaids, & 2 Supporters of The Groom.
♕ Wedding Officiant: The Archbishop of Canterbury Edward White Benson (Left Picture) performed the ceremony. He was assisted by The Bishop of London Frederick Temple (Middle Picture), The Bishop of Rochester Randall Thomas Davidson 1st Baron Davidson of Lambeth (Right Picture), & 5 other priests.
Tumblr media
♕ Register Signing Tradition: As Tradition during all Royal Weddings, the Register must be signed. The Register of the Wedding of His Majesty George V The King & Her Majesty Queen Mary was signed by Her Majesty Queen Victoria, The Prime Minster William Ewart Gladstone (Pictured Below), & all other royal personages that were present at the wedding.
Tumblr media
♕ Balcony Tradition: As Tradition of all Royal Weddings, the Bride & Groom along with family, made an appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony. Even Queen Victoria made a rare public appearance when she joined the couple on the Balcony.
♕ Official Portraits (Photo is in Order): The Official Painters of the Royal Wedding were Heinrich Anton von Angeli, Laurits Tuxen, & Sir Samuel Luke Fildes
Tumblr media
♕ Title Change: As Royal Tradition, the Groom (Sometimes) & Bride’s (Always) Title will change. Mary’s Title changed from Her Serene Highness Princess Victoria Mary of Teck to Her Royal Highness The Duchess of York. George’s Title changed from His Royal Highness Prince George of Wales to His Royal Highness The Duke of York.
♕ Spectators: Since The Wedding of His Majesty George V The King & Her Majesty Queen Mary, was the first public royal wedding in 32 years, the large crowd of spectators spread down the route of travel from Buckingham Palace to St. James Palace. As she arrived at the chapel, Mary gave the crowd a side-ways smile & a wave that made her seem a little nervous about her upcoming vows that were about to take place.
𝒲𝑒𝒹𝒹𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝒪𝓊𝓉𝒻𝒾𝓉𝓈
♕ The Designer: In 1891, Mary’s mother Mary The Duchess of Teck announced that not only Mary’s dress but also the bridesmaids dresses would be made in Britain. Arthur Silver of Silver Studios was chosen to design the then Princess’s future wedding gown for when Mary was supposed to marry Prince Albert (But sadly the wedding never happened). Before the dress began, Mary & her mother visited the Warner & Sons’ factory which is located at the Hollybush Gardens in Spitalfields, London. The mother daughter duo asked the factory to make fine white silks with silver thread by Albert Parchment for the dress. Mary’s Second Wedding Dress was crafted by Linton & Curtis of Albemarle Street (A street in Mayfair Central London off Piccadilly).
♕ The First Dress: After Mary’s fiancé had passed away, her “Lily of the Valley” (A highly poisonous woodland flowering plant with sweetly scented, pendent, bell-shaped white flowers borne in sprays in spring) wedding was made public but was abandoned by the family & the designer.
Tumblr media
♕ The Second Dress: For Mary’s wedding to George, the design that she chose for her dress was “The May Silks” & would be influenced by Japanese Art. The design of the embroidery of the dress would include emblems of Roses, Shamrocks, Thistle, Orange Blossom, & True Lovers Knots. The front of Mary’s Wedding Gown was made of white satin which had 3 small flounces of old Honiton Lace (A Type of Lace Textile made by braiding & twisting lengths of thread, which are wound on wood or bone bobbins & is made in Honiton, Devon) from the wedding dress of her mother which were located on the top & upper parts of the sleeves. The bodice long, pointed, cut at the throat, made of Arthur Silver’s white & silver brocade, & satin fell from the Princess’s shoulders. The train of the gown was long but plain & Mary wore her mother’s veil, which was also made of Honiton lace & fastened using her wedding gift from Her Majesty Queen Mary, diamond pins. The veil was never used again in another royal wedding. Following the flower theme of the dress, small wreaths were placed around the bust & in Mary’s hair. (A Dark Photo than the one above so you can see the design better)
Tumblr media
♕ Royal Jewelry: For her wedding, Mary wore a diamond tiara as a loan from Queen Victoria. Along with the Tiara, the bride wore a Diamond Rivière Necklace from the Prince & Princess of Wales, Diamond Earrings from Prince George, & a Anchor Brooch from Prince George.
𝐹𝓊𝓃 𝐹𝒶𝒸𝓉𝓈:
♕ The Wedding of His Majesty George V The King & Her Majesty Queen Mary, was the first Royal Wedding to take place in St. James Chapel since the death of Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Albert was Her Majesty Queen Victoria’s husband but many of the couple’s children married in the St. James Chapel. The cause of death was Typhoid Fever.
♕ The Couple spent their honeymoon at Sandringham, which is George’s estate in Sandringham, Norfolk, England (Top Picture). They stayed at Sandringham until they left for the Osborne House in East Cowes, Isle of Wright, United Kingdom (Bottom Picture).
The disease of hemophilia has often been referred to as “The Royal Disease”.
The disease was prominently connected to the line of Queen Victoria.
Hemophilia is often carried by females, but inherited by males. Most known example was Tsarina Alexandra. She carried the disease in her blood, and Alexei (only son) inherited it.
There were others in the family that suffered this disease, and eight family members died from it.
Those being:
Prince Friedrich of Hesse and by Rhine (October 7, 1870 – May 29, 1873)
Died when he fell from an open window in his mother’s bedroom. He survived the fall but died hours later due to his hemophilia causing a brain hemorrhage.
He was two years old.
The Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (April 7, 1853 –  March 28, 1884)
Died by hitting his head while falling which also injured his knee. The next morning he died from a cerebral hemorrhage.
He was thirty years old.
Prince Heinrich Friedrich of Prussia (January 9, 1900 – February 26, 1904)
Died after climbing on a table, and falling off head first. Had he not had hemophilia doctors said he would have lived. However, due to the disease he died a few hours later from a brain hemorrhage.
He was four years old.
Lord Leopold Mountbatten (May 21, 1889 – April 23, 1922)
Died during a hip operation from blood lose.
He was thirty-two years old.
Prince Rupert of Teck (August 24, 1907 – April 15, 1928)
Died from a car crash which caused an intracerebral hemorrhage.
He was twenty years old.
Infante Gonzalo of Spain (October 24, 1914 – August 13, 1934)
Died two days after a car crash, though he was not badly injured his hemophilia caused severe abdominal bleeding. He was unable to have an operation due to hemophilia and a weak heart.
He was nine-teen years old.
Alfonso, Prince of Asturias (May 10, 1907 –September 6, 1938)
Died after crashing into a telephone booth in his car, which his injuries were minor. His hemophilia caused severe internal bleeding.
He was thirty-one years old.
Prince Waldemar of Prussia (March 20, 1889 – May 2, 1945)
Died due to lack of blood transfusion since all medical resources were diverted by the The American Army to treat concentration camp victims.
He was fifty-six years old.
Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse (1868 - 1937) and his children
Ernst Ludwig was the son of Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and By Rhine, and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. His four sisters were Victoria (mother to Alice Mountbatten and, therefore, grandmother of Prince Phillip,) Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, a martyr of the Russian Revolution and a saint, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, and Princess Irene (she was known as Princess Heinrich because she married Prince Heinrich, the brother of the Keiser.)
He suffered many painful losses throughout his life, including that of his beloved firstborn, daughter Elizabeth, whom he fathered with Victoria Melita, Princess of Edinburgh. The beautiful girl died two years after the couple divorced. Subsequently, he entered a second marriage with Princess Eleonore of Solms-Hohensolms-Lich (the family called her Onor.) He had two sons with Onor, George Donatus (George Donatus married a sister of Prince Phillip) and Louis.
Ernst Ludwig adored children all his life and was always ready to romp with his own, his sisters' children (OTMAA), and later with his grandchildren. He never got over the death of his beautiful little daughter.
Here are several pictures of him with his boys and an unidentified little girl and a picture of the Duke with his beloved daughter.
The Husbands of the Four Graces
Some time ago, I read a very interesting book about Queen Victoria's Hessian Granddaughters (Victoria, Elizabeth, Irene, and Alix.) The title was "The Four Graces," and ever since I read it, that is the way I think about the daughters of Grand Duke of Louis IV of Hesse and by Rhine and the beautiful princess Alice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, second daughter of Queen Victoria.
These young women were among the most marriageable princesses of their generation. They were beautiful, accomplished and Queen Victoria's granddaughters. There was no need to look for husbands for them. Among their suitors could be found future Kaisers, Tsars and Kings of England even though it was well known that any or all of the princesses could be carriers of hemophilia (inherited from their august grandmother Victoria.) Their sons might be bleeders. One of their brother's had been, therefore Princess Alice, their mother, had been a carrier.
The four men they married appear in the first photograph above; one marquess, one prince, one grand duke, and one Emperor (all of them very handsome):
👑Louis Mountbatten, first Marques of Milford Heaven (the man all the way to the left on the picture) married Princess Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie of Hesse and By Rhine. Victoria and Louis had two sons and neither one of them had hemophillia.
👑The Hohenzollern Prince and brother of the German Keiser, Prince Heinrich of Prussia (the man to the right of Mountbatten in the photograph) married Princess Irene Luise Marie Anne of Hesse and By Rhine. They were first cousins since Heinrich was the son of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, the Princess Royal, who was the older sister of Princess Alice. They had three sons. Two out of the three had hemophilia. One died in childhood of causes related to that disease.
👑 Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia (the man to the right of Prince Heinrich) married Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Louise Alice of Hesse and by Rhine. Sergei and Elizabeth had no children.
👑The soon-to-be Tsar Nicholas II of Russia married Alix Viktoria Helene Luise Beatrix. Alix had one son, and he had hemophilia. (gcl)
The European Royal Family that Queen Victoria created
This is a very interesting group of Royal guests assembled for the wedding of the parents of the future Phillip, Duke of Edinburg: Princess Alice of Battenberg (1885 - 1969) to Prince Andrew of Greece (1882 - 1944.) The wedding was celebrated at Darmstadt in 1903. I doubt I will be able to identify all these illustrious guests, but I will list the ones I recognize. There are representatives here from the Greek, Danish, German/Hessian/Prussian, and Russian Royal Houses. I count thirty-three adults and children in this picture.
King Hakoon VII
There are roughly thirteen royalties I do not recognize, so if you identify anybody I haven't, please let me know. It is also possible I have made some incorrect identifications, especially among the Greek contingent.
This type of gathering stopped happening gradually, so these photos are treasures!
Princess Heinrich (nee Irene of Hesse and By Rhine) 1866 - 1956 and her husband Prince Heinrich of Prussia (1862 - 1929)
Irene was an older sister of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. Like her sister, she was a hemophilia carrier and had two children with hemophilia; one died in childhood. Her husband Heinrich was Keiser Wilhelm II's brother and Irene's first cousin (Heinrich's mother was Vicky, Queen Victoria's first daughter; Irene's mother was Alice, her second daughter). Although Queen Victoria was angry when the couple married because she had not been informed until shortly before the wedding, they had a very successful marriage. Irene supported her sister Alix when Alexei nearly died of complications of hemophilia at the Imperial Family's hunting lodge in Poland.
Nicholas II, Tzar of all the Russias
Tumblr media
Grand Duke Serge Alexandrovich, the Tzar's cousin and brother-in-law through marriage to Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, nee Princess Elizabeth of Hesse and By Rhine, sister of Empress Alexandra
Tumblr media
Prince Heinrich of Prussia, brother of the Keiser, grandson of Queen Victoria, and brother-in-law of the Tzar and Grand Duke Serge, through marriage to Princess Irene of Hesse and By Rhine, sister of Empress Alexandra and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna
The three gentlemen were also third cousins as they were great-grandsons of Paul I of Russia.
A Tzar, a Prince, and a Grand Duke (or three cousins)
I wish I knew where these pictures were taken. Nicholas, Prince Heinrich, and Grand Duke Serge are not in uniform, so it is not Russia. It could be Britain, but that I know of, the Tzar only visited the country twice, for his engagement to Alix, and many years later, when the family did not leave the royal yachts because of security reasons.
So is it Friedesborg? If anybody knows, please enlighten me. The three gentlemen look simply charming in their formal dinner attire.
